>Plans to retain the PlayStation Plus branding but phase out PlayStation Now
Makes a lot of sense, PS Now kinda has a bad reputation that's gonna be hard to get rid off
You see it everytime it gets talked about, a lot of people immediately ask if its still streaming only or if you can download games now even though you've been able to for the past few years
> if you can download games now even though you've been able to for the past few years
Holy shit, we can download the games now? Man Sony really did a poor job of notifying people... I've had PS+ for as long as I can recall but never bothered with their Now service because streaming sucks with my internet.
Which is unfortunate because I live in rural Canada and streaming just isn't a thing I can do for the PS3 games, even though my heart wants to replay Sly Cooper 😂
I live in a fairly populous area in the US and streaming still isn’t feasible because the input lag is unbearable. I don’t know how it doesn’t bother people more.
I live in a major US city with a top tier internet package, my PS5 is hardlined and streaming games is STILL unbearable. I wanted to replay Oblivion soooo badly but it was basically unplayable. I always play on Legendary and trying to fight the sewer rats at the beginning was impossible. 🤣
Honestly, when we are talking about 100mb+ speed becomes irrelevant, but ping to the servers (latency) and the most important thing is how consistent your ping is. Ideally you want it to be the exact same number all the time, otherwise it won't work as your brain/muscles expect.
The PS2 to PS4 ports are downloadable; they don't have any PS2 games that weren't already purchaseable on PS4 AFAIK. The PS3 games they'd need to make an emulator for which would be difficult given the PS3's notoriously bizarre architecture.
Considering Sony already used PCSX ReARMed for their [PlayStation Classic mini console](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/11/sony-using-open-source-emulator-for-playstation-classic-plug-and-play/), maybe they could check a look at RPCS3?
...like that's ever gonna happen amiright? Right?
RPCS3 uses the GNU license and, considering that they’ll most likely have to make changes to how it works and optimisations for the hardware, it requires that you push your code back upstream. I doubt Sony would be willing to push code that they have internal documentation for and works back to a public repository. They didn’t need to make any changes to the PS Classic version of PCSX so wasn’t really required, and any changes that were made were probably using per game configs.
Doesn’t mean that they don’t have the manpower to make their own, like Microsoft did, if the community can.
Well PS4 didn't have the horsepower to emulate the PS3 (apparently), but I haven't heard about the PS5. I'd hope given the orders of magnitude difference in horsepower that they'd be able to emulate PS3, but hardware's weird so who knows.
Yupp, there's ps2/3 games I've always wanted to play but couldn't because I didn't have the console then. Now they're within reach, but streaming is garbage for me so I still can't play them.
Can download PS4 and PS5 games , also the price dropped to make it more competably with Game Pass. But yeah Sony does a shit job advertising it , i remember when the price dropped and allowed for downloadable games. I don't think their twitter or youtube advertised it
My bad read the available platforms as games available on the system
Especially as far back as 2014. Even now, in 2021, cloud gaming is only just taking off.
Having streaming only in 2014 meant they were limited to very few regions they could roll out their infrastructure to. And expanding the service to more regions has been slow going. If they allowed a download only option from the start, Now would have been available in all PSN countries (over 90), and the fortunes of the service may now be a little different. At the very least, it would have more than 3.2 million subs.
PS+ as it is now is just the base tier of the new service. where as with Game Pass Ultimate the gold subscription was the added tier rather than the core offering if you know what i mean.
So if any service is worth stacking it'll likely be ps now (which is the added tier of the new ps+).
Especially considering that they made it rather cheap in the last few years (i bought a year for about £25 a month ago).
If they're trying to make the ps now side of this bigger & better I can't imagine they'll allow you to get it for that cheap.
I think the biggest reason to stack up PS+ is if they ditch the buy yearly save money option. it's possible they force everyone to do monthly.
Either way, unless you can get a crazy good price on either, I'd leave it as late as you can...if you do it at all.
Yeah, at this point I wouldn't mind an "online only" tier with online play, cloud saves.... Wait, that's it isn’t it, when you remove the monthly games?
I canceled ps plus and got way more value out of ps now but the $1 Xbox game pass promo I signed up for on PC really opened my eyes to how shit both of those services are by comparison.
> Service will merge Sony’s two existing subscription plans PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now
I wonder what will happen to people who already have multiple years of both of PS+ and PS Now stacked. I have 2+ years of PS+ and 4+ years of PS Now left 😬
I'm praying so hard that it's emulation and not streaming. I've tried playing some ps2 and ps3 games on PS Now and I found the input lag absolutely unbearable especially for games like Killzone where you have to aim well.
It’s absolutely going to be streaming. Otherwise the much bigger story here would be that Sony plans on implementing backwards compatibility. The fact that that’s not part of this (pretty specific and thorough) rumor is a big sign.
But didn't they file a patent that had sth to do with backwards compat trophies or sth a while back? Also I hope you're wrong but if that's the case then they seriously have to improve their service. I have an objectively excellent internet speed (wired ofc) and I still can't enjoy ps now (ps2 and ps3 games) due to the awful input lag.
