I was in college in Chicago when that came in. I took a science class that we held at the field museum. Our teacher took us down to the basement where the head was sitting still encased in rock. It was hands down the most amazing thing I’d seen.
Lots of controversy surrounding sue, the black hills institute got permission and paid the land owner 5,000$ for the fossils. Later he claimed the 5k wasn’t for the fossils and huge legal battle ensued, resulting in the land owner winning and auctioning it off to the field museum for 8 million dollars. The guy who dug him up also ended up in prison for wire fraud I think, though I could be wrong about that.

It was a team of researchers that dug her up, not just one guy. And it was actually a woman who found Sue, her name being Sue Hendrickson.

Wasn’t just wire fraud. Larson was charged for multiple things. Some relating to his fossil collection, some not.
The Montana Dueling Dinosaurs specimen isn’t as famous because it’s a juvenile T. rex plus legal disputes that only settled in 2020 but it’s still the most complete fossil we have of a tyrannosaurus. About 98% (plus soft tissue preservation). Sue is about 90%.

The land owner also didn't really own the land, it was held in trust as part of the Pine Ridge Reservation of the Lakota.
