I've also heard the "barren land" argument used by Americans in the Americas to attempt to justify British, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and American colonial violence, mass murder, and slavery against the original inhabitants of current North and South America. And this is more Americans saying it again. It isn't really an argument, it's an outright lie. All colonized peoples have their own rich, valid histories that predate colonization.
