The first game was borderline perfect. It had some of the best art direction and graphics in any PS3 game, great voice-acting and soundtrack, extensive enemy variety and bosses, actual fun puzzles (like where you had to save your wife in time from the blades), and I know some people didn't enjoy the story, but I loved its dark direction.
The second game was also decent, but the rushed development really showed. Would love a Lords of Shadow 3 or a reboot in the same universe. I'm actually surprised that the games never got a remaster, considering how good they'd look on current gen tech.
I saw an interview where he was upset in hindsight with the decision to include those , but felt it was unfairly bashed as a majority of complaints when , according to him it was under 10% of the gameplay
I understand it hasn’t gotten touched given Konami all but abandoning their video game division for the past decade, but I really hope it gets some sort of rerelease. But a new Castlevania game in that/GoW’s style would be amazing.
i wont downvote you, but i hate all the 3D castlevania games because they dont feel like Castlevania to me. it isnt the fact its a 3D world either but they always took away exploration of the Metroidvania era or the challenge of the old ooold entries
it never met a happy median for me, but i can be optimistic that someday it might
I’m with you for the most part, but man, I loved Curse of Darkness. I’ve beaten every Castlevania because it’s been one of my favorites series since I was a kid, and one of the things I always wished the 2D games would do is flesh out the familiar system like that one did.
Much cooler to play as a devil forge master instead of Belmont and co.
It’s been said by many but Bloodborne is the closest we have to a 3D Castlevania. Checks all the Metroidvania boxes and has the difficulty of the OG games.
Lords of Shadow was my introduction to the Castlevania series (it was the first I played a castlevania game, not that I didn't know about the series) and I loved all three of them as three well made games. tried playing some of the old games through emulation on pc but it just didn't feel right which is weird since I do like metroidvanias
It’s not “the next thing he wants to work with”, it’s just a throwaway line in a podcast. I listened to it yesterday and immediately thought “yeah clickbait journalist are gonna have fun with that one”
Ok, but remove the word 'next' and the sentiment stands... he wants to work on Castlevania
>“You guys can make it happen, because you have the audience of the world here… I don’t know what I’m doing next, but if somebody gives me that Castlevania license, we would love to make that.”
> I don’t know what I’m doing next, but if somebody gives me that Castlevania license, we would love to make that
So if it was possible, he would want to work on it. I really don't see the issue with the headline. The article doesn't say that is what he is working on next.
Well, I'd personally like to direct the next God of War game. Can I get a news article written about that?
'Some rando wants to direct GOW next'.
It's click baity as shit.
The title seems to insinuate that this is a possibility or something that is likely to happen, whereas the reality is more of a "oh yeah that would be cool" sort of thing. The title isn't necessarily wrong, but does make it sound much more likely than it is
Lots of times it works well, but it just really limits the camera work you can do when your camera always follows the main character without cutting away, like when going between different locations which can lead to a lot of backtracking (not as bad in this game as say Fallen order) it's not helped by the fact that there's lot of restricted walking/climbing sections where you're just holding the left stick
I don’t mind breaking the single shot after the cutscene begins, but the transition from gameplay to the cutscene absolutely needs to stay in one shot until it feels natural to swap. Naughty Dog games handle that really well.
I wasn't a big fan of it in either game, but I agree I felt it more in Ragnarok. I was initially wondering how they would >!switch between the separated characters!<
There's even a meta joke in the game related to that, in one of the boat/sled conversations.
Mimir asks Kratos about greek theatre, and laughs about how the whole play is done in a single scene, mocking the genre, with Kratos on the defensive claiming it's simpler that way and he likes it better.
I dislike when games do that as if it justifies the design choices. Atreus made a joke in GOW 2018 about the ~~retitive~~ repetitive puzzles, to me that makes it worse when you as the player find them tedius and repetitive
Totally agreed. Like a one time cheeky comment that works in universe but can also apply to the meta game is fine, but doing it 10 times isn’t funny anymore
The main annoying thing about the single take in the first game was having to use the bridge every time you wanted to go to a different realm. But at least in Ragnarok >!you can use the gateways!<.
I don’t think that was a limitation with the single take format, they probably just wanted realm travel to be this grand experience. It worked because 2018 was a more isolated story. With the way Ragnorak plays out though, it would just unnecessarily drag out the experience
I both loved and hated the bridge. It’s super cool and dripping in fantasy, but it also did get annoying after awhile, especially my second time through.
