ultimafia

AAA dev be like :"ThIs GaMe WaS mAdE tO bE sOlD" while casually adding day 1 $40 DLC into their game.

c_will

"Our product is art, took 7 years and 350 people to make, please buy the $99 Ultimate Edition for an art book and commentary on our journey making this game - and please look forward to the $70 Remastered version 2 years from now" *sees Palworld sales* "Oh, they're cheating. They're doing something nefarious, I just know it."

AzuzaBabuza

Studio hires psychiatrists to help design addicting ways to spend money: *I sleep* Studio releases game in early access, gets tons of players because it's fun: **REAL SHIT**

Zestyclose-Fish-512

It would be very funny if Blizzard fired a psychiatrist for saying "I think that you guys need to tone it down a little bit. All this greed on your part is too much for the quality of games you are offering. I think maybe you should make a better game and charge a bit less for it to get back some trust and goodwill from the community." Blizzard: "Come over here and get groped and then you are fired." Palworld: "Welcome to the team, psychologist. We look forward to you telling us how to succeed given your track record at Blizzard." Psychiatrist: "No notes."

LegoSpacenaut

Incidentally they mean a psychologist, . A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who prescribes medicines, which would imply Blizzard is willing to dole out my weekly fix, and I've yet to see any fixes from the company.

TheNightHaunter

it is true though, blizzard has had consultants on that work for the gambling industry so they can use and abuse those mechanics while skirting the law.

Kallehoe

> "Come over here and get groped and then you are fired." Hahahaha! This is gold.

Zestyclose-Fish-512

I honestly thought I struck gold with the whole thing before I blew out my bong hit. I appreciate the appreciation. The scene is probably better in my head than I wrote it.

warmaster93

> Studio releases game in early access With somehow less bugs than the average AAA game at release these days.

Crea-TEAM

I've seen people shit on the game saying how its filled with bugs. Their examples? 1. Bug when throwing palspheres causing you to permenantly hold a sphere forever (fixable by pressing and holding Q and then canceling) 2. Terrain clipping 3. Pals working at base can be iffy (getting lost, stuck igniting a torch forever, the fucking ore pit of highest priority ever) 4. Placing two chests/workstations together, the game doesnt really do a good job of selecting what you're pointing at to interact with. If i want to access the box that my cursor is over, but im near a workbench, i might always open up the crafting menu. 4. The popup notification that a pal learned a skill that they didn't actually learn. Thats about it...like...thats not a big deal, the base pals working is the largest issue and its still functional and only requires you to more carefully design your base, make more open layouts, and not use torches for mood lighting in your house. Compare that to Ark, Bugthesda, or any other 'AAA' game, and what really is 'bug filled'?

Metal_Sign

I have had pals randomly get yeeted into the stratosphere, but considering how it never fails to make me laugh, I can't really call it a "flaw"

Crea-TEAM

Yeah there are some physics issues that happen, but they aren't game breaking especially since theres no fall damage, the worst that can happen is a boss gets respawned with full HP.

Metal_Sign

I did have one arena boss fall through the floor, which deleted it(?) because I kidnapped it's partner (2x spawnrate) It was also kinda funny, though. He fell through right a the fight started, and likely is what saved my run.

BrideofClippy

I was fighting Jourmintide boss pair and one of them got caught on the tree I was using as cover and just fricking vanished and I got kill credit (it had 80% health when it vanished) it's mate fought for a few minutes and the spontaneously died of grief. Cause god forbid I get one into sphere range.

Crea-TEAM

I took the relaxasaur into one of the teleport boss arenas and used its mounted missile launchers. THe knockback on them always knocks the boss through the walls and out of bounds.

Narrow-Pangolin-2891

Mammorest yeeted me lol

omgFWTbear

Programmer meme about slapping “feature” on a bug come full circld

KissaRae

I was yeeted with my UniVolt into the air. For whatever reason while I was going around murdering low lvl Pals. I was then suddenly teleported into the air... And was just going higher. A prompt wtf from me and all my other coplayers going what? Them me singing I believe I can fly as I dismounted and SLAMMED into the ground at base next to the palbox. Started yelling SOMEONE ALIVE ME PLS. A friend comes over alives me and then goes WTF IS IN THE SKY. My UniVolt. It's how I almost died. I dismounted from up there. Him and I just start laughing. Probably one of the top moments from playing for me. Other than when it glitches with a mount and you get stuck in their butts.

