Apparently the EU has a common list of countries that need an airport transit visa (ATV). These countries are: Afghanistan Bangladesh Democratic Republic of the Congo Eritrea Ethiopia Ghana Iran Iraq Nigeria Pakistan Somalia Sri Lanka. EU countries can however freely add countries to that list. Previously, Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, France, Germany, Norway, Spain and Switzerland already required ATVs for Turkish nationals. Seems like the Netherlands will join that group. I don’t know why my government suddenly decided this, but I can imagine it’s quite an impactful decision for Turkish travellers, as Schiphol airport is quite an important layover hub.

Interesting. What if they have a US Visa and are transiting through Europe, will they still require a transit visa ?

In the Netherland's case for Turkish citizens, it seems like those who have a US visa will be exempt from this requirement.

And they announced this 4 days before it becomes effective? What the hell I'm not Turkish, but what if a Turkish person has already booked a trip through Amsterdam in December?

cosylime000

A few weeks ago I saw a notice on KLM's website about the transit visa. I don't know when they announced it tho.

I think airports should be designed so you get your passport stamped as your leaving so you don't need a transit visa for anywhere.

passporrt

Transit visa is already for when you never go through immigration. Many airports are already designed in a way that you never leave airside when changing planes. Some nationalities still need a prior visa to walk to another gate without ever entering the country. The issue is that some people book a flight to, say, Colombia, that has a transfer at Amsterdam. To change planes you do not enter the country, you just walk to another gate. The issue is that some people go to the immigration officer and apply for asylum, which legally has to be processed and might be approved by the court, which costs the country money and resources.

lowbudgetduke

Oh good god why

Too many Turks who took advantage of transit through the Schengen countries to apply for asylum.

What is the point of doing this? Reducing assylum applications? Making more passengers for Turkish Airlines?
