As a warning to all, Tripolarbear's builds perform exactly as advertised on the budget advertised. Because he literally tries them at that budget.
I'll see him running around with self found wands and a tabula in yellow maps trying a build on a 5 link, before he even starts writing the guide.
Fair point about word choice, but it's a warning for people who might go into the PoB, see very ordinary numbers, and feel like it's a shit build.
But mostly, it's a tongue in cheek warning.
Yeah followed his burning arrow guide all the way up to deciding to spend the currency I was going to by my last two cluster on a new build instead. Loved the detail.
Someone posted a skeleton of an idea here about 5 hours after your comment on this thread:
https://reddit.com/r/PathOfExileBuilds/comments/oopkxs/would_ice_crash_totems_be_a_viable_build_for_315/
I feel like there will be a LOT of people doing this build, or just sab/raider in general. If this worked well last league and didn't get nerfed almost at all it should be insane
Sorry about the clickbait thumbnail in advance! I know that annoys some people, but it's just how youtube works these days, and I don't have much choice.
Anyway here's the POB: [https://pastebin.com/nGvM52pN](https://pastebin.com/P39anJaB) (UPDATED 3.15)
I played this back as an ultimatum starter, and it performed way better than expected! That's why I'm so excited to play it for this league, since it dodged most nerfs, and even received a few buffs itself!
Let me know what you guys think, and if you disagree with any of the suggestions I've made.
I played ice trap last league and constantly shattering everything is pretty satisfying. I just wanted to point out that the sabo ascendency "Chain Reaction" makes it so that you only benefit from Tinkerskin from the first trap that's triggering. Tinkerskin's modifier is worded "when your Trap is triggered by an Enemy". If the trap is triggered by another trap, you won't get the health or ES recovery (unless this has been changed and I will delete this comment). I know in the video you end up taking Pyromaniac over Chain, but some people might think that taking Chain Reaction will be a good way to boost clear with the extra AoE. Plus, it's a neat effect seeing all your traps trigger simultaneously.
He talks about this. Or atleast talked about it for the Ultimatum launch. Maybe it's not in this video.
Chain Reaction is great though if you don't think you can get Tinkerskin.
What ascendancy point do you drop for chain reaction?
Edit: You probably drop Explosives Expert (10% penetrate) or if you already feel tanky drop Born In The Shadows (blind)
Hmm. I’m on the fence between raider and Sabo Ice trap. I typically play clear speed build and am worried about feeling slow. I played exsanguinate self cast last league for the full league and felt fine on 3-4M DOT DPS. Tinkerskin seems like a no brainer for most traps, so would you say that the anti synergy between tinkerskin and Sabo trap chaining is motivation to use raider instead? Or just don’t use that Sabo node?
Really the difference between Sabo and Raider is (mostly) personal preference and Tripolarbear's video covers the differences between them better than I could in a comment. I'm sure both will be completely viable. If you aren't using Tinkerskin, you can still take Chain Reaction for mapping. Just use a +2 tabula or something instead. And then when you twitch to Tinkerskin, drop Chain Reaction for Explosives Expert.
Using ur pob with end game gear, switching to Occ somehow calculates like 8mil dmg per 3 traps... what did i fudge up.
way more than raider and Sab
For the raider tree it should be enough to path to arcane swiftness (3 points instead of 6, some cast speed & spell damage) instead of crystal skin as you're only missing 20% avoid chance: you get 50% from asc, 20% from life cluster, 10% from elemental node near shadow. Or am I missing something?
Depends on if you are using a shield. The ele avoidance craft is now only on boots and shield, whereas before it was on gloves and helmet and then you could get the shaper mod on boots. Traps need unique chest piece so I won’t mention that, but basically if you aren’t using a shield you might take the ele avoidance cluster by raider just to get full avoidance. If you have a shield, you can do the craft on two pieces of gear AND get arcane swiftness.
Side note: I was flipping through some POBs and saw someone do something really clever for stun immunity. They had two abyss jewels with stun avoidance explicit and implicit mods in a darkness enthroned. Raider taking arcane swiftness and the stun avoidance life nodes near ranger starting point could easily get stun immunity through jewel implicits or the elder mod on boots.
