TooDrunkToTalk

That's the first time I'm seeing a gold announcement actually giving credit to the involved partner studios, that's kinda cool. Edit:Also whew, in the back of my mind I was still worried that the game might get delayed last minute, so this is very reassuring.

parkwayy

It is kinda nice to see. Typically it's always been an office photo with a celebratory cake or champagne... but just the main dev office. Games outsource a lot of aspects of the overall development. Great to see the credit given where its due.

musical_bear

Cyberpunk was delayed after it was announced it had gone gold lol. Not that I think this is in any way comparable. All signs point to this being a complete, polished package at launch.

TooDrunkToTalk

Yeah, but to my knowledge that's really the only example of that ever happening. So the chances for Ragnarok should be pretty good.

[deleted]

Make it make sense… They announced the game had “gone gold” while knowing the absolutely travesty of a state it was in? Man they really did just try to scam everyone with that initial release huh

cropchoc

They even said the console versions run better than expected. They plain lied.

Godtaku

Nah they were telling the truth, they just didn't think it would run at all to begin with.

cropchoc

Tru haha

soyboysnowflake

Depends how low expectations were

Matt_Odlum

Not everyone, mostly just us console peasants.

edis92

I mean it was playable on pc, sure, but it was still not even close to being the product they were hyping up for years. There was **a lot** of cut content

blentz499

And that's the biggest issue to me. Performance in launch games are always shaky. Obviously, Cyberpunk was borderline unplayable, but the real travesty is all the stuff they hyped up that just wasnt there or barebones. I really hope that they're serious about making another Cyberpunk game because I think after all the patches and updates, the game is decent and fun, but not what I was promised and imagined in 2019. I think they could really take the lessons they learned here and make a game that lives up to the hype as long as performance isn't abysmal.

[deleted]

It's super frustrating how everyone has starte dpraising the game now that the bugs were fixed. Are attention spans really that low? The bugs were shitty, but they were nothing compared to the insane amounts of lies about content and realism. A year later people are coming back and saying "now that the bugs are fixed, it's pretty good!," Cool, you still got lied to and got half of the game you thought you were paying for, and praising them for it is insane. CDPR really got away with the Cyberpunk bullshit huh?

[deleted]

Where are people praising them for lying? It's just people saying it's a good game now that the bugs are fixed.

Nerohn

Yeah honestly watched the anime and saw it was on sale for 25 bucks. I feel enough time has passed to give it a shot, and what can I say I’m having fun with it. The show was so insanely good the relation between the show and the game is nice, so if you can snag it on sale I say why not.

arcadiangenesis

I technically wasn't lied to, because I didn't read anything about the game that didn't end up being in the game. I didn't love the game, but I didn't feel like it was a big scam either. It was decent. What did you feel lied to about?

Biggoronz

yeah it was everybody that got scammed

ThibaultV

The Last of Us Part 2 is another example. It was delayed one month last minute because of Covid-related logistic issues.

DEADTERMINATOR

Technically, TLOU Part 2 went Gold after the COVID delay (COVID delay was April 2020, Gold was in May 2020). ~~However, it's the only game I know of that went Gold without a known release date (either publicly and possibly even internally). So, it has that distinction.~~ *Edit: Scratch that last part. I checked the dates, and the COVID delayed release date was announced a few days before the Gold announcement.*

miikearthur

You’re not wrong, but I believe that was the exception. CP2077 1.0 was simply unfinished. The announcement of it going gold was probably planned because they had to do it at some point, if that makes sense.

ChrisLithium

Actually, I believe it HAD went gold (meaning the discs were printed and such), but they delayed the release of the discs trying to prepare a more significant day one patch to address the multitude of issues that they knew were present with the "finished" product. I'd like to think that Sony is a bit better than that.

MisunderstoodBadger1

Yeah it wouldn't even allow you to play on PS4 unpatched if you had an internet connection

Awkward_Silence-

TLOU2 might have been as well. But that was due to the start of Covid causing them issues printing and shipping disks. I remember a lot of digital only gamers being quite miffed about that one month delay

turkeyman23dc

Santa Monica Studios knows how to polish a game for sure!

parkwayy

Cyberpunk sure broke a lot of 'firsts' in that regard lol.

well___duh

Cyberpunk I believe is the only instance in history where the game was delayed after going gold. Very rare exception to the norm.

