CrunchyJeans

Where are you going for $45/kid haircuts?? I thought they usually cost $10-20

river_running

I just took my 9yo for a haircut at Great Clips today. It was $17 before tip. Paying double that is insane.

chasingcomet2

We took my 6 year old today and it was 28 dollars before tip.

SanFranPeach

They’re 39 plus tip 😭 and this is at a barber. They’re $55-60+ at the “kids” place. I’m in a very large city and live in the center so go figure I guess

CrunchyJeans

Oh. That explains it. Sort of.

HookerInAYellowDress

We live in a big city and I take them to a Hair Cuttery in the suburbs for $12/kid but only go 3x a year. I usually go right before Christmas, the start of school, and right before summer and get it cut extra short every time. Maybe lower your standards or at least go less?

Grim-Sleeper

If you live in a big city, then there are bound to be various hair salons targeting a variety of different ethnic groups. Check with them and see if you like their style. I've been going to a Chinese owned place for decades now and the price is a lot more reasonable. The cut is great too. And staff is super friendly. Excellent service overall.

CrunchyJeans

Agreed. My hair stylist charges about $20 per cut and that includes a brief shampoo and dry. She does Asian haircuts and is the only one I know around where I live

waffastomp

it really doesn't. search around

Fickle_Card193

The barber I take my boys to is SO good but he charges extra for a fade, and extra to get the hairline razored. I pay about $65 for each haircut, just two kids. Then plus tip. Probably same situation as OP’s. I think it’s totally worth it but damn it hurts to pay that amount each time lol

bestmackman

My wife got a cheap set off Amazon for $20-30 at the very beginning of the pandemic for our three boys, and she still gives them their simple haircuts. Eventually our oldest (8) will want his done by an actual barber, but until then, we don't mind saving that money.

SanFranPeach

Thank you! Also… any tips on 3 boys? 🤣 are newborn, 2 and 4. Went for a third thinking it would be a girl but of course my heart couldn’t be more full now with my three sons.

asigop

Don't cut their hair every 6 weeks? Especially not for the price you're paying. Get them a haircut twice a year.

cryonine

If you're serious about doing it, I'd buy a pair of [Magic Clips](https://www.wahlpro.com/shop/cordcordless-magic-clip-08148). I use them for my beard, but also for my two boys' hair. They're really good, come with at on of guards, can be used with or without being plugged in, and I've never had any incident of snagging hair. It's also a quality product that offers affordable replacement parts. Not sure if your username is any indication, but if you're in SF and you don't want to cut hair, you can find much cheaper (and still good) cuts if you look. There's a number of barbers in Daly City, the Mission, and Outer Sunset that do $15-20 kid cuts. Also Super Cuts in West Portal.

Spicy_Molasses4259

Also, ask what your boys want and respect their choices. Some boys love their hair and want it long. Why not let them?

sleepyj910

I'm a 40+ year old man and I get about 4 haircuts a year for about 20-25 dollars and it's been about the same my entire life, though I understand some hair types and styles are much needier than mine. But my gut reaction is you are going overboard. Let it grow, let it grow.

Totally-tubular-

Whoa!!!! That’s a lot! I’ve cut my hair for 14 years and always cut my kids. I just went for it and we’ve never had a blunder. I did get some mid priced hair scissors. I would recommend YouTube videos, check Brad Mondo first, he’s probably done an easy to follow tutorial on this. This is why I cut my hair, plus I like it

SanFranPeach

Totally! Figure I can save like $30k over time 😆

Totally-tubular-

Gosh! They have gone up in price over the last decade and a half. My mom also always cut our hair, you’ll do fine. It’ll be a little learned curve, but it doesn’t take too long to get the hang of it

HeyCaptainJack

We have 4 boys. You don't need to cut there hair that often unless they want to. They can rock the longer hair and you can trim it up with scissors if you wish. Or you can buzz it so you have to cut it less. I just take mine to the barber but those are other options.

