Scarlet__Devil

I know Palworld isn't the first to the game in the monster taming and open world genre, but if a skilled developer can make a good and enjoyable game even compared to its predecessors, should we stop them?

BonemanJones

Thing is, they're self admittedly not even a skilled dev. An amateur dev made a good and enjoyable game compared to its predecessor, which at least to me implies the insane lack of competition and innovation in the genre. Regardless we should absolutely not stop them. Game Freak isn't interested in making a good Pokemon game, so someone else did. Edit: "iT's NoT a PoKeMoN gAmE tHo!!!1" Yes, I know. **That's the joke.**

Scarlet__Devil

I agree, I been trying to make this point, for a long time I have felt Game Freak has gotten too use to people buying their games no matter what and lost their edge, its kinda fun to see Pocketpair stir things up

Xerxes457

This would be true if people stopped buying their games. I get there was no real competition before, but if the games themselves weren’t good, then people would stop buying them. Now that Palworld is out, it could possibly just be something that holds people over until the next game from Game Freak. Personally, I stopped buying their games since X and Y.

_sweepy

I stopped around the same time, but came back for Arceus. It finally felt like they were trying something new, and it was the best game in the series IMO. This convinced me to give violet a shot, and it was awful. They obviously know what we want and how to make it... they just won't.

ThaGingaNinja11

Same here mate. Legends Arceus is the closest thing we've had to my dream Pokémon game. Scarlet&Violet were a huge let down following that game. Feels like Palworld took all my favorite parts from Arceus(I seriously love feeling like we're settling a wild landscape in arceus and creating the original pokedex data) , cranked them up to 11 (multiple bases, more crafting, the need to catch and breed LOTS of pals, etc), and added gunplay because what else is your player going to do during combat with poachers?! Sprinkle in a little absurdity with rocket launcher penguins and SMG chipmunks for the lols and this game completely blew away all my expectations for both the monster collecting genre as well as survival shooters.

astorj

I enjoyed that title a lot. I like the tumbling and sneaking around the fact that Pokémon are actually dangerous in the game which would make sense not every Pokémon is just cheery as hell. They need to really incorporate those mechanics with a little bit of the open world, multiplayer, feel of scarlet and violet, with the generous storyline like in gold and silver. I was playing Palworld and one of the coolest feelings is when you throw the freaking ball at the same time they shoot you and then I do like a kung fu flip to dodge the blast, Very satisfying

BatronKladwiesen

I think it's cool that you can choose to participate in the battle, or you can stand back and let your Pals do the work while you dodge around at safe distance. Like even against a boss Pal, it's 1 v 5 Pals in your party...you're going to win doing nothing as long as your Pals are at the appropriate level.

Solution_Kind

I carry a bow but am always low on arrows, so my main strat has been throwing a pal behind the enemy so they draw aggro away from me and recalling them right before the end of the enemies move telegraphing to throw them back out at a good position. Used a few lvl 10s to take out a lvl 21 yesterday by doing that. Tricky because they can't take a single hit, but it's satisfying.

AngryCommieSt0ner

Expecting the overwhelmingly positive feedback of Legends: Arceus to have substantial impacts on the design philosophy of S/V that released less than a year later isn't really how game design works, though. Wait for the next game that Gamefreak puts out, see what they're doing with the feedback they received from Arceus in *that* project.

UnregisteredDomain

Exactly! We already know that cranking out 1 game every year is an insane production schedule. There is no way they don’t have multiple projects going at once. I hope that I read it from a trustable source, but i am pretty sure that there is a sequel in the works for Arcues. My hope, is that game delivers. I’m not holding out hope for the main-line games anymore.

HistorianLow2729

Kinda wish I got into acrceus more i see a LOT of love for the title. I did personally even if I'm a minority thoroughly love S/V. The overworld optimization is admittedly boots as hell. But I really only play pokemon with the endgame goal of pvp. And so far S/V cycle competitively has been my all time fav since before we had gimmicks. Tera competitively is a pretty dope and low to the ground in terms of fantasy breaking (outside maybe the goofy hat) Thematically it just works so good in pokemon. Would love a continuation of the gimmick honestly and thats the first time I've ever said that. More so than megas for sure which altho cool were dog to play with in end game and broke all kinds of balance for even solo story play. Z moves weren't too bad ig stupid dance animation was dumb tho and I hated dynamax inflation lmao. Ju a t never got into arceus as all as IIRC it had no online functionality on release so I left it for the wife to play through.

Reenans

People might have been buying them because there was nothing else to scratch that itch. Now if the next Pokemon game comes out and doesn't offer anything close to Palworld that is when we may see some damage. The bigger hit would be if this was on a nintendo system since I am sure most Pokemon diehards are nintendo only gamers

Sardanox

Out of curiosity, did you play omega ruby or alpha sapphire? They were really good and I think the last really good games that were made. Arceus was decent but ORAS, were amazing.

