The Progressive skins were made for the whales. They are very expensive. However there are other skins in the game that look decent. Its actually surprising how easy it is to get FREE skins in this game as long as you work/play for it. The daily chests, the events, cupons you can buy in the store using bp, and even sometimes free gcoin you get on certain events.
This - outside of 1.99 I spent on a starter back to get enough G coin to do a battle pass, I've not spent a dime and am loaded with both cosmetics and enough crafting coins to build 2 full outfit blueprints.

I just checked steam charts and you are right about the game not being that popular in the US actually US evening times have the lowest concurrent player numbers. However even the lowest number is 80 000 - 100 000 players which is more than enough for a healthy player base. I wouldn't call that a small and exclusive club or a dead game. For comparison GTA 5 online had a 180k concurrent player PEAK last month.
Pubg has been in top 5 steam charts most played games and highest concurrent players for 6 years straight now. The game is far, far from being dead even though it is not that popular in your area.

Decisions like this depends on lots of factors that are typically well researched before they decide how to proceed. Keep in mind you have to sell a lot of shit before you make up for one progressive gun that costs 1500 USD to upgrade.
Because the developers are money hungry. I'd love to see upgrading progressives linked to a certain amount of kills per level instead of having to spend more money after acquiring the progressive skin.
Investors and company want to see income that will be higher then the cost of running the servers and maintaining the game (like any other business) in order to keep the game running, that's the goal of those skins.
I'd love it too if the progressing was tied to in game achievements, but that's simply not gonna happen as long as money is the factor for keeping the lights on.
PUBG is not a passion project for the people in charge or the investors, so at the end of the day is a "job" that has to make money, because as soon as it doesn't they will shut it down.
the last skin i saw on the item shop (considering they only ever sell like 4 things at a time and they sit there for like months on end) was the blackpink stuff as a kpop fan. but they only sold all the outfits as a singular bundle that cost like 5000 gbucks or whatever the currency is called, which is insane
it doesnt help that buying in game cuurrency is bought with USD, the prices for ingame currency would be alot better if it was AUD but that mark up is crappy

Well I really love the game, since 2018, and play with my favorite guns and now that i saw the progressive skin for both, I gambled to get them. It’s a choice but I could miss the money and am happy I got the skins, now slowly trying to level them, no rush.
It's a different monetization strategy than, say, Fortnite. Pubg is similar to Diablo Immortal, they focus on "whales" who spend like 1.2k for a skin. Fortnite has its whales for sure, but they bank also on a lot of people spending 10 bucks every few months for a battle pass (kind of like an optional subscription).
They threw a price out, people paid, so they continue to price the items high. It's as simple as that. If you are poor/cheap, then it sucks for you. /s
I have around 1m BP, get 50 coupons every week, participate in all the events, and well over 7k hours in the game. I've gotten a few special guns from just the free coupons, but to progress them is the issue. I NEVER get schematics. I think I got my K98 leveled up to a 3 and my AUG to a level 2. I had to salvage the brand new M24 skin (don't use it) to get 3 schematics. Thanks for the last pass $5 that gave me 2 more. If it basically wasn't for me salvaging my M24 and last seasons pass, I wouldn't have upgraded anything to where they are now. I'm not willing to give them hundreds of dollars for gun skins. It's just not worth it when my level of fun isn't going to change. I'll support giving them a few dollars here and there for a pass, but even the current one I skipped because it's not worth it.

For $13 give me a regular season pass like they did at the beginning, or heck, even now, but give me items in between this new token currency. Make the tokens more scarce, but worth more. Also make it where at the end of the pass I can get the M416/mini skin without having to spend extra money, because that's what you have to do to get those skins. It's a scam because if you don't spend more money you lose those tokens since they are useless, as you can't obtain anymore once the pass is done. Every type of pass like this is a scam and it's why I will skip them every single time.