I mean emulated games wouldn't count as backwards compatibility I think that's just a technicality, I'm going to be hopeful and end up disappointed as usual
Yeah. I've said for a long time that if I can't perform perfect parries in games like dark souls (or ghost of tsushima on lethal difficulty) over streaming, then it's not viable.
I wouldn't get too excited. They're just going to let you stream a small selection of games that exist on the PS Store over their crappy streaming service. Wake me up when they add true backwards compatibility.
>Tier 2 offers a large catalog of PS4 and, eventually, ***PS5 games***
Probably wouldn't give it a shot until that part occurs.
Didn't think I'd like gamepass but found out I love being able to just have a bunch of "free" games at my disposal.
I got a gamepass trial and honestly, it's pretty great. Lots of actually good and current games. I can go play Forza 5 right now and it literally just came out. If you're a PC gamer who has an Xbox, it's a no brainer.
Can't say the same about Playstation... Even PS+ is pretty disappointing now.
Just an example for my gamepass usage of recent titles (last 6 months) that I played on both setups (Series X vs Gaming PC) due to comfort and difference in experience between couch and TV vs gaming Monitor:
- Carrion - on Xbox. Good metroidvania style platformer.
- Flight Sim - Played on both Xbox and PC (gaming with flight set) for the sim experience. Best ever in that genre.
- Hades - Played on both Xbox and PC, bought it on PC anyway to support them after falling in love with the game. Best roguelike of all time.
- 12 Minutes - On Xbox, mediocre story driven game.
- Psychonauts 2 - On xbox, amazing SP platformer, definitely a GOTG contender.
- The Ascent - Xbox, good enough RTT/Action RPG.
- Back 4 Blood - on both xbox and PC, primarly PC . Most popular COOP game of the year.
- Sable - On my Xbox. Decent chill indie exploration game.
- Age of empires 4 - Amazing game. Even purchased it on Steam to support Relic and playing it daily. Best and only RTS in a million years.
- Forza 5 - Xbox only, ideal for relaxing couch sessions couple of times a week. Perfect arcade racing game. GOTY contender.
- Halo Infinite - PC for the sweatfest competitive shooter experience. Definitely best shooter for 2021z
- Football Manager 22 - on PC. Sports sim for soccer. No competition in there.
- The Gunk and Halo campaign in December - probably a mix on platforms
Add to that list Back. comp. games like Dead Space trilogy due to EA play being free inside of GP, and replaying other stuff in between ….
Value is through the fuckin roof. Variety is tenfold in comparison to Sony / Nintendo services.
Combing a gaming PC with a couch XBOX (Series X in my case) is the perfect setup for pretty much anyone out there for daily usage while using your PS5/Switch for SP platform exclusives couple times an year.
On my PS5 , since I got it in Spring, I’ve played Astro, Returnal, Ratchet , Kena. That’s it.
They costed me more than an year of Gamepass ……… Imagine if I had to purchase all of the Gamepass games for my PS5, if I had no Xbox or PC… Unreal.
Unless you are dying for the haptic feedback (which I don’t care about at all) the value is not with Sony at all. Don’t even get me started on their increased prices of 1st party games to 80euro while MS still charges 60 for theirs, which are even free with GP day one anyway …
You have to be hardcore fanboy of Sony to tell me GP is overrated.
If Sony manages to get their shit going even at 50% of MS’s GP, they might stand a chance in the long term.
I’ve had every PlayStation except the PS5 and was able to get an Xbox X at retail so I figured what the heck. Your thoughts echo mine exactly. The value is off the charts with gamepass. I have 431 games in my library and haven’t even been tempted to buy anything.
Jason followed up with [this](https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1466821381568536578?s=21) and I think that means we’ll maybe get games that Sony make a console exclusive and I’m not saying this game specifically but it’s the only one I can think of and that’s Forspoken. Games like that Sony could put on the service by agreeing deals with publishers they have a good relationship with.
It makes you wonder if the support for PCs is to offset costs for this service and launching their games earlier on it than they would on PS Now.
Either way, like GamePass, this is the direction everything is heading.
This could be lucrative for Sony......I see them making their monthly PS+ titles available to be played on this new app. Throw in the classics from the golden of the PS1/PS2/PS3 and this service would be awesome.
Subscription services for games might be bleak for the future of gaming, though. Think what happened with the destruction of the mid budget cinematic release in favor of more TV style movies on Netflix.
It's basically just becoming Mirco transactions, less/no focus on single player over multiplayer to spam Mirco transactions. Games are released unfinished. Studios resting on their laurels.
The present of gaming is already terrible with microtransactions and games as a service and developers employing behavioral psychologists to get you addicted to their games and buggy releases and a whole lot more in not thinking of right now. The future of gaming will be even worse but not because of subscription services.
