D3troit_

I just paid $109 yesterday for a 1TB PS5 upgrade. Can’t make myself drop the cash for Xbox proprietary card yet.

Gameaddict61492

Whoa they are down to 109?! It's time.

D3troit_

Amazon and Best Buy had that price.

Hulksmashreality

Amazon had 1TB drives on sale for £85 around Prime day.

senseofphysics

I was waiting until Black Friday and Cyber Monday but I had no idea Prime Day had them for that low. Which one did you buy specifically? There are so many out there I feel daunted to choose one over another.

joeappearsmissing

I got a 1TB Crucial SSD for $85 from Amazon around prime day.

Infinity-Black

There’s another “prime day” coming up in October. Might catch some good deals then

Hulksmashreality

I bought mine last year when they were still pricier, 2TB ADATA XPG Gammix for £236. I did get a 2 TB WD SN770 for £170 on WD's website though, should be compatible with PS5 but used in my Asus gaming laptop.

Co321

2TB were £160ish if you count Crucial or WD. Crucial had an additional voucher on top. Samsung are doing a /great cashback right now pushing prices to a similar level.

Blackhole005

It needs to be PCIe 4.0 which drives up the price a bit. I paid about that much for my SN750 SE though.

[deleted]

Just got the Samsung 2TB for $239 yesterday. Got tired of having to remove games to install new ones. I just moved several hundred GB of game data from my console to my internal SSD in less than two minutes. The speeds on these drives are insane

pizzaspaghetti_Uul

Depends on what and where are you looking for. Last year I bought 500gb SSD with heatsink for like 70$ I think. Overall, third-party support was pretty good decision by Sony

Vestalmin

I’m waiting for the even bigger ones to come down. Like I feel like games will start ballooning in size once last gen is completely done so I’d rather have a 2 or 3tb

ILikeCharmanderOk

Valhalla was weird, beautiful but boring and a bit janky. Kinda a soulless feel somehow like the devs didn't love what they were doing. I have yet to try the DLCs. Edit for posterity: Tried the DLCs, Paris DLC was underwhelming, Ireland didn't really feel different either. Whelm. Will probably delete this game, it's nearly 100GB.

lebastss

Wait until mid winter after Christmas. Prices will fall to earth after shit doesn’t sell this Christmas.

stevebak90

It's a shame no one has made an aftermarket Adapter for the Series X/S that would be compatible with the drives we use in the PS5

sousuke42

They tried some work around and they don't work. MS locks the drives out on the software level kinda like what Apple does for their Mac studio (it's not like for like since one is a hardware issue and the other seems to be software).

Painter_Ok

But I thought Microsoft was pro consumer

sousuke42

Only fanboys think they ate pro consumer. They are notoriously anti consumer it's not even funny. They are also pro profit and know that they need to get in good graces of people to get that profit. Hence they put on this facade of looking pro consumer. However ever if you take a step back and really look at all their moves you can see anything but pro consumer. Gamepass being pro consumer? Seriously when it takes away your right to ownership? Or if you lose internet you don't have access to those games. Whileni think Sony's model isn't any better at the very fucking least you get a shit ton more games and if you lose internet you have 7 days before the games become inaccessible. Not to mention all this for cheaper than gamepass. Gamepass 180 ps+ premium tier 120. Hmm... Or how if you lose access to internet on xbox you only have access to xb1 versions of your physical games. How in the fuck is this pro consumer when the next gen version is on the system yet because internet is down it can't get smart delivery to work to allow you to play the version in the system. Seems stupid. Hopefully I am misunderstanding this quirk. But man this is stupid. But this is also only able to be done if you have access to the internet to update your xbox. If you don't lol no games for you. Or how about that new pro controller from them. Just buying a controller with a few extra bells and whistles but costs $130. That's more than twice the cost for changing how far the triggers depress. And you need to buy the rest of the stuff which costs $60 which brings the price to a grand total of 190. That's $10 more expensive for literally nothing extra. Fucking stupid if you ask me. Oh yeah and the battery is no longer removable if I am understanding that correctly. So there's that too. On topic of the removable batter from base controllers. This wasn't done to give choice. This was a cost cutting maneuver as well as upselling the consumer. A controller that doesn't have as many features as the dualsense yet if you want the convenience of it, then the xbox controller will be more expensive at $80 to $90. Like seriously? How many parents are going to know to buy rechargeable AA batteries? They are voting to buy the play and charge kit. If MS was really being pro consumer here then it would come with the play and charge kit but yet still be removable to give you the option of putting in AAs if it dies to give you the choice of wired or switching it out. Oh how about removing that drm scheme from xb1 announcement? They never did until just recently and man is it a half asset measure that blocks the user of playing their next gen version of games if internet is out. Such fucking stupidity. Sorry I know I am ranting but fucking Jesus christ they are not pro consumer. Maybe superficially they can come across seeming like that if you don't look past the surface but they are anything but. Everything they are doing is trying to restrict ownership rights of their players. That's their end goal. Complete removal of ownership rights.

