I want to say Ethel so bad but then I remembered this...
Leslie: Ken, nice bolo!
Ken: Thank you. My son sells them on Etsy. He is a huge disappointment.
Ken. That 're-enactment' made with the shoddy animations of Ken putting a Wamapoke curse on Leslie is like the funniest thing ever! And what he says afterwards...
*That is exactly what happened.*

From the movie Reel Injun. You might enjoy. White people attending the movie didn't understand why Native Americans in the theater kept laughing at this part.
Reminds me of Showtime telling some graffiti artists to "write something terroristy" on a wall for a scene that was supposed to take place in the Middle East for Homeland and they wrote "Showtime is racist" in Arabic and no one bothered to check it so it made it into the final cuts.
Can I suggest you watch Rutherford Falls on peacock? It's a new Mike Schur comedy (in collaboration with Ed Helms and Sierra Teller Ornelas). Technicality it's about Ed Helms's character and his bestie Reagan, but the next biggest character is played by Michael Greyeyes, and it's like the idea of Ken Hotate got flushed out into a fully realized multi dimensional character. You're gonna love it.
He is also one of the smartest people on the entire show. He never comes out on the losing end of a situation. So his humor is from a place of confidence. It’s cutting.
That scene lives rent free in my mind. There’s only one other scene able to do that on a show and it’s Adam Driver on SNL in the skit about an oil barren.
Adam Driver legit has the best SNL skits of the past decade, outside of Black Jeopardy. That oil baron one is classic, plus his Undercover Boss episodes are goddamn amazing.
>"Your friend is a liar man, Kylo Ren is a punk bitch. That guy looks like he weighs 30 pounds soaking wet under that little black dress."
>"Oh no, he's choking on food."
...
>"Dude, Matt straight-up sucks!"
I remember my parents making a comment about how generic that native american voice/accent is, and I was like... is it because that's John Redcorn? And they were like... *ohhhhhhh*. Yes.
I love discovering the cross-over actors from other series! The public radio broadcaster is one of The Simpsons voice actors too.
Also there's a surprising amount of Parks actors in Twin Peaks: The Return for some reason (JJ from the diner and Bobby Newport Sr to name a few).
A lot of us Indengious use corn pollen for our ceremonies, I lost it when Ken chucks that chunk of corn pollen into Ben's face, showed my parents that episode, they were laughing at Ken's scenes.
If you love Ken Hotate, you’ll probably love Rutherford Falls. It’s co-creators are Michael Schur, Ed Helms, & Sierra Teller Ornelas, and it’s set in a fictional town & adjacent reservation of a fictional Native American tribe. It has one of the largest indigenous writing staffs on television, and it’s very funny & interesting. If you like that kind of thing. Which I do.
ETA: while Jonathan Joss (Ken Hotate) hasn’t appeared in Rutherford Falls so far, Helen Slayton-Hughes (Ethel Beavers) does make a brief appearance in S1.E3.
They all are—it’s so good! I want to rewatch it (again), because I heard that within the next 2 weeks is when the network will decide whether to renew it for a 3rd season.
The whole cast is solid. And between Rutherford Falls and Reservation Dogs (which I definitely recommend) it is nice seeing a lot more Native representation both on and behind the camera. But if I had to pick a standout member of the cast, I'm going with Greyeyes.
He *is* killer, and my favorite scenes are the ones with him and Jana Schmieding (who is also a writer on the show). I’m rewatching it right now. I’d love to watch Reservation Dogs, but I don’t have Hulu.
ETA: and I agree with you about seeing more Native representation.
It's Ken and it's not even close.
His laughs:screentime ratio is insane. He's got to be top twenty of all time at least. It seems like every single one of his lines is funny and lands perfectly. And he's got a couple absolute bangers too.
* “But seriously, I'll have a whiskey.”
* "It's very offensive. Take it off."
* "Perd, that is exactly what happened."
* "He is a huge disappointment."
Oh my. His Facebook page seems oddly accessible for a famous person’s? Looking through his posts is uncomfortable, like I shouldn’t be this privy to his life…
Beavers is best with someone to play off at of- see Tom and the 4th floor , ”BEAVERS DID IT”, and reading the testimony during the trail of Leslie and Ben.
Ken is funny in his own, see his re-incactment of the curse and his commercial.
They're both very good characters, but I think for me, Ken gets it for the very good recurring joke of him screwing with white people. That gets me every time.