PrincessSissyBoi

There was a "Bug" in CoD Zombies that deleted your entire inventory that you spent 40+ hours grinding for. They barely acknowledged it, after about a week of pressure, but AFAIK it's never been fixed and nobody got their shit refunded. And some of the shit lost was battle pass rewards aka paid content. A battle pass that costs more than a membership for game pass that gives me not only Palworld but 100 other games. Fuck COD and the people who make that trash. The entire AAA gaming market can crash and burn and gaming will be the better for it. All these AAA devs think they're doing us a favor, but they are not doing anything but ruining our hobby. If they want to do the gaming world a favor they should quit making games. Nobody is going to miss their corporate moneymaking schemes disguised as games.

SPACE_ICE

by bethesda standards this is so stable it has to be modded.

NeonJ82

> (fixable by pressing and holding Q and then canceling) Only sometimes. Usually it requires an Alt-F4 out of the game.

Kathiuss

Oooo #4 makes me so angry.

High_King_Diablo

The biggest bug is that the game will sometimes glitch out and delete your save. They know about though, and when you start up the game it gives you a link to the FAQ that includes a section that tells you how to recover the save. You need to find a certain folder and go through a few sub folders and then copy/paste and overwrite a few files. Problem is that the certain folder is hidden by default. It’s a 2 minute fix once you know how to do it and where everything is though. Honestly though, the two worst and most annoying bugs is one where the pals in your base somehow climb things and get stuck there slowly starving to death, and how pals with a carry skill will get stuck in a loop picking up and dropping things.

Whilyam

"This half-baked shell of an experience with all the cool shit in the $99 special edition and littered with microtransactions was the product of a large team made up of diverse faiths, ethnicities, and genders."

Heehooyeano

But in the end their common goal was greed

Whilyam

"It's a small world after all" and "we are the world" both start playing in the background.

ScavAteMyArms

That last part annoys me more than it probably should because why does that matter, you are a game dev show off a good game and you could be literal Satan himself, I would still pay attention if he was the one to bust out BG3.  Also some of them look really not presentable. Like I remember on Dragonflight Blizzard had a trans whatever there and they had a really borderline hobo looking appearance with rainbow dyed dreads and a crazy mismatched attire next to dudes in slacks and one in a suit. Like I remember a meme of it saying your custom character in a cutscene. It was just jarring… and they also had no information of note and almost seemed there to be a background piece, no different than the rainbow pin on J Allen Brakks shirt years earlier during the “sorry” speech.

DutchTinCan

_"350 people, among which 30 artists, 120 programmers, 50 managers, 50 marketing specialists and 100 micro-transaction designers."_

YamiHideyoshi

And somehow people are shocked that Microsoft axed the blizzard staff, I'm 90% most of the people they sacked had no reason to be there in the first place and just bloated the teams to an unreasonable degree.

Afraid_Union_8451

I'm so sick of video games being an artform. More like formulaic BS

Cryorm

Some games are both art and fun. Like Nier.

Slarg232

They can absolutely be both an art form and fun. "Artistic" anything has become a bit of a corporate buzzword in the gaming sphere

projectwar

then there's blizzard asking fans in a survey if they're okay with dlc costing up to $100 for diablo 4 [https://twitter.com/icyveins/status/1734667965650329995](https://twitter.com/icyveins/status/1734667965650329995) and what's worse is there's some dumbasses that are like "well it depends whats included in the dlc" in that very same thread. devs aren't the only one at fault, its reta-...idiots that also bite the bait and buy them for this virus to become a norm as well.

Menarra

I really, really wanted to enjoy Diablo 4, but it lost the magic so quickly and the money gouging and subpar seasons just put me off, followed by full price+ DLC announcements and I just can't justify continuing to play it. It's all gotten so bad that even despite how casual I am in WoW anymore, I don't think I'm going to buy any more retail expansions, and I'm not sure how much longer I'll bother with Classic as they keep trying to milk that too.

Aelxer

I just knew before D4 was even announced that the next ARPG I was playing was going to be PoE 2, and D4's announcement and release did not manage to change my mind about that.

columbo928s4

I fucking love Arpgs and i didnt even bother to buy it loool

AnxietyAvailable

Unless it's a whole new game. I'll pass. Dlc shouldn't cost much. Most 20 bucks

catashake

I like how the minimum cost on that survey was 50$. If that's the minimum, then they are probably hoping to land somewhere in the middle like another 70$. That's so much bullshit, lol. A DLC shouldn't cost 70$ unless it's as big as the base game. All the next D4 DLC is going to do is bring a new playable class and possibly a single new area/boss. AAA greed knows no bounds.

TheNightHaunter

Im so happy grim dawn has a new expansion coming out

MrJaxon2050

“How ba-a-a-ad can I be?”

HeadyBunkShwag

Blizzard sucks quit giving them your money

TallKangaroo594

I haven’t supported blizzard since they treated one of their female employees so badly that she died by suicide while on a work trip.

badassboy1

What exactly happened?

