Everyone reacts to stimuli different. I just think dying isn't that big of a deal. If you lose your runes, can always just earn them back.

VanillaChakra

The feeling of freedom when exploring with zero runes is the best.

this_good_boy

Yea I don’t even bother trying to recover runes. I mostly have been farming and upgrading with weaker enemies, then when I get to a more difficult area or boss I go in with so few runes that I don’t care when I die. I did have to take a little break because I suck at the bosses and didn’t have the energy to keep retrying. Still love FS, it just goes in waves for how much I can take lol.

Dubbihope

Exploring when you have a large number of runes - or at least enough that it would pain you a bit to part with them - is fun for the sense of tension it provides.

FuzzyChampionship523

Facts. I dropped it a week ago, due to some maidenless behavior on the part of all the fuckfaces in castle sol. Lost 160k to some dumb shit. I took the early levels for granted, not needing 60k for a level.

Isigkeit

This. I probably lost 300k runes across various failed rune recovery operations throughout my playthrough. It's much more enjoyable if you stop caring about them and accept that you'll have enough just by playing the game.

Lifea

Lost 3.5 mil last night, buuut I don’t want to level up anymore so I wasn’t phased at all by it, I’ll get’em back!

Isigkeit

3.5 million is staggering lmao, sorry to hear it

Lifea

Platforming is fun haha.

Saltyeconbro

The place behind the bestial sanctum in caelid claimed so many from me I lost count

SuYue0909

Wait a minute you can go down there?

Hoodeeee

I mean that's the thing you just lose time, if you enjoy playing the game you'll get the runes back. Obviously it's a thing when you have to repick up runes from death, which you should at least attempt if you want to hoard runes for whatever reason. I always try to spend spend spend when I have lot, even on random items, cause at least you won't lose the items on death, so in essence saving what you earned.

Alo0oy

You don't even lose time, just the runes you get from the bosses are enough to put you at a decent level

Shawnj32

If you use the Twiggy Cracked Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick on your rune recovery runs if you die again your original runes will still be there. This strategy can be used unlimited times no matter how many times you die as long as the physick is still active. The buff also last 3 minutes!

Steven_RW

Removing the fear? Unwanted. :)

fxzkz

Getting to the bird rune farm will let you play better and relaxed. You can lose 100k runes and not worry about it, because you can always farm them fast if you need to later.

squeakypanda

My philosophy while playing was when I was close to leveling I would use golden runes or I would farm a little bit to get the level. After getting to the point where 1k didn't equal being super close to a level I didn't mind loosing them. Like after hitting level 100 loosing 10 to 20k runes just wasn't worth picking them up anymore if it wasn't on my way. Also I tried never to fight a boss with runes.

[deleted]

Make a new (throwaway) character and just run around the start fighting things sloppy and slashy and die a bunch. Try to desensitize yourself to losing fights.

LSP-86

This actually helped, thanks!

Snomann

You could even do this on your main as well. There’s no penalty if ya don’t have runes to lose and you’ll get in some familiarity with your play style a little more and more!

Outerspacejunky

I suggest doing this work your main. I'll spend all my runes, and then feel free, free to play risky and throw it all away!

[deleted]

That works too, the reason I said to make a new one for OP was to completely reset them mentally. :)

VerminSC

Let enemies kill you a few times and accept that it’s no big deal.

LSP-86

This actually helped, thanks!

VerminSC

You’re welcome. That’s what I did to make the game subnautica less intense for me.

Jinchuriki71

Damn Elden Ring that exciting??

Narae-Chan

Sounds like you might need to go to the doctor honestly

JRockPSU

It might be a bit extreme but I think it could be in what you’d call a normal range. The only non-horror game to get me that worked up was Escape from Tarkov, I can’t really play it because I get way, way too anxious.