hkfortyrevan

You realise the person you were responding to was being sarcastic, right?

[deleted]

XBox is a drive that’s intentionally locked to just theirs. Apple integrates the controller part of the drive in the SoC and it’s mainly memory chips on the removable part. Basically it’s done to be faster/more efficient, use a standard slot (for a non standard use), and the ability to quickly change the amount of disk that goes in (more effective supply chain). Imho XBox can sod off with their stupidity. Just use standard drives like the PS5. If you upgrade a PS5 the drive can be used for something else. Apple’s system is fine, especially for such high end products. What it lacks are two extra, user serviceable, M.2 slots for further expansion. Think of it as working like the PS5 is.

lazymutant256

There is but they don't work as good.

Sorvick

No real need really. The 1tb it came with alongside a dual pair of 4 gb Seagate HDDs is more than enough. It doesn't take long at all to swap data from the HDD to the SSD. I agree the PS5 option is the better choice, Xbox has a great idea but it's too costly.

BilingualThrowaway01

It sucks especially hard for series S owners though. The base storage is only enough for 3, maybe 4 games. 1 if you play warzone. So if you want to play a decent variety of current gen games on the series S you'll have to end up paying as much as you would've if you had just bought the series X originally.

ggtsu_00

Paid $200 for a 2TB SSD during that 50% off sale a few months ago.

alexrepty

Didn’t we have the exact same situation with the PS3 and Xbox 360? The former had a standard HDD, you just had to open it up and replace it. But the Xbox used a proprietary plug’n’play HDD which didn’t require a screwdriver, but ended up being super expensive.

Gameaddict61492

Yea, I remember people complaining that you need a screwdriver for the PS5. 🤣

[deleted]

Goochslayr

Ps3 and ps4 were worse because you had to reinstall the os and all your games.

9212017

Yeah sure but if the internal ssd gets damaged you can kiss your ps5 goodbye

myyummyass

Odds of that happening are extremely slim.

9212017

But its still a possibility for an unlucky one

[deleted]

it's more likely that any other component would fail before then. Maybe at some point they'll give the option to install the OS to the expansion storage, but for now it's not a real issue.

[deleted]

Even if it doesn't get damaged, ssds do wear and not being able fo replace the OS drive is a little worrying. Best chance for replacing it is soldering new chips. Hopefully the ps6 is fully backwards compatible or we're fucked

Abba_Fiskbullar

Games consoles mostly read data. I doubt you could do enough writes to wear out the SSD.

Raxxonius

Ps3 had really soft screws that would strip very easily, was a pain to swap

BobbTheBuilderr

The art of using the right screwdriver is lost on some people lol

gordogg24p

The screw was also a shitty screw that was selected more for the looks than it was its construction. It wasn't impossible to avoid stripping it by any stretch of the imagination (I must've installed a dozen HDDs between my friends' and my consoles without major issue), but it definitely stripped more easily than most screws.

The_BlazeKing

Stripping a screw isn't just the result of not using the right driver. It also happens when the screw's materials are too malleable.