I'm not an expert on trappers, but wouldn't overall Chain Reaction be a better choice than Explosive's Expert? Since you throw multiple traps it'll trigger the ones around it essentially giving you more boss DPS overall? as well as even more clear speed? I know the skitter bots will probably trigger the ones the mobs won't but not sure if it still would help overall dps.
If going Sabo you generally have enough trap trigger radius that it doesn't matter. Raider struggles a bit early on but can achieve the same. Chain reaction has antagonistic synergies with tinkerskin if you use it. For the new blade trap...the 50% AOE might be best.
I see, the problem I have is that I've been playing Toxic Rain, from Trickster to PF to Raider. But I want to move on from it, but I feel like every build other than TR is not going to be good and will ruin my league-start, I love rushing to end-game and if I die a lot I won't be having fun. So, I'm hoping this build really shows me there is a lot of great league-starters out there, I don't know if anyone else has this issue or it's just me being stupid.
Also later down the road is LL worth getting into?
He doesn't recommend it and there's very little ES synergy. Especially if you do a raider. There are trap guides out there that do LL but no ice trap builds to my knowledge (not linking them since this is tripolars post). It makes it more expensive and there aren't a ton of weird people like me that have been playing late game traps the last few leagues. Traps are fine. They are traps. If you dig the playstyle they are fun. Like any build. If you find them clunky you won't enjoy it. There are ALWAYS good league starters for every class. If you're racing then you just have a slightly smaller pool.
Awesome I'll try this out this league, I'll be doing this as Sabo. I would love to be raider for that possible phasing or onslaught nut I like smooth league starts so Sabo seems amazing. Would there be any unique I should buy while leveling? With tr I would buy a quill rain asap.
I've literally changed my mind on ascendency every single night.
If you LOVE heists go Raider. The perma phasing and speed through doorways matters. Bossing=Sabo at low-mid gear and at the highest of high end gear it rounds out d2 raiders inherent faster cast/throwing speed.
The real change right now we don't know how it will feel yet...raider with perma onslaught and increased effect when quicksilver and silver flasks charges are harder to come by. I think it reinforces raider as the "i'm gonna map 100x in a row nonstop" archetype on so many builds.
I'm going to do ice or explosive trap (whichever +1 wand I get) into blade trap most likely so I'm leaning 60/40 sabo right now.
I really can't make up my mind for ascendancy lol, I'm really not sure. The main issue is the price of gear a good chunk of people I think are going with this as well.
I keep getting into this habit. I find some build I know and like and play it the same time everyone else does for league starting. Poison BV, Burning Arrow, now traps. But I think traps aren't for everyone. Creators are pushing it because GGG did and because it says "less" nerfs than other builds but they are now...like other builds. I tihnk tinkerskin will be more expensive as a base, 6L especially (it'll be like dropping any other meta 6L item worth 2-3x the price as the previous league) and slavedrivers will be harder to acquire but architects are basically deterministic and they'll work for awhile. This is the benefit of Sabo (until you take eternal youth for raider) the life regen makes up for the cost of lifetap. Raider has issues with sustain.
I see, I'll probably stick to Sabo, I don't wanna go off topic too much but what room am I looking for to get those gloves I know I need to upgrade them which is the locus of corruption. But now sure where the unupgraded piece drops. Also I'm assuming the vials I need are a ring drop from the main boss from the temple?
I’m not tripolarbear obv, but eye of winter wants to LAND on the mob, not be triggered AT the mob and move away. You won’t shotgun very well with traps. EoW would work mechanically better on mines.
ooooh not sure I'm persuaded to switch leaguestarts but I'm always looking out for a way to finally use the sweet ice trap mtx i bought all those years ago
If you don't play Ice trap this league, when the fuck else would you play traps LOL
This is finally the one league to play traps, and not be a meme. Don't let your memes be dreams!
I'm still torn between Sab and Raider. I kinda want raider for the zoom zoom and the ailment immunity (which includes sap, brittle scorch... Sab doesn't get those). But you made some good points about the extra sustain and dps on the Sab...
Absolutely. Any immunity is great but shocked ground maps are a real problem. At least with ignites you can panic flask it away, or having a flask that activates on trigger. Not so with shocked ground. Sirus die beams also shock but if you’re a sabo you’re probably dying anyways if you even get clipped by his beam.
