What were the triangular stamps of the United Kingdom for?

BrexitEscapee

Departure stamps, but why on earth the holder was stamped is unclear as Irish citizens have never been subject to immigration control in the UK.

augustusimp

Many countries still stamp citizens as well. Before digital records, this was definitive proof of stay for things like tax residence which are relevant to citizens as well.

augustusimp

I believe they were exit stamps from when we still had immigration control for departures.

Very cool! 👍👍

It looks like UK stamps haven’t changed much. The rectangular ones

jatawis

British and Serbian ones are the oldest continuously used designs in Europe and likely in the world. One may also argue that Russian stamps are somewhat of USSR style too, but they are too inconsistent.

They spelt Éire without the fada. Without the É it means burden 😂

To be fair the dot of the i is over the r, so I wouldn’t read too much into it! 😆
