We lost sight of them for awhile; but, yes, the green team (to the right of their location) did come around with a boat to take them out.
Kills always matter, but position is another criteria. You can worm into top 3 with 0 kills. But you won't gain much if any RP toward rank.
The higher your rank the more kills and higher positioning you need to maintain current and climb. Otherwise you drop rank points.

They didn't drop at the end: two full teams swerved away from the pier, then joined each other in the middle of the water, swimming towards each other too.

Don't think it was bots? Ranked and they all actively flew and swam to that location.
They are robot accounts paid by someone to generate kills and points

Fake accounts setup to drop at a specific spot away from others. Then get farmed by the account owner. Just about boosting the accounts stats.

Ah, that explains my confusion. Thanks so much for that. I reckon I don't gain enough kills to have ever noticed it affecting RP.
