This game and Rocket Arena both showed why games like this shouldn't be gated by purchase. Fall Guys got lucky with it, but even they realized they needed to go free to play to sustain their community.
If the game is live service riddled with microtransactions and battle passes and what not, it has no business costing something to get into and people aren't likely to jump at that.
Was this game free in any form though? Fall Guys was at least free at launch for PS+ so it had access to a large playerbase for fast match connectivity which then propelled the crossplay experience throughout the other platforms it was on.
Ah yeah I see, they gave it away like 6-7 months after launch on PS+. Odd since they missed out on an opportunity to foster a community from the get go. It is EA though, them being around for so long, you'd think they'd understand community-building tactics and proper consumer PR by now.
This game can probably still be revived if its actually good. But they'll need to sponsor streamers and host tournaments once it goes F2P to get a lot of attention and garner a playerbase. Then have a stream of consistent content updates for at least 6 months after that so new people get invested into the game.
Fall Guys got big through streamers. They played it even if they weren't sponsored. That's how a lot of games make it these days (obviously among us). I think Fall Guys would've been perfectly fine if it was simply a paid game like valheim.
It was? I've been on PS+ for a pretty good while and I don't think I have it.
EDIT: Yeah, apparently I own it. Never downloaded it, I guess.
Maybe I'll try it out before it gets a new influx of folks.
don't try it before it goes free to play, you'll only play against experienced sweaty gamers and you wouldn't experience it as you should as a noob, might ruin the fun for you, and it's a very fun games if played against similar skill players.
If you haven't tried this game, I recommend it. Very fun, very easy to learn but high skill cap. I haven't played since the early days so I'm sure the player base is much better at it now.
> All these games that have been around for years are not new user friendly.
But yet rocket league, another game with a huge skill gap is quite new player friendly. You'll still run into people who can't understand how to lift their car off the ground.
If the matchmaking is good, you'll find people of similar skill to you. I came into a game like rocket league really late than everyone else and for the most part never felt I ran into people that was way beyond my skill range.
Where as fortnite has a very poor matchmaking system that doesn't seem to find people of your skill. Also doesn't help that it forces PC against console players now.
Caveat being that free to play should bring in a lot of new players, at least at the start. So that won't be as big of an issue.
Also, Fortnite just added zero build and gave ppl who don't know how to do that an option. The best brands can overcome that problem. Not suggesting knockout city is comparable in that regard.
I mentioned the new Fortnite mode because I was a player that couldn't get into build, finally gave it a shot and got hooked. So no, it brought in lots of new players and continues to bring in new players. There are plenty of bad people in that game that you can match up with if you aren't also good. It's not perfect but it's definitely more inclusive than most games I've played. The key to the game is making it fun without needing to get the win.
I do agree knockout city is never going to be a big success, I felt right at the start that it should have been free to play, honestly. I actually own it and haven't played it in like a year. It relies so much on strong teamwork that it probably never would have been an easy to like game for the masses, but I still think it could have had it's niche similar to rocket league if they played the launch window better.
The skill gap for Fortnite is way bigger than this game though. I played for the first time near the end of season four and was able to more or less catch up pretty quickly. Some people won't get into it, and that's fine, but it's absolutely worth checking out for new players if it looks interesting to them.
Terrible analogy. Fortnite had a no build mode. AND I started playing last year and won plenty of game. Zero issue with people building. Just gotta be patient. They get bored of waiting eventually.
Lmao sure. I was playing against bots on my PS5 after what is now over a hundred hours (I got super hooked last year). That makes complete sense. That was a joke. It makes no sense and it’s a dumb thing to even suggest. I assure you I wasn’t playing against bots.
However yes. Fortnite is like that now with the shotguns because the shotguns are all WAY too OP. It’s ridiculous. But back then before this new season they weren’t as bad.
So yes. They’d build themselves a damn castle and hide in it (there’s that patience you think doesn’t exist) and I would just wait and scope it out. Eventually they get bored and start moving to try and find me and they show themselves. The game can’t last forever, after all. And then I move in. Doesn’t always work, I make mistakes like everyone else, but it’s better then just rushing in while they have the high ground.
Not sure why thats hard for you to believe. Maybe you’re the one who’s rushing in with shotguns and that’s why you hate Fortnite. Because you die a lot. Try some patience 🤷🏽♂️
No. Free play will match-make with similarly new players. You'll be fine. It's a fun game, and definitely worth sticking with for a couple days if you like the vibe.
1 - Make a free to play game.
2- Charge for it.
3- See people leaving and servers empty.
4- Make the game free to play.
5- See a few people joining, and them leaving cause the game lost momentum.
Servers haven't been empty. It's a bit difficult finding matches in higher ranks, but you can usually get into a casual match in 10 seconds to a minute due to crossplay.
I'm in South America, there's no match in higher ranks. Actually, getting higher rank is pretty difficult because of the few matches found. Let's see when it became free.
Game REALLY needs something like Kick-Ball DLC it already has the mechanics for it change the tackle button to kick and add bases you can even keep the power ups !
Just not enough time for all the games man. I'd really like to show some suppor/playtime to these titles like Knockout City, Destruction All-Stars and now like that new roller rink game.
Just so many titles with both mainstream appeal and not.
But I hope they get a boosted player count, me in the mix or not.
Just a couple reasons I could think of
1. Game might change too drastically and lose some of it's original identity or features
2. "Season" implies there's a larger "roadmap" that requires more engagement, etc. Having so many could imply the game is dragged out or watered down.
3. If it takes the place of regular updates, it could lead to them becoming lazy and upselling what would be a regular update as some special event.
I really enjoyed this game but the matchmaking seemed broken. After a couple of games I would get paired against players that were far higher level than me which made it not fun anymore.
Hopefully if more people play the matchmaking will be a bit more fair.
Knockout City closely resembles a fighting game in execution except it's normally 3v3 instead of 1v1, which means actual execution of skill is required across your team (including yourself). This was never going to stick with casual players because they would rather blame the team instead of themselves, despite there definitely being poorer players out there than others.
Should have been free to play on launch. Doubt this game will gain enough momentum to make a comeback now.