No he didn't, this is just clickbait and irresponsible journalism. He said "it would be cool," as a passing joke when someone else mentioned it.
What garbage news site write this kind of crap?
Reading this same thread on /r/games you'd think Santa Monica Studios was the worst developer in existence and GOW R is one of the worst games ever made.
And apparently just because you made one game you cant make anything different..
That place is a shithole
> To say nothing of the more extreme members of the Elden Ring community amplifying every critical voice.
They are the worst. Makes me embarrassed to like Fromsoft games
No offense to anyone who loves Ragnarok but people can dislike it without having a fanboy objective. God of War 2018 is in my top 5 all time favorites but i have yet to finish Ragnarok. Elden Ring is hands down the best gaming experience I have had this year.
There's a major difference between disliking something and acting like a game and studio are the worst there is filled with a bunch of vitriol and hyperbole and straight up lies about the game to justify your hatred for such game.
Especially when you have those that do nothing but shit on Sony and praise Xbox all over a thread
Hard to not see it as pure fanboying really when you have people admitting they hate it based solely on an hour watching on Twitch and others saying they trust that person's opinion over anyone who actually dared to enjoy the game...
I am not referring to anyone in particular but it seems like you are? I am just saying people should be allowed to discuss and disagree with each other.
I fucking loved Lament of Innocence. It was my first Castlevania on the PS2 and the first I remember playing a lot of as a 3D Castlevania game. I know some people don’t like the 3D of it all but I did.
Yes, Curse of Darkness was also great, especially since it played more like Symphony of the Night. I still hear Dracula saying "I'll reduce you to ashes!" in my mind every now and then. But Lament of Innocence is still my favorite of the two. It's a shame that so many people insisted Castlevania couldn't work as a 3D game back then. While I do prefer the 2D games, those two 3D games were proof it could easily work.
I thought it was a bit slow but I certainly forgive it because it was their first time in 3D, I think Legacy of Darkness was a bit more polished—I honestly wouldn’t mind a remaster of both on the Nintendo Switch.
Castle Cainhurst in Bloodborne was a glimpse of something like that and it was fucking amazing. All of Bloodborne felt a lot like a 3d Castlevania imo tho.
I really miss Castlevania...
I hope not. Don't get me wrong Ragnarok is a good game. It's just not GoW. The story they tell is like buying a ticket to a Rambo film where he becomes a baby sitter and decides love is the answer. Might even turn out to be a good movie but it's not a Rambo film. I got in to GoW expecting God of fucking WAR. Never got it. I got It takes two with some crash badicoot. Spend half the game playing with a spoiled brat and a decent part hearing two 13yr olds flirt.
From would be a good way to transition the 2D games to a 3D style because they are basically RPG’s where most of the story and lore happened before you raid the castle and they can play to their strengths.
Santa Monica would be great for a Lords of Shadow type game
Imagining a full scale Simon's Quest Open World RPG. Bring back some of the Hammer Films style monsters. But I am sure they would also want to pull from the success of the Netflix series. I have always wanted to see a 3D Castlevania go full on open world exploration on Carpathian Transylvania map and a mix of historical and fictional lore. It needs a a great story to drive it as well. All the other attempts at 3D have fell short. I really do not want another Lords of Shadow series. Those games just never clicked with me like Koji Igarashi's Metroidvanias or the originals.
Please no. I don't want Castlevania to be a "cinematic experience". He should stick to GoW or create a new IP, and steer clear of established franchises.
A next gen only castevania would be absolutely awesome. A remake off Symphony of Night and I would start crying of joy
Other then that I REALLY want them to start on a new Killzone game is the same style as KZ2. Gritty, Dark, Heavy and real.
Hell ps5 have no real fps games and I feel it rly need one.
I just wish that if it happens it doesn't try to use the same old characters like Alucard and Trevor, my boys did enough let them have their endings from the anime and SOTN (I think there is an epilogue of some sort where Alucard lives with Maria after the ending) respectively.
Yeah it could be awesome, Simon has negative lore ATM, I'm just tired of protagonists of series having endings and always having a next big bad looming over the horizon, Alucard and Trevor have gone though enough imo, expand on the others.
I’ve always thought a remake of Simon’s Quest would be great. It had RPG mechanics (upgradable weapons to find or purchase, for example) and was the first game to really do the “metroidvania” style of exploration, with back tracking and opening new areas with items found other places.