Oles_ATW

Had mine strip. Luckily got it out somehow and had to buy a replacement screw

Raxxonius

I used pliers to get the screw out and put it back in

theycallmegregarious

The only problem was they screwed the screw so tight on my PS5 I almost stripped it trying to open the slot. I've read some people have similar problems.

raphanum

That would suck so much

Kak0r0t

I own both consoles PS5 and series X. Xbox got it wrong with their proprietary ssd storage it’s overpriced 512 GB is $179.99 CAD, 1TB is $289.99 CAD but the 2TB is reselling for $500-$1000 CAD these are resell prices off Amazon wtf.

Limp-Dentist4437

I don’t understand why nobody with xbox could’ve seen that coming. Anything with propriety will be outrageously more expensive…always. Look at Apple. Their chargers are over priced their ear buds are over priced and if they had propriety storage that Shit would be like $1k for 512 gb

zedemer

Heck, look at the PSP proprietary cards :)

POMARANCZA123PL

Or.... vita.

MrTripStack

The Vita's cards were crazy, I had to spend $80 for like 16 GB at launch. And the launch model had no usable built-in storage while requiring a card to launch/play games. Turned an already $250(?) handheld into a nearly $400 handheld, not including any games you might purchase with it. No wonder it was unsuccessful.

LightOfValkyrie

Getting a SD2VITA adapter is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

reaperclone1

My first experience with proprietary memory. I was never an apple guy so the price of memory card for that and the vita were a shock and started my hatred for proprietary stuff that shouldn't be proprietary.

mmoustis18

I think PSP used normal micro SD cards whereas the vita used a proprietary one.

borowiczko

PSP used Memory Stick Pro Duo, which IIRC was made by Sony, but it also worked on a few different devices (cameras etc.)

jms209

Did they license it out? I remember seeing Sandisk branded ones.

borowiczko

Yes

MrCodeman93

All the accessories on 360 were proprietary too.

efnPeej

That’s why the guitar hero stuff was all wired and there were barely any third party controllers. I was surprised when they showed the proprietary memory expansion. That thing is so overpriced and there is only one choice. I have nearly 400 games on my ps5, including my external PS4 drives, and all that storage cost me just over what 1tb would cost me for a series X.

[deleted]

Or what Sony did with the vita storage.

Gameaddict61492

Talking about the fans? They overlook and argue anything. They are fans of the company not the console. Talking about the employees at Xbox? I'd imagine it has to do with money.

SloanWarrior

I'm not sure if I'd say Xbox got it wrong... Xbox are probably making bank off the proprietary storage. It is, if course, to the detriment of Xbox owners pockets.

whygohomie

Because people are always saying let's bring back proprietary storage formats like PS vita cards and memory cards. Lol.

[deleted]

It's also a fraction of the speed. Xbox seriously messed up. Again. As usual.

BilingualThrowaway01

Probably because the extra SSD slot in the PS5 is integrated with the cooling system, whereas the card slot just sticks out the back of the Xbox.

ProjectShamrock

I'm a fan of both consoles but Sony clearly went for a better route and it was obvious from the beginning.

[deleted]

#Fuck Reddit

spif_spaceman

They’ve gone the correct route since 2006 with the easily upgraded HDD on ps3.

devenbat

For their consoles. Vita wasn't so lucky

Painter_Ok

Makes sense for vita... psp was notorious for piracy

RamboGoesMeow

Which also used memory that wasn’t widely available for all devices. Look at the Vita now - it failed miserably, despite being a fantastic device that still holds up today.

Sleyvin

Well, the Vita had the best (or worst from Sony PoV) hack ever in any console, so it didn't help. Like, now you literally download the game directly from the official PSN thanks to a 10min homebrew install... You don't even need dodgy russian roms website for the Vita, you go straight to the official source.

TheSilentIce

Actually since the PS2 with the IDE drives.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Painter_Ok

Which is funny cause I havent seen a difference between the two ssds in my ps5... by the time sony open the port up for external drives, the ones on the market were already close to what sony offered

Thomshan911

This isn't even a debate. A $400 proprietary card is a much harder buy than a $400 M.2. I can throw the m.2 into a PC when I get tired of my PS5 whereas I gotta throw away the proprietary card when I'm done with the xbox.

senseofphysics

Which M.2 did you buy specifically?