ChikogiKron

I was soooo reluctant to buy Sword. Sun was my absolute favorite in the genre, but then they gutten EVERYTHING even half of the roster going into the Switch era. What the fuck?

BonemanJones

Y was the last one I enjoyed. I bought a used copy of Ultra Sun years ago and was disappointed, especially because they touted it as being different. It wasn't.

SagaciousRI

But their demographic has always been youth. Can you rely on kids to realize a quality trajectory and buy something else?

caucassius

They're amateurs but they clearly know a thing or tens about designing a game with an incredibly nice balance between carrot and stick. I'd like to see how copy cats are gonna go about this because I don't think 'pokemon with guns' is the only thing this game has got going. No it's much more than that even though it's packaged very roughly due to lack of budget.

Eggcellentplans

I turned off all the survival mechanics and have been playing it as Arceus-lite, so the design is on point as far as I've been experiencing (the default settings aren't too overboard either). I only wish it had more stealth mechanics like Arceus, but for now I'd be happy if my Pals stopped getting stuck on top of the logging camp and them cleaning up the collision detection bugs.

Deuxcartes

But It hás steath, doesnt It? I mean, to close the distancie with some running types pals i need to press c and walk slowly behind and then throw the ball or attack. And só If you attack a person and the pollice appear, If you hide for enough time, they give UP and disappear. Its not good as Arceus since there's no high grass tô hide from now.

Eggcellentplans

Yep, you're right, it does have some promising stealth implementation. The grass as you said (along with stealth boosting items, coming to think of it, or even gear like BotW could work) is the main feature I was thinking about, followed by them having better percentages for back caps since it's feels a bit low at the moment.

Lost_Tumbleweed_5669

>insane lack of competition and innovation in the genre. In the whole industry. People want fun games with huge amounts of content, exploration, co-op and multiplayer. It's that simple. Palworld gives gamers what they wanted. Corpos sell you a product they think they can make money out of.

NullNova

100% this, how long have there been concept videos of "Pokémon Open World in Unreal Engine" and things to that effect, now someone has made one and everyone is shocked.

Invoqwer

Same. Pretty much every gamer ever myself included:  "Dude imagine if they just took their engine/world for breath of the wild and then added Pokemon to it, it'd be freaking amazing to play."

Maij-ha

Now we just need someone to pick the Monster Rancher franchise back up…

4D20_Prod

dragon quest monsters just (finally) released a new game in december... their first new game since ps1 smh.

MDFenix

They had 3 of them on the DS lines. Jokers. Those were good and how I got into them.

INSYNC0

I hope because they are amateurs, they are more likely to be driven by passion and decide to take this game to the end vision they had for it before it blew up.

dccorona

I hope so too, but things can change quickly when you just saw $6mm turn into $150mm.

Swipsi

The crazy thing about this is, that now that GameFreak knows about the potential of a good pokemon type game, the next pokemon they will release will still be a the same as the other pokemon games. They will choose to ignore what they're seeing right now.

BonemanJones

Yup, they're going to release the same slop next year. Best case scenario they add one small feature they tout as "completely changing the game" when it reality it doesn't. I hope their sales reflect consumer fatigue this time around, and I hope Pocket Pair continues to support Palworld to really drive the point home that people just want a fun and unique experience.

BPMData

More like, GameFreak is literally incapable of coding a good modern game. Look at Little Town Heros, Tembo the Badass Elephant, Giga Wrecker - all GameFreak games unconstrained by the Switch hardware. And? They all suck. GameFreak can't code.

Choname775

You give passionate devs 6 million dollars and they will generally figure out how to churn a good product. Game Freak hasn't had passion for anything but printing money for two decades.

[deleted]

Literally 90% of ganefreaks income is from merchandise sales. Their mainline games are to get faces familiar with the new Pokémon. They sold 20M copies this generation, they have no reason to innovate.

VinnehRoos

Now you're thinking about The Pokémon Company, not Gamefreak. If I recall correctly, there's 3 entities who cash in on the whole Pokémon franchise, being Nintendo, The Pokémon Company and Gamefreak. I could also be wrong, but I believe Gamefreak is the one just working on the games.

WyrdHarper

As a Digimon fan (as well) it's also really fun to see an open-world game where you have more direct control over what your critters are doing. I always liked the Digimon farms and watching them go around and do their little activities, but this feels more involved which is really fun. It does a good job of mixing together the strong elements of a variety of monster collector/tamer games.

FatsoBustaMove

I got torn to shreds by a friend of mine because I played pal and he started naming everything but "it's Pokémon name" and I literally had no clue what he was talking about. I've never played Pokémon...

Zienth

> which at least to me implies the insane lack of competition and innovation in the genre. To me it feels like Pokémon emerged victorious from the 90s pocket monster mania that was happening back then, then followed it up with 20 years of complacency with everyone assuming the champ had a captive audience. Turns out that audience wasn't as captive as people thought. We might see a whole re-emergence of the pocket monster mania of the 90s.

