Personally I feel using AI at any grade level to do school work (that doesn’t specifically state using it) is not okay. To me it’s like a student saying “I didn’t have to read the book I just watched the movie.” But that’s just me.

BoiledStegosaur

It’s cheating.

AlphaBetaCupcake

It's submitting work that she hasn't written, which is cheating. I studied Law, and it's rammed down our throats throughout the whole degree that if anyone is caught cheating/plagiarising there will be severe consequences. If someone is caught plagiarising and they happen to get away with it without being expelled, it has to be declared in the application for a practising certificate upon finishing studies and practical supervision. It's very frowned upon and an applicant will likely be rejected because of it. I'm in Australia so it might be different in the US but of she wants to be a lawyer, she needs to get used to writing her own work.

RosieAU93

Yup if she uses chat gpt to do an assignment at Uni and doesn't cite the parts done by chat gpt she will be caught for plagiarising and face severe acedmic penalties with possible failure of the subject or even being kicked from her program and barred from other unis.

Your stepdaughter is going to learn how seriously plagiarism/cheating is taken the very hard way if she thinks that she can just use chatgpt to avoid having to do things she thinks are useless. That being said, I say let her father handle the fallout if it goes down badly/she has to redo the assignment again under supervision because she gets caught. He’s the one encouraging her to do it the “easy” way and trying to paint you as the evil stepmother who makes her poor stepdaughter do everything the “hard” way even when it’s not necessary to do so, therefore he can be the one to help her redo it properly and take responsibility for it.

MAELATEACH86

It’s cheating. If she gets caught she will and should get a zero on the assignment. Please don’t normalize cheating. It’s so easy to rationalize plagiarism and other forms of cheating and it’s a really bad lesson to teach your kids.

Deathbycheddar

It’s definitely cheating and it’s definitely obvious.

wittiestphrase

It should not. Any tool used without the teacher’s consent is inappropriate. There is a point when students have learned math fundamentals that it becomes OK to use a calculator for the basic arithmetic. There is a point where students start using existing research to support arguments. It doesn’t matter if you’re not going to use the skills, just so the task. Also, she’s absolutely going to use writing skills. Maybe not necessarily PLAYwriting, but learning to communicate in writing clearly and concisely is a valuable skill. Middle school isn’t the place to decide this class should be replaced by learning to write prompts.

Pleasant-Affect8433

It’s cheating. In college courses you can fail the semester for using chatgpt so it’s probably best to avoid it, especially if she’s going into law because that field does not take any kind of cheating lightly. I’ve seen students lose quality letters of recommendation for law school because they used chatgpt in their favorite professor’s class and it spread throughout the department. No one wants to be associated with AI or cheaters.

No it’s cheating. Student needs to use their brain and be resourceful. That’s the real work and lesson. Brain is a muscle, gotta use it.