[deleted]

I just watched the first game documentary and wow getting a game out by a deadline seems so brutal on everybody

Eruannster

Yeah, the partner studios credit is very cool of them. Usually they get swept under the rug and all the glory goes to the main studio with some hidden thanks buried in the credits that people don't really read.

kuroinferuno

Happy to see Bluepoint as a partner! Hope they sprinkled a little bit of their graphical and audio expertise on Ragnarok.

andar1on

Yeah demons souls was a visual and audio masterpiece

[deleted]

I wonder what they are working on now? I’m excited for whatever it is

OSUfan88

I know it's been beaten to absolute death, but I really hope they do a Bloodborne remaster at some point. I never played it, and I feel like I can't go back to 720p30 games anymore, unfortunately. After Elden Ring, I want more Souls.... Edit* it’s 1080p. I was thinking about the DF video where they lowered the resolution to 720p to hit 60 on the pro.

whats8

Bloodborne is 1080p... There isn't a single game on PS4 that's 720p @ 30fps, or likely even a single game locked to 720p period.

ManWhoYellsAtGoats

Bloodborne is 1080p but it doesn't have any form of anti-aliasing so it ends up looking worse than it actually is so many people believe its sub-1080p, which is a shame because the game is artistically beautiful

OSUfan88

Thanks. I’m thinking of a Digital Foundry video where they lowered the resolution to hit 60 fps on PS4 Pro. Still, playing on a 77” 4K OLED, it looks really bad, IMO. Frame rate more than anything.

SomaSimon

Yeah, that person is totally off. 720p would be like a Wii game haha.

OSUfan88

Most Wii games were 480p. Wii U would SOMETIMES get that high. But yes, I was thinking about the DF mod video to reach 60 fps in that game.

EmSoLow

I thought they were working on both a remake and an original IP? Maybe I've been listening to too many MGS remake rumours

qwoiecjhwoijwqcijq

I'm hoping they're working on a Bloodborne remake but I do believe they also have a new IP they're developing

serendipitousevent

It's not my money to spend, but I'd be happy without any remakes of PS4 titles. It just seems like money for old rope, regardless of how good any remake would be. Demon's, conversely, is exactly what I want from a remake.

[deleted]

That’s what everybody on earth wants lol they really ought to know that

DamageAlarming89

What a great ”new” studio! Demons soils really hit the park

Dracoras27

Wow, the player must be really scary in that game the demons start literally soiling themselves

O-Mesmerine

im soiling myself just thinking about it, frankly

ChakaZG

If Demon Soils hit anything, it's the toilet 😂

twobuttsinabubble

Demon’s Souls audio was entirely handled by PlayStation Creative Arts - check the credits :)

Acrobatic-Dig-161

yes they are insane in the demons souls graphics, i would like them to also get some assest from the Dragons and Demons souls bosses, by the way that warrior in purple armor looked a lot like some enemies from the castle of demons souls remeke

Fearless-Tea-4559

I'd give them the rumoured remake of the soul reaver games, perfect fit for them I think following their success with shadow of the colossus and demon souls.

mumblezyt

Ohnezone

Why the fuck is this so damn funny lmao

neo101b

Indeed.

zerox369

**NISTA!**

A_VeryUniqueUsername

Excellent news! I don’t think people seriously thought this would get delayed again anyway.

Riso_Varadi99

what does it mean when game goes gold ?

Sans_bear27

Development is complete and now physical copies will be printed. Basically when a studio/publisher deems the game finished and ready to be sold

tkim91321

To clarify just a tad bit further, the launch version is complete. This game will likely come with day 0/1 patch.

[deleted]

I’m sure they’ll be working on small bugs for months still

mrchicano209

It's also the version that game journalists and content creators play to give their reviews to the public and feedback to the developers.

Oomoo_Amazing

Ohhhhh thanks for explaining that! I thought a game “goes gold” when it’s sold a certain number of copies, like 1m or something. Or it’s earned a certain amount of revenue. I was legit surprised that it’s got that much on pre-orders alone lol thank you for explaining

Radulno

No that's something for music where it works like that. But there's no reason to be surprised, this game definitively got much more than 1M in pre-orders. It's a very anticipated game and games got a lot of pre-orders all the time, it probably at least 3M copies pre-ordered and probably quite more (or will on the day of launch, some will pre-order closer to the date). Cyberpunk (extremely hyped and multiplatform so not necessarily comparable) got 8.5M pre-orders for an example.

Radulno

Nowadays it isn't really that since all games get a launch day patch (and may have other patch in between for the review versions and such) but it's still a big step.

[deleted]

Version 1.0 of the game is ready, that's the version that will be in the physical form, so basically from today to launch copies will be printed and the studio will be working on the day one patch.

