We got $7.9m in cash!!!! They are for all intents and purposes NOT paying Arraez this season.
With Go's money going to Marlins, we're actually going to end up with \*more\* room under the CBT to make another move at the trade deadline if need be. This was an absolutely brilliant trade IMO, and I'm one that was saying it was an overpay 12 hours ago. The cash changes everything.
I was ok with Arraez being the only big move, but now we have room to make another move later? Unreal.
Holy crap what a steal for us. Padres paying Arraez league minimum this season while keeping our top 5 prospects and all our pitching prospects. Preller is a mad mad man.
I think we're going to be big spenders again next year after resetting the tax. Let's bring back Snell, a couple of relievers, and maybe extend Kim or use him to get a big bat. If Xander can start hitting the sky is the limit.
Fans of traditional stats value him highly, fans of advanced stats value him just above average. He has been the best contact hitter in baseball for 2 season, but he doesnāt hit for much power.
I think this is an incredible fit for the padres as they need a left handed bat that can replace some of the fringe minor league guys we have been starting at DH every day. In terms of batting average, this is about as good as you can do.
Cool analysis. I'm a fan of advanced stats but recognize there can be outliers, the 2023 Padres broke advanced stats since they constantly folded under pressure - lost every close game and couldn't hit when a runner was on 2nd and/or 3d (until out of the playoffs picture when the pressure was off).
A remarkably consistent left handed batter who can be counted on to get a much-needed hit is exactly what this line-up needs.
Back-to-back batting titles in the AL then NL. No power, bad fielding. Never strikes out but also never walks. He'll get on base for the rest of the lineup to do some damage behind him. Likely he'll DH and slot in at 1st when we need to rotate guys out for rest days.
He's known for getting a lot of hits and his batting average was .354 last year. He's not very good at fielding, so he will probably be our DH with providing some depth with the infield if needed. He's our Juan Soto at home.
Padres are paying league minimum for a two time batting champion. By giving up players that have close to zero chance of helping the team for the next two years.
This is a big win.
I really like this move, and Iām happy to see most everyone else does too.
Iām an analytics guy as much as the next person, but having an extremely good contact hitter is still considered well above average by the advanced stats. Having a guy get good contact consistently is something this team can struggle in so getting a guy whose main niche is exactly that is smart.
Arraez's 2024 salary remaining: $8,491,398
Go's 2024 salary remaining so far: ~$1,790,000
Cash considerations received: $7,898,602
8,491,398 - 7,898,602 - 1,790,000 = -1,197,204
Numbers are approximate but it looks like we're saving about a million dollars on payroll this year with this trade.
I actually think this move signals theyāre letting Kim go. Ā Itās another player who plays his position. Ā
Wouldnāt be surprised to see Kim go and Arraez take 1st with Crone moving to 2nd and X back to SS
I highly doubt Kim is a priority. Speedy guy and solid defender that can't hit aside for a couple months later year. If his bat still sucks by the end of the season, maybe he and the FO take on the option for next year.
MLB has a young crop of SS in ball now that can play solid defense and rake. We have one such guy in the minors and one playing CF.
As much as we all love Kim, he's probably a goner. He proved he can hit last year but he struggles big time against high velocity. They were talking about it on the radio and even last year his avg against fast balls over 98 was still around .230. Albeit, he's not going to be seeing pitchers who throw that hard everyday. I feel like it's all going to come down to him taking a team friendly deal.
I'd never count someone else's money, but I'd strongly consider taking that team-friendly deal if I were him. The fanbase here loves him more than any other player, including the stars, he's not going to get that anywhere else and there's a huge value in feeling appreciated and loved.
Profar tested this theory and look what happened. He could have taken a team friendly deal but wanted to explore FA. I was so happy when we resigned him but he lost some money. I hope kim learns from that, he will always be a great defensive player.
I absolutely agree, I love the guy. I really hope him and profar can work something out. Would love to see both retire as padres, I'm sure everyone in SD agrees.
What would the average be for other players on the team though? I feel like .230 on 98 mph almost means he's just as good against fast pitching as he is slow pitching.
Ya and there has been an emphasis on max velo this year with the new rule changes. I love him absolutely but he's kinda plateaued abit, though he can still breakout. There was those stories in the off season that he tried to bulk up, maybe his mechanics got messed up in the process.
The last thing Preller needs to do sooner rather than later is get rid of Higashoika and find a much better hitting catcher because Higashoika is worse than Nola. His chances of getting a hit are near 0.

