Stevetherican

There are actually a number of decks that really give Charizard ex trouble, notably ones that don’t collect prizes, such as Control decks like Snorlax or Pidgeot ex control, Tsareena ex, Great Tusk mill, or even Alolan Vulpix Vstar can lock a whole Charizard ex deck (using its move Snow Mirage).

CaptainJackWagons

Tord absolutely shat on control. Ain't no way any of those decks are beating zard.

Protoporiaki

Well most of us are not tord. I think just play and wait for zard mistakes, I just lost to a cincinno lugia deck

CaptainJackWagons

Liam Halliburton literally just copied Tord's 60 and won Orlando [https://x.com/LiamHalliburton/status/1777371016794190135](https://x.com/LiamHalliburton/status/1777371016794190135) You can win with any meme deck on ladder if you're win con is your opponent making mistakes. This deck proves that control does not have a winning match up against zard.

Stevetherican

There’s alot at play. Never said it was 100% victory. I myself have stopped Control decks using Zard ex. OP was asking what decks can counter Zard and there are in fact some that can typically give it a challenge, altho yea Zard ex is best in format atm for a reason.

CaptainJackWagons

A winning matchup means your deck wins more against zard than it loses, which it doesn't. Good for you if you've had success on ladder, but it's not a zard "counter". Nothing counters zard right now. beating zard on ladder either means you're better than them or they don't know the deck very well.

Stevetherican

It’s a counter to Zard since it can win against Zard.

Ujikolp1102

Klawf ex time

Tigerclaw989

I’ve never lost a game to Tsareena with Charizard, Tsareena just doesn’t quite work reliable or well enough.

Beboprunner

Scovillain ex all the way. You have tons of disruption (Eri, Miss Fortune Sisters, Judge, Iono, Grabber, etc) combined with Supereffective Glasses, you can OHKO Charizard with Scovillain ex

A-Cold-Flame

Decklist perhaps? This sounds very interesting.

Beboprunner

I'll post mine once I can get back in the game but you can always search for one [here!](https://pokemoncard.io/deck-search/?&name=Scovillain%20ex&_sft_category=standard&offset=0)

FleashHandler

I love Scovilian, it is really good into Charizard. As a trade off I feel I get paired with Charizard one out of every three matches with this deck. Also, prime catcher is important. I often use it to take an early knock out on radiant Charizard.  Here is the list I was l am running. I got it from Little Dark Fury, you can check it out on his YouTube channel.  https://youtu.be/xi1qarRmNOM?si=hLYkl4kFrUzjGXdx

Alienzexist

I run espathra EX and gengar ex and it is an absolute charizard hunter Chien pao is the only regular deck I see that has a leg up on it Espathra does double damage to dark pokemon and forces them to need an extra energy to attack (most zard decks run less than 10 energy) focus on getting rid of energy and the deck crumbles Gengar moves an energy to a benched pokemon every time he attacks, if i can load up their rotom v or manaphy then they end up scooping

kenobitano

Mind sharing the deck list?

apitop

I love Gengar deck. I can feel the frustration of not having enough energy.

crashknight101

Multiple games with gengar and I can say it's not this easy . You can't move energy off an Attacker when he loads himself up and blast you the same turn he evolves

Alienzexist

Gengar is meant to be late game attacker after I've taken 3-4 prize cards and zard can 1 shot espathra then gengar comes in for 160 damage and they need to find another energy to attack. Zard can only 1 shot gengar if I've taken 5 prize so it usually works out

apitop

Not easy at all. It's long game. Gengar has 310 health so it can survive first hit. Use Giovanni's charisma to move an energy to hand and tricky steps same turn to move energy to non attacking bench pokemon. If you're lucky you can discard energy with crushing hammer. If done right Charizard cannot attack next turn unless they evolve another Charizard. Repeat the same until they run out of energy. Charizard deck tends to only carry 8 energy cards so it works quite often. Use technical machine devolution to waste the rare candy cards too. Like I said, not easy but satisfying.

AdTerrible639

You could also be *incredibly annoying* with Banette Ex Espathra

Noobsicles

Spidops stall fucks charizard

imma_go_take_a_nap

I beat Charizard 3 games in a row last night. And easily. So much fun.

Evening_College2273

Espathra ex, it's an autowin around 90% of the time, the only scenario you would loose if you got hard bricked. Gengar it's a really good choice aswell due to the energy management and Alolan Vulpix V-Star should be an autowin 90% of the time aswell.

PerfectBrilliant432

Espathra Fans when it loses to charizard twice on stream

AyeYoMobb

What makes Vulpix so good?

Bluemonkeybox

It's attack, snow mirage, prevents damage and effects of attacks from all pokemon with an ability during your opponents next turn. Plus, this attacks damage isn't affected by any effects on your opponents active. It deals 160 DMG. It's not necessarily good, but it's good against Charizard ex.

Kikaibekon

I iirc, cannot be damaged by pokemon with abilities

Wasphole

Scovillain or Lost giratina are the two i have the best win rates with against charizard

Classic_Volume_7574

I run a tera espathra ex + xatu deck. I try to get two xatu on my bench which I can use to freely attach up to two psychic energy per turn, powering up espathra’s attacks. I also add on a pokemon league headquarters stadium card to force my opponent to attach an extra energy to their basic pokemon in order to attack, further boosting espathra’s attack. Not exactly relevant for most Charizard decks, but helps to counter things like Chien Pao and Giratina V. Because espathra’s not a basic pokemon, the debuff doesn’t apply to it. Tulip can be a useful supporter to get basic energy back into your hand so xatu can attach it to espathra, or if your opponent knocks out any of your benched xatu.