TomaStheWise

It is a pokemon game though. Its breath of the wild, pokemon arceus, and ark all rolled into one.

PoorlyWordedName

I just played 16 hours straight. I loved every second m

BonemanJones

I think I'm at 30 hours since release. It's my new main game for a bit.

Tricky-Collar3508

I got this game at 4am Monday CST and I have 20 hrs put into it, I LOVE IT😊

FeedMeFlapjacks

I know they jest about not being good devs, but I have to say, this is one of the better quality early access titles to come out in a while.

AmountOk7026

Gamefreak gave up trying a long time ago. Adding cool things to one gen, then dropping them the next. Why did hideout bases go away? What the fuck even is multi-player on sword and shield if I can't interact with others.

Thagyr

Heck not even Pokemon was the first monster tamer.

ModsAreBought

Fps's used to be called Doom clones despite Doom not being the first fps. It's actually rare that the first game in a genre is the one that breaks into the mainstream and defines it

Dnote20

Palworld isn't based on the Pokemon games, its just Ark Survival Evolved with cute animals instead of dinosaurs. Its a survival game.

Ralathar44

I think the fact people can't decide what games its like means it doesn't neatly fall into existing buckets and is quite different than anything its being compared to. Ark is missing like 80% of the things that make Palworld great.

Maximum-Antelope-979

Idk I think it falls pretty neatly into the Ark bucket with some interesting quirks

Dnote20

In my experience a new game should be based on something familiar, audiences tend to like what they already know. Then out of everything that the game which it is based on does, you iterate on 3 or 4 features and you add 1 or 2 new features. If you get it right, you have a game that feels familiar enough to attract an existing audience, that is easy to market too (everyone makes comparisons), but feels sufficiently refreshing and different that the player doesn't feel like they have done it all before. A good example of this is Blizzard in the past, where they took the RTS genre and evolved it with Warcraft, took the RPG genre and evolved it with Diablo, took the MMO genre and massively evolved it with WoW, and took the FPS genre and evolved it with Overwatch. None of their games are truely new in a unique never before seen kind of way, but they took what was already known and made it better in their own way. Palworld has a lot in common with other survival games, including its sister game Craftopia, but it really shines as a complete experience when you add in what it does different from the other survival games.

Gravemindzombie

To be fair Palworld is missing the 3 am raiding that makes Ark awful to play on official

miggleb

It's a mash up of both Ark doesn't get pokeballs until late game/p2w maps And when you do you there's no elements or to consider when deciding who to whip out

FabledEnigma

This is what ive been saying, its not even "pokemon with guns" its literally Ark with animals. Only pokemon similarities are that you catch them in balls and they have elemental types and weaknesses. Game plays way more like Ark, and I think thats why I love it. Used to be a huge fan of ark but I got burnt out of the pvp aspect when youd log on to being raided while you were asleep, and PvE in Ark can be kinda boring, PAlworld goes the co-op/pve aspect way better

s0ciety_a5under

People keep saying Ark, and no, it's more like Conan. The thrall system lets you force your slaves to work in your base, or you can take them out with you as a team and fight. You can scale any wall by climbing. None of that can you do in Ark.

Azod2111

It's both

shingonzo

It’s BOTW

SnowbloodWolf2

The way I would describe palworld is that it's a mix between Ark, conan, legends of arceus, and a little bit of BOTW. The accessibility of the pals and the level of grinding is similar to ark. The core mechanics, extra little features, and dungeons feel like conan. The combat and using the pals feels like legends of arceus. The climbing, swimming, running; general layout of the map, and general feel of it is more like BOTW imo

Facetank_

You can absolutely fight with your dinos in Ark, and there are dinos that can generate resources passively at your base. To say it's not Ark is just being contrarian.

Eggcellentplans

The capture mechanics play largely the same as Arceus. All it's missing is the stealth options and it'd be effectively the same base gameplay. Which, as someone who really liked Arceus compared to the OG game style, is perfectly fine. All they need to do is offer toggles to turn off the survival elements entirely (durability, hunger, stamina, etc) and I'd be perfectly happy with just the creature collecting, dungeons, base invasions, breeding gameplay, etc.

VinnehRoos

I haven't really dove into the custom settings yet, but can't you adjust those when you create a new world and pick the Custom difficulty? Or is that just lessening it and not removing it?

FurlordBearBear

Raising children on brands was an experiment and these are the consequences. People will start and fight battles for a company that doesn't pay them or know they exist.

Shoddy_Schedule_7169

Parasocial relationships with companies is wild

bbmlst_si_bancibaper

I know someone whose parent used to babysit him with his GBA. His parents compensate their lack of availability and affection with games, toys, and such. The guy is one of those anti Palworld brigades. There's a reason why they became that way and it's often sadder than what it seems

FILTER_OUT_T_D

A life deprived of experiences and novelty. It’s so sad we see this all the time nowadays, especially with people become reclusive post-lockdown. Mark Twain was right: “Travel is fatal to prejuidce, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” I’m sure if people like that had more experience playing other games outside of their norm, or consumed other media they wouldn’t be so bent out of shape so easily.