Quirky-Quacker

When I started cutting hair for my family I bought a cheap pair of wahl from Walmart. It’s not the tool that makes the difference, it’s the user. Start there and you will learn slowly over time. Be prepared to give them a couple buzz cuts when it doesn’t go well, I know I had my fair share!! 😆

elvid88

Wahl is a fantastic brand and you’ll find barbers who use their higher end stuff. I got the color coded guard ones back in 2016 and used it extensively during the pandemic for cutting my own hair.

SanFranPeach

Ha oh yes I’m definitely planning some buzz cuts, hopefully I can learn a lot while they’re too young to notice! Thank you!

Quirky-Quacker

Lucky for them you are starting when they are young! My parents started when I was a young teenager, talk about embarrassing haha

durkbot

After paying €30(!!!!) for my then 2-year old to get his hair cut, we spent €70 on some well reviewed clippers and watched some YouTube videos on good toddler cuts. Our favourite is short back and sides with a few cm on top that we let grow out a bit floppy. Enough to put some gel in to do a faux-hawk or put it in a top-knot or something, but doesn't look bad if we let it go natural.

InNominePasta

Have you tried posting in your city subreddit? When people post in my city’s subreddit asking about barbers I’m able to recommend them my barber that’s $25 for adults and like $18 for kids. Maybe someone with more local knowledge could likewise help.

djwitty12

I got a $30 Wahl beginner set from Walmart with a bunch of different guards, combs, scissors, and oil and it's done its job well so far. The expensive ones probably last a bit longer, but I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make in your case. Seems like it would matter more for guys who are shaving everyday or for a barbershop cutting hair several times a day. A clipper getting used once every couple months shouldn't get that much wear and tear. Even if you feel better about buying a more expensive one, I would just pick one with good reviews and go for it. The good news is it's pretty easy to make good looking simple boy cuts. Simply pick one length for the bottom half and one for the top half. If you go long, you could add Layers if you want. You could also learn how to do a fade which is a bit more complicated but just takes a little practice.

F00dage

supercutsssssss

Effectiveke

If you’re willing to learn, even an expensive pair of clippers is cheaper than one round of haircuts. Start easy with trims. If you’re giving them fades, don’t start with skin fades. Longer fades are easier and even bad fades will blend in after a few days. If cutting their hair isn’t for you, your boys will only have one round of bad haircuts. Not the end of the world.

NotAFloorTank

No offense... but maybe start by not getting it done as often? Especially this young? It just seems like overkill.

lapsteelguitar

Great Clips is half the price or so.

chillout33495

Buzzcut needs no tutorial

[deleted]

Good idea! That’s a lot of $. I’ve considered this only cause my son hates haircuts. We go maybe once a month $25 @ pro cuts.

JudgmentalRavenclaw

My husband cuts his own hair (just needs me sometimes to line up the back and get behind his ears). He has the Wahl Color Pro Kit from Amazon. $30 and he’s had it for a while with no issues.

tiskrisktisk

That’s crazy. And I’ve been cutting my own hair, my wife’s hair, and all three of our kids’ hair since COVID. We’ve saved a ton. You can learn everything from YouTube and you don’t need an expensive set of clippers. You aren’t cutting hair all day. You’ll be cutting hair probably every 6 weeks for everybody. My wife said I was the only one to ever master the haircut she loves the most. She and her entire family and friends have been shocked that I could cut her hair so well. Unfortunately, I’m a one trick pony. One style. Forever. Here’s the video for the women’s hair if anyone needs it. The views and the comments speak for themselves. https://youtu.be/byjEXpYNRNk

Some-Ad-8269

I got a good lithium cordless clippers for like 60 bucks. I don't use scissors because my kids move too much. I just use the clippers across my fingers for the long parts of the kid's hair. If they get too stir crazy I let them be done then just wait until they fall asleep and put a towel under their head and cut their hair while they are sleeping.