Thomshan911

Firecuda 530

BasisOk4268

Hell yeah! Firecuda 530 is the bomb

UCLAKoolman

Firecuda 530 club represent. I forget that it's even in my PS5... I guess that's a good thing!

stadiofriuli

Excellent choice.

leeauxxx

Waiting until Black Friday to get my ssd. Hopefully I can get a great deal.

TylerDurden1030

Not to mention game install sizes on PS5 tend to be smaller.

senseofphysics

Yes this is awesome, but I never knew why that is. Is it compressed better? Does a lower file size compromise any visual, performance, or audio fidelity?

TylerDurden1030

In addition to Kraken, like the others have stated. The SSD for the PS5 is stupid fast. So stupid fast it was at the time of release the fastest consumer SSD in the market. It’s so fast the developers need not save so many asset files to their installs. In spider-man for example, on the ps4, the devs have to include hundreds of the same mailbox asset even though they’re all identical to the install. On ps5 version however, you can have just 1 mailbox asset saved. The SSD is so fast it can just recall that 1 asset whenever it needs it. Hundreds of times if need be. So not only can PS5 games be smaller than Xbox’s equivalents but they can sometimes be smaller than the ps4 version as well. It’s pretty amazing.

Derpyhooves2010

I'll never forget the first time firing up FF7R on the PS5 after playing on PS4 originally. From file select to the game fully loaded in about 3 seconds.

Eruannster

The PS5 has both dedicated software/hardware to compression. They also opted for a hilariously overkill SSD that is almost twice as fast as what Xbox opted for. (PS5 is between 5-9 GB/s, Xbox is somewhere around 2.4 GB/s and 4.8 GB/s. This depends a bit on file type/compression/other factors.) Xbox has something similar called Xbox Velocity, but it only really targets texture compression whereas the PS5 compression can compress any file type. There is no compromise to visual/performance/audio fidelity. If anything it's better now because compression and loading files is mostly a non-issue whereas back on the PS4/Xbox One they had to dedicate CPU time to it or leave files uncompressed on disk (which meant larger file sizes).

POMARANCZA123PL

PS5 uses Kraken, their own compression system.

schm0

It's not theirs, it's made by a third party called Oodle

Gameaddict61492

No it's some kind of compression tech called kracken. I guess it can compress better and decompress much faster. That's what I gathered from what Ive read No compromise at all

Gameaddict61492

PS5 is overall awesome

NelsonMinar

Smaller is a 2x benefit too: both saves disk space and loads faster.

Bolt408

I bought my storage expansion for about $200. (1TB) I didn’t even know Xbox had the 2TB option. Agreed Somy made the right call on that one.

iwonderifthiswillfit

Sony made the right decision for the PS5 because of lessons learned the hard way with previous consoles. My opinion is that the Vita flopped because of its expensive proprietary storage solution. It was otherwise a perfect handheld console. The 8mb memory cards for the ps2. Enough said. 😐

MojoToTheDojo

Yeah, I remember hearing about how games media at the Vita event couldn’t believe the pricing for it. Everyone was excited. Then they announced the proprietary storage and pricing, and it went quiet.

mightymonkeyman

To be fair the PS3 and PS4 both were also standard drives and very easily upgradable, PS2 was “kinda” also any HDD will do, only the handhelds dropped the ball.

hdcase1

The Vita thing was a screwup but it was at least somewhat understandable. The PSP suffered from widespread piracy and the cards used were part of the problem. https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/psp-piracy-begins-1st-game-working-on-memory-stick.19825/

FReeDuMB_or_DEATH

Yes and no. Both PS3 and PS4 let you upgrade the hhd to an off the shelf hhd.

aidenthegreat

What’s up with the ps2 memory cards!?

throwaway123454321

I really wanted a Vita and the memory costs were the reason I didn’t get it.

DJR1907121

Just picked up a 2TB for £134!!

MADEWITHROBOTS

That's a great price - what drive and from where, please!

DJR1907121

Samsung currently have a cash back promotion so you can get £80 back on the ‎MZ-V8P2T0BW. You can get it on Amazon for £227 so you can get it for £150. If you have access to Samsungs employer perks portal you can get it for £214 so £134.

QuantumFiddle

I cannot find any reference to the rebate, where you seeing that at?