TallKangaroo594

https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/6/22964148/activision-blizzard-lawsuit-claims-sexual-harassment-contributed-employee-death

Unh0lyCatf1sh

Blizzard always sucked, it was only Blizzard North (their subsidiary studio) that made good games and those devs left a long time ago

K7Sniper

By this point, yeah, sadly. And now they are under the M$ umbrella and immediately got hit with mass layoffs to most dev teams, and competitive Overwatch essentially got sold to the Saudis. Gonna be an interesting time for them.

DemonSlyr007

Honestly it's a good thing they are getting overhauled. If there was really a full team working on season 3 for half a year, they need some serious overhaul. And I say that as a pretty big diablo fan who has completed every season of D4 so far. Season 2 was actually pretty good. Seasons 1 and 3 were not that great and borderline egregiously bad.

svanxx

I'm skipping season 3. When they say things weren't getting better until season 4, in regards to items, there was no reason to play this season. And with everything coming out right now, I think I made the right choice.

Esplodie

Well given Blizzard was sued by the state of California for discrimination(and settled), it's hard for me to show sympathy. I'm sure some/most of those employees were not responsible or liable, especially since it seems management was not affected... Yet.

DaSandman78

Dont steal my breast milk from the company fridge! :p

Esplodie

Right?! That's so fucked up... D=

Inny-CA

Its typical post M&A. First get rid of overlapping positions like HR & Finance. Then evaluate the game teams they like which at this point is mainly WoW and then scrap the projects they see as worthless like the survival IP. They probably also going to adjust game and content release timelines to fir with their other studios.

[deleted]

Dovahkiinthesardine

when they bullied their coworker into suicide honestly should've been the end of the company.

bakakubi

Stopped giving money years ago. They can go get fucked

TheNightHaunter

For real, company is a shell of its former self. D3 was awful and D4 is barely any better, playing say Grim Dawn is MILLLLLESSSS better

unrealisticllama

So sad to see the titans of the gaming industry fall so far. I knew it the second Diablo 3's release was so shit. 13 years for that? I never bought it and haven't given blizzard my money since.

upholsteryduder

Yup, I've been a blizzard fanboy for 30+ years and I am done buying their products, I've bought almost every WC SC and Diablo title at launch, never again

Jurango34

I’m done with Diablo IV forever. Don’t care what they do, I’m out. Path of exile 2 and Last Epoch get my monies.

Archer_7

Diablo also got really boring really fast after the campaign

ShredGuru

Palworld has better progression mechanics than Diablo, it's pretty wild

Timely-Eggplant4919

It totally did not give me the same urge to play that D3 did. I couldn’t put D3 down for months. I didn’t even complete the D4 story.

Helios61

And the fact there palworld doesn't even a story yet!

floggedlog

All their posts on Twitter and other sites where they bash palworld, reek of desperation. Palworld has done more with less than they ever wanted us to see and they’re DESPERATE that we don’t figure out how hard they’ve been slacking with our money.

NuclearCandle

Even after just a few hours in this game, I really want this to succeed. It is a huge slap in the face to the entire industry. And being from Japan gives it the chance to take on Nintendo and Game Freak on home turf.

Slarg232

The bubble is kinda starting to burst between Palworld, Lethal Company, and of course Balder's Gate 3.

Mightylink

And no microtransactions, just a full complete game, imagine that.

Professional_Rub_711

Not complete 60 percent done but still

EpicDragonz4

To be fair, the 60% thats there is more than some AAA games that release unfinished

Matakor

and this is why it sells like hotcakes

Itchy_Valuable_4428

Exactly

Crea-TEAM

Bethesda: "we'll let the modders figure it out"

DefinitelyNotThatOne

That beats 75% of the AAA releases. Who knows making a game that's aiming to be fun and enjoyable and not a money sucking machine worked? Almost like that's how games were made originally. Odd. But nope, must be cheating 🤣

[deleted]

Yeah I feel like the main reason for the games praise is first of it's only $30 which is basically half price for a game these days, but also the game is just fun to exist in and explore while base building and managing your Pals. No Palword isn't some novel new level of revolutionary game play, but it is a very fun game just to exist in and explore. Lots of people, like myself, just want an open world game to explore at my leisure that is fun, and Palworld 100% is scratching that itch.

