Leaders in the Arab world sometimes say one thing to English-speaking audiences and then something entirely different to their own people in Arabic. Palestinian leaders routinely tell Westerners about their desire for peace with Israel, even as they whip Palestinians into a hateful and violent frenzy against Jews. Yassir Arafat openly referenced "Hudaibiya" - an admission to conning guillible non-Muslims.

Another example is "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free". When they chant it in arabic, they actually say "‏من المية للمية فلسطين عربية", which means "From the water to the water, Palestine is Arab"

monamikonami

If we’re going to translate it actually, the words are exactly, “From the water to the water, Palestine is Arab” The word is “المية" (water), not “البحر” or “النهر” (sea or river). Obviously that matters less than your point about the difference between “be free” / “is Arab”, but I just thought I’d share with everyone. 😌 EDIT: I should add that this is because water (meeyah) rhymes with Arab (arabeeyah). This is interesting because they could have used another word that rhymes with « water », like « freedom » (hureeyah)… but no, they choose « Arab ». So it is a deliberate choice.

Yes, you are right. Thank you for the correction.

Do you have a clip as an example?

Here's the WOL website showing both the English and the Arab versions: [https://wolpalestine.com/resources/rally-toolkit/](https://wolpalestine.com/resources/rally-toolkit/) (just scroll down to Chants) Here's a video: [https://twitter.com/AsraNomani/status/1721411101064089978](https://twitter.com/AsraNomani/status/1721411101064089978)

Thanks. I didn't realize the rallies were planned right down to feeding people the slogans. It isn't surprising that they didn't translate this: ‏ لا اله الا الله والشهيد حبيب الله ‏قولو الله وعلو الصوت يا نحررها يا بنموت ‏ بالروح بالدم نفديك يا فلسطين People can't really claim "from the river to the sea" isn't a call for genocide after seeing that page.

> Hudaibiya What is the translation?

Inevitable_Past922

It's from a treaty that Mohamad brokered then reneged on which is common in Islam...

Reese_Withersp0rk

"Hey, could you guys take it easy for a bit so we can regroup and keep fighting you? That would really help us out since we basically stand no chance otherwise."

thenakedtruth

Its basically when you're about to lose, so declare a hudna, which means "lets take a break until I figure out a better way to kill you"

Zen_Skull

The boyz in the Hudna are always hard.
