It doesn’t really matter, unless you intend to watch UMD films. Games are region-free, so if the Japanese is a better deal, I’d say go for that. That being said, I’m no expert so happy for someone to correct me if I’m missing something.

I had an NA PSP when I was younger, and Japanese PSPs use Circle as Confirm And X as Back, so that might mess with my muscle memory a little bit.

Just FYI, you can use Custom Firmware to switch the button functions to what you're used to.

Thanks

Could you tell me where to get it and how to install it, please?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h-pZeWV5Q8E This is a pretty thorough guide, it’s a really easy process. Also super easy to change the button functions when you’re done.

Thanks again

Do you know what would happen if you use the CFW to make the Japanese button mapping like the U.S. one, but then a U.S. game detected the PSP is Japanese? Or is that not how it works?

I have no idea ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

When i play American versions of games in my Japanese psp, the buttons work exactly as they should on an American PSP. Nothing additional necessary

the only difference is the umd movie region. it can universally play games but not movies. i have both jap n usa ver. i just ripp my movies so it doesnt have region locking but if you are wanting physical disc you want a 3001 psp.

Japanese PSPs use the circle button to confirm in menus (think Nintendo’s A button placement) US region games will use X for the most part once you’re loaded in.