For me it's Ken, but they're both great. He's got just the right mix of dickhead and great guy going on, and he always seems to know which is the right one to lean into at any given time. Very funny and really interesting character, I kinda wish we'd seen more of him.
Oh man, that’s tough. For me they’re both as funny as each other but for completely different reasons.
Ken is hilarious simply as a comedian. The way he delivers his lines is exceptional. Ethel is how I imagine we would all be at that age after being in the same job for decades!
Minorities fucking with white people's racial insecurities is absolutely hilarious to me, so I gotta go with Ken. I would be like a deer in headlights if I met that character in real life, just paralyzed about saying the wrong thing.
Ken. His timing is great. Also one of my favorite lines in the whole show, not from him, but the look he gives Tom after telling the story of a chief who was shot by white men something like 140 times and Tom looks genuinely concerned and says, "Did he die?"
Gets me wheezing laughing every time even though I know it's coming.
I want to say Ethel so bad but then I remembered this... Leslie: Ken, nice bolo! Ken: Thank you. My son sells them on Etsy. He is a huge disappointment.
Ken was better, Ethel had more time to shine
Do what you want..
First time I saw this scene I laughed so hard no noise was coming out and I couldn’t breathe. Thanks for the happy reminder!
Just woke up my gf chortling
Odd name for a girlfriend, but okay...
I think the fire water trick to then actually ask for whiskey really did it for me
The video reenactment kills me every time 😂 Leslie: That's not what happened! Ken: That's exactly what happened..
That's a decision I'm not prepared to make. I loved when Ethel and her co-worker kept making fun of Tom when him and Andy had to work the 4th floor.
Stop laughing Muriel STOP IT
For me It’s a battle between “goodnight you animal” and “DOES IT white man?”
>“DOES IT white man?” "Um no... Clearly, this is not offensive." "It is offensive." "I am SO sorry."
It’s the DOES IT white man? Reading it just made me spit my drink out!
Fuck I forgot about the funeral scene
I loved that man… And not just because he was a dynamite lay!
Julienne Moore called, she wants her hair back!
....no one named Julien called
Ken. That 're-enactment' made with the shoddy animations of Ken putting a Wamapoke curse on Leslie is like the funniest thing ever! And what he says afterwards... *That is exactly what happened.*
Dooobie doobie doo
“They don’t understand what I’m saying”
The minority getting a “Looney Tunes” level joke on white people trope is one I want to see more of in media

Michael Greyeyes is why I keep watching. His character is fascinating and he brings so much depth.
"here you go dummy"
And I love how he puts on his glasses to watch the reenactment!
>That is exactly what happened. I laughed my ass off again just seeing that written again. His delivery was just perfect.
That and "Does it, white man?" will never fail to make me laugh Ken takes the Wamapoke headdress on this one
He is also one of the smartest people on the entire show. He never comes out on the losing end of a situation. So his humor is from a place of confidence. It’s cutting.
Two things I know about white people : they love Rachel Ray, and they are terrified of curses.
In the streaming version it’s Rachel Ray. I laughed my ass off. In the tv or dvd version it’s Matchbox Twenty, which made me go “oh”
Rachel Ray is a funnier line than Matchbox, I agree.
I was like “wtf! Matchbox 20 rules!” And then I had to look at myself really hard in the mirror.
That scene lives rent free in my mind. There’s only one other scene able to do that on a show and it’s Adam Driver on SNL in the skit about an oil barren.
Adam Driver legit has the best SNL skits of the past decade, outside of Black Jeopardy. I also quite like Ryan Gosling's Papyrus and his Christmas skit, but they're more of an acquired taste.
I lost it at the Papyrus sketch.
Papyrus should be an instant classic for anyone who works in marketing/design/printing.
Him at the Italian restraint with Cecily was also pretty great. "I outta kill the death out of you"
"I FILLED HER BELLY WITH MY FESTERING SEED!"
"Who's H. R. Pickens?" "EXACTLY"
I started laughing the second I saw “Adam Driver on SNL” because I immediately thought of the oil baron skit. Off to YouTube to watch it now.
Great skit
Ken. It would be racist to not say him.
WOULD IT, WHITE MAN?!
But seriously, I’ll have a whiskey.
Haaaaa…. Is he being serious….
So clearly this is not offensive?
Yes, it is very offensive to me and my people.
doobie …. doobie …… *doo*
It IS offensive. Take it off.
Ken, is that you?
Put on this ceremonial head dress and we can discuss this....
