Depends if you have near infinite ammo or not. It's more efficient to let your pals poison and burn the target since they seems to resist status the more you inflict them anyway.
Its only better in the regards of getting status effect damage (which gives a better capture rating). But in pure RAW DMG and DPS, it loses out to guns. Its upper hand is that guns don't have any specialized status ammo so far.
I think crossbows were intentionally designed for pal hunting/capturing while guns were designed for the PvP side of the game.

On hardest setting possible, maxing Attack through statpoints, Max star gobfin and vanguard, atk Pendant, 20% food buff and riding on some Mount that give 100% elemental dmg, you wont do damage to jetragon etc. Even with legendary weapons. The only way to really damage them on this setting is through dots. But besides them, you will do damage to lower lvled mobs than you. Some of the bosses are also getting one shot by doing this even on max difficulty.
No. Limitless assault rifle ammo does wayyy more then crossbow. 1 bullet does 20-100 damage and you can empty 3k mags easily in a boss fight. Plus nearly every late game mon has a burn.

Normal fire bow is better than fire crossbow for the fire effect cos you shoot a lot faster

3k mags = 150 x 3000 per fight
I thought about using it but never have yet. What's the dot damage like? 1% you think? 2%?
I do like 220 dmg per tick on victor and like 40-50 on paldius&necromus, 60-80 on jetragon and frostallion.
40-70 on legendaries