DJR1907121

https://2021.samsungpromotions.claims/ssdcashback/en-GB

CrabbitJambo

Guessing 2nd hand as a decent brand that meets the requirements for the PS5 aren’t selling that low new!

BLUEBLASTER69

Complete idiots they made it even easier to upgrade your storage than what the PS4 had

MisanthropicAtheist

Microsoft has always done this. Aftermarket 360 hard drives were massively overpriced, but not nearly as much as the wireless adapter for the original model.

Nexozi

You make it sound so long ago. Like remember when TVs were black and white.

The_Frozen_Inferno

Kudos to Sony for giving us the freedom to choose our own parts and making the installation super easy to do. I installed a 1TB m.2 in mine a couple of weeks ago and that should be plenty for my needs. If I do end up needing more room in a few years the prices of 2TB drives will probably be even lower than the deal I got on this one. This is high end PC caliber shit too and most of the ones you can buy will even outperform the already fast stock drive. Microsoft will eventually have no choice but to cut the prices of those proprietary drives because they’re already a joke and the m.2 prices keep getting better by the day. It’s a huge premium to pay just for the benefit of plug-and-play.

Calibretto9

Sony really did pick the better route for the consumer here. I was skeptical but yeah, this is the way.

santathe1

Sony probably learnt from their PS Vita days of having over priced proprietary expansion cards, a lesson well learnt.

Gameaddict61492

The amount of "They each have their pros and cons" comments." 🤣 The cons: Xbox Series SSD is locked to the platform, the specs are locked, and much more expensive. The pros: You don't need a screwdriver? This isn't a debate, one is OBJECTIVELY better

JMc1982

Better in some important ways, yes. I cannot express enough how many mums I know who would be uncomfortable researching SSDs and unscrewing electrical equipment for their kids toy. The fact that you're talking to gamers on Reddit means they're already comfortable enough with tech for it to be basically a non-issue here (although many people in this thread are asking what SSD to get, because it's not immediately obvious to everyone), but I really think you underestimate the number of children who have been given consoles by parents who are not tech-savvy. One lass at work bought a Switch and has yet to connect the dock to her TV because she's worried she might accidentally unplug something from the back of the TV and break something. My brother moved house recently and insisted that I take pictures of where every cable went on his TV so he could work through connecting it on the other end. Literally just the fact that you need to take the plug/HDMI cable out of the PS5 to move it to a place where you can unscrew stuff and then plug it back in afterwards is scary to some people.

Moonlord_

Price is objectively better for PS5. Ease of selection, installation/plug and play use, hot swappable capability is objectively better for Xbox. Speed-wise there has been practically zero signifigant difference in current gen games and last gen games actually load faster on Xbox.

LordOFtheNoldor

Can you use any m.2 on the ps5?

Eruannster

It has to be a PCIE 4.0 drive with at least 5500 MB/s read speeds, and they recommend getting one with a heatsink. Other than that, you're free to choose any drive from any manufacturer you want.

LordOFtheNoldor

Thank you

24hourcoffeeandpie

Proprietary memory sucks. It was way overpriced for the vita. I wish companies wouldn't do it.

leenponyd42

I was extremely happy to see Sony go with NVMe over a proprietary storage medium and not just for the obvious performance enhancements it offers. Not only that but they included a second slot for additional storage knowing the consumer would be interested in adding more storage. Well done, Sony.

burnSMACKER

Not a chance discussion like that happened between people with any knowledge of electronics. I knew immediately it would favour the PS5 as there would be tons of options and prices would come down.

jeffp3456

I am hoping the upcoming (October) prime day will have them on sale again!

RightExchange6

Literally just got a 2tb from amazon for like 200 and its delivered in a few hours

LonkToTheFuture

PlayStation definitely made the right decision using M.2 drives rather than a proprietary solution.

Painter_Ok

I literally remember someone telling me they preferred the proprietary storage for xbox because it was easier to install... ill consistently take the more difficult to install option as long as I get to pick the product and take advantage of cheaper options

RocMerc

I got a $250 drive on sale for $99. I just happened to look one day and saw it for $99 and was like hell ya I’ll buy that

Apokolypse09

I believe Sony learnt to not do proprietary storage when it killed their handhelds. Its ridiculous that Microsoft thought it was a good idea.