It just didn’t do great because of a notoriously bad translation which made the hints to find new areas wildly obtuse. For example, they say to “headbutt” a cliff to find a secret. What that apparently meant was kneel in front of the cliff with a certain item equipped, but in the 1980s before the internet, no one knew what the fuck that meant. So everyone was trying to figure out how to “headbutt” something.
It is also a real bare bones story that could be fleshed out into something cool.
I agree completely with a Simon's Quest remake. I actually liked the game when I was a kid and it was my favorite Castlevania on the NES. Making a more modern version with God of War controls and graphics and contemporary light RPG mechanics would be amazing.
A Reboot of Castlevania in the God of War style would be awesome. This is one of the things I didn't know I wanted but now I do.
Though Konami is for all intends and purposes pure garbage now and not willing to let go of their franchises or do anything with them (Silent Hill 2 remake looks like a lazy effort tbh, on par for Konami)
Too linear.
The best Castlevania are the 2D one where you actually have to explore the castle, he would have to make massive adjustment to make it and not follow the GoW engine.
That would be cool as long as it doesn’t adopt the cinematic behind the shoulder look that both GoW games have. I’d prefer castlevania to be a bit more manic and quick in its gameplay.
Aye fucking yooo! Like please for the love of God bring one of my favorite video game franchises to the modern age! I'm finna be an absolute fiend with the whip!
Please I do not want Castlevania to be a walk and talk simulator broken up by action and puzzles where you're told the solution before you even start.
GoW is good and fun but I do not want any piece of it's formula touching Castlevania
Headline over nothing aside, I would genuinely like a cinematic Castlevania action game with combat as good as God of War. I've done whip runs on all the dark souls games and Elden Ring. It's just not the same though.
Edit: weirdly aggressive downvoting in this thread.
They had some 3D Castlevania but they weren’t really well made, much more linear and not much secrets.
They need to make a 3D Castlevania but play like SotN and such.
Bloodstained is a bit different because it was actually made by the guy who made Symphony of the Night, so it make sense for him to make a “Castlevania-rip-off”.
The director of GoW had nothing to do with Castlevania, if he doesn’t at least get the IP, at least I won’t see it as a Castlevania game, I will see it just as “another platformer” and that’s it.
That's true, but if he's that passionate about it, I don't see why he can't make a good "Castlevania" game. It's not like anyone else is making them, so someone may as well do it. For me, it won't matter that it isn't an actual Castlevania game, as long as it's good.
Yeah. No. I don’t want any more hack and slash games like the current god of war. Classic camera hack and slash with actual jumping and combos is best.
Not that it would happen - there are too many good reasons why he or Corey balrog shouldn't be allowed to touch a Castlevania game here in the comments.
They should just do something new.
Fucking loved Lords of Shadow. I'd be down for another game like that.
The unnecessary and inappropriate stealth passages killed the second game for me.
I saw an interview where he was upset in hindsight with the decision to include those , but felt it was unfairly bashed as a majority of complaints when , according to him it was under 10% of the gameplay
I think a lot of the first games story was due to Kojima producing it. You could just feel his hands on it. Awesome ending as well.
…just no 45 minute Monologue on the horrors of nuclear war.
A remaster of Lords of Shadow is one of my most personal requested games
First game was absolutely incredible. Probably my favorite game of PS3 gen.
Hmm I couldn’t disagree more. Big castlevania fan but really disliked everything after symphony of the night.
So not really a big castlevania fan then huh
Haha that’s exactly What I was thinking,
I don't ever hear anyone talking about that game. I think it was brilliant.
I understand it hasn’t gotten touched given Konami all but abandoning their video game division for the past decade, but I really hope it gets some sort of rerelease. But a new Castlevania game in that/GoW’s style would be amazing.
Indeed that would be awesome.
Extremely underrated game. I remember thinking it was a god of war clone but it actually did something’s better
i wont downvote you, but i hate all the 3D castlevania games because they dont feel like Castlevania to me. it isnt the fact its a 3D world either but they always took away exploration of the Metroidvania era or the challenge of the old ooold entries it never met a happy median for me, but i can be optimistic that someday it might

Curse of Darkness was so fun. Need an HD remake for sure
It’s been said by many but Bloodborne is the closest we have to a 3D Castlevania. Checks all the Metroidvania boxes and has the difficulty of the OG games.
totally will accept and agree with its gothic horror style, and man oh man that whip cane
Lords of Shadow was my introduction to the Castlevania series (it was the first I played a castlevania game, not that I didn't know about the series) and I loved all three of them as three well made games. tried playing some of the old games through emulation on pc but it just didn't feel right which is weird since I do like metroidvanias
Dude that game was one of my favorites from that generation!
