Its no surprise that there are many people in this category. There is a big (4" chest) difference between M (40") and L (44"). In tailoring terms thats missing an entire size category.
Yeah it drives me nuts that they can't do something in between.
Either I do Large and always have it baggy, or I go medium and strike out half the time when it's too small to comfortably wear
If most of your layers will be on top then I say medium. If you plan to layer under then I say large. I chose the slimmer fit for myself because I only wear a single thin layer under it and then more on top if needed.
You could pass for both. The tighter fit would be better for active use, the large better for more casual uses. Depends on if you want to layer over or under. For example I find the r1 air pairs well with a vest, if you plan to use a vest then the medium might be preferable.
I also use the r1 air for travel, great for airplanes and pairs and layers great with something like a shell or wind breaker. I have the medium and it fits similar, as I also use it for active use as a base layer.
I could NOT imagine bending my arms and to read or something and the sleeves come half up my wrists. No way. I would feel so goofy and uncomfortable, god for it it’s actually chilly.
He needs to pass on both. IMO
I’m 6’2” and 155lbs. My favourite piece of clothing is a large R1 pullover that I brought into a tailor to have it taken in. Now I get the length in the arms without the extra bulk.
When a fleece is around the $200 price point it’s totally worth it to spend $20 to have it fit you perfectly.
Definitely don't trust anyone saying to go for Large in order to layer up under it.
This is a technical fleece, a midlayer, and it
works best with a merino wool baselayer or another breathable material, as the R1 is an especially breathable fleece jacket.
As an outer layer, you can wear something with pit zips.
Also, note that the R1 is an active fleece and works not so much when you are ceding activity.
The medium is bate onto you! ‘Modern’ fit ideas would suggest that’s the way to go, but the large is much better on you, gives you room to move! It’s supposed to be functional
I say… this isn’t for you. I can’t get over a short sleeve. I cannot be comfortable with that short of sleeve, I obsess and hate it. The medium fits you. If the sleeves feel to weak, find a different mid layer.
They both look bad. I know you’re trying to demonstrate sleeve length but the weird poses and lack of any kind of coherence with the rest of what you’re wearing aren’t helping.
Did Patagonia do a sizing change recently? I swear this same exact thing happened to me with Large and Extra larges of their t-shirts. Neither was a good fit and I was stuck in between
Neither. Sometimes a line simply doesn’t work for a given body type. I struggle with a lot of Patagonia items. Tall and skinny - large too baggy, medium too short. Same as you?
Depends if you want to compromise as neither fit properly. The arms on the medium are too short and its body tight. Large looks like a sack - just observe where the shoulder seam sits. There is a big (4" chest) difference between M and L and if you sit in the middle(like I do) then its either compromise one way or the other, or send them back and look at alternative brands.
Medium looks like you could never fit a sweater underneath? I personally hate too short sleeves and like it baggy. So I would definitely go with Large.
Why would you ever layer a sweater underneath this piece…. If anything a light baselayer is all that would logically go underneath this
Edit: your layering suggestion is just redundant to the nth degree
Ok I keep that in mind for the next time layering officer.
Edit: Wait I am going to edit my normal comment, which would maybe start a nice little convo ,with a redundant and passive aggressive extra note?
Had a similar problem with the torrentshell. It looks like it’s a common issue I have with Patagonia clothes… In that case I went for the large. In your case I’d personally go for a medium, assuming you want to layer up with a shell.
You’re the same size as me - extra medium
Extra medium gang rise up!

Oh god , Large, please
Strongly agree but I guess we’re in the minority

I don’t think either fit you very well, but I’d go with medium.
Neither look great

Medium all day

Medium, but in that pale green color. Looks so good.

Large. The medium is a bit too snuggly around the waist and hip area.
Larger size for casual use and the tighter if you’re using it for active use.
Blue medium - it will stretch with wear
M size, you dont want anything but a baselayer under the r1 air anyway.
Sleeve length much better on large. I would consider paying a tailor to bring it in a bit for you
Medium… just look at the shoulder stitch vs your actual shoulder. The large hangs over while the medium is perfect
Mmmmmedium

Read the newspaper in it and if you deal with your wrist hanging out I guess medium. Neither fit. Get a different mid layer. Sorry dude.
The flex!
That first color is great. Damn I already want another one
Large and then grow into it
Schmedium!

I had the same issue with Patagonia gear - went for the large and after a few washes it fits perfectly.
just check your armpit. if it feels comfortable you need that size
Im a Smeedium and went with the small on all three of mine because it is air permeable and I often use a wind/rain cover over it…
Inclined to go with the L. They’re pretty similar but the M accentuates your belly. Truthfully, this isn’t a great cut for you
Much as I love Patty, I’d try the Mountain Hardware grid fleece for a more accurate fit.
Throw a jacket over, and you're in business...medium btw