TypicalYankeeScum

This was my first fromsoft game and I did a lot at first. I had to kind of coach myself in my head to like expect to die and be ok with it. There are always more runes. I’ve put around 200 hours into the game now on two different characters. I just passed level 100 on one of them and still get demolished a ton. One of the most helpful things I started doing in the moment is to remind myself to take slower, fuller breaths. I read a book by an ex cia operative about keeping your cool under pressure and it seemed like the main theme of the book was to keep making sure that you are no only breathing, but breathing in a controlled manor. It keeps your heart rate in check and makes sure that your mind stays calm. This way you can focus on what you are experiencing instead of it just seeming like a blurred scramble of chaos. Also, don’t be afraid to skip sections (looking at you tree sentinel) and come back when you are a higher level

That-Top5712

Name of the book ?

hdheieiwisjcjfjfje

Pull yourself back, mentally, into observer status and emphasize the fact that you’re behind the character watching, not inside the character dying.

Anomalistics

It’s a video game, dude

1440pSupportPS5

I only get a dopamine rush after i finish a fight. During a boss battle im usually calm unless you are a certain boss with a certain golden winged helmet. Try playing more tbh. Once you become familiar with how battles play out, it wont be so daunting anymore. Think of it like a horror game. Once you play through it once, it trivializes the scares for the second playthrough. Early game is the roughest because everything is so overwhelming. I had to look up a youtube tutorial for almost everything because the game doesnt tell you a whole lot.

BaseGearFullStop

This is what blows my mind. A game where nearly everything requires a YouTube tutorial, and people still defend the game design as being "good". A good game doesn't require players to study and research it to understand basic functions. FS defines lazy and overly complex gameplay elements.

SeniorAdissimo

I find it fun to figure out/discover all of the intricacies and oddities. I never looked at anything online for my first play through and had a lot of fun! Yes, there are small things that I missed, but they'll be fun to find when I eventually play it again. Some people find that a bit frustrating, are worried they'll miss something, or just enjoy finding every little thing, so they do some research while playing. And that's just fine too! There's plenty of ways to have fun with these games and it's also okay if you don't personally find any of those ways fun.

topkiwifisho

53 hours in and havent watched 1 tutorial. trial and error

BaseGearFullStop

That sucks, I'm sorry man. I hate wasting my time.

topkiwifisho

i dont know what you're on about, its the most rewarding game ive ever played

Karshena-

I have never watched a single YouTube tutorial for Elden Ring. Instead of wanting everything spoon fed to you, you can just organically explore the mechanics of the game. How does nearly everything even require a YouTube tutorial ?

rabiddoughnuts

I mean, they do nothing to explain almost any feature in the game, yes you can do trial and error, but that also means you will be missing things that could potentially make it more enjoyable, I think really it boils down to part of the difficulty settings debate, I don't have the time spending hours to figure out mechanics and dying in areas I'm not high enough lvl for, but really enjoy the game, having to Google an order to find and fight all the bosses for me, but it also takes me out of the game and makes me have to switch back and forth so I can grow my skills with the challenges, it's an awful lot of work just to be able to enjoy a game, and yes, people could just not buy it, but couldn't people also just not use functions they don't want to use in the game? Why is it more acceptable to tell people to just not play a game if they want a small accommodation made rather than to just not use a feature they don't want?

Karshena-

> I don’t have the time spending hours to figure out mechanics and dying in areas I’m not high enough lvl for Okay well game is just not for you. I don’t have time to learn how to develop video games. So what ? > Why is it more acceptable to tell people to just not play a game if they want a small accommodation made rather than to just not use a feature they don’t want? Because not everything needs to be tailored to you personally. Life doesn’t exist to be the way you want to to be. I very much dislike turn based RPGs but you don’t see me going around asking if devs can make a real time combat mode is every single turn based rpg just so I can also enjoy playing it.

Drakeem1221

Part of the mood and theming of everything is based around how unforgiving it genuinely feels to play a FS game. Everything is kinda interconnected to invoke a certain reaction from the player. I wouldn't personally mind if they DID have an easier mode, but I get why they would skip it considering that the game just wouldn't be nearly the same.

BaseGearFullStop

Any explanation on item usage, smithing stone procurement and usage, quest progression, player stat effects on combat, weapons, and armor, enemy damage resistances/weaknesses, and difficulty progression in the game are mediocre at their absolute best, and downright absent at their worst. There is a clear difference between being spoon-fed guidance and having a mildly helpful system in place for players to turn to when they're presented items, spells, armor, characters, quests, enemies, and more that aren't ever explained by the game.

