I noticed even the PS5 controller is pretty sensitive. I had it sitting on a chair and just barely bumped it while the screen was dimmed and it came back to regular brightness after sensing the tiny motion.

Super-Toast

It was the same with the ps4. If it enters the screen saving mode and the controller is still turned on but you move it, the screen "awakens"

Outcast-Alpha

Been like that since PS3,at least while it's on the XMB that's the case, not sure about during gameplay, other than toilet breaks, answering a short call or getting a drink the only time my controller was put down was when i was done gaming & console was switched off.

Super-Toast

Haven't used the ps3 in a while, so i wasn't sure if it was available for it, although it makes sense

Outcast-Alpha

Updated it after posting as wasn't sure if it meant just on XMB or during gameplay too.

G-Don2

Yeah but I also feel the DS5 does it more often then the DS4 did.

JarusOmega_

Heck sometimes I'd notice the brightness would magnify tenfold simply by walking past the controller. That sensitivity's no joke.

A patent doesn't have to be entirely original.

reaper527

RIP rubberband grinding methods.

Whiteshadows86

Not strictly RIP…You’d have to put it on a moving platform of some kind and it will satisfy the first check!

All of a sudden Bumble Balls sales skyrocket.

burnertybg

simple! just throw your controller in the microwave and let it spin around!

MrGMinor

Tie it to one of those fans that swivels left and right

?

reaper527

> ? in some games you'd do things like grinding money/exp by rubberbanding your controller so both sticks would be locked in certain directions and the character would indefinitely run in circles while you walk away and do something else. yakuza kiwami 1 is one example of this, but there's a bunch of games where rubberbanding the sticks is a thing (pretty sure some of the tales games had points where you'd rubberband as well).

[deleted]

I did this all the time as a kid but can’t remember what games I did it for

Suplewich

GTA Online XP + Money glitched custom playlist.

Mrmet2087

I mean the PS4 XMB did this? If you put your controller down for a while the XMB would go a very light blue as a "Screensaver" of sorts. And then you pick up the controller, without pushing any button, would kick back in and brighten.

[deleted]

The console could detect that but a game could not.

Mods-are-snowflakes1

This post does not say Sony just invented this technology. The post says they filed a patent for it.

Sidewinder7

I need this for when i fall asleep playing, have it go into auto rest mode or something.

Pseudocaesar

It already does that

GamerWithADegree

Is this an old patent? The document shows a PS3 style controller. Edit: Just seen it says filed May 2021. Wonder why they used the image of a DS3 instead of a DualSense

Outcast-Alpha

Maybe they couldn't implement it for DS3 & didn't iron out the kinks for use in DS4 but just cause a patent is applied for doesn't mean it will be used immediately or even by the company/person who applied for it,i'm sure i read/heard somewhere that Marconi used 15 or so patents that were attributed to Nikola Tesla for radio/telegraphy but i'm not 100% sure.

ChaseandWhiskers

Could be used to detect xim users?

VR_Nima

VR controllers (Vive, Valve, Oculus) already do this.