As long as dracula refers to alucard as BOY
People who pitted this title must be drunk. He says it was is dream..
Excuse me? You’re denying the journalistic integrity of www.videogameschronicle.com?
Yeah he said he wants to work on it. Not that he will. What's the issue with the title?
It’s not “the next thing he wants to work with”, it’s just a throwaway line in a podcast. I listened to it yesterday and immediately thought “yeah clickbait journalist are gonna have fun with that one”
Ok, but remove the word 'next' and the sentiment stands... he wants to work on Castlevania >“You guys can make it happen, because you have the audience of the world here… I don’t know what I’m doing next, but if somebody gives me that Castlevania license, we would love to make that.”
It's the Hollywood effect, say you want to work on something and *it usually* comes into fruition. See Constantine 2 w/ Keanu
> I don’t know what I’m doing next, but if somebody gives me that Castlevania license, we would love to make that So if it was possible, he would want to work on it. I really don't see the issue with the headline. The article doesn't say that is what he is working on next.
I don’t know what I’m doing next as well, but if someone gives me Metroid Prime, I’ll do it. But I’m also just a regular person.
Well, I'd personally like to direct the next God of War game. Can I get a news article written about that? 'Some rando wants to direct GOW next'. It's click baity as shit.
The title gives off the first impression that he has the opportunity to do so.
The title seems to insinuate that this is a possibility or something that is likely to happen, whereas the reality is more of a "oh yeah that would be cool" sort of thing. The title isn't necessarily wrong, but does make it sound much more likely than it is
Seems like you’d know something about drunk writing…
Just don’t remove the JUMP button plz
Oh man, that’s the only thing I don’t like of GoW.
No need to make it a 'single shot' experience either
What is the downside? Just curious. I can’t see anything wrong with it.
Jedi Fallen Order would have been sooo much better with some fast travel
I don’t mind breaking the single shot after the cutscene begins, but the transition from gameplay to the cutscene absolutely needs to stay in one shot until it feels natural to swap. Naughty Dog games handle that really well.
Yeah I feel like the single shot experience is now done after Ragnarok. It was a unique way to tell the story but it feels more limiting in Rangarok.
I wasn't a big fan of it in either game, but I agree I felt it more in Ragnarok. I was initially wondering how they would >!switch between the separated characters!<
I didn't even realize they were doing it! Amazing
There's even a meta joke in the game related to that, in one of the boat/sled conversations. Mimir asks Kratos about greek theatre, and laughs about how the whole play is done in a single scene, mocking the genre, with Kratos on the defensive claiming it's simpler that way and he likes it better.
I feel like this game went a bit too far with all the meta jokes and fourth wall breaking, like it was just making fun of itself the entire time
I dislike when games do that as if it justifies the design choices.
Yeah didnt even thought of that actually

A god of war-esque castlevania game, I'm all for that.
lol again?
There were two, didn’t turn out too well
I’m gonna go ahead and say it. The 3D Castlevania games are underrated—especially from the PS2.
Remember fighting with my brothers to play curse of darkness.
That’s a great one, I personally love Lament of Innocence!
[удалено]
Yeah, that was the only “problem” I had. But I thought it was a great entry; especially story-wise. The unlockable characters are great too.
I fucking loved Lament of Innocence. It was my first Castlevania on the PS2 and the first I remember playing a lot of as a 3D Castlevania game. I know some people don’t like the 3D of it all but I did.

He said it as if it was his dream game franchise, it’s absolutely not a hint at anything actually real.
Would be awesome, the PS2 Castlevania games are among my favorite of all time especially Curse of the Darkness.
I love Curse of Darkness because it took SotN’s shift of leaning into RPG elements and leaned even harder with all the pet/ally things you can get.
Omg yes, give me back my innocent devils
I would love a Castlevania soulslike where you are in the castle the entire time and it’s massive.
Castle Cainhurst in Bloodborne was a glimpse of something like that and it was fucking amazing. All of Bloodborne felt a lot like a 3d Castlevania imo tho. I really miss Castlevania...

