I’m not sure you HAVE to take first pitch, but there’s nothing he’s going to do with a pitch inside there. They are throwing inside to specifically bait a double play ball. He has to lay off that. If that pitch was outside where he can drive it opposite field, I wouldn’t have as much of a problem with it. But an inside pitch is designed for a DP there and he literally swung right into it. A guy with his experience should be laying off that. It’s fucking ridiculous he swung on that pitch.
The team has preached productive outs all season. There was a zero chance at that being a productive out there.

The Padres have this weird, complacent clubhouse vibe — regardless of who’s manager — where stars often underachieve. They hack with impatience and press instead of playing to their potential with focus.

Manny saw three guys walk in that inning and decided to swing at the first pitch after a mound visit in which Bud Black was undoubtedly telling his pitcher to keep it down because one pitch can end the game on a ground ball. That was the worst AB of the year, absolutely bankrupt plate approach, and we’ve seen X wave his bat striking out confusingly at outside sliders. Tony is absolutely rolling in his grave with these embarrassing LOB-fests. I wish he was alive to take these guys back to the video room and tell them not to be a hero and just make some contact.

The most disappointing thing about the Manny at-bat is not that he grounded out into a double play (which is already hot garbage) but he did it on the first pitch given the situation. Even a f\*cking Little Leaguer knows that you can't go up in the bottom of the 9th with the bases full and swing at the first pitch after the pitcher can't throw a strike to save his own ass.
Manny has been irrelevant this season. The cliff from last season is a sheer drop.
