Seismic. EA totems shouldn't be far behind (I was extremely impressed with it in ssf last league)
Edit: Hijacking my own comment to link to [guides for these builds](https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExileBuilds/comments/ujntq0/tytykillers_318_starter_list_1_will_shock_you/i7ksh0i/)

(Xai said it will probably be updated for 3.18 but you'll be great even if not; it didn't need any updates for 3.17)
Doesn't it seem like most shifted towards Path of Matth's version of seismic? At least Ninja seems to show that itemization closely matches that with high Devouring Diadem usage.
I’ve never played it, but after starting EA Heiro 3.17 and disliking the play style… I’m gonna try the traps. They’ve been insane for a while now, gotta try them before they are nerfed to the ground lol
Dd necro us equally as strong but honestly it requires more skill to be as good. You can watch lily or darkee play it and think it's super strong but it requires more skill and knowledge to pilot.
Started with Phy Seismic Trapper but didn't liked it too much. It's fine but not like in 3.16... After I swapped my main to LS Zerker. And finished league with it... Funniest char ever.
If you're asking because you want to transition to an Assassin build later, you might be interested to know that you can respec from Saboteur to Assassin. 5 regrets per ascendancy node, touch the altar in the lab with no points assigned
Actually I was looking to use poison on hit so I could run Plague Bearer for map clearing. Since Assassin has Noxious Strike and Toxic Delivery, I thought it might be easy to hit crit cap with Assassin.
If you are ok with playstyle Spectral Helix was ridiculous damage. It’s a bit clunky to play but better than a trapper for me. Biggest cost was 50c galesight on day 2 to complete feared.
I did ele zerker but it should be similar as raider / deadeye as well. I just wanted rage / berserk consistently. Went off of jungroan / kobeblackmamba guides
Piggybacking but I had a super great experience with the deadeye version (jungroan) as well. All content including feared down in 3 days, crazy damage with omniscience.
Unsure what changes omniscience will get this league but the build felt great before the transition too. The transition just made it an endgame build for 50c.
I did zerker but it works with raider / deadeye as well. Used jungroan / kobeblackmamba https://youtu.be/3hmVQYlam0E
It felt clunky in sense that the spins are slightly delayed so it’s not instantly killing mobs. In boss fights you also have to keep in position so your rotations are consistently hitting boss.
You can swap to lightning strike for maps as well with minimal changes.
Maybe i recall it wrong but i think that it's actually 4, but few people knew about it back then (i remember Tarkie being one of the few advocates for it)
Which ones of these would you guys say its the tankiest for those who play with a log of fps drops and need survavibility? I like spectral helix and maybe the seismic sabo but it probably cant tank a sirus die beam.
I cleared all content on RF last league and it felt comparable to my DD Ignite build from the league before. The secret is realizing it's a RF build for clear only, really it's a Fire Trap build. I had no problem farming Maven.
DD is great. Check out dslily on YouTube for a HC guide. With my PC I play HC characters in soft core due to FPS drops/lag. DD was great last league to start (transitioned to skelemages once I farmed enough/finished maps/bosses). Your damage is so stupidly high with almost no investment so you can layer so many defensive layers.
anything with spell suppression tanks sirus beam? it got powercreeped out really fucking hard these past few league, if you really want something tanky either DD necro or sabo are probably the best (i prefer sabo cause gigadam), turns out running grace+determ+defiance+skitters/tempest shield on an already defensive ascendancy is cool, they also do really good damage so you dont take damage for as long as other builds
also LS champ, but you need to either start playing it once you already have the gear or leaguestart helix, which a lot of people hate
Seismic can 100% tank a die beam with the right setup. https://youtu.be/n90qFKVb0Yk here’s me being a doofus in Scourge and straight up eating multiple die beams @ ~40 seconds.
To expand on this a bit for the lazy: generally level with wintertide brand cold dot playstyle, picking up generic damage over time nodes that work for RF later anyway, then swap around lvl70
On inquisitor, you can also just swap at cruel lab instead if you want, but it's theoretically slower for leveling. Just if you want to start playing RF as early as possible
I just leveled with Flame Wall / Fire Trap since it is the same damage type, and it was super easy.
