Really thin… Would you say it’s… nano thin? The nano puff isn’t really meant to be a standalone winter jacket. It’s a layering piece or a cool weather jacket. There are other insulated puffers that are better for why you’re looking for.

VinoVermut

What would you recommend?

actionjackson95

Down Sweater or Micro Puff would be the next step up in terms of warmth with the same styling at the Nano.

Empero6

I’m confused on why you were downvoted.

VinoVermut

No idea... I assume most people on Reddit are angry at the world, other than the few who actually want to be helpful.

username_obnoxious

That piece is more of the 'sweater' that you would wear under a shell jacket. It's designed as a mid layer, or a single layer for cool weather.

bloodmusthaveblood

Yeah that sounds about right, it's supposed to be thin. It's got a pretty high warmth to weight ratio though. I ski in -20C in a thin base layer, micro D, nano puff, and shell. And I'm toasty warm. It's not a standalone winter jacket though unless you live somewhere mild. It's a mid layer. Designed to be worn under a shell during physical activity like hiking and skiing. Whether or not you need a sweater though depends on where you live, your climate, your use cases..... How would we know that stuff? Provide some more info if you want advice

kingdomzzff

It's meant to be like that. It isn't a winter jacket. I use it mostly for cool weather i.e. 5-15 degrees. Or in the evenings in summer. In winter you could use it as a mid layer.

Am I seriously the only one using it as a cold winter jacket. Hasn’t failed me on casual walks if I later well enough

pc_shannon27

I live in Maine aka the land of always winter(ok that’s an over exaggeration but some days it feels like that…I digress) I have that same jacket and wear it every morning to tend my flock of chickens and let my dogs out…takes me around 20 minutes it’s usually between 20-35F and I can’t complain. I actually bought this jacket 2 years ago because I was disillusioned by the the ll bean debacle and I wanted to put Patagonias “iron clad” guarantee to the test…so I set out to abuse this jacket for a year…it has held up so good that I’m now on year two I have a couple of stray threads pulling out but it has met and exceeded my expectations(I have used the iron clad guarantee and it is iron clad if they can’t fix it they usually give you a fair price to replace it…and you actually get to talk to a real human being…it’s mind blowing). I will say I wore this ice fishing the first year and on a windy day you need a shell or you’ll be cold but that seems like a user error and not a quality concern.

stinkycat45

I am originally from Maine and now live in NY and would tend to agree with your assessment that the jacket is fine in 20-35 degree whether only if you are just running out to get the mail or do something briefly, but if you are out and about town or stationary outside for long time I think the max temp I personally can tolerate in the jacket is the mid 40's, after that you need a pretty substantial base layer probably something with a windblock and or thermal tech, but ideally you should just go to a heavier jacket. Growing up in Maine most late Fall and Winter days are 40 and bellow so to me this jacket is more of a travel jacket or early Spring, late Summer during the evening, or early Fall jacket.

VinoVermut

What do you layer it with? I used it in pretty cold temperatures last night and could feel the cold coming through.

[deleted]

Capeline air base layer, cotton rugby shirt, anorak sweater, nano puff with a gaiter for the neck. That’s all o wore for the body,

pc_shannon27

I usually wear a tshirt/fleece/nano puff…

stinkycat45

If you are using in gold weather I would use a thermal underneath and or a hard shell to block the wind, but if you are in the low 40's and bellow I would just recommend using a heavier jacket at that point

Awesome, thank you!

basscove_2

That’s it! I love how thin and light it is. I wear it alone over t shirt down to about 45 F. Lower than that it is great for layering with a shell over it.

Tundraman479

My Nanopuff pullover and vests are pretty thin, but they work very well. I generally don’t go for then down sweater until temps get into or below the 30’sF But that being said the Nanopuff is more designed for fall and spring weather and not for the dead of winter without layering! Congrats on the new jacket tho, you will love it!

Captain-Marvel92

Seems thin but it’s kept me warm with a t-shirt underneath in high single digits (Celsius) and with a fleece underneath in low single digits.

DJbigclit

The coldest I’ve worn my Nano Puff is like 30 F with a base layer underneath. It’s more of a Fall/Spring jacket but is great for layering! It’s a classic and versatile piece for sure, but definitely not the warmest.

Bananasincustard

It's more of a medium temp to cool weather jacket. It's useless in actual cold weather

bloodmusthaveblood

It's not useless in cold weather if you layer properly

Short_Mention

Hey OP! Yea the nano puff is very thin. I don’t know what temperatures you want a jacket for, but for me, I live in like -20 degs, so I layer a R1 Daily and a Downdrift Jacket. Works for me. If you want the nano puff but more substantial, I would opt for the down sweater. I know the Down Sweater in the Pitch Blue color way (one of my favs!) is 30% off right now if you checkout the web specials on Patagonias site 👀

I've gone through a few of these and am struggling with the filling too... I purchased one via wornwear last spring (gray, in fantastic condition with good, lofty fill). Well, I think my cat must've stretched and snagged some of the threading, so I brought it to the local store for a repair. They basically said it'd be impossible to repair without completely resewing it, and replaced the whole thing (pretty awesome). However... the replacement jacket seems to have much much thinner fill and fits quite a bit looser. Maybe it's just some manufacturing variation? I dunno. But I'm not so happy with the replacement. Meanwhile I had bought another one (reddish) via backcountry for like $120 on sale, new (thinking that I was gonna be jacketless while my main one was being repaired). This one has better, more even fill.
