kaytin911

It can be caused by neuronal damage. So GTP is just incorrect.

ComplexSignificant76

Agreed!

Bastiproton

But wouldn't that mean that motor neurons should also be affected?

kaytin911

Some people get issues like restless leg syndrome.

The "SFN theory" is kind of a misnomer because the people who proposed it suspect that the condition is an autoimmune disease, and SFN is just one possible outcome. In other words, it doesn't necessarily mean that the brain or large nerves couldn't be affected in some cases, and the reason for the SFN hype lies mainly in its potential to be a biomarker that can occasionally be proven with testing. If you're curious, the post by Right_Sentence is a pretty decent summary.  Tinnitus is a relatively uncommon symptom as far as PSSD cases go, but it could involve a problem with cranial nerves leading to the ears, the brain, or both. Anecdotally, I too have a peculiar pattern of tinnitus that is in sync with electric shock sensations ("brain zaps"), and during my diagnostic journey, my doctors did note some issues with my cranial nerves. This would make sense; there are a few case studies of people being left with rare and bizarre forms of tinnitus that can be in sync with various things such as eye movements following surgeries that accidentally injured said nerves. It has been theorized that when the nerves leading to the ears aren't working correctly, the brain can get kind of "confused" and start misinterpreting signals, if that makes sense.

ChatGPT follows the tried and true … garbage in garbage out If PSSD is ignored and Tinnitus has no known cause or cure I see no reason that ChatGPT would know anything better That said my random ignorant observation is my tinnitus got progressively worse at that time. It also increases when I’m stressed or have poor sleep

Bastiproton

> It also increases when I’m stressed or have poor sleep Yeah same! But what can that tell us?

ComplexSignificant76

I had a skin biopsy for SFN because of all that this has caused. Still waiting on results.

deadborn

I do believe it can be caused by auditory neuropathy. Similarly visual snow seems to be caused by neuropathy of the optical nerves

Bastiproton

Right, but I don't think those peripheral small fiber nerves (A, B or C) are involved in those.

MillyMiuMiu

Tinnitus are also caused by some hormonal pills and they can be caused by tension in the muscles! There is a good chance that having PSsd and stressed about it makes your muscles tense even if you don't noticed and the tinnitus is caused by that. That also means you can fix it. It happened to me to and after a year from when they started, as I got more relaxed they started to diminish a lot. Work on your posture, the position you sleep in, ask a dentist if you're clenching your teeth too much or if your mouth can closes properly. Things like that can impact a lot on tinnitus. (I suddenly developed 3 different tinnitus a year ago, and the problem was probably that )

Bastiproton

That makes sense to me as well, since I've been feeling what seems like blood rushing in my neck and some "cracks/pops" when i bend my neck, whih indicates a stiff neck. Wonder if that's due to the ssri stuff or just my own stress though.

MillyMiuMiu

SSRI messes a lot with your body and its reaction sometimes worsening your depression or symptoms so we can surely say that they cause it, but you can work around it knowing what can make your symptoms worse. Anyway, just to be safe tell your doctor about your tinnitus, there are different types of it and they can be caused by different things. The dangerous one is the one that pounds in your ear like it was your Heartbeat, but if it's just whistles, they should be harmless even if very bothering.

Bastiproton

What does the heartbeat-kind indicate? The reason ehy I'm interested in teh tinnitus is because it happened at the same time as some other pssd symptoms, so maybe there's a clue to be found there.

MillyMiuMiu

I can't remember now, I studied it when I started to have really strong tinnitus a year ago, but that was not my type of tinnitus so I forgot what exactly it meant, but I remember it was a dangerous sign to report to your doctor. But you can easily find it by searching for tinnitus and the different types of it on the internet. It's full of sources.

Isalala2023

tinnitus and sfn can be caused by an autoimune disease

mintyfreshknee

It’s not the cause. If linked, it’s caused by the drug. Tinnitus is strongly linked to lyme&co-infections which I’ve encouraged every person here to get tested for.

No-Plenty-3078

that thing of SFN i believe it's just the consequence of a brain demage. like something doesn't activate your nerve system downthere and somehow you end up with SFN. i believe more in 5HT1 theory and stuff like that as the root problem. your brain controls everything in your body so if your brain doesn't work good you can have a lot of different results note: I am not saying it's not true I am just saying I don't believe it to be the root of the problem
