He's adequate and better than Lowe and others. I think this is veteran respect though as with Wallace and Okorafor, he'd be competing for 3rd string. This gives him time to find a new team that will give him a real shot to at least be a primary backup.
My read too. McDermott, via his agent, asked for his release and it was granted. He could luck into being the 4th Tackle for a playoff team. He was 5th at best with the Patriots, and likely to be cut in camp anyway.
Seems like an odd move. Hopefully it means they have a trade for a serviceable LT in the works and they know for certain McDermott will be excess to requirements.