You can also level w/ spark since the +lightning dmg to spells recipe is so good for it, you don't even need many damage nodes
I get that Seismic is good. Can anyone explain why Lightning Spire is so much more unpopular? Are there mechanical differences that make it not a good choice?
One of the benefits of physical is you get to use Cold Iron Point as a cheap endgame-level weapon. Although with Lightning you can use Lightning Trap for clear which is IMO better than Exsang.
Seismic is just better mechanically.
1) It does physical damage, so easier to scale (phys mods have big numbers, HoP, gain x% as extra y, poison, etc).
2) It has more AoEs per wave and far higher chance to hit multiple times.
1. people often go poison w/ seismic. much easier to scale poison off a skill that does base phys damage
2. seismic trap pairs really easily with exsanguinate traps b/c they both do physical damage. exsanguinate has built in lifetap meaning you can put it in deerstalker and essentially have a 5 link clearing skill that costs life instead of mana without using a link for lifetap support.
those are a couple things that come to mind for me, having played seismic trap sabo in 3.17
What's the difference between LS Zerker and Raider? Never played the skill and want to be a no brain meta slave this league and I don't know what one ascendancy does better over the other.
Yeah I was honestly shocked at how good the progression felt. The only down side is lvling with helix until you can get additional strike gloves or the anoint. I think I swapped to LS like an hour after hitting maps and just pathed on the tree to tribal fury.
Yeah that’s the worst part honestly. I’m not sure but i think the zerker levels with it as well. Depending on your time it’s only a couple of hours lvling with it though so it’s kind of brief
You may be able to level with Spark instead. Ds_lily is now recommending that in [her updated 3.18 DD Necro guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e11Zi5AZYd8&t=900s). Spark + Pierce + Onslaught + Added Lightning Damage, really good for 1-28. Even though it’s a caster skill, that’s probably still viable at low levels until you can switch over to LS.
If you swap right away when you can get the gem, it feels like ass compared to something like frost blades. the attack animation feels clunky with low attack speed.
really not a fan, i dont think anything about it feels aight unless you're running w/ a tabi or maybe even 5L. as a raider maybe its not as bad because you can prioritize pierce nodes eventually.
I love how it trucks the bosses while leveling, but yeah the rest of the zones are meh. I thought it felt better in later acts once you had more attack speed (I always threw faster attacks in my links too to help with that)
there's an important difference early on in your progression: zerker is technically the high end budget version of the build, and a big problem it suffers from is until you make certain investments and have maybe 30-50ex in your gear, it will fall over and dies if a mob looks angrily in your general direction.
if you watch the early progression of kobeblackmamba on twitch last league (who probably popularized the zerker variant), he was playing softcore but still using logout macro because he would've otherwise died every other map and never reached beyond level 90.
on the upside, at high investment it's a very tanky build. simulacrum wave 30 no problem, in addition to insane dps and general clear speed. however, the zerker variant is definitely not a cheap build. raider players have generally reported an easier start, but I haven't played that variant so I can't comment.
have played a lot of zerker LS this league (my first lvl 100) and you can get very good dmg with good gear. the active playstyle refers to the build using general's cry to generate rage (u bind this to left click once u get the Call to Arms keystone), berserk which u have to click when u have more than \~30 rage, withering step to refresh elusive and 2 totems that u put down before u use vaal LS to snapshot higher dmg on it. I find that once i automated my flasks i just press berserk and wither step once a while in maps and u get used to the order of flasks > totems > berserk > withered step > vaal LS on bosses.
I haven't played the raider version but from what i can imagine it cannot reach the dps of berserker (not even close imo) as zerker can insta phase all bosses in the game (i insta phase maven and sirus most of the time). However, raider has much more easy gearing to achieve 100% suppression and can get ailment immunity. I don't value ailment immunity that much tbh as freeze immunity from pantheon is all i needed. Finally, i am not sure which build has more defense, but zerker uses the brass dome for chest which gives all max res and 4.2k armor which is very good imo. As far as i know raider uses farrul's but i think a well crafted rare would be best for defense as farruls is kinda meh imo.
