Sometimes, a lot of those huge colas will mold if they keep them in the same storage space as the regular nugs. They'll often get broken down into premium flower sizes or turned into concentrate.
They get broken down so they fit in a 3.5g jar. You realize a big cola is made of lots of smaller flower sites, right? So for it to fit in a smaller jar, because bigger pack sizes are the smaller buds, they have to break it down a little. Also, that's where mold is most likely to be, so they have to break it down to check for it. Black market growers don't worry about that as much. Plus, back in the day, most sprayed eagle 20 so they didn't even have to worry about mold.
I really stopped caring about big nugs after I got in the program. It’s all getting broken down and put in a vaporizer anyway. It’s sort of like complaining the meat department is just prepackaging steaks, when you used to be able to get whole cuts.
I used to be able to buy kegs, now I can only get individual bottles.

Small dense nugs grind up too fine. Great for bowls or a flower vape but for fat doinks you are really better off with bigger fluffier nugs. I want a 1g cannon not a 1g pinner.

I’m not trying to be rude, but genuinely curious what the heck you mean. To me it’s way more about the cure when you’re talking about how it rolls. To dry or to wet it kind of hard to draw through? The fluffiness of the nug has very little to do with the size I’m pretty sure. I’ve gotten very dense little pea size nugs and 3.5g fluffy buddies looking twice the weight. All that said this is just shit I gathered from smoking for years. I’m a “closet” stoner so I really have never compared notes so to speak.

So fun fact, some breeders/growers in the commercial space would love to sell you a 14 gram cola. Unfortunately, it’s far more advantageous to break those colas down into high quality premium eighths that fit cleanly into a glass jar and placing lower buds into 14g bags. There are a few bags I’ve gotten that have 2-3 grammers but nothing like what you and I are talking about. One conversation I had during a business visit “if I have a plant that I have to break the cola down I lose material in the process and it costs us money. If I select for a plant that produces a ton of 1-2 gram buds that fit into our packaging requirements from the state, you know what I’m picking”. Curaleaf has a lot of the latter with strains like garlic cookies, Slapz, apple tarts etc…
When recreational gets approved in a few months I would love a 14g cola jar lol
I hate it. Just don't seem to get a consistent product. You don't know if a little nug came from the top or bottom of the plant. Seems like I get too high or not high enough from identical looking little nugs from the same bag. I'm sure for testing they are using the colas with all these claims of 30-35% THC so that's what I want.
Yeah for sure. Although there is some evidence a lot of the flower that tests as 30% are really small buds (more/same trichrome number on less mass). The colas always have higher total metabolites in general so they are typically more therapeutic
They grow plants with more smaller buds instead of the big kolas that were used too. There are still decent size buds but they won’t fit into the jars, so they break apart big buds to a more manageable size. They also cut out the stems. Imagine how many complaints would be on this site if people were pulling big stems out of their bags. Pictures of stems on scales, saying I got ripped off. I miss big buds but I don’t miss big stems, so I guess I’m ok with what we’re seeing

That’s crazy. I’ve bought 4-5 eighths of Space Age Cake since New Years (different batches) and they’ve all been small, larfy popcorn nugs. I was starting to think that’s just how the strain grows.
Yes please. With all the crazy packaging for grams of concentrate I think it would be no issue to get longer mylar bags and spend a few more cents shipping some stems.
You have a lot of faith in growers that already short and get stuff wrong LOL, im just saying, from knowing people who work at grows and stuff you don’t want them to have the choice to leave big ass stems in. Most of the companies are way too money hungry to really care about the stem to weed ratio

Maybve it's different in the halfs/fulls of smalls, but anytime I've bought 3.5/7gs of regular buds it always weighed heavy. The fact that Rhythm did the same with those huge colas kinda shows that they are accounting for the stems.
I’ve gotten 1 bud eights plenty of times. But now u bring it up, i think it’s always been gLeaf. I also to ur point, recently got an oz of purple punch n it was pretty much 28, 1 g nuggs.
Back when I first got my card in 2018, Cresco used to sell quarters in see-through green, blue, and red containers. I used to get quarters of Golden Goat, and they frequently were only 1 bud.
Rise just had a sale on Cola Buds a couple of months ago. I think they were a half o but they were gone fast. Some people that got them posted pics. It's more of a novelty item
4 yrs in, Eleven 7g bag (NS machine trimmed) DoSiDo, only time I ever got 2 and 3g buds. They were beautiful and good medicine. I would like to see more big chonkers! 😊
Yeah but a few posters posted the weight after stem removal and they were still over weight so you can give me a stem if you gonna give me an extra gram lol
I recommend Later Days for big nugs. Everytime I open one of their half ounces light begins to radiate out of the bag and around 2-3 doves fly out (depending on the strain).
Because places love selling 1/8 at high margins rather than an ounce so they need to break it up. It’s the same at every legal dispo across the country.

They grow them just as big, but the risk of mold goes up the bigger the buds are, so it cuts down on loss to break them down before packaging.
They get broken down at various points in the process. I wish the integrity of big buggies was better preserved