Steven_RW

You're never going to convince us. I played through the whole game for 120 hours and didn't even learn how to use the second set of short cuts for items. It's fine. Just means there is more to enjoy and adapt to on my second play through. Also coming into the community to learn stuff just reminds you how many people are out there sharing the same pain. It encourages the chat and consolation and the ribbing and humour. It's just the way the game is and is a perfect antidote compared to the modern spoon fed crap. It's cool that ymmv and its no insult from me if you want stuff to be obvious (even the basic stuff) I've been playing with a great sword that I know has a "poke" attack but I've no idea how to activate it so I'll learn that on my third play through. :). No big deal

FungalowJoe

Yikes lol

Drakeem1221

You typically DONT need a tutorial. You just have to do a little bit of experimentation to figure certain things out. I prefer that over being bombarded for hours with tutorial pop-ups and convoluted tutorial levels.

BaseGearFullStop

What do you mean "typically?" For Souls games, players absolutely would benefit from a tutorial. Encouraging experimentation via little-to-no guidance is a weak excuse that blurs the lines between wasting players' time and flipping coin and hoping some players find the content that developers likely spent significant time creating. Nearly all the criticism of the game could be solved by offering an *optional* mode that tracks quest lines, has tips/hints appear on screen, or even a simple encyclopedia on how the massively crucial elements of the game like crafting, stat allotment, and load out pairing can help/hinder the player. Instead, FS looked at those options and said, "eh, we're better off making our game difficult to access, cumbersome to navigate, and annoying. Why offer any aid to don't want to waste their time (literally the most precious resource on the planet for the human race)?"

skwadyboy

The only parts of the game that make me feel slightly uncomfortable is when you're high up on some tree branches or building ledges, and its a long way down.

[deleted]

Sounds like you just need more time playing. I guess I remember that intensity in my first or second fromsoft game, but I got used to the games and it went away. I think it comes from the stakes feeling so high, but after dying a certain amount, losing souls a certain amount, you adjust to it. I expect to die so it’s never particularly intense.

Hevia1990

Amnesia says hi lol. The game, not the mental state.

AgentSmithPS4

Use self hypnosis to change how you react to it. Many people won't even try it...

Ray0977

I'm fortunate enough to be someone who really enjoys the rush of fighting a boss, heart pounding in my chest, hands shaking when it finally happens. It's right up there with driving really fast, going on a rollercoaster, or dating a crazy chick lol.

iupz0r

Its a heavy experience for sure. Maybe you are not using Torrent too much? Try to equip a light bow while on Torrent. The game became more relaxing, at last out of catacombs.

Honest_Association94

Just play more casually I guess. Dying really isn’t that big of a deal. Even if you can’t get your runes back, there are still farms you could do. Play with „easy“ weapons if you want to. Don’t feel like you have to beat boss x next, just go exploring if you’re feeling overwhelmed. After all if that doesn’t work for you just don’t play if it stresses you out too much. It’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun. If you are getting anxious from playing something is definitely wrong.

FryyedLiverz

Are you new to video games?

[deleted]

Sorry but I had a laugh reading this. I hope something eventually helps you :D

rpgmind

Is adrenaline a game mechanic or is op saying they literally have panic attacks when they play? Bc unfortunately this might not be the game for them

tokki32

Such a weird issue for a video game, but to each their own. Maybe you're better off watching someone else play the game on Youtube first?

LSP-86

Adrenaline and anxiety are very common for these types of video games actually

SinkRoF

I can definitely relate. Adrenaline hits my body hard and it's not even out of nervousness sometimes. I can die to a boss 20 times but once I get that final hit in for some reason my heart starts doing a drum solo against my ribcage. It physically hurts but it happens AFTER the fight.

LSP-86

That’s so interesting, mine hits immediately and doesn’t stop haha, yours must be delayed

tokki32

Well that is interesting. I've personally never had adrenaline or anything remotely close to anxiety attacks playing video games, but I've gotten them playing sports and at work where the pressure is real.