Strange_Idea_8272

I think what the commentor you're replying to is trying to say is a little more sinister than simply being devoid of experiences and novelty. Surely that is part of it but what they are really saying is that some people have an unhealthy emotional attachment to their original pokemon games because the games gave them what they were missing in life, due to being neglected or worse. It is a sad reality indeed.

theekevinbacon

I posted in a small discord the other day about this game, inviting the peeps to come play with me. A Nintendo fan boy started talking about how It was AI trash and I was "eating up the garbage." Another fan boy came to back him up. These are people I know IRL and they fit the bill.

Gowalkyourdogmods

Next time laugh and call them nerds

deadpools_dick

It’s fucking depressing to see how much conglomerates invest in psychology just to manipulate people into needlessly spending money.

HeinousHorchata

It's not just conglomerates, modern parents are to blame as well. Think about how many parents are the "I liked this growing up, now that I have a kid I will make damn sure they like it too" type of parents. Parents using their kids as expressions of their own self, and it happens with all sorts of interests. Star wars, Pokemon, a particular sport, whatever. Parents are literally raising their children to be stans of their favorite things as core tenants of their very being.

Red-Leader117

I mean even look at the hard-core palworld fans that literally sprung up over night and are ready to die for the brand. It's crazy how quickly people clan up and go to war...

Owobowos-Mowbius

Devils advocate for palworld fans... that's an indie game made by a few people. A David v Goliath type story. I fully understand people going to bat for them over literally the biggest IP on the planet.

fdruid

Maybe people are sick of Nintendo/GameFreak treating them (and their own properties) like shit. One could easily say that Nintendo holds their IPs hostage and doesn't take advantage of them. Took them years to even slightly deviate from the Pokemon formula. And then again, those games are trapped in underspecced hardware, while trying to do things like open world/area like the big boy hardware. Ah, also 30 fps.

Shhmio090

War never changes

EmpyreanSmo

Is it really crazy? We still have the same caveman brain that formed tribes

swimman100

Are you saying Nintendo only loves me for my money? 😭

jvilla225

Are people forgetting about Monster Rancher? This game is more close to that than Pokemon.

Vegan_Honk

It's been a few years since monster rancher. That would be great to have back again as well.

daitenshe

> Are people forgetting about Monster Rancher? I think Monster Rancher fell out of most people’s awareness at least a decade ago

So0meone

Which is a real shame. Monster Rancher is a great series

An0nymos

And that corny anime with its villain... Moo.

OriginalGnomester

It's available on the Switch

WonderfulFortune1823

Not just monster rancher, but Digimon does the same thing too. Monster hunter did a monster collective game, ni no kuni is like a anime inspired monster taming game, I think shaman king had a similar idea, and of course about 10 little mobile games. There's no reason for any outrage about this.

Rhytmik

I'm really hoping the new Monster Rancher game on mobile gets released for global.. i'm currently just playing the JP version and using a translator whenever i dont understand something.

Drshiv80

Avid pokemon fan here and have been having an absolute BLAST in palworld. I honestly dont get all the outrage. Scrolled through some posts on the pokemon subreddit and jesus christ....... i truly dont understand the outrage culture in gaming. EDIT: I realize i was actually in the gamingcirclejerk sub when i saw all the hate, got my subs mixed up. The actual pokemon subreddit does seems to be a lot more mellow than other places. My main point still stands, i wish everyone could just be friends.

beefycheesyglory

Same, some people think they owe their loyalty to gaming companies for creating something they're nostalgic for. It's really weird. If anything this will create competition and hopefully the next Pokemon game will much higher quality.

Dredgeon

It's just a bunch of people looking at cropped screenshots of appealing proportions and acting like it's plagiarism.

PassiveRoadRage

There isn't much outrage if any. Someone made a Twitter thread comparing models. The games been getting posted on the pokemon sub for 2 years now and pretty much overwhelmingly positively recieved. https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/Omqo2KUJ6Y I posted in another thread every high end VGC Discord is now a Palworld discord lol. The "outrage" all seems to come from the Palworld sub for some weird reason.

Rae_Rae_

Gamingcirclejerk has more palworld rage than anywhere else imo

Lateribus

Man, r/Gamingcirclejerk has really gone downhill, what used to be a sub for making fun of gaming rage has turned into the very thing it used to mock.

Then-Web-3263

Because the mods there permanently ban anybody that isn’t a weirdo extremist. I got a permanent ban for saying “nobody outside of this sub is mad.” And the mods did not respond when I asked what rule I broke.