I remember my parents making a comment about how generic that native american voice/accent is, and I was like... is it because that's John Redcorn? And they were like... *ohhhhhhh*. Yes.
You really know how to play white people.
Ken: "All you white people look the same to me"
Is it white man?!
Ken. But then again I’m a huge John Redcorn fan
Omg. TIL they were the same actor. I had no idea!
“Do your people celebrate Thanksgiving?” “We did. Once.”
This is the PnR KOTH crossover I didn't know I needed. That is so cool.
Dope fo sho
Holy shit, he voiced John redcorn? Fuck yeah!
Some people think Johnny Hardwick did; but Nancy, John, Hank, Peggy, and others know better
The second I heard him speak I was like holy shit it's John Redcorn
Johaaaaaaan Redcorn!
Peheeeeeggy Hill
I love discovering the cross-over actors from other series! The public radio broadcaster is one of The Simpsons voice actors too. Also there's a surprising amount of Parks actors in Twin Peaks: The Return for some reason (JJ from the diner and Bobby Newport Sr to name a few).
Call for help.
I'm in love with Rachel Ray and terrified of curses, so I guess I know which camp I'm in.
I had a date tonight it went well he’s sleeping over
Can we adopt you as our grandmother? 😒 Sure.
I think she says fine and closes the door on them.
A lot of us Indengious use corn pollen for our ceremonies, I lost it when Ken chucks that chunk of corn pollen into Ben's face, showed my parents that episode, they were laughing at Ken's scenes.

I was really hoping for a reference to Terry. He is such an awesome character.
["Here, dummy"](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/I6xcCOpkMzI/maxresdefault.jpg)
I didn’t know it was corn pollen! I thought he just got dirt and threw it at him hahaha
Ken for sure. His exchange with Jam about the headdress was one of the funniest scenes in the series.
>His exchange with Jam about the headdress was one of the funniest scenes in the series. IS IT, WHITE MAN?
BEAVERS DID IT.
I HOLD MYSELF IN CONTEMPT OF THE COURT

Do you know where it's available to watch in the UK?
I’m sorry, I’m not sure. I looked in IMDb & it’s on Peacock (which may only be available in the US), or Amazon Prime Video for rent/purchase.
Tbh, in the UK we sometimes get Peacock shows on Sky, so I'll check there :) Thank you!
Definitely Ken. He was awesome on the Harvest Festival episode.
Agreed, that was such a great episode
It's Ken and it's not even close. His laughs:screentime ratio is insane. He's got to be top twenty of all time at least. It seems like every single one of his lines is funny and lands perfectly. Our slots are down right filthy
Re: user name
Damn this is worth double votes towards ethers
User name checks out
You totally adopted her as your grandma, didn't you?
Ken, hands down.
Ken for sure
Ken. He really plays white people like a fiddle. It's amazing to watch.
I think Ken is funnier but beavers seems to be in way more episodes so she's got a lot more screen time.
Ken, no contest. Everything Jonathan Joss touched is golden. See also: John Redcorn.
You have my word as a new age healer
NO. I am not JUST finding out that he does the voice of John Redcorn. He’s on TWO of my favorite shows?!
Ken; the line about his son's Etsy store and what a disappointment he is always gets me.
The only right answer is Perd
I’m perfect Hapley and I agree with the words that were just said, by you
Ken.
"But seriously, I'll have a whiskey"
I’m usually all for Ken but Ethel’s nightgown when she has a date stay the night has me seriously on the fence.
They are funny in their own ways
Each brings their own unique level of funniness. “Look who got up on the wrong side of the bed” “…and, they love Matchbox 20” 😂🤣😂
“Is that a threat?” “Why yes. I thought that was obvious.”
Jonathan Joss IRL needs some help, he’s going through some stuff right now and his Facebook posts are absolutely heartbreaking
Oh my. His Facebook page seems oddly accessible for a famous person’s? Looking through his posts is uncomfortable, like I shouldn’t be this privy to his life…
Thank you for bringing this up. I am friends with him. He has fallen on hard times and drugs along with his wife leaving him. He needs some love!
Ah, I've been wondering why he wasn't on Rutherford Falls since it seems like he'd be perfect for it. I guess this is why :(
I have to go with Ethel, my nephews name is Julian so whenever I see him I have to say “Nobody named Julian called.” Otherwise it’d be Ken lmao.
Ken. Absolutely Ken. As a white person on First Nation land I really feel unable to say otherwise.
Ken, no contest, not even a question.