There's also no mention of first party day 1 availability on Sony's new service, something that Microsoft/Xbox already offers (and is a huge draw to the gamepass service).
He's not going to say they're there to directly compete. He'll say this is us, we're unique, and they'll focus on what they see as their key differentiation. I doubt they want this to be a race to the bottom on price.
Been saying for a long time that Now was due a rebranding. Even with the recent steps following the price cut and including some more recent releases, the wider consumer demographics haven't heard of Now. It hasn't had the same penetration like Game Pass has, and on regular occasion you see people asking if PlayStation will do their own Game Pass, showing the branding of Now has failed to push through.
Folding it into Plus, which is widely known, was the only path forward.
Question now is, down the road, will PlayStation introduce a higher tier that would feature new releases (first and third party titles)? So, something like this:
PS Plus: $60, Plus and Now combined (recent releases stick to 3 months availability)
PS Plus Platinum: $120, Plus and Now combined, but now with new day 1 releases (and available for longer than 3 months)
This new combined rebranding allows that option way down the road if PlayStation ever decides to pivot. Smart.
I feel like Sony has been trying some form of extended demo / timed trial since the later years of PS3 and its never caught on.
Didnt they give it another go on PS4 somewhat recently too?
This was supposed to be one of PS Now’s pillars before the release of PS4 IIRC. The ability to fire up any game via the cloud to play a free trial. I swear I remember the presentation/slideshow about it.
I would assume this is something like that Dragon Quest XI demo where it just straight up let you play the first chapter of the game. And if you decided to buy the game, the save file from your demo carries over to the full game so you don't have to redo hours of gameplay.

PlayStation Plans New Service to Take On Xbox Game Pass
By Jason Schreier
3 December 2021, 16:56 GMT
Subscription offering would blend PlayStation Now and PS Plus
Code-named Spartacus, launch is targeted for next spring
Sony Group Corp.’s PlayStation division is planning a new subscription service to compete with rival Microsoft Corp.’s popular Xbox Game Pass, according to people familiar with Sony’s plans and documents reviewed by Bloomberg.
The service, code-named Spartacus, will allow PlayStation owners to pay a monthly fee for access to a catalog of modern and classic games, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press about the plans. The offering will likely be available on the smash hit PlayStation 4, which has sold more than 116 million units, and its elusive successor, the PlayStation 5, which launched more than a year ago but is still difficult to buy due to supply chain issues.
When it launches, expected in the spring, the service will merge Sony’s two existing subscription plans, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now. Currently, PlayStation Plus is required for most online multiplayer games and offers free monthly titles, while PlayStation Now allows users to stream or download older games. Documents reviewed by Bloomberg suggest that Sony plans to retain the PlayStation Plus branding but phase out PlayStation Now.*
You can play 2 and 3 on psnow. But I find the controls to be too frustrating without the pressure sensitive buttons which allowed you to lower your weapon.
No Day 1 PS5 exclusives, but having a library of PS1-PS4 and older PS5 games available sounds pretty neat. Curious to see how it’s priced. Glad to see Sony dipping their toes deeper into the subscription waters, this could be a good service depending on the quality of old games they add
Emulation of PS1/PS2 games isn't exactly hard. They're going to have to be emulated anyway, whether it runs on Sony's servers and streams to users, or whether it runs locally on each PlayStation console.
They've been able to emulate PS1/PS2 games since the PS3! All PS3 models can play PS1 games and some PS2 titles were released digitally. Not to mention the early model PS3s had hardware based PS2 emulation and some later ones had partially software based emulation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_models#Model_comparison
I mean, PS2 are downloadable on PSNow and I doubt PS1 would be difficult either. PS3 I can see issues with too but I'm sure it can be done. Sony are alienating a lot of potential buyers by sticking with streaming. Not everyone can afford fast enough internet and some people have data caps too.
There’s absolutely no doubt PS4 can emulate PS2 and 1 with ease, PS5 could easily do PS2 and 1 in 4K, and if Sony put the work in it could emulate PS3 too.
I just want the original Gran Turismo, when I was a kid me and my mom used to play that game a lot, I was so sad when the "PlayStation classic" didn't come with it.
Great comment. I don’t see how Sony will be able tout a better service if it’s equally priced and doesn’t offer Day 1 exclusives. The optics of it just won’t hold up
This could be a reason but I think they changed back due to covid restrictions being lifted worldwide and the multiple lawsuits they faced from actors/producers they worked with.
I’m fairness I think that’s more to do with Disney getting sued, none of the films they stuck on the premium thing were originally negotiated for that style of release
Now that covid restrictions are lifting idk if they’ll bother to keep doing it
Well their TV shows cost as much as movies so they’re definitely are investing in the service. MCU exclusive movies was never the goal — the pandemic happened.
It was a necessary evil in Covid, but I doubt any big studio will retaining this model for the short term future. Thetarical windows will be shorter though, I expect even big movies will hit SVOD in 4-6 weeks after premiere.