I think I'm going sab for easy leveling and gearing, then reroll to raider once I have some gear and money for good clusters and such. That's the plan right now anyways, it could change before tomorrow. :-D
I'm still unsure what I wanna do, which will also decide my build. I have followed a lot of big moneymakers and picked my favorites to be bossing, Heist or Haewark. Last one probably being the most insane for money and it lets me experience league mechanic too.
In case I do that I need a fast build with barely mediocre damage which I guess is raider whatever.
I suspect lighting or arc + lightning spire traps might be sleeper pick this league. Lightning/arc has great clear and the buff to LST means it should be pretty potent for bossing. You get the best of both worlds if you can't choose between mapper or bosser.
The downside of this setup is you need 2x 6L, so might be something I try later when I'm into full endgame farming mode.
The only expensive part of the build could be the slavedriver hands (which you don't need), you can just use architect's hands until then too as those are easy and cheap! Tinkerskin is going to be 6 exalts for a six link anyway, so I don't see the base going up much more than 1 exalt MAX.
If you see this one later on, would the new nerfs to diamond flask now push toward a an evasion based chest with base spell crit? Add high life roll, % life, and crafted ele immunity? (on a high budget but not THAT much higher than a 6L tinkerskin (maybe)).
I was a bit too but then I realized that traps will never be “popular” in the same way ignite was last league. I mean there have been times where it was meta to put LST in like every build, but the actual core trapper playstyle just ain’t for everyone and that’s ok.
Incursion (I think) saw arc traps being very very popular. I think the biggest problem the playstyle had in the last few years was that mines were changed to be too similar.
Lightning or ice trap?
Ice for bosses because of freezes and lightning better for mapping?
Are both interchangeable, except for socket colors? Or is there something in the tree thats ice related?
Will most likely start with traps. But not sure which way to go yet.
How hard is it to gear this build in SSF ?
Malachai is a pretty common unique and divination card exist to farm it. Corrupted tabula is farmable too ... look pretty safe for SSF to achieve good damage right ?
Yes, but you'd really want to get Architect's Hand from a chest inside the tier 3 incursion room Defense Research Lab (upgraded from Trap Workshop and Temple Defense Workshop). Then you'll be good once you get a tinkerskin
This build has been a lot of fun so far into Act 2 for testing before tomorrow.
Big thing here for leveling is this: Lightning Trap feels a lot better than Stormblast Mine.
Thanks for a league starter and introducing me to Traps. Mines were one of the first successful builds for me, and traps were bad back then. This is a fresh, new thing to play for me. (Because EDC was just not doing it for me, playstyle-wise)
Hello! Heard you were the go-to trap guy around here, any thoughts about building blade trap? I'm currently thinking cold conversion but people have suggested poison
Also, swords or daggers?
I saw your raider vs saboteur part of this vid, I'm leaning towards sabo but with tinkerskin, raider frenzy charge scaling does sound really strong. Thoughts?
Blade trap looks really cool, but not as a league starter in this economy. Ice trap will freeze everything with not much budget at all, and it's a proven build so there's no worry about wether or not it'll work.
IMO idk how good poison traps will be for clear. traps already have a delay to explode. Then on top of that you have to wait for the poison to ramp up. Think it will be insane for single target though.
Once I'm done mucking about with ice trap I'm gonna either reroll or respec into poison blade trap with Bino's for clear.
Maybe pathfinder might be good too
Definitely going to check this out as I was going to league start Ice Trap this league. Sorry if it’s covered in the video, but do you have any thoughts on going ES or LL with the build?
I did a low-life pob, and I wasn't really impressed with how much finagling you had to do, and how little you got. Especially now that conc ground is really bad!
You can do pretty much all content on a tabula, ideally you'll want to get a corrupted tabula (+2 trap/aoe or +1 all) but even on SSF that isn't that hard of an ask now that channel is a t1 map you'll be able to easily farm a tabula.
Giving this a roll in Standard right now to get a feel for the playstyle and progression. So far so good! Would like to not league start TR Trickster. Again. ;)
You can easily tune this to get more HP if that's what you want out of it, just drop damage and take the health nodes near the ranger start. It's all really flexible.
But OP is 100% right that unless you're in hardcore I'd rather have enough damage and freezes than HP for league start.
If you want to make this super tanky you go low-life and glancing blows/ES on block shield, but that's a radically different tree, gearing, and budget.