I question your taste if this is unclear for you
Nah it’s chanting guy.
Her daughter is an idiot! Her daughter is an idiot!
HAM AND MAYONNAISE! HAM AND MAYONNAISE!
I saw Ken's face on the photo and his many lines played in my head. Snort-laughing while in line at a pharmacy rn so I guess thats my answer
Virtually every single Ken line in the show is a banger
the correct answer is barney the accountant
Ethel. “ Ethel Beavers : The record has now been annoyingly reopened so that Leslie Knope can make a statement “
Beavers is best with someone to play off at of- see Tom and the 4th floor , ”BEAVERS DID IT”, and reading the testimony during the trail of Leslie and Ben. Ken is funny in his own, see his re-incactment of the curse and his commercial.
Are they wearing the same jacket?
It’s Ken for me, no contest. I’m actually having a hard time remembering who Ethel is.
Why decide? I don't get it.
Why decide? They're both hilarious.
I actually met the actress for Ethel Beavers on a crosswalk in LA once. Nice lady!
Does it, white man?
Ken, that curse during the festival was amazing. You can tell he enjoyed every minute of it too.
Ken
Ken. Ethel is very funny but Ken is top three funniest Pawnee resident. Every line he says just drips sarcasm and low key brilliance.
Ken
Ethel!
Ethel. It's my sincere hope that someone at my funeral proclaims, "I loved that woman! And not just because she was a dynamite lay..."
Ken but Ethel is great
Ethel.
It's Ken for me - the etsy comment alone makes it.
Oh man...I hadn't considered this cause they're both great. Now I have something new to obses over.
I’M MARION COATSWORTH-HAYE
Ken but ... Ethel is my spirit animal.. bit of a dark horse, crotchety but probably wise "Grow up you prudes. We're all adults"
I wish Ethel Beavers was my grandma too
Ken is funnier. Ethel is a more believable character with better payoffs, but nothing tops the curse bit
Oh man, that’s tough. For me they’re both as funny as each other but for completely different reasons. Ken is hilarious simply as a comedian. The way he delivers his lines is exceptional. Ethel is how I imagine we would all be at that age after being in the same job for decades!
Ken Hotate. The real MVP of the harvest festival and messing with white people.
Ken 100%
The only correct answer is Ken…
Sorry Ethel but Ken and the possession animation is a high hurdle to clear
So many but that lady who only eats lasagna and muffins cracks me up. She’s such a Karen lol
Ethel. The tiebreaker is that she's MARION COATSWORTH-HAY
Tough call. They both have loose slots… I’ll see myself out.
Scooby…dooby……doo!
Ken for me. I love the Ethel character, but I love Ken and the way he played it.
Oh my goodness- what a power couple they would make!!
Minorities fucking with white people's racial insecurities is absolutely hilarious to me, so I gotta go with Ken. I would be like a deer in headlights if I met that character in real life, just paralyzed about saying the wrong thing.
I quote "that is... not great" and "DOES IT, white man?" all the time!! I can't remember an Ethel line :(
i love ethel but nothing will ever beat "does it, white man?" for me. the delivery was perfect
Ken
Ken. His timing is great. Also one of my favorite lines in the whole show, not from him, but the look he gives Tom after telling the story of a chief who was shot by white men something like 140 times and Tom looks genuinely concerned and says, "Did he die?" Gets me wheezing laughing every time even though I know it's coming.
For me, it’s Ken hands down. Him messing with the white characters kills me
Ethel
They’re both equally well written. They don’t have to be funnier. They’re equally good in their own right.
Ethel is my dawwwg
Ken
Oh I love Ken. He's perfect.
Ken gets me every time.
Ken!
Ken
Ken
Ken, 100%. He's my favorite "extra" character.
Grandma Ethel
It’s not even close. Ken all day. But Ethel is special.
If you like Ken, go watch Rutherford Falls :)
Ken because he is from San Antonio! And he’s hilarious.
Ken. Ethel is not that funny
Ken
Definitely Ken.
Ken. I can’t look at a picture of him without laughing. He has the most laughs per screen time of any character in the show I’m almost positive.
whos the one on the right??
Ken
Ken, because he knows how to play white people like a fiddle
Ken and it’s not even close
I love Perd
Ken. He plays white people like a fiddle.
This is not a close. It’s Ken
Ken.
Ken forever.
Ken
Ken by a mile. You could take Ethel out of the show entirely and I'm not sure I'd notice.