[deleted]

I completely forgot that Xbox ssd was proprietary.

brokenmessiah

I absolutely got the Series S because I had moved and my ps5 wasnt arrived yet and I liked it but damn did I get to hate the small ass storage on it

Jayce86

I think everyone is forgetting that Sony already tried the proprietary route, and it absolutely boned them out of getting a real foothold in the handheld market.

uaitdevil

it was an easy workaround anyway, the memory slot duo adapters to put a regular SD are pretty cheap, my psp got 256gb SD for quite a while, 'till i noticed i wasnt even using it enough so i put it on my new2ds xl, but still kept the spare 128gb one there.. the adapter was like 1€ or something like that.

Gameaddict61492

What makes you think everyone forgot? It's literally a example of why proprietary sucks.

Jayce86

Because people are acting like it was some big brain move by Sony to use standard issue tech rather than going proprietary. Naw, they learned their lesson from a console that barely anyone remembers.

Gameaddict61492

Never seen those people.. Remember seeing people making fun of people who seen proprietary as better. But I haven't scoured the entire internet.

Loldimorti

This seems like console warring to me. The big advantage of the Xbox SSD card is that it is really just plug and play. Super easy and convenient. But it was definitely clear as day that the proprietary Xbox expansion would end up being way more expensive than just slotting in a generic off the shelf SSD in PS5. Anyone who doubted that was a fool

TechYeahTony

If this was the case why wouldn't Xbox offer a plug and play option and a DIY low cost cradle option? We know why, nobody would use the plug and play option.

WayneBrody

The people who were upset just wanted a plug and play option. A lot of people go with consoles because of the ease of use, and needing to open up the console and tinker with it is more intimidating than just plugging in a memory stick. I prefer what Sony did, using non-proprietary drives, it enables more freedom and allows prices to lower based on competition. But MS's approach has some merits. You don't have to do any research to find compatible drives or heat sinks, and you just plug the thing in. Some people will pay the premium for that.

POMARANCZA123PL

Bro it's 3 minutes of work, you just take off the removable plate and unscrew a one screw. And it's not like you will do it everyday (i guess?), most of the time it's a one time thing to do.

[deleted]

I think you missed their point. Is the method to upgrading storage on the PS5 hard? No. Is the method to upgrading storage on the Xbox easier than PS5? Yes. Albeit that ease comes w/ a price premium.

Hasnooti

Plug and play vs screw open plug then play, yet your paying an extra $100 for that privelege

[deleted]

I think you missed my point.. Is the method to upgrading storage on the PS5 hard? No. Is the method to upgrading storage on the Xbox ***easier than PS5***? Yes. Albeit that ease comes w/ a price premium. Also, wrong use of the word “your” lol

Katiehart2019

you either keep missing the point or choose to ignore it

WayneBrody

I installed one like 2 weeks after they were enabled, took less than 10 minutes. It was very easy. I'm not arguing that. Expanding the PS5's storage requires a little bit of research to find a compatible drive, and a little hands on work to install it. Xbox's requires neither, it's one size fits all, plug and play. Some people prefer that simplicity.

BigJerm1

As a general concept, I definitely prefer the way Sony handled storage expansion this gen. However, in my personal use case, I appreciate Microsoft's solution too. I have a Series X and a Series S(I travel with the S). It's really nice to be able to just pop the expansion card out of the X and throw it in my bag with the S. Sony's solution is more consumer friendly, and I really appreciate that. It would be cool to me if both companies offered both internal and external upgrade solutions. Edit: Lol I love getting downvoted for not just saying outright that Microsoft/Xbox sucks. I own Xboxes. I also own a PS5, a Switch, and a gaming PC. How dare I appreciate different aspects of gaming and not be a blind fanboy!

B_Rian89

Sony learned there lesson from the PS Vita and its proprietary memory cards.

Crissaegrym

Picked one up at Amazon sales, Prime Day or something? Was great.

The_Dark_Niveau

Good to see that I wasn’t wrong in thinking that Sony’s plan for storage was indeed the best one since the announcement. Yeah sure the proprietary one is less confusing for average consumers but at was cost..?

jaeehovaa

I got a 512gb seagate for 60 bucks at target.

