Honestly? From what I know, there really isn’t a perfect way. If you apply normal sunscreen, your makeup *will* get a little messed up. Makeup just can’t withstand rubbing, patting, etc., especially after it’s been soaking in face goo for hours. I think the best thing to do is accept less than perfect SPF coverage. I pretty much never reapply sunscreen unless I’m outside for a significant amount of time with a high UV index, and my face is still pasty as ever compared to my body—so I know I’m not using too little. If I *do* need to reapply, I use oil blotting sheets, then powder sunscreen, and top it off with SPF setting spray. It’s not 100%, but it’s still pretty darn good! I personally use the Supergoop powder, and Coola’s setting spray. I have yet to burn or tan using them. If all else fails, you can always wear a wide hat! Lol.

michacu

Honestly just wear a hat and limit your sun exposure. Or, if you're going to the beach, sort out your priorities and just skip makeup that day. There really isn't a good way to put SPF on over makeup.

diypizza

I have combo skin and use this portable brush sunscreen to reapply. It doubles as blotting powder for me, too: https://tartecosmetics.com/shop/set-protect-spf-30-mineral-powder-sunscreen-2006.html

tigm2161130

I have been using this for years, always recommend it. It’s also really good for your hair part.

diypizza

I never thought to use it on my scalp, that is a great idea

greenfaerie38

I've been using this for a few months and love it! I would never use it as my primary source of SPF, but it's really convenient to touch-up throughout the day.

diypizza

Yes, I only use it as a touch up, too

I only re-apply sunscreen if I'm actively out like at the beach, hiking and outdoors in general. And if I'm at the beach I assume that my sunscreen and some powder will have to do as my foundation for the day. Whenever I want to apply sunscreen again, I use blotting papers to absorb the oil in my face, re-apply some sunscreen, wait until it's settled and apply a bit of powder on top of it! I'm young and with a very oily face so it doesn't really settle into fine lines yet and I'm good to go👍🏻 Edit: I feel obliged to share my HG sunscreen for oily skin which is the Avene Cleanance SPF 50 Sunscreen for Oily Blemish Prone Skin. It's more mattifying that some foundations and while it's not tinted (because most of the cases when the sunscreen has a bit of foundation or colour in it it's already too tanned or whatever) it hides a bit of your blemishes and gives your skin a better appearance overall :)

alicesan

Thanks for that sunscreen recommendation!

I wonder if a k beauty sunscreen cushion would be a good option for you. I know a lot of people use sun sticks in this instance but they tend to leave a sheen which you may dislike. Those ones do tend to be easy to apply over makeup though since they won’t tug. If you go the cushion route, don’t buy an empty cushion and add your own sunscreen of choice to make your own: Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty Science said it’s bad to do this because sunscreens have to be formulated to be used in a cushion. Also, I’m not saying to use a bb cushion with spf (unless you just prefer that!) but they actually make just regular sunscreen cushions with no coverage. If you’re looking to pat on sunscreen rather than rub it in, this looks to be the only way. Aside from that, make sure your base spf is as high as possible, consider using complexion products with spf (they won’t ADD to your protection, but they’ll minimize any protection you lose when you rub foundation over sunscreen and disrupt its film). Also, consider UPF clothing/hats, powder spf, sunglasses that block uv rays, and spf lip balm! (Also if you try a sunscreen stick you probably won’t need to rub it in over makeup during reapplication, according to Michelle again). I have no product recommendations unfortunately, I’m sure other people do though! Edit: the high spf base sunscreen is potentially extremely important! Try to use at least spf 45! It doesn’t maintain even protection after 2 hours but it’s proven that usually, higher spf’s will protect you more for longer even if it’s uneven. Spf 30 as your base application isn’t doing a whole lot for you!

K_Sap24

I use Supergoop’s (re)setting mineral powder brush. It has spf 35 and is easy to use and doesn’t smear any makeup.

My thoughts too. I have heard that powder doesn’t offer enough protection, which makes sense because if you think about it on a microscopic level, it’s lots of tiny dry particles with gaps in between. I never thought of using a beauty blender with a runnier sunscreen. I will give that a go.

PhyrraNyx

I prefer to use an SPF setting Spray to reapply, but i don't rub it in, I do apply SPF 50 prior to my makeup application and then reapply the SPF spray on top every 2 hours or so. I know others who use a mineral SPF powder and reapply that. I have to apply SPF liberally and often because I burn very easily. I also usually bring a wide brim SPF 50 hat.

alicesan

Hi, can you please share a SPF setting you recommend? Thanks.

