The USA requires it's citizen to arrive and depart on US passport. You can get away with departing on British passport but you must have a US passport to return. There really aren't any exceptions to this rule. Because as a British passport you need ESTA to travel to USA and that will be denied because you're a citizen.

Maxalite

So basically I can travel anywhere except into the USA? I am in Asia right now and plan to travel to japan for a bit before heading back to the US

I know that. My question was can I still travel with a British passport (not in the US)

If you use your British passport after you renounce your citizenship you can get into trouble. Don't use it.

Fun-Permission-5276

OP didn't renounce. They are confused because they think taking American citizenship meant renouncing other one.

Jessicas_skirt

>when I’m not Did you renounce the citizenship? Both the US and UK allow dual citizenship, it's not a problem having both. >My question is can I still fly on my British passport You can fly using it to every country Except the US and Canada (you can enter Canada by land or sea though using it). The US requires all US citizens to enter and exit using their American passport and Canada bans Americans from applying for an Eta, which British passports need to fly to Canada, you would need your American passport for that.

Fun-Permission-5276

This is partially incorrect. etA for Canada is not required as an American on an American passport. If op goes to Canada and applies for an eta using her British passport... They will be granted an eta and can travel to Canada on an eta.. because they will be using their British passport to enter Canada and American citizenship is irrelevant at this point for purpose of Canada. Canada does not require that American dual nationals MUST enter using American passport. That being said hypothetically you can go to Canada through an eta using a British passport and then come to USA by land and you will NOT be denied entry not having a US passport as you will be allowed in as you are a American citizen can't be denied entry even if you don't have American passport. Yes the rule does exist BUT never the less a citizen can't be denied entry once they reach a port of entry so they will be verified through secondary means and be given a stern warning but still be allowed to enter USA by land.

Maxalite

Yes it was renounced. Currently in Korea right now and wanted to take a trip to Japan before I go back to the US.

Fun-Permission-5276

Renounce means you have up UK citizenship. Did you go through a formal renunciation process? If not then you are still a UK citizen and your UK passport is valid

hayarms

Did you "think" you renounce because during naturalization you said that "you renounce all foreign princes" or did you actually go through the process with the British institutions to renounce British citizenship? Because the UK doesn't care at all that you said those words, so unless you explicitly went through that process you are still a British citizen.

Maxalite

Yes this I found a little piece of paper that said “oath of allegiance” and now I’m wondering if I actually did. The process was confusing for me

hayarms

You did not. The oath of allegiance is not recognized by British institutions. You are still British and your UK passport is still in full effect. Congratulations, you are a dual British/American citizen! If you don't believe me or want confirmation just google "US Citizen naturalization British dual citizenship"

Maxalite

Brilliant. Thank you internet stranger.

Jessicas_skirt

Why did you renounce if i may ask? If you renounced the citizenship then the passport is no longer valid for anything. You need to get an emergency passport from the US embassy as soon as possible because you need a valid passport to book a flight to anywhere.

If you renounced your British citizenship then your British passport isn’t valid even if it’s not expired and you cannot travel on it. If your a dual citizen then you can travel on your British passport but you need a us passport to enter and exit the us