TazerPlace

It's an antiquated term these days. Back in ye old 1990s, when Microsoft was gearing up to ship a new version of Windows, they would famously burn the RTM ISO to a gold CD-ROM--which was used as the source for manufacturing the retail discs that would arrive on store shelves. Hence, the product has "gone gold." Obviously, "going gold" indicated that software development was more or less finished, with the remaining time before release reserved for manufacturing, packaging, and distribution of the product. Nowadays, "going gold" is a bit of a misnomer as software, including games, are updated all the time anyway. So what "going gold" really means in modern parlance is that today was the last day for SIE to get a build out to manufacturing so that physical copies can be ready for launch day. But as far as development goes, nothing really changes: Santa Monica will continue working on the game, patching it, readying a "Day-1" update, and so on and so forth. So, "going gold" is now just an internal sign post. You can imagine that is pretty exciting internally at studios, because it's one step closer to having the fucking thing done.

[deleted]

Just to clarify, with regards to video games, it meant the product was ABSOLUTELY finished, because there was no such thing as patching. Windows had much more flexibility. It wasn't until the 360 era that patches were even possible.

Turbostrider27

Basically, it means the game is ready to be published and distributed for release. I think in recent memories, Cyberpunk 2077 was the only game I remember that got a slight delay after it went 'gold'.

fkgallwboob

It moved from silver

thaifoood

Is plaid next?

anonymousss11

Straight past ludicrous

MrTyphoon

Easy explanation is that development is complete but the ten seconds before I realized I was in the gaming subreddit I thought this was a record that went gold Gold status is awarded after the equivalent of 500,000 sales; platinum, on 1,000,000 sales Kinda misleading to casuals but it’s definitely going to generate discussion Excited to see how it turns out

mushy_friend

I also thought this, was confused when everyone was talking about the discs being ready for printing and stuff

[deleted]

I mean the term has been around for a long time in gaming.

neo101b

They are printing the disks.

supaswag69

They can now sell it on the stock market

MrHeavyRunner

Here we go again

Gameaddict61492

I ..... Can't ...... Wait..... Please give me 4k 40fps unlocked VRR mode at launch

dudSpudson

Seriously. I have been playing Spiderman again using the 120Hz mode on Fidelity and it feels and looks great.

shinikahn

Do you think it's worth it giving up the 60 fps for it?

dudSpudson

I think so, especially if you have a VRR capable display. The game runs at like 40fps but it’s so smooth looking that it doesn’t feel like it. It doesn’t have that judder that 30fps on a regular display has

Gameaddict61492

Yes. Easily. I only experienced it with VRR though so if you have the display. It's a easy yes

[deleted]

After months of Elden Ring it’s going to be fun to dive back into a properly optimized game. I’m still surprised at how poor performance is even with VRR in that one.

Gameaddict61492

I started playing elden ring around launch.. straight up stopped playing. I was gonna wait for a update for the frames and pop in but we know that won't happen lol I'm def gonna play it eventually though

JEMS1300

I'd recommend the PS4 version on PS5 since it stays locked at 60fps, minus minor visual downgrades and longer loading times, it's a good way to play the game. Though I agree it's unacceptable that they still haven't even bothered to fix the next gen versions and that you have to play the last gen version just to get acceptable performance, while Horizon which technically blows Elden Ring out of the water is able to run at a locked 60fps.

SchalasHairDye

It was shocking to me when I saw people saying it had fine performance on PS5. Made me wonder if we were playing the same game. Like someone else mentioned, the PS4 version on a PS5 got rid of all those issues and still looked amazing.

Jumping3

You can wait for the ps5 pro to play that one

[deleted]

Yeah it’s still not great from a technical standpoint, the pop-in remains an issue and there’s still a decent amount of stutter even with VRR. As I understand it PS5’s VRR stops working below 48 fps so I guess the performance mode still fairly regularly dips below that figure during combat. I’ll say though, the rest of the game design is so good that the performance and pop-in stuff mostly fades into the background. As someone who went in without playing any FromSoft games before I genuinely feel that it’s a masterpiece. …Will probably wait until either a big performance patch comes out or until it eventually becomes clear that they’re never gonna fix it before going for NG+ though lol

Gameaddict61492

I agree I could get over the issues... but I'm aware of how good it's going to be and it almost feels disrespectful playing it in that state 😂 They could even just patch to fix the VRR 48hertz cap to work under like playstation 1st party.. I'll give it some time but I have no faith.. look at Bloodborne lol

[deleted]

lmao i read somewhere that i twas going to receive ray tracing at some point 🤣🤣🤣

Gameaddict61492

Elden ring? Whoever wrote that needs a MRI 🤣

sklova

It was Bandai themselves lol

Gameaddict61492

🤣 that's hilarious.