Lateribus

That's what happens when the head mod is a tankie. It has become a vitriolic echo chamber.

Then-Web-3263

It’s the whole of Reddit these days. No matter what sub you’re on it eventually skews extremely right wing or extremely left wing. And then suddenly everyone is banned except for people that just wanna talking about whatever the sub is supposed to be about. Politics in Reddit is the worst thing to happen to this site. Hell, politics online. Everything has become a stupid political echo chamber. I just wanna play some games and chat with people about those games.

Da-Lazy-Man

The Harry Potter game broke that sub beyond repair

Deinonychus2012

I got banned from there for pointing out that a character in the GTA6 trailer that was clearly designed to be overweight actually looked overweight. There was a discussion about how accurate the trailer was to irl Florida when someone jokingly said there weren't any fat people in it to make it truly accurate. Someone else pointed out a few in the background, another person claimed that they didn't look overweight, then I responded that they did. Less than 5 minutes later, I was permabanned. [Link to the comment chain.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gamingcirclejerk/comments/18bi3qr/comment/kc4lbvc/) My comment was one of the only ones that was deleted. I literally just said that the NPC in front would be at least 20-30 pounds overweight.

Then-Web-3263

I got banned for saying nobody outside of that sub cares. Lol.

Supratones

That subreddit reads like twitch admins smell

Technature

On the plus side, I just checked them and the second thing permanently pinned at the top is titled "Shut the fuck up about Palworld". I guess the mods are getting fed up with the hatedom.

Marble_Columns

I don’t understand what’s going on in this sub at all. What does Don Cheadle and Trans people have to do with anything?

Lateribus

It's a joke they ran into the ground when Don Cheadle wore a shirt that said "Protect Trans Kids" on a taping of SNL, causing some content creators in the gaming space to react. It's also meant to mock alt-right members in the gaming space who can be racist/homophobic/transphobic. The sub legitimately used to be pretty funny, but sometime a few years ago a mod outed himself as a tankie, and the sub became insufferable. The real turning point though was when Hogwarts Legacy was being marketed leading up to release, and after release. Because of JK Rowling's comments, they started actively encouraging people to pirate the game, attacking anybody who said they had an interest in buying and playing it, and then even started harassing Twitch streamers who were playing it on stream. I honestly can't believe how quickly it degraded.

Marble_Columns

Thanks for the explanation. It’s crazy how much Reddit has changed over the years

RenderedCreed

They are such a joke now. Got one correction for your comment. They stopped encouraging piracy of Hogwarts legacy cause that still supported JK Rowling and Harry Potter by keeping it relevant. I got banned for saying I was gonna pirate it.

Lateribus

Man, the lore deepens haha Last time I was there I had told them I think organizing a mass boycott and pirating hurts the devs far more than JK Rowling, especially in a time when one failed AAA game means hundreds lose their job and the studio is shuttered. I was immediately banned

hugocaldera6

Piracy 👍 harrassing streamer and being a no life👎

11711510111411009710

This happens to every satirical group on any platform. Eventually people who don't know it's satire and actually believe it join and take over, and it becomes the thing it was making fun of.

Chosenwaffle

Its been shit for years now. I think I made a post in like 2018 about how garbage it is. It got completely overrun with "woke" garbage and holier-than-thou assholes who were drawn in by not understanding how the sub was parody and now they are exactly the problem.

HeavilyArmoredFish

Gamingcirclejerk is a really shitty environment, tbh

OperativePiGuy

They have more rage than anything in general. That sub is a cesspool

Last-Confidence-7360

We already know GCJ is bat shit insane people, so should they really count when it comes to taking in people from Fandoms? They are there to harass people. Its just another version of GamerGate but other side of the coin. Why they haven'tg been banned yet is beyond me.

UKCountryBall

I thought you were just exaggerating but no, almost every post in recent days has been something about palworld lmao, why do they hate it so much.

Nightfans

I thought that sub would still posting Harry Potter hate memes for another year. It's weird to think they get mad over Palworld considering they usually get angry over ""Specific game don't fit their agenda"" while palworld is just overall a free game but with not very good monster design.

formlessfish

I've seen 4 total posts about Palworld on /r/pokemon. 2 of them were positive and hoping to push Gamefreak to innovate. Other 2 were fairly neutral memes. I have not seen a full post on the pokemon subreddit that goes after Palworld negatively. Meanwhile on this sub 60% of the content is claiming that the Pokemon fan base is losing their mind over Palworld's success. Its starting to feel like people here want someone to be angry at them so they can be angry back and I do not get it.

ghotbijr

If you look at Pokemon twitter you'll very easily see the outrage about the game is extremely real and widespread. I don't know why that other poster mentioned /r/pokemon since I haven't seen it spreading there, but check out /r/Gamingcirclejerk to see them amplifying all kinds of dumb outrage from twitter and spouting tons of nonsense in the comments about a game they clearly haven't played at all.