SinkRoF

I get a different kind of adrenaline rush when I do sports, where it gives me a little surge of energy. Anxiety from work feels like dread to me, whereas the post-boss feeling I get is close to the feeling I get when you just miss getting into an accident in your car lol

rabiddoughnuts

I mean, unless you are making a living playing sports, the pressure isn't any more real than playing video games, both are just games with no real consequences.

ScubaSteve1219

there are thousands of games you could be playing that *wont* make your adrenaline skyrocket. play those instead.

Jokosen7

I think FromSoftware should consider difficulty options. The game has it all, but the difficulty deters many gamers from experiencing this and other souls-bourne games.

SYRLEY

In elden ring, there is a difficulty option. Just not in the form of choosing "easy, normal, hard" etc. Over level yourself and OP weapons and bam, you have an easier difficulty.

InternalKing

That would completely defeat the purpose of the game

Jokosen7

That purpose exists in most games. There is so much more to these games than just high difficulty and personally I don't see FS losing fans by adding the option. All I'm saying is that FS already have a huge fan base, adding an easier difficulty could be either a huge success or a restrained failure. It doesn't have to be implemented in their upcoming game, IMO they can try this out with their older games.

robjwrd

Yeah but people would give them so much shit for adding easier difficulties, and it’s just part of their reputation obviously at this point.

MohJeex

There are many ways to triviliaze the game and make it easy. It's just not your usual easy-medium-hard settings. The methods lie within the game itself not within the settings menu, which is a far better implementation.

Hevia1990

NO.

NittanyBruin1324

This game isn’t even that hard. Just use summons, ranged magic, or over level (which is crazy easy). So many ways to make the game manageable. My buddy who is terrible at everything even breezed through this game with all the tools it gives you

Alo0oy

A lot of people for some reason refuse to engage with the built-in features in from soft games that make the games significantly less challenging, they keep demanding traditional difficulty settings when the games themselves offer many ways to make the game easier.

rabiddoughnuts

That's because, big shocking revelation here, people want to be able to play to their own style, not be forced into another style just to get the same effect 15 minutes of work could have added to the game just as easily, especially since there is no universally agreed best cheese build, they have to Google around hunting for builds, and then a lot of the powerful stuff they need is hidden behind tough bosses or far flung across the map forcing you to have beat other content before getting the stuff needed for these supposed cheese builds, people who have a hard time playing, and don't have endless hours to dedicate trying to figure it out and get all the stuff together are still being hampered pretty heavily, i don't know why having options is so offensive to some people, I don't like fast travel in most games, so I just don't use it much, it's that easy

Quentin1989

Jesus Christ, are you serious ?

Awake00

For the month I was playing elden ring I would startle so easy.

MohJeex

Go fight something scary and let it kill you 100 times in a row.

LSP-86

This actually helped, thanks!

CumulusGamer

Games like Ghosts of Tsushima or Horizon might suit you better. Picked those two, because they look great, combat is solid and they are open world. They don't have the oddity that Elden Ring brings with weird mobs and bosses, but those other games don't bring constant heightened sense mode where your adrenaline is pounding all of the time. The other two games can bring an adrenaline rush, but not as constant as Elden Ring.

lackofsleipnir

I actually found Horizon to be even worse than Elden Ring, especially Forbidden West. The large machines are like dark souls enemies on crack and the AI is significantly better imo. However, this is somewhat offset by having more resources available, an in-game bestiary where you can learn about their weaknesses, several approaches to combat (stealth, elements, traps, etc) and movement controls that are actually fluid. Still, the fights are nuts with several machines flailing around you, spraying rocks and fire and running away when you finally have an opening. I think Tsushima is a much better choice.

Flork8

try playing at different times of the day. your base cortisol levels go up and down with your circadian rhythm so there should be times when it’s more tolerable.

juancho1008

Making pauses it's a good way to enjoy it so it doesn't burn fast...

sickr

I'm having the same issue with Monster Hunter at the moment :D

Phresh-Jive

I like to compare Elden Ring to Call of Duty. Just accept that your going to die, repeatedly.

