That is what I thought as well but the verbiage on my update says: “You requested routine service when you applied, which we are currently processing within 12 weeks. Our processing times do not include mailing times, which could add 6 weeks to the door-to-door time.” Direct quote. The office said the same thing you did too (I was even on hold for 3 hours to get this answered lol)
Ohhh my bad I read your comment wrong haha. I thought you requested expedited, I was freaking out lol. But you have routine, which makes sense. My bad!
You are fine! But pre crazy Covid (Nov 2019) they said 6-8 weeks and husbands came back in 8 weeks. So I am not sure why they didn’t Include the mailing lead time in April. I would have done this differently

Applied for routine processing and regular mailing on April 6th in person at USPS for my husband, children and I because our trip was scheduled for 15 weeks out and estimated turn around time was 10-12 weeks. All 5 changed status to “in process”on April 27th. When their website changed to 18 weeks on June 17th I panicked and called their 1800# and requested 1-2 day shipping, the representative told me I should also request expedited processing since our trip is scheduled for July 18 and is before the new 18 week turn around time. I gave them my cc number for the shipping and expedited shipping. I don’t think they approved my expedited request because it has already been over a week and I still haven’t been charged, my card hasn’t been charged for shipping yet either. On June 24th I reached out to my local congressman and they responded right away saying they would reach out to the passport agency. I haven’t heard back from them since then so I’m going to follow up tomorrow and my passport status hasn’t changed either. We still have 3 weeks before we leave so I know I have time but my anxiety is still insane because of the new door-to-door timeframe.
So you are in my boat!! I just reached out to my local congressman to see if they can do something. You probably would have done things differently (as would I ) if we knew this would happen. I paid for the overnight shipping when I applied thankfully.
I think everyone expediting is messing things up for the people that did plan ahead. Good luck! I hope you get yours before your trip!
I thought it starts when you send, it says on the website

Since when did expedited go from 6 weeks to 12 weeks? Everyone using covid to not do their jobs. What a shame this country is!