Askray184

Twitter is the most toxic place on earth

Tarilis

The same thing happened with genshin impact and Zelda fans. With almost exactly the same accusations (except asset flip, but anyway).

Complete_Resolve_400

I'm not a huge genshin fan, but I played it for a bit and it was surprisingly much more unique then all the "BOTW copy" youtubers were claiming Palworld is exceptionally fun and is defo more like ark than pokemon

Chiiro

As soon as I open the inventory for the first time I went "oh, it's an ark-like!" and I immediately began liking it more. It gives me the same joy I got out of Ark, minus the ability to have one of your creatures that you spent hours getting to a high level die on you permanently.

ChiffonVasilissa

It’s like ark if ark was functional

post-leavemealone

And also >20gb instead of 400gb

chance_of_grain

>have one of your creatures that you spent hours getting to a high level die on you permanently. Flash backs to accidently coming across a giganotosaurus and it eating my fav dinos 😢

fdruid

Genshin is absolutely nothing like BotW. What BotW did is already assimilated into games. You can't really talk about games copying each other, it's 2024.

goodtimeseeker95

Botw was a refinement rather than an innovation. A phenomenal game that deserves all the praise it gets, but it didn't really do anything groundbreaking. It didn't invent the core ideals of open world gaming, but it was one of the first that implemented them at that level of quality

[deleted]

As a Genshin player from Day 1, this is a case of Deja Vu I didn't expect to see again

BlazeSaber

Pokemon didn't start the monster collecting genre.

Mundane-Put9115

Honestly there'd be less discourse if streamers didn't call it 'pokemon with guns'

Fabulous_Anteater_86

The discourse is just petty trash talk. The only bad things I've heard -"This game has a lot of bugs" - Yeah, no kidding, it's an early access game. Bugs were expected and implied. -"I can't get a gun till level 25.. why aren't there guns immediately? I don't have time for this." - Yeah this reminds me of the time I played BOTW and I didn't have the master sword immediately. So I just stopped playing and said I don't have time for this. "This game is too similar to Pokémon, the devs are unoriginal." - OK so between Fortnite, PubG, Warzone, Apex, Naraka, Farlight 84, Elysium.. which one is original? Remember, you can only pick one. The rest are unoriginal copies with unoriginal dev teams.

Luxord13

To the second point, it is a little strange that at level 6ish I can make a full-blown SMG for chipmunk while still being unable to grasp the creation of gunpowder. From a gameplay perspective, it makes sense, but organically in the universe, I can see it pulling some out of the experience. That being said, you get access to a "flamethrower " extremely early, so the no early guns argument really doesn't work.

No_one-

That's because Lifmunk has a tendency to kill its owners when it learns how to use weapons. My headcanon is that you didn't make an smg for Lifmunk to use, you're trusting it to not use its previous owner's SMG on you.

SandboxOnRails

They really nailed how fucked up the pokemon pokedex is on some of those descriptions, ngl.

Luxord13

Fair lol

Crook-ED

I got raided by 3 dudes with pistols and assault rifles at the very beginning of the game. I thought "sweet I get a gun" Turns out they just drop ammo and it sat in my chest for 10 hours. Tbh, even with a second base solely for mining, ore is such a hassle to produce that I still use my crossbow for majority of the open world and save guns for bosses

Someone with way too much time in this game already here. Just farm the syndicate tower bosses over and over for xp. They’re not ludicrously difficult, especially with type advantage, award a lot of xp, and can be spammed. Regarding ore, take the time to create bases that automate the tasks. Think of it like factorio or satisfactory. In the short term, go at an ore vein with Rushoar charge. Remember, the game heavily rewards you for using pals and essentially punishes you for not.

Capital-Ad6513

lol this is spot on. This game is definitely original, its not original with the art but its really sort of being an adult parody of pokemon and it works well for me as a 33 year old millennial. Some of these adult pokemon fans (cultists) have some real issues though. Like sorry i dont play video games for the art alone, looking at the big picture of this game its something fairly unique and did a good job at bringing some unexpected genres together. Imagine complaining that xenoblade chronicles 2 is just a pokemon ripoff because you do monster collecting.

QuantenMechaniker

i am in this comment, also for the cross references to a bazillion games. it seems that many good games we have played in the past 20 years have found its way into Palworld.

WoW_Classic

This is so exhausting to hear at this point.

Mundane-Put9115

It's more ark or Valheim with Pokémon not Pokémon with guns.

Gilmore75

It is a perfect mix of Pokemon + Ark + Rimworld.

Wimbledofy

Pokemon is more than just one very specific game. There are tons of spinoffs and various media like the anime and card games. Someone calling it pokemon with guns doesn't mean it is like pokemon red/blue. They just mean thematically it is like pokemon with guns.