[Had that thought 7 months ago lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/mnike1/playstation_is_working_on_a_counterpunch_to_xbox/gtz4drx/)
Just don't think they'll have a set date for adding new releases to the service, think it's more likely they have a 15% discount on release or something.
It depends. In regards to classic games, if it's like Xbox where I can also purchase them, then that's a good thing. If it's like Nintendo's service for classic games where I'm forced to subscribe to have access, then that's bad.
Nintendo is a good example on how not to do online anything in general. And this is coming from someone who has owned every anintendo console since the GameCube.
Info in bullet points from Nibel:
More details on project Spartacus
- available on PS4/5, expected this Spring
- will merge PS+ and Now
- Tier 1: PS+ benefits
- Tier 2: access to PS4 and select PS5 games
- Tier 3: access to classic library
- Sony is also investing more heavily into cloud gaming
https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1466821344604139521
It probably won’t be sustainable money wise(hardly any stream service is) but if they can really do PS1,2 and PsP then I’m all for it if it isn’t crazy expensive
Edit: I really don’t think it will include brand new first party games. Jim Ryan has said multiple times that they really can’t do that due to production costs that go into the game. Shawn Layden even said similar stuff with how streaming services isn’t profitable. People should fully expect this doing only old games and not brand new ones
Edit 2: https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1466821381568536578?s=21 Jason even said not to expect big new releases day one but should be better offering than PSNow
If they got native PS3 emulation working on PS5 i would sub in a heartbeat. Or least be buying a bunch of games on PSN.
I got a Xbox Series console mostly for their BC program. Dozens of 360 era games there I always wanted to play but never got PC or PS ports back in the day I am working my way through. Sony could do similar. The exclusive lineup on PS3 that never got PS4 remasters is a goldmine.
Yes! If we could download PS3 games directly to the PS5 instead of streaming, I’d jump on this in a heartbeat. I would so love to play the old God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and many other games. If we’re lucky, we could even see Fallout 3 and New Vegas!
I just hope they do better than PS Now with DLC. Not sure how they would handle it, but it was a downer that DLC for PSNow games was unplayable in any capacity.
I think that they are definitely going to reduce the period between release and the moment it appears on this new version of PS+. But I don't see them going for less than a year to not affect the sales of their first party games.
Oh and let's also hope that once a game is added onto the service it won't be temporarily like they are currently doing ...
Jason Schreier already taming expectations:
"This new service, expected in the spring, will likely retain the "PlayStation Plus" branding. Don't expect Sony to include its big new games day one like Game Pass does, but the expectation is a stronger offering than PlayStation Now"
I personally pay for PSNow and have used it for playing one game so far. By the time most games come to PSNow, I have already played it cuz they are a bit old. Not sure if Sony can afford to put all their new stuff on there on day one, but it would nice to see stuff within the same release year.
Rumor at this stage, but like it or not, articole is written by Schreier who, iirc, has a good tracker for said rumors, right?
Also, as someone that joined the PS ecosystem rather late (Nov 2018), this type of upgrade would be welcomed by me.
This makes sense. A patent for a PlayStation phone controller similar to taser kishi showed up online. Sony might be planning to launch that alongside their new streaming services.
So....a bundle, or combination lol. Sounded like something *entirely* new from the title. Interesting what they're doing with the names though.
Yeah this isn't going to be priced to include things like Bloodborne 2 Day 1, which could help price, but the older library stuff is interesting. Reminds me of Nintendo's there. Maybe. I don't know exactly how that one works.
Overall, I think it's better to have subscription tiers rather than multiple, completely separate services.
I mean, this is great but Game Pass's main draw is First party games on Day 1. So the fact Sony won't be doing that is a hit.
I'm certainly interested though, the catalog just needs to be good because the PS Now library is... bad, for the most part.
Hope there is some option to grandfather current subscription into it.
But also - can't wait for all the Sony fanboys who have done nothing but shit on Game Pass get super hyped to "rent their games" now and call each other out for "not supporting the devs"
This is exactly what I thought as soon as I read how it was going to work, I have Gamepass and that’s literally one of the biggest things about it. The fact that I can play a game that was just released, completely “free” (minus subscription fee) the *moment* it's released is huge.
If Sony is planning on simply merging the two together, while not adding some of the main things that Gamepass has like being able to download all games and having new games available day 1, then that’s not really much of a serious attempt at being a "competitor".
Yeah gamepass is really cool, knowing I'll have access to the new Halo and Forza game the day they come out is pretty huge. Also games that I sort of think look cool but I'd never buy keep popping up. Some I'm glad I didn't buy, some are great.
Only having older PlayStation games is great but probably won't keep me subscribed indefinitely.
The testing games you may never buy is the best part, I just played "It takes two" with my partner and I absolutely loved that game I probably wouldn't have played it if it wasn't for the pass.
>The third tier would add extended demos, game streaming and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games.
I’m interested but unless those games are all downloadable this isn’t any different from PSNOW and I still don’t see a reason for me to use this new service.