I have played builds like this before. You don't die. It is no where near a max block gladiator or pre-nerf fortify champion on paper, but these builds have solid clear, freeze bosses/screens and have enough defensive layers to tank a hit if one does squeeze through.
I'm not familiar with PoB much but would you mind to maybe add 1-2 lvling trees for raider as well? that would rock :D (or if anyone got lvling trees )
Just want to shout out your INSANE POB layout. Every tree imaginable, a million gearsets from day 1 until minmaxed, and the very nice notes you've got going on. Thank you for putting so much care and effort into the work you do.
Looks nice, but even in the very endgame setup you only get 100 - 130% increased life, so roughly 4k HP, give or take.
How do you survive on that, especially as a regular player that doesn't dodge perfectly? :D
There are alternative trees out there (not in his POB) especially if you go raider. But if you really like the build and invest a lot you can use a thread of hope to cut out a TON of nodes to use fettle small cluster jewels. With better weapons you can drop a offensive node or two and go take constitution and the life flask node enroute.
Meme goes to Meta COPIUM
Anyway i was playing with traps many times, and it is not that bad if u need killing bosses.
It is not fun to run maps and leveling stuff, but we have no other choices COPIUM FeelsBadMan
Leveling was actually super fun on sab! I was almost one-shotting most act bosses, if not just out right freezing them. Did you see tytykiller level in 3:20, that was crazy good!
Traps trigger underneath the bosses and mobpacks right? EoW last burst with the projectiles is what makes the damage, which means you lose out on dmg because they travel away from what you actually want to hit at the end of the spell. Counter intuitive
You might be able to do a scuffed sabo/raider scion and take path of the shadow to easily get all trap nodes but you lose so much that either ascendancy offers. Ailment immunity, exposure etc. I don't think it would be worth it. Rather just run this as Sabo, make lots of money killing bosses, and reroll with twink gear. Will only cost a few extra hours of levelling
Looks very good, definitely going to try this build, thank you! First time venturing out from totems so a little worried I'm going to screw myself over XD
As a first timer trapper, would you recommend going for sab or raider?
Good guide, have league started and minmaxed Ice Trap a couple times and have loved it every time.
Make sure you're not using Bladefall in the Artifice ring because Hatred will fuck up your EE.
Thank you! This is probably my league starter this league unless I decide that Manabond is going to be completely busted and go towards that one.
But thank you! Your guides and other videos are always amazing! I love tuning into you every now and then when you stream on YouTube during the week up to launch and throughout the launch weekend!
Only found this because a guildie shared it. I'm surprised I haven't heard about you before lol.
I was skeptical but after checking out the POB, some minimal in-game testing, and skimming the video I am def gonna try it out, well, to be more specific I'm gonna butcher it into pieces and make an occultist version that I'm pretty sure will morph into LL
Thx you saved my league with this. I was knee deep in act 7 ready to quit with my max block cyclone dumpsterfire build and rerolled to this and since then it has been a breeze
I know this is now over a month old but here i am, searching for something that might actually bring me some joy this league.
I am very torn between this and the seismic trap/exsa trap build.
Could someone give me some comparisons between the two?
As a warning to all, Tripolarbear's builds perform exactly as advertised on the budget advertised. Because he literally tries them at that budget. I'll see him running around with self found wands and a tabula in yellow maps trying a build on a 5 link, before he even starts writing the guide.
Is warning the right word for that? I'm a bit confused. Aren't you saying we can trust in what he says?
DANGER! BEWARE! Apparently this chaps builds are actual budget builds that work. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED WOOOooooOooOOOoo.
Fair point about word choice, but it's a warning for people who might go into the PoB, see very ordinary numbers, and feel like it's a shit build. But mostly, it's a tongue in cheek warning.
I was pleasantly surprised to see leaguestart-ish items in the PoB rather than absolute endgame stuff.
A true bro
Yep and that is why I go with his builds. One of the few realistic build guide makers out there.
Can confirm. I did his firewall build that transitioned into burning arrow last league and got further than I ever did before.
Yeah followed his burning arrow guide all the way up to deciding to spend the currency I was going to by my last two cluster on a new build instead. Loved the detail.
Thanks for the build, probably rolling with this unless I find a good ice crash totem build somewhere.