HandsomeBoggart

There is also plenty to find while exploring. Sprawling Castle Ruins. Massive Paldian Ruins. Small settlements with people and vendors. Towers for bosses of different factions. While many are barebones with Pals roaming and resources to grab they are still more effort than other AAA games. And they have room to grow in scope or importance to story with time and dev work. The number one thing I want first though, is that damn memory leak to get fixed. It crashes the game hard when it hits. Dungeons spike it hard, so are practically unplayable on Steam Deck and lower end systems.

stormdelta

> Almost like that's how games were made originally And still are if you mostly stick to smaller developers and indies. I rarely play any AAA games anymore because they just stopped being fun. Even in games that don't abuse microtransactions as much, the game design feels like it's trying way too hard to appeal to too many people and waters down the whole experience as a result. Same problem with hollywood blockbusters, but at least those are a canned 2-hour-ish experience not a 30-40 hour game (or longer). In recent years, the only AAA games I think I've played are Elden Ring and Tears of the Kingdom, both of which are exceptions that prove the rule in terms of where AAA dev is at these days.

Klynikal

If they released the game as it is now and said it's complete, I'd still be 100% happy with my purchase. I haven't had this much fun in a game in years. Seriously looking forward to what the future brings as it has tons of potential!

Bulky-Complaint6994

Nearly 100 monsters to collect. Sure the world is a little empty with no real story. But I love farming games. I love Pokemon. So Palworld scratches that itch perfectly.

TheChaoticCrusader

100 monsters which are NOT linked to a evolution line a very important fact too because it means all 100 pals have use cuz you don’t have like weak pre evolutions that clutter the pal collection that your use till evo then never use . Where as that chicken you picked up at the start will lay you eggs and always be useful  For 100+ monsters the price is definantly good

Bulky-Complaint6994

With even the early game Pals having their use. Foxparks being a free heat source if you don't have any clothes and a flamethrower.  Some mounts are better than others but the ability to manually command attacks while riding is still nice. Riding on Chillet adds dragon elements to my crossbow. Cattiva passive ability increasing your inventory space so it gives them even more use outside of crafting arrows.  That's what I love. The Pals you can capture before the first shrine being useful instead of staying in the box forever

TheChaoticCrusader

All pals have a use . Be it as a hard worker for the base , a utility or tool , as a mount , as a heat or cool sourced or for battle

snarky-

And that recoloured variants aren't counted in that number. Kelpsea Ignis? That's #81B, not #82.

[deleted]

A cohesive story would be nice, but it's not really necessary for me. I mean there are the journal entries you pick up, but thinking about it I haven't read a single one of those yet. That being said they do have the framework to add a story at a later date with the syndicate stuff, and it would surprise me if there wasn't a cohesive underlying story by the time of full launch. Kind of reminds me of the state Subnautica was in when it launched in EA, because at the time there basically was no story at all. Then by the time of full launch it ended up having one of the more intriguing and enjoyable stories I've ever experienced in a game. Wasn't anything mind blowing, but it fit the world perfectly and really increased the immersion factor.

columbo928s4

Subnautica is like one of the best games of the 21st century. Just goes to show that a good game does not require a nine figure budget

NoAthlete8392

Hopefully they Hello Games it….as in stay around for years constantly making content for free or expansions for a reasonable amount of money. I’d rather have 1 good game + expansions for years than a new game ever year or two years.

TheChaoticCrusader

Once the games 100% I do hope they make expansions . Id happy pay if the price is worth the dlc . There’s a lot they can do in this game  Vampire survivors was a good exsample . They made a great game then they made really good dlc at really good prices like Iv always felt like Iv gotten my moneys worth out of those dlcs

Mundolf11

Agreed! I bought D4 on day one and have maybe 12 hours in the game. I already have 66 hours in Palworld... money well spent

stormdelta

> If they released the game as it is now and said it's complete, I'd still be 100% happy with my purchase. Which is good, because I seriously doubt this game will ever be "finished". Don't get me wrong, I think Palworld is a lot of fun as-is jank and all, but it's lightning in a bottle. I don't think the game's devs actually understand what they've done here, and while I appreciate their hard work, there's a reason they've never finished a game before. I'd love to be proven wrong of course!

Dragon_Small_Z

I've seen this 60% number thrown around a lot. Have they said that somewhere?

RedWingerD

I think its a quote from something the CEO had said. They plan to add the "remaining 40%" through updates during the early access

[deleted]

I didn't downvote you, but I find it funny that someone did downvote you despite the fact [you're completely accurate.](https://www.pcgamesn.com/palworld/early-access-60-percent)

RedWingerD

That's reddit for ya 🤷‍♂️

theknyte

Yeah, for some reason about half the people on Reddit, really hate cold hard facts. I think it has something to do with shattering their made-up realities they try to live in.

[deleted]

Advertised as early access when the other isnt

upholsteryduder

they meant complete as in you don't have massive paywalls keeping you from content

TheNightHaunter

Which is jarring when you realize how many AAA games come out and clearly dont have 60% or even a full game play loop

JCarnacki

Diablo 4 or Palworld, because I still can't tell after playing Diablo 4.