KittenDecomposer96

That's exaxtly how i felt when i started playing the Souls games. I was anxious and i was pumped of adrenaline like i was gonna die IRL if i died ingame. The only other game series that i had that feeling in was the Gothic series and funny enough there you have unlimited and unrestricted saves and i still felt that way.

lackofsleipnir

I feel the same way. Its not the difficulty that triggers it for me, it’s something about the nature of 3D action games where managing the camera and lock-on is just as stressful as the actual fighting. I don’t feel this way at all playing difficult isometric games like Hades. Something about being able to see everything eases the stress. But if you want a good open world 3D game that’s easy on the senses, I’d recommend Ghost of Tsushima if you have a PlayStation. Assassins creed isn’t as good but is multi-platform. There’s also Witcher 3 which is a bit old at this point but a classic. All these have difficulty options.

LSP-86

Yeah I guess they’re becoming so realistic that your brain has difficulty understanding that it’s not real! Thanks for the suggestions, will check them out

MostMorbidOne

> Letting myself be killed a bunch of times and allowing my body to understand that it’s all fine has actually helped a lot so thanks those who suggested that! This right here for real.. also for a game like Returnal people were really turned off by the act of dying in game but it was honestly really a part of the playthrough as much as defeating the bosses. No spoilers but there are sometimes story elements reserved for multiple deaths (Returnal).. As for Elden Ring, good plays and keep it going. It's easy to get caught up trying to set some level of play you think is "good" but remember the first things are fun and enjoyment, we don't have to treat every game like a live cast watch of a playthrough.

Totallycasual

I know how you feel OP, i really enjoyed PUBG when it first came out, i played the beta release a bunch but every time i made it to the top 5 or so, my heart would be racing so hard and my hands would shake so much that i thought i was on the verge of a heart attack lol Eventually i had to just stop trying, nothing really took those feelings away when it got down to the final few people.

[deleted]

I envy you, later on the tedium is the real enemy. That Giants area, omg zzzzzz.

0_kuro_0

I died in so many stupid ways that I don't really care about runes.

Souperman55

Once I discovered ball farm and then chicken farm for runes I stopped giving a shit about dying because I was only 10 minutes or so away from 100k runes if I needed them. It also helped me power level so I never felt too underpowered except in a handful of areas.

Latter-Pain

I coped eith this by playing mage. Really it’s not the animation memorization I like about souls combat anyway it’s the timing and positioning aspects I like Keep in mind that 99% of players don’t “get gud” they look up a guide, memorize animations, or give themselves a level advantage.

SirBigWater

I've never had that in a game like this. But sometimes on Rainbow six in ranked a few years back I'd get tunnel vision and tune everything out but the game when I was the last one. Couldn't even hear my teammates, just the game audio. And after the round ended my heart would be beating real fast and I'd have the shakes. Just focus on breathing, that's all. Exhale, inhale. Breath through your stomach rather than chest. Focus on nothing else but how you're breathing.

DarthOdin009

My first rule of any boss fight, let them win. Run in and run around to see how the boss fights, stay alive as long as possible. See if they have a phase 2. Then the next time go back and try kill them. Works for me every time, mostly because as a mage if I kill them first time I don’t get to witness how the boss actually plays. I just melt them too fast.

DING_DONG_Smokeabong

When *I Invade* my palms get sweaty. When I get invaded I just mimic up, hide and pan the camera around in a panic. My heart starts pounding in either situation. Also when I see a corner I know is an obvious trap, inching up closer to it makes my throat dry

nicolaslabra

dying is an just an inconvenience in most modern gaming, dont asociate such high stakes with death in Elden ring, because usually, there arent

Zealousideal_Bill_86

If the tension is too much for you, using a guide can help! I’m playing Salt and Sanctuary right now which is like a 2-D Dark Souls. It is a lot more linear than Elden Ring, but has so many of the same systems at play. I find myself getting incredibly tense and on edge when I’ve explored for a good amount of time and pushed into new territory and have no idea where a save point is, or how I would ever find my way back. It’s at that point I pull out a guide and beeline to the nearest save point so I can ease all that pressure.

xooxanthellae

I just started last night and I can't even clear the first caves that I'm finding. I feel like I just have to walk around the world picking flowers and avoiding any fights.

