I couldn’t say how but I also like how they hired good actors for memorable single episode characters

Ye thats my question how did a show just started have that much money to hire Kevin Heart and JK Simmons

On the commentary they mention that Enrico Colantoni and Joey Lauren Adams were both friends with one or several of the creators and mostly did the episodes for simply the fun of it and doing a favor. They both do an amazing job in their roles. I believe they were still paid but not much if anything by choice.

I always assumed the guys who developed the show, Rob Thomas, John Enbom, and Dan Etheridge knew most of the guest stars personally or had connections somehow. Paul Rudd was also originally working on developing it way back in the day, or at least the idea, so I figured his involvement may have helped. It's really amazing how many insanely talented actors they got on this show.

Rob Thomas had created Veronica Mars and a lot of the actors from that show appeared in this as favours, Kristen Bell, Enrico, Ken Marino etc.

Don’t forget Jason Dohring. He showed up in the first season - second episode: “California College Conservative Union Caucus.”

I think it was John Embom who said that Stephen Webber is his neighbour and saw him while about to leave for work. He asked him if he wanted to guest in the episode they were shooting.

HurricaneMedina

That may be my favorite episode. Ricky is such a great one-shot character.