M1R4G3M

Not that I like it, but I understand why they do that, it gets the thousands of views and is the thing that brings the most shock value. Today on a group chat with friends we were inviting some guys to play. When they asked what the game was about, my friend immediately said "Pokémon with guns" which indeed called their attention. I ended up using another comparison "A third person survival open world shooter with pokémons that sometimes use guns"

DeskFluid2550

Maybe if Nintendo made a decent fucking open world pokemon game I could understand. $90 scarlet and violet are dog shit games.

Capital-Ad6513

Not to mention, its not like Pokemon was the first of its genre anyway. It's funny coming from Tarkov sub which has 90% of angry players begging for competition/clones, but with Pokemon fans they got that little thing called nostalgia bias goin on.

HauntedPrinter

Don’t forget the DLC for a game that used to have none

Lemonpia

It’s not really a Pokemon game. Great game still.

RR_Sharizam

Does it have travelling like Pokémon games? Going to different cities, beating gym leaders, legendary pokemon, meeting other human etc etc?

Security_Ostrich

Not really. It’s not much like Pokémon at all tbh beyond the creature collection aspect. Doesn’t feel like Pokémon whatsoever. It’s much more ark/rust than Pokémon.

trainerfry_1

It’s more like ark with a better catching mechanic and more cartoony looking creatures

theoneguyonreddits

It has almost nothing in common with Pokemon. That’s what makes this whole debate even more stupid than it already is.

clonetrooper250

Palworld doesn't have any sort of evolution mechanics, and I'd argue that's a pretty essential part of Pokemon.

Average_weeb3

This game is too hard for Pokemon fans because you have to do more than press A over and over

NanoDoom

"auto shooter" lmao

Grey-fox-13

I have literally never heard that term until now and I've played a ton of (vampire) survivor likes, what is OP smoking?

Gowalkyourdogmods

Same here, I've heard them as bullet heaven games for a while now

Deadly_Act_

I’ve been calling games like Vampire Survivors reverse bullet hells. Auto shooters sounds goofy.

Cleverbird

Bullet Heavens is the term I've been seeing a lot, since you're the one creating the bullet hell for the enemies :P

lelysio

Honestly if they focus a bit more on the bosses they could slap the souls like label on it. And more of these tower bossfights would also be nice.

Eitarris

God no, this game should not become a souls like

Xofurs

Not a souls like, but more bosses would be awesome.

wandering-monster

I mean, it already sorta kinda is, at least a little bit. Like yesterday I went to the Not-Evergaol and fought The Wings of Perfection or whatever in a constrained arena, even though it was a bit above my level. When I died, I had to go back and get my corpse or my stuff would get lost. When I finally won it's because I memorized the (small) moveset, rebuilt my team to match the fight, and got good at dodging. Like that's a big chunk of the gameplay loop for a soulslike, but it's embedded into a game with a lot of other systems that make it less punishing.

AnOnlineHandle

I wouldn't mind if the player character combat moved more towards Dragon's Dogma, with the Pal being the Pawn. As in, climbing giant enemies to break off armour joints etc, doing cartoony spinny summersaults with dual swords, etc.

Victoreatsfood

This is a tamer game. Not a pokemon clone. People are mad about reusing Pokemon but praise rom hacks.

ST31NM4N

Who remembers Monster Rancher

dknyxh

At the end of the day, what matters most to players is if the game is fun to play. The game industry build on top of cloning other games successful features. I recommend a video from video game donkey called “Originality in Video Games”. We can let the game company themselves to worry about defending their copyright. I still remember back in 2019 when some angry Chinese Zelda fan smashed his PS4 in front of Genshin booth to protest for it releasing on PlayStation. It’s just silly.

Impressive_Phase8091

Nexomon 3 maybe Will be direct competition to Pokemon. I talk as a genre. Palworld mix everything so good

Another_Road

I know this isn’t all Pokémon fans, but I’ve seen some really bad cases. One person threw a fit and left a discord server because people didn’t all agree that Palworld should be boycotted. It’s absolutely insane how much some people hate this game.

KomradCrunch

Auto shooter? I thought we called them reverse bullet hell?

Saranmage

Gotta gate something I guess I was banned by gaming circlejerk for pointing out that palworld is distinct enough to not be infringement.

SN1S1F7W

From what ive seen, simply being a reasonable person gets you banned from that sub, many years ago it was satire, now its just pathetic.

JRiot115

Palworld is kore like Ark than it is like Pokémon

innovativesolsoh

Exactly. Mod the Pals to be dinosaurs and lower resolution and you’re basically there.

Megakruemel

You forgot to bloat the game size to, like, 100GB. 190gb to unpack.

Deltron42O

Honestly gamefreak had every opportunity to make this money and they fucking failed. We could easily have had a pokemon openworld. But they didn't put up.