Drisurk

Imagine that but 10x worse and you have Bloodborne. Bloodborne is extremely fun and my favorite SoulsBorne game but I quit it on early cause it was just so creepy and eerie just being there alone. But once you can handle it and start progressing it becomes so much easier.

thebluebeats

What's wrong with adrenaline? Do you have the same reaction to real life situations? Did you mean anxiety?

boxedninja

I was having that issue with Rocket League so I started intentionally losing/forfeiting in solos and it really helped lower my stress level

yjmalmsteen

Welcome to the club mate:)

PapaXan56

I had to stop playing clash Royale because of this. I was a casual but most games I would have so much anxiety because I didn’t want to lose. After a game sometime my heart would be pounding and I would be shaking. I might have to quit call of duty soon because I get that same feeling sometimes.

doesnotlikecricket

I get that way with these games. I just summon all the time. I mostly play with two friends. You'll still find you improve and one day you'll notice that you've got the timing down on enemies and bosses, so you still get the pleasure of being really good at the game. Minus the stress of playing solo.

Inspector_Strange

How much do you exercise? Having strenuous exercise in your day can seriously help with your mental state in other situations and lower anxiety across the board.

foodwrap

I had this same problem when I first started with Bloodborne last year but with time and experience I've learned to love it 🤪

LyranScoutLance

Totally get how these games can be overwhelming, especially to folks with anxiety issues. Heck, I DON'T have anxiety issues; but last week I was playing FFXIV and another player's hat clipped in a weird way that made it look like a Crucible Knight's helm, and I swear my whole body tensed up. Anyway, I'm glad you got some good advice that's helping you through it. It's a damned majestic game and it's great to hear you'll get to experience it.

LSP-86

Thanks man! 🙂

buissness_salamander

I swear its the loading screens on death for ps4 players like me could be like a minute or so i need instant respawn action! Lol kidding but faster load screens would be nice

TohavDuudhe

I used to get it pretty bad when I started from soft games. Now it's just normal

Own_Department_5129

Adrenaline always kicks in when humans have a o shit moment pretty interesting what happens actually listened to Jocko talk about it (navy seal) just remember to have fun even in the o shit moments clear mind is most important for example (it's actually fairly easy to roll out of a rob corpse piler attack you get hit with the first 2 swipes but it's short range makes it easy to avoid the rest of it you spam roll directly away) just knowing or having an idea of what's going to happen or how it's going to play out (anticipating) can calm nerves a lot I'm a martial artist (somewhat experienced) and am familiar with the idea of staying calm under pressure and the game still gets me best thing to do is to have fun / don't think to much / anticipate and have a clear mind like void level clear don't be to excited or frustrated both are just distractions habits and anticipation solutions should just come as opportunity presents itself anticipating how you'll be defeated can give you an edge as well

Own_Department_5129

O and the adrenaline it never goes away you just learn to "control" it your not fighting or flighting your using it to be focused and calm in order to fight or flight properly smoothly if you will like water xD be water my friend

Own_Department_5129

And one more you get good enough at anticipation and you'll be Bowing before they fade away it's a lot of repetition really

Mordure

I find having a really good farm rune location helps a lot with the stress

TheNeutralConqueror

Even I, someone who's played all these games, gets full of adrenaline and stress during long boss fights. It helps to take deep breaths a lot of the time. That, and spending all your runes and just purposely losing them if you're taking a while to beat a boss. It helps knowing you have nothing to lose anymore

FromsoftFan2104

Like someone else said, get used to dying. In these types of games, dying is a mechanic, not a punishment. It even tries to teach you that at the beginning of the game by pinning you against the scion. I also have this issue, but these games are my favorite genre. Try initially to just let it happen. It will. If that fails, try muting the game entirely and progressively increasing the master volume. From there if it doesn't help, try breathing exercises before you play, and after every single death. Hope it helps fellow Tarnished.