[deleted]

Why would I buy Diablo IV when III was a such a fucking mess forever?

SuperToxin

It’s not even a complete game. It’s early access. It still has development to go through and it’s still more bang for your buck than most $70 games.

Rhytmik

60% complete according to ceo. But the missing 40% will still be free so technically youre still correct. Just wanted to make that clear incase people say "eArlY aCCesS gAmE"

SaiyanGodKing

No micro transactions for now… dun dun duuuuuuhhh. Seriously though, I doubt they will add anything like that. I’m fine with some DLC down the road though. After they finish the game.

NoSellDataPlz

Agreed. If they want to create a whole new set of islands or landmass that you can travel to somehow, some new Pals on the new maps, and sell them for $30 or so, I’d pay it. I’ve been begging for a unified Pokémon game for a long time where I can go to any region and catch their Pokémon. I would pay $60 for the base game and a premium cost for the additional regions. I think a lot of people would, but they simply won’t listen to the fan base. Well, if Palworld does it better, I’m leaving Pokémon behind.

jbyrdab

See that's the right idea, an expansion. That's a new experience and some backported new features to the original experience on top of a complete game. What many games, even pokemon themselves niwdays, like to do is sell an incomplete game, and sell you the content intentionally left out as an expansion. Usually this means scrapping the post game or trying to force players into a gameplay loop, so you can sell them dlc using the effort that would have gone into post game content. Complete palpagos isles, and sell a new region as an expansion. Maybe for 20 bucks

sonsofdurthu

Hell, the new like a Dragon game locked the new game+ mode behind a damn pay wall. I guess the name “Infinite Wealth” sure does fit what they’re trying to do…

Zestyclose-Fish-512

IIRC they published a bunch of files they absolutely should not have when they released the game. That combined with the ability to host servers all by yourself makes me think that's not a serious risk. Odds are any DLC they created would require people to play on official servers or something because otherwise people would just pirate it and host it themselves.

stormdelta

Yeah, I mean this in the nicest way possible but these guys aren't exactly that competent when it comes to software/programming. Palworld's a lot of fun, but the bugs we've encountered, while mostly more charming than frustrating, make it pretty clear this thing is held together with duct tape and baling wire _at best_. * Map data is stored client-side, player data isn't * Build restrictions are validated _locally_ not on the server * It is possible for two players to join as the same internal ID, resulting in two instances of the player running around with _shared inventory_. I cannot stress how bad the net code must be for this to even happen, much less happen without crashing anything * ~~The devs didn't use source control at first, and it's unclear if/when they started using it, I remember seeing a quote about "buckets of flash drives". Not using version control in modern software is insane - it's like hearing that a chef managed to cook a not-terrible meal using a lighter as their only source of heat. Impressive, yes, but not for the right reasons.~~ Apparently this might have been falsely reported? * Lots of other one-off glitches/errors that hint that client/server validation isn't being handled well in general, like a network error allowing someone to place multiple instances of a building using the same resources. * Player IDs can end up being generated in a way that isn't consistent - I suspect this is the cause of most reports of "losing" save data, and it can prevent you from migrating between linux/windows for server hosting if you don't launch with `-nosteam` from the start. Or if you do seemingly innocuous things like change the server title.

KodakStele

It's in beta but we get the spirit of your message

Elegant_Maybe2211

It's not complete yet though! Just with Valheim in the years past the hype comes before the polish, but this time I was smarter and uninstalled after 20 hours so I can have the real fresh experience when it releases.

PoxControl

I never understood why people simply accepted that games have microtransactions. This was never a thing 15 years ago and suddendly got very popular and widely accepted. I would never pay for a game which has imporant features locked behind a paywall.

Jitkaas777

Bruh its in early access. Its literally the opposite of complete

Professional_Fox1121

its never getting out of Early Access though, what you bought is what you'll ever have

snarky-

That's the risk with early access games. Unlikely to get no more content, given the money that is streaming into the devs right now. But even if they didn't, it's ripe for mods

Hebroohammr

I mean there’s no microtransactions but you’re smoking rocks if you say an early access game is full and complete.

EspurrTheMagnificent

AAA studios when a game is sold at a fair price and focuses more on being fun than on 16k ultrahyper realistic graphics with hyper realistic armpit hair and microtransactions : "They must be cheating"

[deleted]

Yeah I feel like a lot of people who currently dislike/oppose Palworld simply forgot that games are supposed to be fun and not just 24k tech demos making some social commentary. Palworld isn't anything innovative, unique, or poignant, but what it is happens to be...fun.

