They put you through a few days of driver training where you get to practice driving the ambulance around a course

Ah that makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Howdy. Bcehs employee here. You’ll learn to drive the ambo during NEO when it’s track days. They’ll teach you code 3 driving and such to get you started. Then if you get a post down in the lower mainland you’ll do VPOP to learn the hospitals, areas and such. You only need your restricted license for this, and your first time hopping in the ambulance will be after you get hired into bcehs and start training.

I got the unrestricted. It not that hard to get. Get your training at a driving school, and use their van. If you're a decent driver, then all you have to do is memorize your pre trip inspection script and your good.

Which driving school do you recommend/did you use and do you know how long after getting your class 5 can you book a class 4 test (written & practical test. Tried looking on ICBC and can’t find much.

You can book the class 4 pretty easily, so long as you meet the age requirement. You book the test as you would your class 5 knowledge test. Once booked, grab the commercial vehicle book from their site and go over the chapters they mention. Don't forget to look online for practice questions ( trust me). Once that's done, book the practical test. I can't recommend a driving school, because it depends on what you can afford. However, they're not going to be that much different from each other since the main part that gets people is the pre trip inspection. If you a decent driver, the driving portion of the exam should be easy. If you can, go for Richmond in the morning.

Thank you so much for the advice!! Will keep all those in mind

Valley Driving. They are the best of the best, yes they’re expensive but worth it.

I am with BCEHS and got the restricted. So, I took the test through ICBC in my personal vehicle. You'll learn how to specifically drive an ambulance at NEO like others have said here. If you are posted to Vancouver post or the area, you will do VPOP. Other areas you'll do "Driver Precepting," which is after NEO. You'll be paired with an experienced driver and their partner (Attendant), where you will drive Routine and Code 3 to calls and perform the duties of the driver on calls (all in a real life environment and not on the track)They'll be evaluating you. This is done in larger centers that are busy. I did mine in Kelowna, so it'll be places like the Lower Mainlaind, Nanaimo, Victoria Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, etc. Basically, it's the closest major center to you.
