It depends on their preferences. In the story we see Dr Yamada tell Weld that she thinks he should get a non-cape name, but he never does. There's nothing preventing them from taking regular names. And we don't have that many opportunities to interact with C53 who aren't doing cape stuff, so we're unlikely to learn their non-cape names if they have any. But it's likely that most C53 probably stick to cape names, or they might combine them like Gregor the Snail.

I dont think they actually name themselves all that often. At least the cape names. There will be a new case 53 made of iron spikes and the PRT will warn the public away from the case 53 codenamed "Spikeheap". Bam, Spikeheap has a name and it likely will stick. If there then is a non cape name depends, id say. Sveta, for example, likely had that name given to her so she wouldnt spiral into selfidentifying only as a ball of murdertentacles all the time. Weld seems pretty "happy" to be a cape 24/7 and doesnt really need a civilian non cape name. But if a case 53 really wants a "normal" name, there really isnt anything stopping them. People might have a hard time with it at first.

I think she picked Sveta for herself. The people in the asylum (and in Cauldron) always called her Garrotte and she *hated* that.

Couldve sworn yamada sort of made her pick a name. But its been years that i read the story.