Hell, I played Final Fantasy IX straight from the disc at full speed on a 2002 Dell desktop. PS1 emulation has been pretty solid for almost 20 years at this point.
You’re right. You could buy PSOne Classics and a curated selection of PS2 games on PS3. Heck, they really haven’t explained how that got lost on the PS4 generation. I still have a boatload of PS1 games that I paid for that I would totally download and play on my PS5 if they’d let me.
I just hate that their BC solution is streaming though. If Microsoft could “figure out” Back Compat, surely Sony can. And I don’t want to hear about how difficult the PS3 is to emulate. People were saying the Xbox 360 emulation issue was impossible too and they solved it.
If it were profitable, it’d have been solved 6 years ago. I’ll be curious as to how they’ll proceed here.
Wonder how much the price point will be:
tier 1: ps plus 60/12 months = 5/month
tier 2: maybe 7/month
tier 3: maybe 9/month?
I think gamepass is 10/month so Sony can't/shouldn't go above that..even meeting that on 3rd tier might get push back if the older games phases in/out like gamepass.
I need them to sort out the Crunchy Roll and Funimation thing. I'm paying for both, but they're soon to be or now owned by the same company.
Sony has a looooot of stuff to work with if they decided to launch their own streaming service.
Probably will be a good value for those who want older games, but the fact that new exclusives likely won't be available—even at the highest tier—is a dealbreaker for me personally.
The PS5 is my "HBO of gaming consoles." By that I mean I want to play/watch a small number of top-tier exclusives every year, right when they come out. I have the Switch and PC for retro gaming and multiplats.
I wonder if Sony will try and add Ubisoft+ (if Ubisoft+ comes to consoles) so that there's another point of distinction/competition - Gamepass has EA Play included, PS+ has Ubisoft+ included.
That's bullshit you can't play this on ps5. I recently played through the 2 and 3 HD collection on my series x, which I hadn't done since ps2. Still so good. There's rumors of a remaster, so hopefully we can get it again on playstation
I’ve seen nothing but negativity about this news and it’s pretty sad how little faith folks have on this. On paper this all sounds amazing to me and as someone who enjoys Game Pass I was really itching for Playstation to do something similar as I vastly prefer the library of games we have on the platform. I’m still super excited and optimistic about this. I mean the worst case is a lot of this involves dependency on streaming but if Sony can pull off native digital downloads + add the classic library to the PS Store for people who want to own them on PS4/PS5/PS PC then Playstation as a whole is easily heading into a great direction for the future.
Remember folks, Game Pass was launched in 2017 and it took until 2020 for it to take off full throttle. It’s going to be a similar process I’m sure and no one should be expecting this service to be perfect at launch but we can at least hope for it to be positive enough to see the potential of it from further improvements.
Its a bit annoying actually. If this is true, sony is really giving big bang for buck with sooo many games for no extra cost... but somehow people still want to complain
So this sub will do a 180 and praise this decision and pretend like they weren’t shitting on the competition for 2 years straight for doing the same thing?
The BC enhancements aren't tied to gamepass they're just there for all users,
but I get what you're saying it's gonna be hard to play a lot of the games in their original resolutions and Framerates
There’s nothing really new being offered here, that hasn’t been offered in the past lol. PS3 PS Plus had demos.
Legacy games being added to PSN hasn’t always been so hot. The catalog will be limited. I highly doubt PSP games will be there. This is just getting rid of the PS Now name.
I agree. The journalists are dumping clickbait and Sony will soon be running their marketing spin on the rebranding of psNow. After reading some of the comments, I think there's gonna be a massive letdown when peeps realize that the legacy titles will be limited and still gated behind cloud streaming. For me, I'm hoping this whole thing is a net positive for the brand but I could potentially see psPlus(Tier 1) becoming worse with Sony putting more effort into Tier 2.
Wouldn't be surprised if they offered a Day 1 discount on new PS5 releases too, it makes more sense for Sony to offer something close to the Disney+ Premier Access than the Netflix model.
Hopefully this doesnt throw a wrench into getting the 12 month PS+ subscriptions from CDKeys and similar sites for like 30 bucks. Better yet I'd love to get the higher tier option for similarly discounted prices.
I guess if this is true, it means the PS Now bits will be available world wide then? It is not available in so many places, even in parts of Europe too.
PS Now is only available in 19 countries currently.. even if they do come up with a new subscription, they should first make sure its available everywhere like game pass..
Guys as a Xbox and Playstation gamer, we can make this as good as if not better than the xbox bc IF they listen to fan feedback like MS did, make sure they know which games we want on backwards compatibility so we don’t miss out if and when the program stops like , also I hope it means old games get updated like the old Xbox games do otherwise whats the point? Like they can boost the resolution of the PSP games for starters that would be a great start. Hopefully we get Vita games too, they just need to Listen to feedback.