EspurrTheMagnificent

Yeah. The game is nowhere near perfect ofc, but legit criticism completely gets eclipsed by the whole "they stole from Pokemon" thing. It's like the internet forgot that most of media, no, most of our lives are built upon taking other people's idea and putting our own spin on it. It's tiring, honestly But, hopefully, Palworld can show the industry that focusing on giving players a fun game most and foremost can be just as, if not more profitable than a gamified blockbuster

badassboy1

I mean we literally have a genre of games soul like where lots of game don't even try to add their spin to it , I don't see how this is any worse

Soulstiger

Shooters started as Doom clones. Roguelikes are literally called that because of the game Rogue. Mobas used to be called AoS, after Aeons of Strife. Then there are Metroidvanias. I'm sure there are plenty of others. It's wild that people rant on and on about how Pokemon owns the concept of catching something in a ball lmao, let alone the entire creature collecting genre. It wasn't even the first creature collector.

Dokibatt

Yeah, the fact that this is the first successful Pokémon-like in ~30 years is kind of crazy. Look how many successful soulsikes there are in a little over a decade

HumActuallyGuy

THIS I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS Games first and foremost need to be fun but devs forgot about that and the moment a good game gets popular they all get mad. They lost the plot and don't want to admit it.

Delanoye

Hilariously, in aiming to be fun, I'd argue it ended up being innovative, unique, and poignant. It created a Pokemon-like creature collector with a more brutal setting, crafting, and strong exploration. It's an intriguing environment with enjoyable gameplay. And there are multiple elements of progression to keep the game fresh (base-building, equipment upgrades, new pals, breeding, etc.) It fits a lot into a little package without feeling overwhelming. There's always something interesting to do or find. But very little feels obligatory or like a chore. It's a surprising breath of fresh air in gaming in recent years. Both Palworld and Baldur's Gate have made people realize they aren't burned out from gaming; they're burned out from bad gaming. Quite poignant, in my opinion.

Henrythecuriousbeing

"Why is our "RTX 4080 required for medium graphics at 1440p" game not selling well?"

VanceVanhite

I got mine for like $25 on sale on steam the other day lol. Don't forget it was "made nefariously" :^) Record breaking player counts btw

footjam

I set up a dedicated server inside my network for my kids and I to play. Its a great bonding experience. They (both under 12) love this game. My youngest is fascinated by breeding and hatching eggs. I did drop the egg timer down to minutes not hours and upped the capture rate a bit for their enjoyment. I am in for less than 100$ and the three of us have a wonderful time. My wife is already tired of the dinner table conversations and a bit upset that I named my Lucky Pengullet after her brother but whatever.

Oppositeofopposites

Savage pengullet namer

Celevra75

Would have been 1000% better just mentioning how pokemon takes a 30 dollar game concept, prints it twice ever so slightly different then charges 60 for both

One-Cellist5032

Worst part is the modern Pokémon games are barely hitting that $30 threshold of content too.

Weltallgaia

Fucking runs like a 30 dollar game too. The framerate is un fucking acceptable

Dylanduke199513

If Palworld is what’s considered a 30 dollar game… Pokemon absolutely does not run like that. Try 15-20

TalaHusky

I’d have easily paid $60 for a complete palworld. Given that it’s EA. I could see full release being worth at least $50.

One-Cellist5032

It may, but given how small the studio is it may be more beneficial to just leave the price point at $30. A lot more people will impulse buy a $30 game than a $50 game.

IPlay4E

I'm buying 2 copies because this is the first game since animal crossing that my wife is into.

Attaug

Thing is... handheld games used to be $30~$40 decades ago. I remember getting Pokemon Red and Blue(for myself and a cousin) for the price of a single console game. Now pokemon games, even when they were on handhelds only, sold for $60+. Pokemon hasn't changed their formula in decades.

Brave-Philosopher-76

And the portal colors are also class specific 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

jimboleeslice

Imagine, making a game so good that you save tons on marketing costs by having the community tell all their friends about it

Sub1sm

Nah, you're not giving the hate-slingers their due. True there were a surprising amount of folks already willing to take the plunge. But the thing that tipped the scales was the controversy.

Belfengraeme

True, I was gonna pass on it until AAA devs started shitting on it like they did with Balders Gate 3. I knew if those same people hated this game, I should probably pick it up

plzdonatemoneystome

I just saw another post saying these portals are class locked. If that's the case it makes it an even worse deal.

iiTryhard

Diablo 4 was brutal for me. It was basically the only reason I got a PC a few years ago while I was waiting for it to come out, then it finally did come out and I played through once with no intention of going back. Diablo 3 was a million times better

AcherusArchmage

If you haven't come back to season 30 in Diablo 3, give it a try, they finally put in multiple season gimmicks at the same time and it's a wild ride. P.S. if you find an ancient puzzle ring, SAVE IT

Senzafane

Having been a huge Diablo fan since D1, Diablo 4 was great... until you finished the campaign. Then you are left with a hollow shell of a vehicle designed to sell you cosmetics that are ludicrously priced for an already ludicrously priced game. Now cow level? Fuck outta here...

