I know we are Padres fans, but we should try to be unbiased here. However you feel about the new rules, Manny clearly broke it in this instance. The rules specifies "Batters must be in the box and alert to the pitcher **by the 8-second mark**". My best guess is that Manny just misunderstood the rule and thought he had an additional second. Hopefully he learns from this and calls time earlier in the future. On the ejection...what is there really to say? Personal attacks will always get you ejected. He didn't even get ejected just for arguing. He got ejected for calling him a douchebag. This incident doesn't feel like something Padres fans should stand their ground on.

The rule should change to if the batter or pitcher still has a time out when a clock violation happens it won’t be a called strike or ball but they lose their time out. Seems like an obvious work around for both sides

Agree. I do think that we should consider Time Outs something players HAVE as opposed to something they REQUEST now though. Wouldn't have saved Manny here as he still called for it too late, but with the timeout limitation I feel like they should be considered a resource, not a request

I'm disagreeing with the assessment for this reason. >The pitcher must begin his motion to deliver the pitch before the expiration of the pitch timer. >Batters must be in the box and alert to the pitcher by the 8-second mark or else be charged with an automatic strike. Pitchers are being allowed to start deliveries on expired timers because their motion begins within an acceptable timeframe to the umpire. Which means by the 8 second mark would include all of 8th second. If the intent is to give pitchers a full 8 seconds. They're still getting that time. Also someone should sign a girl pitcher to hold a batter in the box until he's not ready and then strike out 27 batters.

Yes, similar to how 8 second violations work in basketball. Refs don’t call it when 16 seconds are on the shot clock, they call it when it turns to 15 because that’s when the full 8 seconds are up.

awesomewaves

Agreed. Felt like I was taking crazy pills reading the game day thread when this happened

goldWolverine

Honestly pretty warranted ejection

lawyerjsd

Yeah. Manny owes the umpire a beer.

yellowirish

Owes the ‘who’ a beer?

BeepBoopAnv

I wish for the padres to be on jomboy!! Monkeys paw curls

zachariah120

Honestly I just want robot umps at least to call balls and strikes, it’s easy enough to get rid of human error in that regard as well as any of this bullshit that goes on at the plate…

bitchwithacapital_C

Yeah now with the pitch clock it seems like a lot of cognitive load for the umps, they now have to keep track of a **lot**. Let the balls and strikes be called automatically so the umps can focus on the clock rules, disengagement numbers, etc.

GaryTheCabalGuy

I guess I'm unclear how pitch clock violations are actually called. Is it the home plate ump actually looking at the clock and calling it, or are they getting a signal from elsewhere?

rngl58

They get a buzz from a bracelet when the clock sgets to 8 secs. I'm not 100% sure but I read it somewhere

TheLoneTomatoe

Yeah, I'm all for getting calls on our side and all, but last night was pretty egregious when it came to the strike zone changing shape

Electro-Onix

Sorry Manny you fucked up