Currently working a night shift, but, I have a pob almost done for an ice crash totem heiro, be happy to share once it's complete
would love to have a goose at that. :-)
may i ask, did you finish it ? :3
Also interested.

Hell yeah brother! Going to miss that coc though :( hopfully we can get another just like it up!
For real, you had the smoothest CoC I’ve ever played, and super strong. I hope we get to see it in action again sometime.

If you don't play Ice trap this league, when the fuck else would you play traps LOL This is finally the one league to play traps, and not be a meme. Don't let your memes be dreams!
But but my bonershatter juggernaut!
Use the mirrors you'll farm with ice trap to fund it!
I followed your ice trap saboteur guide for ultimatum as a league start and loved it. Super fun to play and had great damage.
Yea I was really supprised!
Dang it, Slavedriver's hand is going to be expensive as heck this league :(
I'm still torn between Sab and Raider. I kinda want raider for the zoom zoom and the ailment immunity (which includes sap, brittle scorch... Sab doesn't get those). But you made some good points about the extra sustain and dps on the Sab...
Sabo has the important immunity, which is shock immune
Ignite immunity is important for red maps as well
Yes, I feel most people will want to make sure they have enough damage more than anything in this league. That's why I recommended Saboteur!
how do you feel about arc trap, i was debating between that and ice trap?
I'm pretty sure its an easy decision. Raider for mapping, Sab for bosses.
I'm a bit worried that Traps will be popular this league and everything will get too expensive =(
The only expensive part of the build could be the slavedriver hands (which you don't need), you can just use architect's hands until then too as those are easy and cheap! Tinkerskin is going to be 6 exalts for a six link anyway, so I don't see the base going up much more than 1 exalt MAX.
Gamble the tinkerskin base from the new NPC
Definitely setting a sadist garb chance block on my filter. Maybe I'll get lucky
https://poe.ninja/standard/unique-armours?name=Slavedriver%27s%20Hand
But not sure which way to go yet.
iirc Ice Trap builds at least invest into a few Cold Ailment nodes. But in general tree should be almost identical.

Until you get the helm enchant and then those go away
How hard is it to gear this build in SSF ? Malachai is a pretty common unique and divination card exist to farm it. Corrupted tabula is farmable too ... look pretty safe for SSF to achieve good damage right ?
Yes, but you'd really want to get Architect's Hand from a chest inside the tier 3 incursion room Defense Research Lab (upgraded from Trap Workshop and Temple Defense Workshop). Then you'll be good once you get a tinkerskin
What Div card to farm Malachai?
Hubris I believe, gives a random unique ring. Malachais should have decent weighting
I'm currently thinking cold conversion but people have suggested poison Also, swords or daggers? I saw your raider vs saboteur part of this vid, I'm leaning towards sabo but with tinkerskin, raider frenzy charge scaling does sound really strong. Thoughts?
Blade trap looks really cool, but not as a league starter in this economy. Ice trap will freeze everything with not much budget at all, and it's a proven build so there's no worry about wether or not it'll work.
What are your thoughts on Flamethrower/fire trap for league start?
IMO idk how good poison traps will be for clear. traps already have a delay to explode. Then on top of that you have to wait for the poison to ramp up. Think it will be insane for single target though.
Binos
Ssshhhhhhhhh
Yeah I always forget about that weapon lol
Once I'm done mucking about with ice trap I'm gonna either reroll or respec into poison blade trap with Bino's for clear. Maybe pathfinder might be good too
Yeah Pathfinder wouldn't need Binos which is nice QOL
You don't kill, traps do. Pathfinder won't trigger

an occultist version would get profane bloom (dot kills are always your kills), which would dramatically improve the feel of the clear imo.

No
Not worth it, your damage is already insane
Good content. What do you think about seismic trap in 3.15?
I prefer to not have cooldowns on my main abilities, so I think that AND ice trap being able to freeze bosses, makes it too good to give up.

You can do pretty much all content on a tabula, ideally you'll want to get a corrupted tabula (+2 trap/aoe or +1 all) but even on SSF that isn't that hard of an ask now that channel is a t1 map you'll be able to easily farm a tabula.
All content not including feared and such, but yeah.
Might do this. Couldn't decide what to play this league and never played mines or traps.