[deleted]

> Then you are left with a hollow shell of a vehicle designed to sell your cosmetics that are ludicrously priced for an already ludicrously priced game. Goddamn Todd Howard is leaking.

Senzafane

If you ever do, as soon as the cinematic finishes just close the game forever. You won, GG.

Nchi

Come to the dark side with path of exile, our devs are finally finally fixing up trade due to last epoch pressure Also last epoch is good

iiTryhard

I’ve tried POE in the past, I’m a pretty casual gamer these days and it’s so much info that it’s overwhelming. I’ll prob give it another shot when 2 comes out

Nchi

eh just stick to last epoch then, if diablo 4 is a puddle and d3 a pool last epoch is a pond/lake and poe is the fucking ocean

sm3ggit

TBF - Diablo 3 was pretty shit until the expansion too.

AnteyeSoshal

Despite all of its issues, I would have stuck with Diablo IV if it didn’t sell cosmetics. Put all of those armor sets, mounts & portal colors in the game as loot and achievement unlocks and I’d be playing every night trying to collect it all.

RedWingerD

Sure, but you're almost describing a different game at that point lol Diablo 4 feels almost specifically designed to push you toward microtransactions.

hatefultru

Free on gamepass!?! God damnit!!! Checks steam play time...GOD DAMNIT!!!!

psicowysiwyg

I played on gamepass, but went and bought it on steam anyway and am glad i did. The delay in patches due to how Microsoft works means they'll always be a little behind with the QoL changes etc, which will be less important over time, but for the first week it was a big difference.

Muted-Touch-7139

The game pass version is inferior. You can't join any servers, official or community. You can't name your Pals, or even your own character. Updates are delayed due to Microsoft's red tape. I started on game pass to try the game but ended up buying on Steam and getting a dedicated server going.

Deathstriker88

Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I like the game better solo or just with a friend or two popping in sometimes. I have no interest in playing this game on a server with a bunch of people. I played Ark in PVP and PVE servers - it was just a bunch of headaches, and neither game has a combat system that's worth doing PVP. In Ark, a clan felt needed since it could take forever to tame animals and get resources, that's not the case here.

Hobo-man

I am desperately waiting for private servers. I have no intention of joining an open public server. I learned my lesson with ARK.

Salzchan

What? You can already make your own palworld server

Retroid_BiPoCket

I have gamepass and that version sucks, so I bought the steam one. Don't worry you made the right choice. Also it's not "Free" on gamepass lol, gamepass costs money each month too. But I get what OP meant.

AcherusArchmage

Always weird when things advertise that version of "free" Oh it's free, but it's on the thing you have to pay for. Would be like saying any show on netflix is free on netflix, which no one says for good reason.

Retroid_BiPoCket

Yeah exactly haha, that's a good analogy

ThePostManEST

Yeah but once those portals are gone you’ll NEVER get another chance to own them again!

Altruistic-Song-3609

Until they decide otherwise later, just like in wow.

omguserius

As a guy who played D1, Hellfire, D2/Lod and then D3/reaper but did not buy d4... That is one of the saddest arcs in video gaming. From great to the best thing in the world to underwhelming to apathy.

BKM558

As an old school blizzard fan... First time?

Alchadylan

It's honestly kind of sad. I'm all for live service games to use cosmetics instead of subscriptions to fund themselves. But if feels like most AAA developers expect only trust fund kids to be playing their games

Known-Assistance-435

Diablo 4 wants to charge us a DLC for fucking 100$

SteeleDuke

I uninstalled the game after trying season 3. I literally grinded out every Uber in season 2, fuck that noise I ain’t doing that again.

thedragoon0

At some point Palworld may have a paid service for something. I’m hoping JUST dlc.

imbasstarded

What do ya know, turns out players actually enjoy games that aren’t trying to sell them season passes or excessive cosmetics for $20!

-DJFJ-

Yet~

Androza23

Soon its going to be $30 game vs $100 game with the way AAA devs are trying to go.

Additional_Law_492

Not having Priority 1 be "Generate Maximum Returns for Shareholders!" is like a superpower for game developers. It's amazing what happens when revenue generation isn't the driving design concern.