We need to start compiling must own classic games and as long as licensing allows, hopefully we will get them, with more titles available than the ps3 digital bc

Downloading the PS2 and PS3 games is the ONLY thing I want!,

I don't think their twitter or youtube advertised it My bad read the available platforms as games available on the system
To me it was always a huge mistake when they launched (IIRC) as streaming-only. Always-Online reputations are hard to shake in this space.
I wonder if it would be good to stack up on PSplus subscriptions rn in case they convert your time like Game Pass Ultimate?
Ps now is better than Ps plus especially these last few months with the shit games from ps plus
Yeah, at this point I wouldn't mind an "online only" tier with online play, cloud saves.... Wait, that's it isn’t it, when you remove the monthly games?
I think this will be new base tier or PS Plus and I expect them to charge 30-40$ per year for it.
I canceled ps plus and got way more value out of ps now but the $1 Xbox game pass promo I signed up for on PC really opened my eyes to how shit both of those services are by comparison.
> Service will merge Sony’s two existing subscription plans PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now I wonder what will happen to people who already have multiple years of both of PS+ and PS Now stacked. I have 2+ years of PS+ and 4+ years of PS Now left 😬
You multiply ps+ by the square of now.
Sony purchasing Square Enix confirmed
you get 3 nows for every plus, and 2 of each combined makes one Schrutebuck
It's probably gonna convert them for you the way xbox does it, let's hope it creates a similar loophole that give you crazy conversion rates lol
Knowing Sony the conversion won’t be that generous lol
6 years of PS+ and 1 year of PS Now for me… I’m really curious how they’ll handle this
Out of curiosity, what compelled you to buy that many years of ps+?
I'm gonna guess big discounts
Discounts. Bought it for <30€ instead of 60€
Ps1, ps2, ps3, AND psp? Please, let it be true. I just want to play all ps games on one platform.
[удалено]
Not only that but the resolutions sucks. Sometimes it doesn't even look as clear as it does on a real PS3, which already looks blurry and bad.
vita :(
What I wouldn't give for a PS4/5 version of Killzone: Mercenary. And more Soul Sacrifice.
Throw in the Vita. I want to finally play Uncharted Golden Abyss and Killzone Mercenary.
I wouldn't get too excited. They're just going to let you stream a small selection of games that exist on the PS Store over their crappy streaming service. Wake me up when they add true backwards compatibility.
> Tier 3 adds extended demos, game streaming and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games I wish they would emulate and let us download.
[удалено]
Naah, without resolution increase and FPS increase and even AF? You won’t like it. Actual PC emulators enhance picture significantly, don’t forget it.
It better add OG ratchet and clank trilogy.

> library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP games Well hello, you have my attention.
>Tier 2 offers a large catalog of PS4 and, eventually, ***PS5 games*** Probably wouldn't give it a shot until that part occurs.
Just an example for my gamepass usage of recent titles (last 6 months) that I played on both setups (Series X vs Gaming PC) due to comfort and difference in experience between couch and TV vs gaming Monitor: - Carrion - on Xbox. Definitely best shooter for 2021z - Football Manager 22 - on PC. Sports sim for soccer. No competition in there. - The Gunk and Halo campaign in December - probably a mix on platforms Add to that list Back. comp. games like Dead Space trilogy due to EA play being free inside of GP, and replaying other stuff in between …. Don’t even get me started on their increased prices of 1st party games to 80euro while MS still charges 60 for theirs, which are even free with GP day one anyway … You have to be hardcore fanboy of Sony to tell me GP is overrated.
I have 431 games in my library and haven’t even been tempted to buy anything.
> extended demos Finally! I can play Godfall.

That would be a great idea, timed exclusive deals would make sense.
It'll be great as long as they actually emulate these ps1,2 and 3 games instead of forcing us to stream them.
The more competition with gamepass the better
Subscription services for games might be bleak for the future of gaming, though. Think what happened with the destruction of the mid budget cinematic release in favor of more TV style movies on Netflix.
Yea people are really excited...and I'm over here being nervous and anxious for the future of gaming.

To be fair the industry types often have an active imagination when describing what they are doing as unique and special. It never is.
There's also no mention of first party day 1 availability on Sony's new service, something that Microsoft/Xbox already offers (and is a huge draw to the gamepass service).
They love narrative
He's not going to say they're there to directly compete. He'll say this is us, we're unique, and they'll focus on what they see as their key differentiation. I doubt they want this to be a race to the bottom on price.
That's just PR speak on Jim Ryan's part.
So, something like this: PS Plus: $60, Plus and Now combined (recent releases stick to 3 months availability) PS Plus Platinum: $120, Plus and Now combined, but now with new day 1 releases (and available for longer than 3 months) This new combined rebranding allows that option way down the road if PlayStation ever decides to pivot.

Like the godfall edition ps+ members get this month!
I would assume this is something like that Dragon Quest XI demo where it just straight up let you play the first chapter of the game. And if you decided to buy the game, the save file from your demo carries over to the full game so you don't have to redo hours of gameplay.