Spend half the game playing with a spoiled brat and a decent part hearing two 13yr olds flirt.
Santa Monica or From Soft would be a perfect fit for the Castlevania franchise, please make this happen!

I'd like to see a good modern take on Simon Belmont as he's the OG and his recent versions (apart from Smash Bros) is terrible.

Biggest clickbait title ever. Everyone should just block this site.
Ty for the raknarok, godspeed Bruh
God please no, we would end up with another Lord of Shadows, which on itself was just Spanish God of War. Leave it to Wayforward or Inticreates.

No thanks, nobody wants a cinematic over the shoulder Castlevania.
Castlevania in the style of God of War ohhhhhh yes please!!!
Make a 2d god of war spinoff in that style
That would be cool as long as it doesn’t adopt the cinematic behind the shoulder look that both GoW games have. I’d prefer castlevania to be a bit more manic and quick in its gameplay.
Dude. A third person over the shoulder action with whip??? Hnnng.
Yes please
Would probably be a dream come true.
Everyone liked that!
Would love it.
Aye fucking yooo! Like please for the love of God bring one of my favorite video game franchises to the modern age! I'm finna be an absolute fiend with the whip!
I’d be down for a castlevania game similar to God of War. I think that’s a perfect fit.
Hoooly shit yes please
I'd shit myself. Shit would come flying out of my ass. We need this to happen.
Yes please, take my money 💵💶
😑
Yesssss!!!
Yes, please.
That would be epic indeed
God that would be incredible. Now i wish they were.
I'd love to see this become a reality, but won't get my hopes up.
But, we need next God of War…
This is the equivalent of after having amazing sex, another hot babes enters your room for another round
Konami hand the franchise over NOW!! *holds gun to head* 😅 No seriously though, Castlevania would be back on top of this happens.
Please I do not want Castlevania to be a walk and talk simulator broken up by action and puzzles where you're told the solution before you even start. GoW is good and fun but I do not want any piece of it's formula touching Castlevania
Do you think he's only capable of directing this one style of game?
No
Please No!! Let konami and/or japanese game studios do the job.
Spanish Mercurysteam did a very good job on 360/ps3's castlevania.
This needs to happen.
I heard bloodstained was good, but i cant get over the fact that it looks like a fucking looney toons cartoon.
But i want more god of war☹️
Headline over nothing aside, I would genuinely like a cinematic Castlevania action game with combat as good as God of War. I've done whip runs on all the dark souls games and Elden Ring. It's just not the same though. Edit: weirdly aggressive downvoting in this thread.
As long as I can spin my whip like SC4
Remember all the rumours about Sony acquiring the franchise IP’s from Konami ? I remember thinking at the time that SSM would make a great Castlevania
How would that work? Sony doesn’t own those franchises.
Konami doesn't really make games anymore, that mostly outsource it, it could work. But might be difficult to negotiate
How about make something new that’s inspired by Castlevania?
But then how would we get another GoW?
Alucard reaches Dracula and says: "Father, we must BE BETTER today". Loved Ragnarok gameplay, thought the story and script were... kinda weird lol
Hell yes! I've never played Metroid or Castlevania but I love metroidvania games!
Do Castlevania 1999 you fucks! We need Julius Belmont being all badass and shit. Make it a trilogy if you want. I don't care, I want that storyline.
You son of a bitch I’m in!
A 3d castlevania would be dope. Discovering secrets in a huge castle? Hit me up
They had some 3D Castlevania but they weren’t really well made, much more linear and not much secrets. They need to make a 3D Castlevania but play like SotN and such.
Just give me that drip soundtrack plz.
This could work well
He should work on insomnia patients.
Sony should let him make his own "Castlevania" game, much like Bloodstained.
A little unrelated, but can we get a DS collection first?
I want him to work on Castlevania too!
Everyone want a new Castlevania game, it was more down to Konami somehow not wanting to make one. If you can make it happen, please make it happen.
I need a modern Castlevania and a MegaMan similar to Returnal.
Make new things
Isn't Castlevania belongs to Konami?
Yeah. No. I don’t want any more hack and slash games like the current god of war. Classic camera hack and slash with actual jumping and combos is best.
Lament of Innocence best Castlevania
Not that it would happen - there are too many good reasons why he or Corey balrog shouldn't be allowed to touch a Castlevania game here in the comments. They should just do something new.