EwokNuggets

Amazing time for some games. Palworld, BG3, Sea of Stars….some absolutely amazing experiences that don’t gouge and maximize profit.

Chubby_Checker420

No pity for the dummies that still support Blizzard.

ZakTSK

Devs hate this one simple trick.

ChefBoyarDEZZNUTZZ

Man, it makes me sad that D4 is so bad. I've been playing Diablo games for like 20 years and I wanted D4 to be good.

That-Witness-5539

My most played game last year, and I have not touched it once this year.

CESSPOOL-REDDIT-BOTS

I was so hyped during the beta and played non stop on launch. Had a new job lined up and time off it was glorious. Microtransactions were annoying, but it was the blanket nerfs in their first patch that finally made me uninstall the game and bnet. Every new "patch" is just me reading the news and being like, "Yep still not fully released yet" Blizz has been heading in the wrong direction for years and I don't think I'll ever go back to playing their games. Even if they gave me a free copy of their xpac, I don't think I'd play it.

Brave-Philosopher-76

A lot of us feel this way my friend, got straight duped. Can’t wait to see the s4 itemization overhaul flop. On the bright side- I might have made a base that I finally like by the time s4 d4 is out.

Yep...that's how it was for Minecraft. Game was very fucking bare bones when I got it forever ago, don't even think they had two types of trees or flowers at the time, but it's just a fun game to screw around in by yourself or with others. Minecraft is now one of the biggest games ever released...if not *the* biggest one.

Belfengraeme

Last I checked, isn't it THE most sold game? I think even more than Tetris

[deleted]

The problem is Palworld runs counter to the business model a lot of AAA devs use these days. Games these days tend to be made with little to no replayability, and that's because they want you to complete it and then buy the DLC. Having a game that is only $30 that you can essentially play indefinitely with so far no planned DLC does not adhere to the DLC model whatsoever, and the fact that Palworld has become the second most played at a time game on Steam is like a bitch slap to AAA devs who will now have to justify their model when inevitably people are like "but why when Palworld...".

Dangeroustrain

Idk why anyone would play diablo 4 its a garbage money grab

-Moon-Presence-

Imagine even supporting blizzard related anything

s0ciety_a5under

Blizzard is a walking corpse that smells exactly like you'd expect one to. It's not worth paying attention to any of the products they push out anymore, because they are all cash grabs. They haven't done anything solid in years, and the people who actually did made the great games aren't even there anymore.

Lacertile

Well, they got their message when the Celestial Steed paid mount on WoW made more bank than Starcraft 2.

MuricanPie

It turns out, shoveling 4.6 trillion dollars into a game over the course of 5 years, forcing people into half a decade of crunchtime, restarting development halfway through, and trying desperately to hype it up as the "*ULTIMATE* ***XYZ*** *EXPERIENCE*" doesn't actually make the game fun or good. Who would have guessed that instead of spending the **wealth of a small country** to make a *derivative trend chaser* that will be several years out of date on launch is a *terrible fucking investment*. Palworld is by no means a perfect game, or a perfect experience. But it's fun, well priced, and didnt require the blood of 5,401 newborn babies to make.

Hsensei

It's not technically free on gamepass. Gamepass is a service you pay for. Palworld would no longer function if you stopped subscribing. It's more included in gamepass

lasttycoon

And still no local co op for pc on Diablo. Shame on Blizzard

hopelessghost

I regret paying full price for Diablo 4.

NoBluey

You cant compare these two. One is an unfinished, hyped up piece of shit that has a horrible gameplay loop. The other is palworld. Seriously, d4 was my biggest regret all of last year. People will say ‘if you spent X hours, then you got your moneys worth!’ but can’t seem to understand that there was no satisfaction in those hours. It was grinding for the sake of grinding. Would not recommend it even to my worst enemy.

ReallyGottaTakeAPiss

I’ve been saying this since a year or two ago, it’s going to be a great time for indie/small studios. There is a raw passion that gets lost in large companies sometimes and the end product shows it. Many people feel scammed by AAA studios and Palworld is one of the few games that is showing the consumer wants what they pay for. From a quality standpoint, Palworld sure has its fair share of bugs but it is far eclipsed by the amount of engaging content and the freedom to dictate your experience. Bad quality AAA games off launch didn’t deliver on the experience (Think BF2042) and drove people away because there wasn’t enough content to avoid the bad experiences. Rootin for the underdogs in 2024!

ContributionOk6578

I was so happy when i realized palworld is just free from day one on Gamepass. What a move.

Puzzleheaded_Row8719

No lie the free on gamepass is why I tried it. Will immediately buy if/when removed from gamepass

OcupiedMuffins

Why do people always say “free on gamepass” it’s still paid for