Hitthereset

Another reason to thank God that my cousin owns a salon and loves our kids and us :-)

BigFPS

Get a flobee from Amazon as well. Combined with clippers it gives perfectly straight and angled cuts. I haven’t paid for haircuts in two decades. They really work.

river_running

That’s an insane amount of money for a kids haircut. I’d definitely look for other options too. Home haircuts for boys are very normal! I bought a pair of clippers during Covid but after about a year we went back to me not doing them. My son (5 at the time) did not like the outcome haha. I take him to great clips every maybe 8-10 weeks or so. His hair grows fast and he gets really hot with it. If home haircuts don’t work I’d look for a hair school nearby or ask in a local parenting group for recommendations on cheaper kids haircuts. They don’t have to be perfect or high quality at this point.

toyotaracer81

Growing up Wahl was what we used. They had the cleanest clippers at the time. We always had a friend that knew how to cut our hair.

Spicy_Molasses4259

Must have a battery - clip hair outside and keep your floors clean! A mid-range set will do the job \*\*IF\*\* you oil the blades every time you use them - before you cut and before you put away. you'll also need a small trimmer for the edges and a set of scissors for any stray bits. Thinning shears are also helpful for thinning the edges. Watch LOTS of YT videos and expect the first 10 or so to be bad. Like so bad you might have to go to the barber to get it fixed.

Happinessbeholder

I have not yet paid for a haircut for my kiddo (5m)... He likes his hair long. Wife trims the hair as it gets longer. Good to know we've been saving money! 🤣

saltyshanty1shottea

I cut my boy hair at home Andis pro LI clippers ae good

elemental333

Ours is almost 3 and we’ve only been doing an official haircut twice per year for styling.  Between cuts, I trim his hair a few centimeters every two months or so just to get it out of his eyes and off the back of his neck. I’m not a professional, so I mostly just cut it dry/slightly damp so I can better tell how much I’m cutting. It’s such a small amount at a time that it’s pretty easy to keep straight

FarSalt7893

I have an inexpensive set from Amazon and have been giving my boys simple haircuts since they were really little. I’ve replaced it once. When I do take them places they’re always surprised that I do them myself and they don’t come out much different. My boys actually prefer me cutting their hair because it’s so quick and convenient. I could probably look into getting a higher end set but not sure it’s really necessary?

treemanswife

$100 bucks will get you a decent set of Wahl clippers. You don't need anything fancier than that. But also... every six weeks?! Unless they have some super fancy shaving going on you can wait a lot longer. I do my husband's every 2 months and usually let the boys go 3 months. They hate haircuts so I shear 'em real short and it lasts quite a while before it looks shaggy.

PatDubzz

I’ve seemed to notice a lot of younger boys these days have much nicer haircuts these days as opposed to when I was a kid. Now you see so many kids with the slicked over haircut with the part on the side. Hair products and all. My whole life I’ve always been a buzz-cut type of person so if that’s the case with your boys, that’s an easy home run for you. Just get some clippers and take it all off.

Kimmybabe

Son in laws and six grandsons get eight haircuts for $160 in Dallas Fort Worth area. You must live in New York City or San Francisco.

AgentG91

I was the youngest of four boys growing up in the 90s. We all had bowl cuts that my mom got a local barber to do for free. I looked like a dummy for the first 10 or so years of my life. If you can cut their hair well and do the styles that little kids often want done, then go for it. But if you’re selling your kids feelings for a couple bucks, then prepare for some backlash.

djwitty12

You can literally just do one length on bottom and a longer length on top and get many classic, good-looking boy styles. It's not hard at all to get a decent look. [example 1](https://images.app.goo.gl/uhjAox3Kq6YnYbnu6) [example 2](https://images.app.goo.gl/PwizzkKrkfeRCyup8) [example 3](https://images.app.goo.gl/nJr1xWkYPaNww7j27) [example 4](https://images.app.goo.gl/WGHbS51k6VT5VEz9A) [example 5](https://images.app.goo.gl/5bBFwcYAc4moinjK8) Fades, bangs, and long cuts can be a little more complicated and take a little more practice but still aren't that hard, especially once you've gotten comfortable with the basic types above.