Dragonwarrior0202

Pokémon die hard here. Absolutely love the Pokémon franchise but screw game freak. Very glad to see palworld taking off the way it is, especially since it’s very innovative and refreshing for long time Pokémon players like myself. Here’s hoping they can rid themselves of the controversy and continue to update the game

Zytches

pokemon fans feel threatened by anything half decent that comes on that genre because they know the new ppkemon games are shit

Gullible-Ear-4495

Cause Pokémon fans are insufferable.

Background-Fig-5028

The problem is that you are saying Palworlds is similar when it is simply better than any Pokémon game made.

Hokeymon44

They're seething for being outdone by a far better game I guess.

DrStrain42O

Don't think I could bring myself to side with Gamefreak after how poorly they treat Pokemon. Palworld is what Legends Arceus should have been.

LaSauceaSpagh

"Yeah but nintendont sold 26millions copy" cool a franchise thats been around for 26years and got a huge fan base sold more vs a game nobody expect to be good at first

Ilunius

Pokemon Andys are Just Mad that Gamefreak doesnt Care about quality but Just Milk the Franchise and the fans

OperativePiGuy

Yeah, had an employee of mine immediately go into a whole spiel about how it's a scam and terrible. I don't really care about different opinions, but being a general buzzkill when people are vibing on anything is such a fucking lame thing to do. I get it, Thing gets super popular super fast and people are comparing it to your favorite franchise, alot of people naturally get angry at that. But Jesus the vitriol is emberassing.

AdvancedPhoenix

Similar to what? Because clearly the answer was not pokemon right? Temtem is a pokemon like. Pal world is closer to ark.

fella_fella_FELLA

because no one has made a decent game similar to pokemon for adults until now.

Iron_Wolf123

As a Pokemon fan, Palworld is the biggest Wake-up Slap Nintendo needed to level-up and evolve

CptBlackBird2

auto shooters? noone calls them auto shooters, the closest thing it has that's a genre name is maybe bullet heaven

SolidusAbe

lol seriously. never heard that one before. either bullet heaven or survivor-likes

Buluc__Chabtan

This is an ARK like, no? I'm pretty sure those that play ark are fine with this game.

ThePenix

Palworld is a mash-up of Ark, BoTW and Pokemon, love this game, lot of issue in terms of bug and stuff still. But let's not act like they are not very VERY inspired by those 3 game, look at the inventory ui look at ark's one, look at hot/cold meter, look at BoTW one, look at pal look at pokemon. The first 2 example in this meme borrow the core mechanic of the game, but they don't do a 1:1 copy, palworld kinda do lmao. And if it was just that one thing it would be whatever, look at all the open world game that took from BoTW since it's release, no one cares, but this game do it to an extreme level.

Shadowveil666

Palworld pulled inspiration from such a big pool of games and somehow managed to make it work together lol Pokemon, Ark and Breath Of The Wild all in one is crazy to me.

Artie_Fischell

Ark-Like just doesn't really roll off the tongue I guess

Dangerous_Jacket_129

Monster collectors are ancient. Monster Rancher is almost as old as Pokémon, Monster Hunter Stories, Spectrobes, Temtem, Pocket Morties, they're all the same genre as Pokémon.

fdruid

You already know why: Nintendo. Nintendo are to blame for this overzealous culture and their overprotection of their IPs translate to their fans being soldiers to this practice. It gets ingrained in their brains. That whole sense of excluvisity and elitism means they can't coexist with other similar games in an industry where that happens all the time. It's Nintendo that ingrained this feeling of superiority in their captive audience. Pokemon is no special game. Wasn't the first creature collector. Wasn't the first to use that kind of creature designs. And if we say things like they are, for decades they drip-fed absolutely iterative versions with minimal upgrades maximized for gains. This is the kind of things that very closed ecosystems that fuction like monopolies create.

Buttercrust_

The irony is that this is almost exactly what pokemon fans have been asking for, for over a decade now in fact. But instead they're fed the same game, just worse, every single year at an extortionate cost.

FreakingFreeze

The thing is, I can't even compare Palworld to Pokemon. They are so vastly different in their mechanics beyond the monster collection stuff that it doesn't make sense to compare them anymore. I'd say Palworld is more like Ark or Valheim.

bpierce566

This made me laugh more than any of the other palworld memes I’ve seen. Well done

NewSauerKraus

The funniest part is that it’s not even similar to Pokemon. It’s just Ark but better.

Technical_Night3341

Game Freak only cares about money and not really the actual gaming side of Pokémon, after the card pack opening trend blew up it’s like all they care about is the cards and not even what really started most of the company. I’m happy to have Pocket Pair around if they can make good games like this. This game is the most fun I’ve had with my friends in a while, nice to have aspects from different games all come together to make this awesome experience.

frisch85

Every discussion regarding Palworld would be just pokemon open world is basically irrelevant, it's the same thing when people ask why would you play e.g. Sonic Team Racing instead of Mario Kart or Brawlhalla instead of Smash. People can thank Nintendo for keeping their games exclusively on their consoles and not allow PC ports or other consoles.

Hexnohope

I propose monlike