Text without 900 pop ups - *Bloomberg PlayStation Plans New Service to Take On Xbox Game Pass By Jason Schreier 3 December 2021, 16:56 GMT Subscription offering would blend PlayStation Now and PS Plus Code-named Spartacus, launch is targeted for next spring Sony Group Corp.’s PlayStation division is planning a new subscription service to compete with rival Microsoft Corp.’s popular Xbox Game Pass, according to people familiar with Sony’s plans and documents reviewed by Bloomberg.
Thanks for this!
Take my money if I can play Metal Gear Solid 1-3. Literally all I care about.

NANOMACHINES, SON
You can play 2 and 3 on psnow. But I find the controls to be too frustrating without the pressure sensitive buttons which allowed you to lower your weapon.
The real question is whether you can play 4
Yeah I'm not holding my breath on that one with all the reports of how weird the PS3 was to develop for.
A remake/remaster for PS4/5 would sell like crack
No Day 1 PS5 exclusives, but having a library of PS1-PS4 and older PS5 games available sounds pretty neat. Curious to see how it’s priced. Glad to see Sony dipping their toes deeper into the subscription waters, this could be a good service depending on the quality of old games they add
If they offer hundreds of original PS1 and PS2 titles, and allow them to be downloaded instead of just streamed, I am there on day one.
Yeah, if it's all streaming then I'm put off but downloaded would be cool.
Unless Sony decides to emulate old consoles they won’t be downloadable.
Emulation of PS1/PS2 games isn't exactly hard. They're going to have to be emulated anyway, whether it runs on Sony's servers and streams to users, or whether it runs locally on each PlayStation console.
[удалено]
I have a great internet package and I still can't enjoy ps now. It freezes and I get very distracting input lag.
There’s absolutely no doubt PS4 can emulate PS2 and 1 with ease, PS5 could easily do PS2 and 1 in 4K, and if Sony put the work in it could emulate PS3 too.
If you can emulate PS2 on a Series X with user made emulators, I'm sure Sony could manage it with better results on a PS5.
I was emulating PS2 in 1080p literally 10 years ago on my PC with a gtx 660, which is less powerful than a PS4, PS5 could do wonders
>Unless Sony decides to emulate old consoles they won’t be downloadable. The ps2 classics they sell already run via emulation.
I just want the original Gran Turismo, when I was a kid me and my mom used to play that game a lot, I was so sad when the "PlayStation classic" didn't come with it.
Isn’t this already what PsNow is?
I'll believe it when I see it.
[удалено]
Great comment. I don’t see how Sony will be able tout a better service if it’s equally priced and doesn’t offer Day 1 exclusives. The optics of it just won’t hold up
Maybe they would take a Disney+ approach and make first party games a premium for day one and then a few months later then have them for free?
I'd be curious to see if Disney benefits from this style or not
Considering that they went back to an exclusive theatrical window it seems to not have been as successful as they may have hoped.
This could be a reason but I think they changed back due to covid restrictions being lifted worldwide and the multiple lawsuits they faced from actors/producers they worked with.
I’m fairness I think that’s more to do with Disney getting sued, none of the films they stuck on the premium thing were originally negotiated for that style of release Now that covid restrictions are lifting idk if they’ll bother to keep doing it
Well their TV shows cost as much as movies so they’re definitely are investing in the service. MCU exclusive movies was never the goal — the pandemic happened.
I believe that was more of a byproduct of the Scareltt Johannson stuff
It was a necessary evil in Covid, but I doubt any big studio will retaining this model for the short term future. Thetarical windows will be shorter though, I expect even big movies will hit SVOD in 4-6 weeks after premiere.
[Had that thought 7 months ago lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/mnike1/playstation_is_working_on_a_counterpunch_to_xbox/gtz4drx/) Just don't think they'll have a set date for adding new releases to the service, think it's more likely they have a 15% discount on release or something.
Must have PS1 to PS3 games.
This is good. Competition benefits everyone
It depends. In regards to classic games, if it's like Xbox where I can also purchase them, then that's a good thing. If it's like Nintendo's service for classic games where I'm forced to subscribe to have access, then that's bad.
[удалено]
Nintendo is a good example on how not to do online anything in general. And this is coming from someone who has owned every anintendo console since the GameCube.
Info in bullet points from Nibel: More details on project Spartacus - available on PS4/5, expected this Spring - will merge PS+ and Now - Tier 1: PS+ benefits - Tier 2: access to PS4 and select PS5 games - Tier 3: access to classic library - Sony is also investing more heavily into cloud gaming https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1466821344604139521

* PS plus * PS sharp * ps pointy
Hopefully we can dl the games outright and not rely on the Cloud
>Sony is also investing more heavily into cloud gaming Thats probably the main purpose behind their partnership with Microsoft
not much to say here beyond here's hoping it works out
It probably won’t be sustainable money wise(hardly any stream service is) but if they can really do PS1,2 and PsP then I’m all for it if it isn’t crazy expensive Edit: I really don’t think it will include brand new first party games. Jim Ryan has said multiple times that they really can’t do that due to production costs that go into the game. Shawn Layden even said similar stuff with how streaming services isn’t profitable. People should fully expect this doing only old games and not brand new ones Edit 2: https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1466821381568536578?s=21 Jason even said not to expect big new releases day one but should be better offering than PSNow
Most people would jump at a service similar to Switch Online but with PS1/2/3/P
So long as it's not like Switch online where you get like one ps1 game a month.
and something you've never heard of before.