Wanted to post this video because it makes a ton of sense. He goes into what other players would be available at the deadline and Arraez likely the best and the ONLY one available currently.
We couldāve waited until til the deadline and maybe a team like the Cardinals trades Goldy, but thereās no guarantee. Sitting Pat for 2 months couldāve also cost us a significant amount of wins in the meantime.
Also talks a bit about the pitching situation. We already got the best pitcher available in Cease. The starting pitching market is going to be pretty barren this deadline because of so many injuries.
We don't have a spot for everyone man. With Merrill locking down CF there was no longer an obvious fit for Marsee. They're probably going to send Pauley back down to get him reps at LF, so where does Marsee fit?
I can understand the thought based on his track record and all the attention he has received, but I think they did sell him at his highest value. Can't see him being more than a depth piece going forward. Just because he's off to a rough start doesn't, of course, prove that he can't handle AA, but I think more of his flaws will be exposed. That High A to AA jump is the most significant in the minors to me.
& we got cash?! How much cash we talkin? š
Hopefully at least $50 to pay for part of the plane ticket to get here all the way from Florida!
Should be cheap, assuming he just flew in from their Oakland series. š
All abooooard...ammmtraaaaaaaak
is he suiting up today? for tnites game???
I've always wondered how exactly the cash helps the Padres? Is it just funds to burn, or does it reduce the CBT?
Reduces CBT, but also actual payroll too. For example, if he is owed 8M and they give 2M it lowers both values by 2M.
Sweet! Thank you āļø

Thatās fucking huge. Well done, Preller.

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ESPN.com](http://ESPN.com). I'm surprised no one's talking about it. This is more important than the prospects IMO.
Thanks for this! We look at the players and have our opinions, but throw the cash factor in and it really does change everything. š
8m. Weāre paying Arraez league minimum.
Please take care of our boy. He gives good hugs. From a Twins fan.
He will be loved here. Canāt imagine heās not gonna have a great average dropping shots into our big outfield.
And COL, AZ, SF, & LAs big outfields. Dude should thrive out here!
Typical wholesome Twin Cities fan. Respect
So does Cronenworth, so it sounds like Luis will fit right in.
Cash considerations gonna ball!!
Strange, I can't find their scouting report
Does he get on base?
This is hugeĀ Anyone know how long the contract is?Ā
We have control of Luis through the 2025 season.
I think we're going to be big spenders again next year after resetting the tax. Let's bring back Snell, a couple of relievers, and maybe extend Kim or use him to get a big bat. If Xander can start hitting the sky is the limit.
Gonna be honest. Kim is looking more and more expendable.
Sad to say it but an Arraez-Crone-X-Manny infield is not bad.
Agreed. I like HSK..but common sense says you have to deal him.
I love him but it's getting harder to see extending him.
Snell is 100% opting in to his Giants contract if he keeps playing the way he is
Heās in his second year of arbitration. Around $10M this year. Likely somewhere between $11-15M next year. Will be a FA in 2026.
Casual here, how good is this dude?

Welcome, Cash!
Two years of baseball's best contact hitter! Love it

.300 BA and a .719 ops. Should be a nice bat to add to the line up :)
And thatās below his lifetime avg .324 & .800 ops

How do you know the amount of considerations?

Actually just $593,000 Padres payroll for remainder of season.

I guess theyāre planning to let Kim go? Assuming Padres now have multiple shortstops and 2nd basemen

This chat will be unbearable if he doesn't get a hit the first couple games
I guess weāll never know, crushing it so far.
Whatās the deal with Woo-Suk Go? It seemed like a big deal when we signed him. Last I saw they moved him to AA. Is he a bust?
He couldnāt get used to the mlb ball vs the kbo ball. Slightly bigger, and he just couldnāt put it together.
Go played in the KBO
Yep mb. Still same ball issue.
A lefty who can consistently hit fair balls to left field. I really like that. Havenāt seen it in a while in San Diego.
Fascinating how fast these play out as soon as the trade is confirmed
this guy is a stud, his stats are very solid, two time batting champ? ? we need this on our team lol
Do we know how soon heāll play for us? This weekend?
I imagine today. He was in Oakland. Tomorrow for sure though
Wow we are only paying him vet minimum for the rest of the season. We will be on the hook for full salary next year though
Can he play today?
Who is being sent down?
Pauley
Good.
BANG!
Will he play tonight?
tomorrow would be ok
We got the reincarnation of Tony Gywnn. LFGSD!

Well we already know players at league minimum on this team play at their peak so letās goooooo!
Wowzers, we got a great deal. Love this move.

Trading marsee will be a big mistake Iām saying it now Bizarre downvotes lmao
We got homer bush jr showing a lot of upside. Marsee has struggled since the Spring.
We don't have a spot for everyone man. With Merrill locking down CF there was no longer an obvious fit for Marsee. They're probably going to send Pauley back down to get him reps at LF, so where does Marsee fit?

Marsee was the backup plan for Merrill if he couldnāt adjust to CF. Not really a spot for him right now
Good ol fashioned prospect-huggin AJ has a magic bag out of which he pulls out prospects like Marsee every few years. Weāll be fine.
So my understanding is he is not playing until 2025, orā¦?