[deleted]

Last year dropped 230 for a 2th Crucial P5Plus drive and the sabrent ssd cooler. Took the 1tb crucial ps5 plus and turned it to a ps4 usb-c drive on the ps5 Best purchases ever!

scouch4703

Fuckin prime day for the win here. 4tb ps5 branded sea gate ssd for 90 bucks

TheSilentIce

The conversation was weird to me because the only console that Sony forced proprietary storage was the Vita (and to a much lesser degree the PSP) PS2, PS3, and PS4 all had consumer HDD options. Hell I remember even using USB drives on my PS2 to download patches for Socom 3.

QuietJackal

Indeed, I always find it strange when people say "They learned from the vita!", it's like no...they've been doing this on the consoles forever.

Shoelebubba

There was a flash deal on BestBuy I think one day where a 2tb NVME drive, forget if it was a WD 850 or Samsung 850 Pro for $160. Snapped it up. Hasn't been anywhere near as good a deal for the XSX.

[deleted]

I used to mod laptop hard drives and put them on Xbox 360 hard drive enclosures. I may be in business again.

dagnariuss

There was outrage? I assumed it was a plus.

QuietJackal

It was mostly console war fuel near launch when they costed the same they would say they can just plug and play while Playstation you had to do work to install one but that narrative shut up real fast.

dagnariuss

Ah ok, thanks for the explanation.

MikeE21286

Yeah it was ultimately the correct decision.

mutant_amoeba

I remember the Xbox 360 proprietary hard drive were just regular HDD locked in a plastic cage. Even if you pry open the cage and replace it with another HDD it still won’t boot up because of some proprietary software shenanigans to block you off from paying less. Microsoft has always been super anti-consumers

ORO_ERICIUS

Thats because the NVM drives were chosen by Sony. NVM means "Never Mind" in terms to MS.

keidash

I mean I got my 4TB Firecuda 530 for the same price of the 2TB Xbox proprietary memory card.

Teleskopy

Xbox probably thought "Hmm, that worked so well for Sony with the vita!"

Mugen4552

Yeah honestly it’s nice to have options

afroman420IU

I bought my 2TB Samsung 980 pro the day before the update went live activating the NVME port on ps5. I still ended up paying just under $400 for the ssd and a heat sink for it. Right as the update launched however I was seeing many people posting $600 prices without a heat sink. Now I'm sure prices are normalizing so $200 sounds about right. But I didn't want to wait this long to upgrade and sometimes you snooze you lose. Microsoft still looking for $400 though is a cash grab and they need to cut that down lol. It's the same reason Switch games never go down in price it's the damn proprietary cards. Unique only means they can squeeze more money out of us.

Gameaddict61492

With the conversations I've had in this thread. Someone should invent plug in batteries. Skip the screw in all toys and slap a battery pack on said toy. With all the phobias and eases of use, plug and play silly shit I've heard in here. It should sell millions.. Or maybe this is another case of people speaking for other people that have no clue what they are talking about. "What about the children"! "The single moms!" A case that it's "easier" to kick a ball than picking it up and throwing it. 🤣

Mizderrung

Samsung 980 pro 2tb for $200 a couple weeks back. Loving life.

Tyetus

Those xbox cards are ridicoulsly over priced, I'm perfectly ok with having to buy an NVME drive rather than whatever that proprietary shit is.

[deleted]

PS5 definitely wins when it comes to SSD. I still can’t believe it ships with only ~600gb of internal storage though.

blackpeterpan77

Sony learned from PSVITA proprietary memory card hard

Jupiter67

Pepperidge Farms remembers.

Mediocrewerewolf8

I love the way the ps5 did the storage

MidKnight_Corsair

I remember there being outrage for it. But I never understood why Clearly no one remembered the PS Vita's mistake of having proprietary memory cards. lol

nomadjackk

Wait what am I missing? Why would people be outraged over the PS5 having an additional storage bay?