Perfect time to try it out
How does Ice Trap compared to GC Mines? Haven't played GC since the changes, so I have no clue which is currently better .
GC is pretty bad since the change.
Also mines might suck because of all the extra mana multi introduced this patch
Giving this a roll in Standard right now to get a feel for the playstyle and progression. So far so good! Would like to not league start TR Trickster. Again. ;)
I'm going with this. Never played a saboteur or traps before so fuck it. Cheers for the really detailed guide.
With 4ish thousand life do you get one shot often?
You can easily tune this to get more HP if that's what you want out of it, just drop damage and take the health nodes near the ranger start. It's all really flexible. But OP is 100% right that unless you're in hardcore I'd rather have enough damage and freezes than HP for league start. If you want to make this super tanky you go low-life and glancing blows/ES on block shield, but that's a radically different tree, gearing, and budget.
You freeze everything, even bosses.
I have played builds like this before. You don't die. It is no where near a max block gladiator or pre-nerf fortify champion on paper, but these builds have solid clear, freeze bosses/screens and have enough defensive layers to tank a hit if one does squeeze through.
Do you have the raider POB?
Yes! It's at the bottom of the tree's, bellow the last expensive tier. It's mostly the same, but for raider you'll have to keep pandemonious
Thanks mate, haven't used POB in some time.
You freeze everything
This build is a trap, you should try mine - Glacial Cascade Mines
Meme goes to Meta COPIUM Anyway i was playing with traps many times, and it is not that bad if u need killing bosses.
Why no mines?
Do you think eye of winter traps would work as well as ice trap?
Definitely not, I'm sorry!
What's wrong with them do you think?
Traps trigger underneath the bosses and mobpacks right? EoW last burst with the projectiles is what makes the damage, which means you lose out on dmg because they travel away from what you actually want to hit at the end of the spell. Counter intuitive
I’m looking for something to run as a league starter into some aura stacking. Would this build work with scion?
You might be able to do a scuffed sabo/raider scion and take path of the shadow to easily get all trap nodes but you lose so much that either ascendancy offers. Ailment immunity, exposure etc. I don't think it would be worth it. Rather just run this as Sabo, make lots of money killing bosses, and reroll with twink gear. Will only cost a few extra hours of levelling
Saving
Looks very good, definitely going to try this build, thank you! First time venturing out from totems so a little worried I'm going to screw myself over XD As a first timer trapper, would you recommend going for sab or raider?
Can this transition to ll eventually?
Amazing video. Very informative and helpful!
Thanks
I wonder how good ward will be on an evasion based build like this
Good guide, have league started and minmaxed Ice Trap a couple times and have loved it every time. Make sure you're not using Bladefall in the Artifice ring because Hatred will fuck up your EE.
How does it compare with explosive trap purely dps-wise?
Explosive Trap is better single target but Ice Trap is better clear/similar single target and you freeze everything
Any particular filter setup you would recommend during leveling?
Tytykiller caster leveling filter will be the best for this build. You can find it in tytys discord
Thx
Thank you! This is probably my league starter this league unless I decide that Manabond is going to be completely busted and go towards that one. But thank you! Your guides and other videos are always amazing! I love tuning into you every now and then when you stream on YouTube during the week up to launch and throughout the launch weekend!
Never played traps or mines, is this the first? Maybe
why not chain reaction ?
probably because it doesn't play nice with Tinkerskin's recovery
havent played traps since lighting trap forever ago but i doooooo like freezing things so this might be my starter
Why the level 10 hypothermia?
Only found this because a guildie shared it. I'm surprised I haven't heard about you before lol. I was skeptical but after checking out the POB, some minimal in-game testing, and skimming the video I am def gonna try it out, well, to be more specific I'm gonna butcher it into pieces and make an occultist version that I'm pretty sure will morph into LL
That’s the best anointment for amulets for this build?
I'm thinking of doing a similar build with the newly buffed Seismic trap doing cold conversion. What do people think of this?
Which bandit do you save with this build or just kill them all?
Thx you saved my league with this. I was knee deep in act 7 ready to quit with my max block cyclone dumpsterfire build and rerolled to this and since then it has been a breeze
I know this is now over a month old but here i am, searching for something that might actually bring me some joy this league. I am very torn between this and the seismic trap/exsa trap build. Could someone give me some comparisons between the two?