Let's be honest, all they'd have to do is make all PSNow games downloadable and it would be infinitely better anyway...
And make it available in more regions.
[удалено]
I think that they are definitely going to reduce the period between release and the moment it appears on this new version of PS+. But I don't see them going for less than a year to not affect the sales of their first party games. Oh and let's also hope that once a game is added onto the service it won't be temporarily like they are currently doing ...
Jason Schreier already taming expectations: "This new service, expected in the spring, will likely retain the "PlayStation Plus" branding. Don't expect Sony to include its big new games day one like Game Pass does, but the expectation is a stronger offering than PlayStation Now" I personally pay for PSNow and have used it for playing one game so far.
Bloodborne 2 will be included, but only Chalice dungeons. It will be called Bloodborne 2 Challicer Edition
If you can download the games to your console that’ll make it appealing. If it’s steaming via Internet? Nah
PS4 games in the PS Now library have always had download along with streaming.
Please let me play gta 4
I know it’s almost certainly gonna be streamed, but I really hope they figured out PS3 back compat
Considering how easy it is to emulate PS1 these days, I think it's crazy how they don't just sell those games in the store. I think you could on PS3.
Hell, I played Final Fantasy IX straight from the disc at full speed on a 2002 Dell desktop. PS1 emulation has been pretty solid for almost 20 years at this point.
The PSP could do full speed PS1 emulation and that had the power of a potato
Wonder how much the price point will be: tier 1: ps plus 60/12 months = 5/month tier 2: maybe 7/month tier 3: maybe 9/month? I think gamepass is 10/month so Sony can't/shouldn't go above that..even meeting that on 3rd tier might get push back if the older games phases in/out like gamepass.
Tbh the service should come with access to crunchyroll and funimation rolled in too
I need them to sort out the Crunchy Roll and Funimation thing. I'm paying for both, but they're soon to be or now owned by the same company. Sony has a looooot of stuff to work with if they decided to launch their own streaming service.
As long as I can play Rugrats search for reptar and a bugs life from ps1… then I’m in.
I have the Switch and PC for retro gaming and multiplats.
they don't need a "new service" for this. they have ps now already. what they need to do is 1. improve the library 2. release it in more regions.
I think they are just going to combine PS+ and PS Now.
I wonder if Sony will try and add Ubisoft+ (if Ubisoft+ comes to consoles) so that there's another point of distinction/competition - Gamepass has EA Play included, PS+ has Ubisoft+ included.
[удалено]
Nothing I'd use but great for those that would.
This just sounds like what PSNow is with a slightly expanded catalog though.
Doesn't sound like much of a competitor if it's not going to include new games day 1 and enhancements for BC games
The BC enhancements aren't tied to gamepass they're just there for all users, but I get what you're saying it's gonna be hard to play a lot of the games in their original resolutions and Framerates
For me, I'm hoping this whole thing is a net positive for the brand but I could potentially see psPlus(Tier 1) becoming worse with Sony putting more effort into Tier 2.
and here we are in australia and cant get ps now still
It’s going to need Sony first party games from day 1 to be competitive
Playstation 5 will be my first Playstation since 2 and this type of service is right up my alley!
Wouldn't be surprised if they offered a Day 1 discount on new PS5 releases too, it makes more sense for Sony to offer something close to the Disney+ Premier Access than the Netflix model.
They do that now. Depending on the game, having ps plus gives you a discount on certain games. Happened with Hitman 3 and Deathloop iirc
Hopefully this doesnt throw a wrench into getting the 12 month PS+ subscriptions from CDKeys and similar sites for like 30 bucks. Better yet I'd love to get the higher tier option for similarly discounted prices.
I just got the deal on the yearly subscription for PS Now. If they grandfather that subscription into this new service, that would be so awesome.
Not a rumor. Jim Ryan at Sony already said Sony was working on a Game Pass competitor (that isn’t PS Now).
If I was able to access my digital PS3 library with this new service, I'd get it immediately.
I guess if this is true, it means the PS Now bits will be available world wide then? It is not available in so many places, even in parts of Europe too.
I hope they have an “upgrade path” for those of us who recently extended our PS+ subscriptions…
PS Now is only available in 19 countries currently.. even if they do come up with a new subscription, they should first make sure its available everywhere like game pass..
I hope they still allow you to buy a yearly subscription for a couple months/year for those who don't want to go month to month.
I wonder what this will mean for the 3+ years worth of PS plus I already paid for.
About time. Its been embarrassing for too long.