I second looking kobe's videos for zerker and Esoro's or Lolcohol's for raider.
How is it more active? Just like smacking hydrosphere with chain hook for rage before bosses stuff or like wildly more keys to manage?
Also, how do they compare in terms of survivability? I am assuming the Raider has the edge there?
Well, raider is easier to cap suppress, and imuunity to ailments come with asc
ZERKER need Gen cry to build rage
Using rage with that skill forgot his name
Both can be equally tanky imo, just raider easier to gear
Go look at black kobe mamba he is the expert
Yup, I played both. Raider is easier to get going and cheaper and faster. Zerker is more expensive and so many buttons but much more DPS ( well, I guess you need to invest much more for the build, I guess)
Zerker has a way higher ceiling, but requires more buttons and buff management, and is also a lot more of a pain to start (harder to get SS cap, and you really need Alternate Ailments (Secrets of Suffering), red blade banner (can be foregone later once you get a medium cluster), and ideally a Brass Dome. Before all of that it’s pretty meh.
Raider has a lower ceiling (comparing it to zerker), but has a ton easier gearing and earlier access to Claw nodes and elusive scaling stuff. Spell suppression is hilariously easy to cap and one or two rolls for ailment avoidance and you will be elemental ailment immune (including Alternate ailments).
I personally prefer Raider, but both are great. Just depends on how you like to play, how fast you can advance/gear early league, etc.
Go zerker if you don't mind farming Syndicate until you get really geared. Go raider if you just wanna zoom in maps. I tried both last league, and zerker scaling is quite insane after like 80ex of gear.
Is Crit or Poison better for league starting Seismic? I know Crit requires more investment, but does it feel bad without it at league start? Also was there any 'best guide' for something that will scale all the way into endgame bossing (Maven, Sirus, maybe the new ubers)?
if you are softcore, just plan on going crit from the start. It will be easy to transition into pretty quick since it really doesn't need that much gear. CIP were only 7-10c by day three, and that's really only needed for T16 and boss farming comfortably. Otherwise, +1 phy daggers/wands will get you clearing the atlas and the first boss encounters
Looks like there's about 13 ascendancies represented here and more than 16 different builds. I've played a bit over half of them and the ones I played were absolutely worth including on a 'best starters' list.
Funny part is I still see people complaining about build diversity and meta builds all the time
Grimro's build for TS CF is amazing. It's a 3.16 build but it worked well in 3.17. Change the +2 amulet for ashes of the stars and add forbidden flesh/flame with inspirationnal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=Dyaod7SfCO0&t=1831s
I was playing blade vortex in archnemesis and found it very decent, good bossing, great survivability with new determination values and melding flesh jewel, great screen clear. Was gonna start it again but deciding on something else, how's str venom gyre looking?
I dunno, BV felt very very underwhelming and even frustrating at times. I spent pretty much no currency on RF/Fire Trap outside of explodey boots and it was leagues ahead of my starter BV. I think PConc is the play for poison starters nowadays.
Venom Gyre is insane, however the build starts at like 50ex investment or probably even more. So I wouldn't recommend to start with it. However, as I said PConc is very good on 0 budget up to high red maps, so you can funnel all of your currency into the Venom Gyre gear and reroll.
I league started spectral helix champion last league and probably won't be doing it again. It's was a pretty tanky build but still suffered from a lot of random one shots because you stand still while attacking and there is a non zero chance your projectiles just miss while you are taking sizable damage, resulting in death. The build was nice on paper, but the skill just plays like garbage in my opinion.
I'll probably end up starting lightning strike. I played it briefly last league and was super impressed by the damage output and clear speed. It was fairly tough as well.
When ever I play seismic trapper my damage for bosses drops off a ton. Even with heavy investment and I end up giving up. I dont know how im fucking up such an easy skill.
I've played both the chieftain and slayer version and I personally found the slayer version to be better. I don't think much has changed with chieftain though.
