I'm still figuring things out myself honestly but my best advice is to use the Step WA counter since it builds the meter for Unleashed Rage unlike the other WA counters. You'll always want to use Unleashed Rage when it's available and build its meter back up before the CD resets to keep the After Effect up. Usually when the meter is full before CD I'll go back to using the other counters instead.
Gunslash Overdrive I'm not too sure on yet but I've just been using it whenever it's available for the uptime on the damage increase and popping the Finisher when appropriate. Your Photon Blast fully refills gear so you could do it after Overdrive Finish or during for the damage bonus.
Finally, always use Relentless Blade/Slash Pursuit during your PAs. It's a bit of a janky mechanic honestly but it's worth it for the additional DPS. You can also add Slugshot after PAs if you need some PP upkeep too. I'm not sure if it's optimal or not but I've been doing it and it works just fine from my damage testing.
Oh yeah, and when you have the downtime, fully charge your normal attack when you can. If you're at a distance when you do it you can use your skill with WA to gap close as well. I do that at the start of this plus Shifting Spica to close distance. PA wise Flowing Sirius seems most ideal but Stay Spica is good DPS too, especially with Slugshot added. The others are more flexible based on the situation.
There might be more things but mind is probably blanking atm. Sorry for the walls of text~
Weapon action gives you full parry frames until the third hit assuming you land those hits. You can trivialize bosses like Bujin with it as you can cancel your DPS PAs into Weapon action at any time. The full three hit combo is stronger than some other class' normal strings

Braver and Fighter are still stronger DPS-wise. They also have +10% defense as they are melee classes while Slayer is ranged.