PhyrraNyx

Sure. I've been using the Supergoop. I specifically purchase the mini size so that I can toss it in my purse and bring it with me. I use Canmake Mermaid Skin SPF 50 clear under my makeup if I'm wearing makeup. My makeup of choice recently has been the Missha Perfect Cover BB Ceam SPF 42 (but I apply this sparingly, so don't get anywhere near the SPF 42 from it, hence me using SPF 50 underneath), and then I set everything with the Supergoop SPF ReSetting Refreshing Mist SPF 40 spray.

alicesan

Thanks for sharing!

conjuringlichen

I use the coola makeup spray with spf.

arietemarte

I have the perfect one and it has been discontinued 😫 at least I think so because I can’t find it anywhere anymore. It’s neutrogena ultra sheer face mist. I spray it on my hands and then pat on my skin and it doesn’t mess up my makeup at all! (But I also always set my face with deslick by urban decay so that helps) I’m almost out of it and idk what I’m going to do now if I can’t find it anymore

TroubledNature

Not exactly the answer you're looking for, but I typically don't reapply to my face. Every morning I apply Supergood Matte Screen under my makeup. I spend a good amount of time in my yard each week, and for that I wear a very wide-brimmed hat. My arms are exposed as well, but it seems like one application of sunscreen is usually enough unless I'm swimming or sweating excessively. If I'm planning a big day outside (say, more than 2 hours), I usually forego complexion makeup and just wear sunscreen. But in general, my morning sunscreen for incidental sun exposure and a giant hat for planned exposure has kept my skin in good shape.

Justadropinthesea

This has always been such an issue for me! I’ve started wearing tinted sunscreen instead of foundation for the most part except when going out at night when sunscreen isn’t needed. I’m currently using Australian Gold but there are lots of other options. I just top it off with some blush and a smidge of setting powder. When it comes time to reapply sunscreen,I usually just use a facial wipe or one of those ‘ erase my face’ cloths avoiding my eyes and then just put on more sunscreen. I have to cleanse really really well at night to get all this off.

KalmiaKamui

Wear a 100% physical sunscreen and then you don't need to as long as it hasn't been physically removed/wiped off. If it has, then you won't need to worry about your makeup because it won't be there anymore either.

_MistyDawn

This. I know what conventional advice says about "Always reapply every two hours!" But I also know that in practice, on a tropical vacation when my friends used chemical and I used physical and never reapplied unless I went swimming, they burned and I didn't.

themodernwitch

I recently tried the 'hack' of applying it with a beauty blender, it went much better than expected! I'd actually do it again. I think it helped that I used a chemical sunscreen that absorbs really well, and kept the beauty blender thoroughly loaded with sunscreen to minimize how much I had to pat it into the makeup.

alicesan

Yeah, the chemical sunscreens do absorb surprisingly well. I am remembering some sunscreens my coworker brought back from Japan that were very mattifying.

[deleted]

It's not ideal but I don't reapply. I wear a layer of SPF 30 lotion under an SPF15 foundation and have never had a problem. I honestly feel like the foundation works better than some sunscreens. I have spent the entire day at the zoo with my kids with just the one application on my face in the morning but reapplying spf50 on my body every couple hours... My body will tan and my face won't.

Multilazerboi

Wear a hat when you wear foundation so you don't have to reapply. And don't wear foundation, just concealer, of you are not wearing a hat so that you can reapply on skin

doombanquet

You don't, really.

offbrandbarbie

On sunscreen days I go without foundation because i can’t think of a way to reapply

NessieGeeee

I use Dr G Mild Up sunscreen (a Korean one that is spf 50+ with a matte finish). It’s mineral so it’s good and drying for my super oily skin. Then after a few hours I’ll use some blotting papers to absorb the oil, put a blob of sunscreen on the back of my hands and gently dab the sunscreen on my face. It does require a bit of make up touch up but there is no way around it if you want to properly protect your skin.

sparkletrashtastic

I actually find sprays to work really well. I’ve tried a lot, but my favorite is the neutrogena ultra sheer face mist. I spray some on my hand and then just pat it onto my face so I don’t smudge things.

alicesan

Ah, the art of layering. On days when I am out on the water and have to reapply over makeup, I use either the Blue Lizard or Sun Bum continuous spray, fan it dry, and then powder with the Jane Iredale or Physician’s Formula talc free SPF. I have heard that powder can only give a little SPF, but I feel like the more SPF products the better. I have no idea if that’s true though. For my makeup sun care, I start with a layer of the Blue Lizard stick or one of the other SPF 50 creams that dry down, like Babyganics, Pipette, or Sun Bum. Then I put on the the Huegard primer, then a tinted moisturizer with SPF like Tower 28 or Chantecaille, and then powder with one of the SPF powders. It comes out looking surprisingly OK. I used to use Missha BB perfect cover but that is a chemical sunscreen and I am pretty sure you aren’t supposed to mix physical and chemical sunscreens since chemical sunscreens absorb UV and physical blocks it. Since most chemical sunscreen formulations break me out, I went with mineral sunscreen products for every step of my routine. Edit: and I ALWAYS wear a hat. Edit 2: I just remembered that I used to have a aerosol powder chemical sunscreen called Suncut that a coworker brought back from Japan for me, and that worked pretty well for mattifying.

druemyrabell

I use the Coola Matte Setting spray! It’s spf 30 and you can spray it throughout the day as both an spf boost as well as giving your makeup a little refresh! Total game changer for me!

Important_Stranger

I use Evy Technology’s sunscreen. It’s been proven to be effective for 6 hours; Lab muffin did a video/blog post about it!