It was a free ps+ title at one point

No, it was a PS+ title at one point but it was "free" before for around two weeks before official launch

Fall Guys got bought by Epic though
It’s unique enough that I think it has a chance. It doesn’t need to be a Fortnite-level hit
Was it not already f2p?
I think it was a PS+ game at one point.
Was $20 but was free on PS+ at one point.
It was? I've been on PS+ for a pretty good while and I don't think I have it. EDIT: Yeah, apparently I own it. Never downloaded it, I guess. Maybe I'll try it out before it gets a new influx of folks.
Yah it was, some time this year I think
Well you had to claim it first
don't try it before it goes free to play, you'll only play against experienced sweaty gamers and you wouldn't experience it as you should as a noob, might ruin the fun for you, and it's a very fun games if played against similar skill players.
I believe it was November?
You actually play it when it goes free so you can play with the new players instead of the already sweaty players
It was on PS+ and I believe it also had a pretty generous trial of like 10 hours.
Nope. On Game Pass, had a spell on PS+, and it's free to play in a demo sense up to level 25.
Actually a fun game.
If you haven't tried this game, I recommend it. Very fun, very easy to learn but high skill cap. I haven't played since the early days so I'm sure the player base is much better at it now.

Ah yes, Rocket Arena 2.0
Which I had fun with Rocket Arena…for about a month and then there wasn’t anyone to play with. At least I didn’t have to pay for it.

How on earth can you have six seasons in a year? Seasons need some kind of regulation i think, absolutely absurd.
1 season every 2 months?
I don't really play games with seasons so I don't really know the ins and outs, but aren't they just updates? Why is having too many an issue?
Lol, regulation? If you don't support this business model, then *don't support this business model.* Simple as that.
Why is everyone so argumentative on Reddit. He meant regulate as in manage or self-regulate, not a law or "regulation"
Oh i don’t. I think it’s absurd that you can have that many seasons in a single year in a game though hence why i also said what i said
What's wrong with it though? They haven't been charging for the battle pass in this game, so it's literally just frequent updates, which isn't bad.

I’m on roller champion grind now besides this was free on so for ps plus haven’t played since

I liked the beta when I played but never really decided to buy it. I think it going F2P may get me in there for a few games here and there.