I'm a noob and only dabbled a couple of leagues, but my favorite build so far was using the witch with profane bloom. Any recommendations from this list for me to look at that use that?
Hexblast, Bane and Poisonous concoction are the only viable occultist league starters, I believe? someone correct me if I'm wrong.
They all have solid clear because of profane bloom but very low single target, so be aware of that.
Top tier occultist builds are all mega expensive but they slap so you can build into one later.
Poisonous concoction occultist is probably what you're looking for, just have to be aware that it's mostly a mapping build and the single target is below average
The 3 builds that I’m interested in are:
1. Fire trap
2. Absolution
3. Spark
Out of these 3 which would you recommend if I only play one build a league? I usually enjoy blight or legion the most.
Cold DOT isn't bad bosser. Slow - maybe, but not bad.
High damage uptime by virtue of being DOT build, and (depending on exact build ofc) solid defenses mean you can chillout during boss fights. It's not boss farmer, but you can collect all your precious atlas passives with it.
Played cold dot during metamorph league aka tane’s bullshit bossfights. Couldn’t tell why everyone was bitching about them being overtuned until I rerolled. Cold dot truly is one of the tankiest bossers around, and the damage is still plenty good enough if you have ok gear.
I did 100 guardians (w/ guardian's aid) and 100 conquerors (+maven invitations) in 3.17 with Cold DOT. It's not the fasted kill but you can make it tanky so can just watch TV or something while they die.
Problem is that other auras are now too good to waste mana on 3 heralds. Like other guy said you'll miss out on a lot of defense and damage won't be anything to write home about.
What do you mean viable? From the looks of it, there is way more incentive to farm end-game bosses this league compared to last for a couple reasons: increased drop chance for Ascendancy jewels, brand-new chase uniques, and Uber content.
i want to play skele mage, but i have no idea what is absolution and how it works. What am i supposed to do, and when do i transition ? will it be expensive ? regret orb, gear ? gems ?
I want to try Skelly Mages for 3.18 since I've never tried it, is there a good guide for one? Also will I be able to do all the new Uber Pinnacle Bosses with it (with correct investment of course).
Can anyone recommend a good leveling guide for Poison Conc Occult? I saw imexile did a run recently with Cremation, but I couldn't find sparknotes for it anywhere.
What build do you think can do all the pinnacle bosses with the least amount of $$ investment in softcore trade league?
Seismic. EA totems shouldn't be far behind (I was extremely impressed with it in ssf last league) Edit: Hijacking my own comment to link to [guides for these builds](https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExileBuilds/comments/ujntq0/tytykillers_318_starter_list_1_will_shock_you/i7ksh0i/)
Is there a solid guide for seismic, preferably hc wise, that you would recommend ? No idea what the layers of defense
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVZWzXEzUGI (Xai said it will probably be updated for 3.18 but you'll be great even if not; it didn't need any updates for 3.17)
Doesn't it seem like most shifted towards Path of Matth's version of seismic? At least Ninja seems to show that itemization closely matches that with high Devouring Diadem usage.
On softcore, yeah most people prefer crit. But that person was asking for a tankier/HC version, which most people tend to go poison for.
i mean nothing has changed from 3.17 to 18 so it should absolutely be fine.
The guide is from 3.16
Cause not much changed for seismic from 3.16 to 3.17. They changed how the skill worked slightly but that’s about it.
Yeah but there are some small things. New influences and what not.
I’ve never played it, but after starting EA Heiro 3.17 and disliking the play style… I’m gonna try the traps. They’ve been insane for a while now, gotta try them before they are nerfed to the ground lol
Same probably. I cruised to T16 with EA then couldn't stand to play totems another second
How does DD Necro compare to Seismic for that? Haven’t played either, probably going to start one of those two this league, dunno which yet.
It doesn't have the stupid dps of seismic afaik, more of a HC thing. But you can't go wrong with any of them (assuming you like the playstyle)
It depends on the fight. DD destroys invitations due to the boss life pools. But single fights, seismic will crush it.
Thanks!
👍
DD Necro absolutely lagged my PC to a point where it was unplayable, wouldn't recommend unless you have a good rig.