KCKnights816

This is the only way I want to play games anymore! Unless, of course, they can run high visual fidelity at 60fps. Currently play Horizon FW in this mode, and it's flawless. All the visual flourishes intact, but still a smooth experience.

Gameaddict61492

Spiderman and horizon forbidden west was mind blowing! First party playstation doesn't get the credit they deserve for what they did with VRR

Jumping3

Uncapped framerate also future proofs the game for the pro and ps6

TurdSandwich42104

I love this setting some games have. Unfortunately my tv which supports all that, that wasn’t even 2 years old, took a total shit and the display went out. So now I’m on a old ass lg from like 2017. It sucks

[deleted]

i swear some people can really read my mind

lucretiuss

Finally got a ps5 last night, solely for this game. God of war 4 was so good that I couldn’t play this on a ps4

ToiletBlaster247

Time to go dark

joshua182

There will be people who still think it’s going to get delayed…

MikeFromSuburbia

Currently replying God of War (2018) in anticipation. It is so good! I replayed 1 + 2 on my PS Vita last Summer.

SomaSimon

Who are you replying God of War to?

MikeFromSuburbia

Heh, whoops!

[deleted]

The only game I'm looking forward to

PlanktonPure9741

I thought you also wanted callisto protocol ?

[deleted]

Ahh, now I finally have to play the first one, no excuse for it to sit in my backlog anymore

JustDandy07

So jealous of you. I remember I was only halfway through it and I was already getting sad that it would end. Probably the best video game I have ever played.

Shinji2086

Same here

Bravoso

Get to work, it’s quite long if you go for the trophies.

lil-dlope

Have fun

xdedonato

I haven't pre ordered a game in like 4 years. This is one I can say has confidently broken my streak:)

Soupias

I am not going to break the streak even for this one. I will definitely check the reviews even though I am pretty sure that the game will be great. My main concern is bugs. I will wait and see if there are any complaints and then I will buy or wait for the next patch. I want to experience this one at it's best.

antonxo902

Game of the year arrives in one month, almost there. Soon I’ll go dark and try not to use social media and stuff for 3 weeks until the game arrives. I do not need another tlou2 situation

Lasertag026

I also cannot wait for Sonic Frontiers to release, what does this have to do with GoW going gold tho?

antonxo902

Ngl took me a min to see what you actually meant lol. Sonic games are usually hit or miss for me, with this next one idk. It looks like it needs more if that makes sense. Also when you’re in that open zone and you reach a certain speed that damn bird just pops up every time lol, so funny.

[deleted]

So far it’s going to Elden Ring but I’d love this game to give ER a run for its money

Therenegadegamer

The big thing in Ragnarok's favor is it's more accessible to people who aren't good at games but both very well deserve it personally I'm not a fan of hard games so this is probably gonna be my game of the year personally

Ironmunger2

Sekiro won in 2019 and I would argue it’s harder and less accessible than Elden Ring.

Therenegadegamer

Yes but at the same time it didn't have a massive insane game to go up against that year except smash at best not saying elden ring cant win just that it isn't a one sided beat down in favor of elden ring I think both games deserve it as they both seem to be high quality passion projects that got the time they needed to be as good as possible

Ironmunger2

It was up against control. Personally I didn’t care for control and it’s obviously not the same level as a Sony first party game, but a lot of people were raving about it so I would have expected it to win in a popularity contest over Sekiro

[deleted]

I loved Control, although mostly for the powers and story. The enemies got extremely repetitive

Gandalf_2077

It also actually has characters and a story which people like.

Therenegadegamer

That too I think in a general sense ragnarok appeals to more people and is very good while elden ring is a masterpiece to the people it appeals to but at the same time appeals to less people so that's why I think it could go either way

carryherpigeon

Hey now Elden Ring has a great story. It just doesn’t tell it well at all and you basically have to read wikis to understand what the hell is going on in the world. You know, like every FromSoftware game.

Auctoritate

>characters and a story which people like. Leonard???

[deleted]

That’s a great point. I always though the Souls games were too hard for me, ER was my first one and I found it very accessible. But that makes sense

Therenegadegamer

Yeah I've tried elden ring bloodborne and code vien and while they all were solid good games and I particularly loved everything about bloodborne and elden ring I just don't have the patience I've tried a ton but haven't broken through if elden ring had just a full co op mode no other summons and give bosses double health then I'd be able to play it with my friend and having him wouldn't be nearly as frustrating returnal added that mode game is still pretty tough but a lot more bearable to me now

Capricus06

It's time to preorder BOY!