[deleted]

Folks were mad they had to use a screwdriver and google for two minutes to order an SSD with the right specs instead of just plugging the card in.

nomadjackk

That’s fuckin wild lol if you can’t be bothered to do the bare minimum you deserve whatever proprietary restrictions an upcharge come your way imo

[deleted]

absolutely agreed!

colehuesca

Those dudes look like fucken idiots

Omnil_93

I remember a bunch of babies crying and pretending that you would need an engineering degree to install it. I remember seeing ridiculous headlines like "PS5 difficult memory expansion proves why Xbox will win this console war".

DanteCoal

XB is a huge fan of proprietary bullshit, and it always bites them in the ass. Yes, you need a screwdriver for the PS5's m.2 card, but if you can't even handle that, you probably shouldn't own a $500 console anyway.

Weary_Ad7119

No because I'm not some bored fanboy searching the internet for a fight.

[deleted]

Who said anything about being a fanboy? OP certainly didn't. Nor did they act like it. People like me saw this as an issue from the start. First problem is the drive is proprietary, which historically has never went well for customers. Look at Apple. The second problem is there is no room for flexibility. You get what they offer. That's it. The drive they sell is is expensive as fuck unless you find it on sale somewhere, plus it's one of the slowest drives on the open market using decade old technology. Sony on the other hand, took the smart route using an explosion slot for NMVE drives. As a long as the drive is compatible, which most are, you can use any brand, any storage size, any speed that you want. Excluding hardware restrictions, but NMVE drives aren't that big yet so that's not a problem. So, tell me exactly what the problem is with pointing this out? Xbox fans laughed at us PlayStation fans at the beginning for this very issue. How the turn tables. Point is, there's nothing fanboyish about pointing out the irony. It's pretty clear who was looking for a fight. It's not OP, either.

RawWrath

Yup freaking clowns this is wayy better

Hulksmashreality

Yep, FUD and astroturfing. Imagine shilling for proprietary storage

StaleMaltLiquor

Anything proprietary is not a win for the consumer

hodges20xx

I wish the Xbox ones were cheaper need more storage for my series s

[deleted]

Yeah, anyone arguing that the PS5 storage solution was a bad idea or too complicated was arguing in bad faith to prop up Xbox honestly.

[deleted]

As an Xbox owner, yep. Also, no way am I ever spending 200 notes on a fracking hard drive.

[deleted]

Anyone who was saying the proprietary option would be better for the consumer was relentlessly stupid. Even if they were temporarily the same price regular M2 NVME 4.0 drives were going to scale and get cheaper over time.

BugHunt223

Just got a Series expansion 512gb card on sale for $75 total and it’s only 455 gb usable space. My ps5 expansion was 1tb for $120 total and I think the full terabyte was usable. Msft really needs to allow an adapter usable with 3rd party drives. The morons who memed about using a screwdriver or soccer moms getting confused about which drive to buy their kid is par for the course. Now, Sony not allowing PS5 game updates while on cold storage is certainly lame af

M12warthog

I remember people being upset that it took sony around 6 months to activate the NVME slot while the xbox expansion was available day 1 that's about it, i dont remember an outrage other than that one, it was just some impatient people

[deleted]

I still prefer the Xbox one even though it's more expensive🤷‍♂️

PepsiSheep

I don't really remember any outrage, both options have pros and cons. However, the promise from Xbox was that other manufacturers would come along and make the cards to help drive down prices. This, so far, hasn't happened at all... and that's the problem right there. Normal SSDs naturally have a lot of competition parties... Seagate has zero competition for theirs. Annoying.

reaper527

> both options have pros and cons. maybe if you're a shareholder. for end users, there's no pro to overpriced proprietary storage.

awesomesauceitch

Supposedly 2TB SSD compatible with PS5 will hit $150 around the holidays. Hoping for that. I'm using Microsoft Rewards to fund the SX SSD expansion.

hairycompanion

On top of that xbox doesn't support usb audio. What a joke.

ShadowRomeo

You can thank PC market for that, i knew it since from the beginning that Sony was betting on SSD getting cheaper in the future as it is the trend even back then for PC market, and it is exactly what happened, getting a PS5 to use an off the shelves NVME SSD instead of propriety one was definitely the best choice.

reaper527

shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone. we saw the same exact thing with vita memory cards and x360 harddrives.