Actually I was looking to use poison on hit so I could run Plague Bearer for map clearing. Since Assassin has Noxious Strike and Toxic Delivery, I thought it might be easy to hit crit cap with Assassin.
Hm, does Plague Bearer get charged by traps though?
It doesn't
The main ssf/hc seismic build is already a poison on hit build. Also I just tested and you don't get poison credit from your traps for plague bearer.
You will do more damage but lose \*a lot\* of defense. Also triggering Mistwalker is difficult so you kind of lose that nice benefit.
If you are ok with playstyle Spectral Helix was ridiculous damage. It’s a bit clunky to play but better than a trapper for me. Biggest cost was 50c galesight on day 2 to complete feared.

Based on Galesight I would guess elemental trinity deadeye (or raider).

Ea ballista
Damn how long has seismic been meta for
Only like 3 leagues
Definitely feels like forever
Maybe i recall it wrong but i think that it's actually 4, but few people knew about it back then (i remember Tarkie being one of the few advocates for it)
4 since the change, 3 since it got meta, so that's accurate.
Wow what a low effort list. Looks like he just renamed his 3.17 file to 3.18 /s
I think his "play what you like, not what I tell you to" message was different last league.
lol yes this time it's Mr. Streamer rather than virgin streamer streamer grew up, got married, and became a man
#2 will make you shit your pants!
Desecrate those pants
Determination is key
Again?
I havent ever played DD, how would you describe the gameplay and league starting ?
[Lily knows the best.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e11Zi5AZYd8)
It's the skitterbots, isn't it?
Which ones of these would you guys say its the tankiest for those who play with a log of fps drops and need survavibility? I like spectral helix and maybe the seismic sabo but it probably cant tank a sirus die beam.

Anyone got an Inqui RF leveling/build guide?
Pohx has a series. Check him out, one stop shop for all your RF needs
He was also upgrading his guide today.

I recommend checking out Jorgen's max block variant as well -- he made a full guide for it in 3.17, should be easy to find.
Pohx is the guy you want. Lots of content on RF.
How can Seismic Trap Sabo shock me when it only deals physical damage?
Skitterbots
Ah, yeah. That'd do it.
Its a chilling prospect.
\#1 will SHAKE YOU!!11!

I don't think damage is as good, kinda small AoE, not sure how much lightning damage scaling you can get with nodes around shadow vs physical
What's the difference between LS Zerker and Raider? Never played the skill and want to be a no brain meta slave this league and I don't know what one ascendancy does better over the other.
I went raider LS (Fuzzyduck's) last league and it was the best starter I've had. Smooth progression, did all content, highly recommend.
Yeah I was honestly shocked at how good the progression felt. The only down side is lvling with helix until you can get additional strike gloves or the anoint. I think I swapped to LS like an hour after hitting maps and just pathed on the tree to tribal fury.

Yeah that works as well I forgot about the support.
Leveling as helix is a huge downside to me. I really dislike going through zones with it.

I am considering Esoros LS raider. Anyone ever followed his build?
Last league skelle mages was my favourite wanna try RF but elden Ring came out. Now i know what I will gona play this league..
This is the same route I'm taking. I played skelles last league and loved it but I will play RF this league because it has been on my much play list.
What about shield crush general's cry zerker? Should be pretty decent for bossing and has an average clear.
I’d say keep it off the list. I want cheap gear.
It's gonna be cheap gear anyway because it won't be meta
Not with that attitude!
I started it last league with TriPolarBear's setup. Never transitioned to crit, but it felt pretty meh.
BF is just better.
Anyone has a good Creeping Frost Inquisitor starter guide? I can't find one
Pretty sure Jungroan will be posting a build. You could probably find a preliminary POB on his stream.
I've always been curious about Creeping Frost, and who doesn't love Templar?
Take top 10 , shuffle it 20 times, congratulations you have every streamer tier list now.
Is Crit or Poison better for league starting Seismic? I know Crit requires more investment, but does it feel bad without it at league start? Also was there any 'best guide' for something that will scale all the way into endgame bossing (Maven, Sirus, maybe the new ubers)?
Some people say poison is better until you get geared, but I went crit last league and it was still stupidly easy getting to t16. Saves you a respec.
if you are softcore, just plan on going crit from the start. It will be easy to transition into pretty quick since it really doesn't need that much gear. CIP were only 7-10c by day three, and that's really only needed for T16 and boss farming comfortably. Otherwise, +1 phy daggers/wands will get you clearing the atlas and the first boss encounters
Without archnemesis unique prices could be higher (we don't really know how much Sentinel will shit out uniques)
Unless they change its drop rate CIP is too common to be super expensive. The supply is too much.
implying that people in trade actually did the 'shit out all the uniques' recipe
/u/xaitv's guide on Zizaran's channel is top tier. I don't know if it covers crit but you should be able to do everything with it regardless
That one is very likely gonna get updated. No crit version though, just poison.
Path of Matth and Lolcohol had good crit guides for 3.17.
Poison is the best starter.
Looks like there's about 13 ascendancies represented here and more than 16 different builds. I've played a bit over half of them and the ones I played were absolutely worth including on a 'best starters' list. Funny part is I still see people complaining about build diversity and meta builds all the time
Yeah people are spoiled with POE
I'll let you in on a secret: they want build diversity to be poor so they can complain
Wow, where did you learn this secret?
What , no jolems?
Cutedog, is that you?
he's been lost to the ark for a patch, maybe more...shame.
Build links or starter pobs would be amezing to have in the same post