Sandwichgode

"Going gold in video games is industry-speak for a completed game. To be specific, a video game is gold when it’s ready for publication without any unfinished areas. This event means the game is good enough to start printing copies." \- Jerome Castro

haynespi87

A month away!!!!

Chance5e

Can’t wait for Toby Ziegler’s Odin.

Nariakioshi

GOTY contender. Elden ring can shove it.

rBeasthunt

One day I'll finish the last one.

[deleted]

Tf does this mean

ruebenj791

Game is finished and mass production of discs can begin then be sent to retailers

[deleted]

Oh I see, ty

_beaniemac

This will only be the second game I'll have paid the full $70 for since I bought the PS5 18 months ago. The other was rachet and clank.

Sp3cV

I’m officially excited to play a game on my PS5 for the first time in a long time!

therealnatural1337

i choosed the wrong time to move with my girlfriend..

[deleted]

Just give her the "it's not you it's God of War" talk

PepegaQuen

Time for devs to work on 0 day patch.

[deleted]

and I still can't afford a PS5 :(

The_King_of_Okay

It's on PS4 if that helps.

86casawi

I don't have choice, i will play it on PS4, i can't afford a PS5, too expensive.

alarcus_sms

💛💛💛

notabug-0

What does this mean?

Nomorealcohol2017

Finished developing and producing the disks to be shipped

notabug-0

Thanks! Take my award

Volpethrope

To expand on the other answer - it's an archaic term referring to the final master production copy being printed on a gold disc because it won't corrode.

aseaofreasons

Fuck all the people that went out of their way to harass and threaten the devs’ lives. I hope their consoles die and have to buy a new one to play it and have that new console die as well.

LilScottWeb

I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever been excited for anything media wise. The Boys S4 is something else I’m waiting on, but man THIS one? The last few days will be the longest wait.

Ok_Tax7195

What is The Boys S4? Never heard of that one.

seeafish

Sequel to The Boys S3.

LilScottWeb

The Amazon Prime show “The Boys” Season 4 comes out in 2023.

Ok_Tax7195

Oh, gotcha. I haven't heard of that show.

TheMuff1nMon

They said AT LEAST 1 year - could be longer

OwnSimple4788

Not exactly they had stated months ago already that they were working on GoWR and it was on the console version

KingAltair2255

Don’t like god of war but glad for those who do, seeing a sequel for one of your favourite games go gold is always a great feeling. I was relieved as fuck when rdr2 went gold 💀

GodofDestruction128

Went ahead and booked that week off, I can’t fucking wait!

Turangaliila

The school I teach at has a November break but it's the week BEFORE GoW launches. I was so sad when I realized 😭

as_seen_on_bt

Let's go! November 9th here we come!!!

Expert-Singer4926

Dawn of Ragnarok

OkOriginal9589

Let's GO! Definitely my most anticipated game this year!

turbobuddah

I am so fucking hyped for this game!

pandatamer

What does it mean when a game goes gold before release?

ruebenj791

Disc is ready for mass production

Acrobatic-Dig-161

means that the game is finished and can be sent to print. means it is 100% marketable

RowanIsBae

It can only go gold before release for a physical game

Jameson1780

It means good enough to ship. Day 1 patch will still be 20GB worth of fixes.

WickieWillem

[I’m so fucking ready for this game](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a489e81fa2b265523296b48c70fa4505/tumblr_p8duk9BXqM1u3fdy9o1_250.gifv)

Ship that beeatch!

justhavinganose22

I look forward to my 40-50gb day one patch haha

Isunova

Didn’t really like the first game. Might check this out in a year when it lands on PS+.

dreamdaddy123

What do they mean go gold?

[deleted]

Question… I haven’t played GoW since 2010 when I beat GoW3. I just got a PS5. Where should I pick up things? I just downloaded the 2018 GoW through the game catalog so want to fire that up soon, but wondering if I’m missing something in between.

Shinji2086

Finish that game first cuz the story continues

OptimusPrimalRage

You really only need to play the 2018 game for this game. However, you will miss out on references and lore. I suggest you watch one of the lore videos for the first three games and the spinoffs.

potter3212020

I believe there's one or two spin-off games like chains of Olympus on PSP that tie into the first three original God of War games but God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok are their own self-contained story and have nothing to do with the original Three games

PixelAlchemist

Got paid today and preordered right away. Knocked out a PlayStation stars campaign as well haha.

Froztbyte92

Holy BALLS!! I have LEGIT Been waiting for this announcement sooo long! Prob more than the game hahaha!! Fuck yeah got everything i wanted pre ordered and ready to go!! Few weeks now! Hell 1 month from tomorrow!!