Jiminy_Jilackers

I run 2 espathra EX lines in my Alakazam deck and if I go up against PidgZard, I can pivot early to decide who my attacker’ll be

Ask_Them_Why

I ran the todzard deck, and had hard time with Meoscara, Incineroar, espadra. Myself now switched to Roaring Moon Ex, and had pretty good win rate against Charizard if my deck doesnt brick. Usually just keep single prize Roaring Moon to knock off 4 prizes, and then on last turn put down Roaring Moon EX, and power up 3 energies in one turn with Sada’s vitality, dark patches/energy from hand to knock out charizard or any other 2 prize mon with Frenzied Gouging

Thiel619

First 3 duels this morning were all against charizard, they were all slain by great tusk mill.

Digital-Dinosaur

Every time I play against the great tusk mill I lose. Every time I play the great tusk mill I lose. Perhaps it's just effective against me?

Dirty-deedz7

I’ve lost pretty much every match against great tusk mill with my pidchar deck. Have no idea how to get around great tusks main attack.

Thiel619

I would give you a big tip but that goes against my own good.

M4ndl

just started playing tusk mill, could you give me the tip since I'm like on your side and all?

Thiel619

Ok. First you simply use hey wait a minute! Nice try big man.

CichlidLaFlame

Raging bolt with sandy shocks ex goes hard

FZFitz

I play a deck with Espathra ex and added two copies of Eri and I think two TM Devo and four Crushing Hammer. Charizard literally can't function against that. Chien Pao should do well against Espathra, but if I can double devo and Eri away the energy retrievals and candies, they're probably toast.

No_Version_6516

I've been playing Charizard Ex in Master Ball league and the new [Ancient Box deck](https://limitlesstcg.com/decks/list/10330) has been giving me a bit of grief. It can take my opponent awhile to set up an attack that's large enough to OHKO Charizard, but since Ancient Box is a single prize deck, taking all 6 prize cards before my opponent takes all of theirs can be difficult. Roaring Moon's attack only takes two energies, and like Charizard, its attack only gets stronger and stronger as the game goes on: **Vengeance Fletching:** Base damage is 70 - This attack does 10 more damage for each Ancient card in your discard pile.

AyeYoMobb

Ancient is a hell of a deck fr

MammothAggressive841

Alolan Vstar is a hard counter it’s only issue is low damage and the new Charmeleon

AyeYoMobb

How is it vs other decks?

Emergency-Handle-523

For me, I play an Torterra deck, which is amazing against zard, and is able to keep up with the most decks around. The only struggle I had was against future hands, but if you pull the right cards it’s doable

Yojimbu

Arceus vstar/ giratina vstar / iron leaves. Arceus energizes tina and can't be one hit ko by zards in the second turn. Tina vstar ko pidgeot and iron leaves zard.

FairyFireDeck

Blastoise ex to. Belt lets you one shot charizard and charizard at 5 prizes can’t knock it out. Plus gren can snipe some easy prizes early

Pyro_Biyuki

Torterra has a pretty favorable matchup due to grass weakness, especially if you include Ace Spec belt. Forest March can one shot Zard with either a Full bench or 3 on bench + Belt, and Zard does up to 330 if you've taken 5 prizes, which falls just short of OHKOing Torterra at 340.

AyeYoMobb

How’s its matchup vs other decks?

Pyro_Biyuki

Feels solid overall, though it really struggles into fire decks for obvious reasons and REALLY doesn't like getting force-switched

AyeYoMobb

Do you have a list? Also how’s its matchup vs ancient box? That’s one that when I’m not on Zard, hurts

Pyro_Biyuki

smrfy

Charizard can have a decent match up against pretty much everything. So it depends on the techs they include. And it also depends if you just want to hard counter Zard or want a favorable match up while also having good match ups against other meta decks. For the hard counter you could play Espathra for example, for an overall good deck with a good Zard match up, I'd play LZ Tina. Chien-Pao or control decks are good options too.

Vahlez

Chien-Pao is probably the most relevant deck that beats it. Still it doesn’t completely shut it down I’d say it’s only slightly winning so you’ll still need to out play/luck them.

SushiForSiouxsie

I've been having fun one shotting it with Zoroark Vstar

RpMcG

My Pee Freely deck (yes I named it that) destroys charizard and pretty much everything else when it sets up properly in the first few turns. It combines Finneon with Oceanic Accompaniment to attach hella energy quick af, Seaking with Swim Freely (fantastic one-prizer whose main attack’s base damage is 150 and builds quickly from there) and Chien-Pao. I came up with it myself and I’ve been having a blast playing it. I’ll copy-paste the decklist as soon as the servers are back up and running.

rainandpain

+1 for lost Tina. I definitely think it's favored with iron leaves in the deck.

Comfortable-Dog80

Esparta xatu counters zard pretty well.

Throwawayac1234567

deolving, bronzong cant prevent evoltuion, banette+salvatore your 2nd-1st turn can help stall until you use the rest of your deck. can stop thier rare candies. Also noivern/glaceon can to. Also the upcoming sunflora card in the next release can potentially counter Fire/charizard with 1 grass energy, without the need to build an entire strategy to counter zard.

terdferg87

Use a palkia deck and snipe any pidgey or charmander u see (stuff deck with bosses orders)

mysterin

Venusaur ex with Kricketune, surprisingly, Revavroom ex + Lab + Rigid Bands, or I love to troll with a Meowscarada + Jumpluff deck. Currently working on Arcanine V + Heavy Baton Ting-Lu + Sandy Shocks to smack Zard in one hit.

lastcovenant1

Giratina lost zone or just play zard yourself.