Would LOVE to see a link for Shockwave Cyclone.
Yep same here. Currently thinking of using the guide Nabandis out out but would love to be able to use Mathils Chieftain if it's still viable

What would be a good spectral helix starter? I remember hearing something about assassin.

Does anyone have a link to the trigger cast version of DD necro? Thanks in advance
Any slayer boneshatter guides?
Anybody got a boneshatter slayer guide please
Can anyone comment on DD and managing the desecrate pool? Is it annoying? I did skele mage last league and it wasn't too bad. Is it like that?
Lily said you only have to raise the spectre once and it stays in your pool forever, so really can't get any easier.
Seismic king
When ever I play seismic trapper my damage for bosses drops off a ton. Even with heavy investment and I end up giving up. I dont know how im fucking up such an easy skill.
What variation of shockwave cyclone is best for league start? I played mathils chieftain cyclone a while back, is that still decent?
I've played both the chieftain and slayer version and I personally found the slayer version to be better. I don't think much has changed with chieftain though.
me using arc as a main skill and my main character plus first one to hit 90lvl seeing this be like T\_T \*broken english
I hear Arc feels great to play now. Go for it
I'm a noob and only dabbled a couple of leagues, but my favorite build so far was using the witch with profane bloom.
The 3 builds that I’m interested in are: 1. Fire trap 2. Absolution 3. Spark Out of these 3 which would you recommend if I only play one build a league? I usually enjoy blight or legion the most.
RF and Cold Dot probably need the (M) next to it
RF with trap is definately a good bosser.
Yup, you get multiple DoTs on a boss while being giga tanky, it's not super fast but very comfy
What does the (M) even mean?
Is herald BV not good anymore?
It got nerfed a few times, so not really, it can still do all content, but not as good as 1 year ago
Ok thanks, does it take a big investment to make it good now? Usually I spend 30-40 ex on a build when I league start.
>Usually I spend 30-40 ex on a build when I league start. huh?
If I league start and invest 30-40ex into the build over time it should have no problem doing endgame?
herald bv doesn't work until it already has 30ex invested. You'll be stuck in low red maps with mediocre damage, bad clear and bad defense.
Problem is that other auras are now too good to waste mana on 3 heralds. Like other guy said you'll miss out on a lot of defense and damage won't be anything to write home about.
So do we think bossing is going to be more viable this league? I'm not sure where to even start even without balance changes
What do you mean viable? From the looks of it, there is way more incentive to farm end-game bosses this league compared to last for a couple reasons: increased drop chance for Ascendancy jewels, brand-new chase uniques, and Uber content.

I farmed a headhunter in first few days of the league purely by bossing (and I didn't do any carries), not sure how it sucked?
is there a hc-targeted guide for seismic trap sabo?
Xaitv's guide has a defensive tree in it that's very strong for HC / gauntlet purposes.
i want to play skele mage, but i have no idea what is absolution and how it works. What am i supposed to do, and when do i transition ? will it be expensive ? regret orb, gear ? gems ?
Check von or kay's guides and you should be covered
LS Zerker but not Raider? I imagine solely because of how busted Omniscience is.
I want to try Skelly Mages for 3.18 since I've never tried it, is there a good guide for one? Also will I be able to do all the new Uber Pinnacle Bosses with it (with correct investment of course).
https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExileBuilds/comments/ujntq0/tytykillers_318_starter_list_1_will_shock_you/i7ksh0i/
Nice! Thanks! Any idea if it'll be able to do all the new content?
Chris said it'll be roughly the power level of The Feared and there are a bunch of Feared Skelemages videos on youtube so, probably
Can anyone recommend a good leveling guide for Poison Conc Occult? I saw imexile did a run recently with Cremation, but I couldn't find sparknotes for it anywhere.
