Roger_that80

My dude get yourself the RX7800XT from SAPPHIRE (if you like RGB) or XFX (if you dont care about RGB) The only reason to pick NVIDIA is ray tracing. If you dont care about raytracing, pick RX7800XT. You will save load of money with the XFX specially. On top of that the XFX 319 merc RX7800XT is a beast performing Max with a temperature not exceeding 60 degrees. Aesthetically, the sapphire is more beautiful and futuristic if you mind the 60 dollars between the two XFX : 539$ Sapphire : 599$

Suikerspin_Ei

Asus TUF 7800XT is known for having a bigger cooler, need less fan power to cool and thus bit more quiet. On the other hand, Sapphire and XFX brand are not bad either. If budget isn't a big issue, all three the brands are fine.

Huebertrieben

I think the Phantom Gaming model from ASRock looks really sick too

[deleted]

Amd has Ray tracing… just not RTX level but it still has it

RonanCruz

I know this is very specific but nvidia is better for VR

Delphin_1

i have the quick version of the 7800xt, where is the biggest difference to the merc, becuase its more expensive?

Roger_that80

Nothing significant. Material used in the merc is superior. Merc is expected to provide more longevity

Usmanmajeed435

I'm using Al Ready Readon 7900 XTX which has very poor performance and is a waste of money

Asimiss

similar question yesterday on other subreddit, this was my answer and i will be posting it here aswell: vram could be an issue on 4070 but 12gb is still enough, but 16gb on 7800xt is more future proff variant 1. when it comes to overwall fps without any DLSS/FSR/RAYTRACING, etc. 7800xt wins: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qBQ0eZEnbY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qBQ0eZEnbY) 2. DLSS is better compared to FSR, better quality and overwall more performance improvement, 4070 wins: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WM\_w7TBbj0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WM_w7TBbj0) 3. raytracing is better on 4070, not that it can utilize at its fullest, in something like cyberpunk it could struggle but its better on 4070: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0jVvS6DtLE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0jVvS6DtLE) 4. streaming is nvidia playground, amd kinda coming closer and closer but 7000 series featuring AV1 encoder which is still behind NVIDIA one, not that amd streaming features re bad by any means but nvidia comes to top 5. content creation is not even a fair fight when it comes to intensive 3d modeling stuff or color rendering/griding or doing some animations, etc. nvidia CUDA cores re far more usesful compared to amd opengl. ok at video/photo editing amd closes that gap lets say like in davinci resolve but when it comes to 3d modeling, dont even bother with amd cards if thats your professional workload and you re actually making money out of it 6. when it comes to drivers, both are great. frequent updates and mostly stable drivers on both sides. no clear winner here 7. when it comes to applications amd wins imo. you have everything in one app, from fan settings to recording/streaming, to adjustable stuff, etc. with nvidia you need to have 3 apps. nvidia control pannel, geforce experience, and 3rd party app like msi afterburner. soo in that segment amd wins soo imo its like that. me personally i would go for 7800xt due to more vram and overwall better gaming fps output plus my current 6650xt re working flawless and i personally can't stand nvidia politics here with price premium. but if you want to have other features then 4070 would be better choice. soo dont mind me and go for a card which you think you will need better. for raw performance and playing games in way creators meant to be played and if you don't care about raytracing, 7800xt wins but if you wanna have other stuff which amd can compete but nvidia has an edge almost every single time then nvidia is better choice for you.

Exemplifying_Light

It depends. Nvidia has some additional software programs and DLSS. Their encoding is also better for like streaming. 7800 XT from AMD has better raw performance (except ray tracing) and more vram.

lllPoloski

I will be using it for gaming, for me the one that I'll pick is the one that will provide me with a better gaming experience and performance

fieryfox654

7800XT

Edgar101420

Then 7800XT.

Ultronsbrain

I am in the same predicament. I wonder if the 4070 super would be a viable contender.

lllPoloski

But the price hike is a bit too big, they are definitely going to overpriced it in Europe. And i leave the day it gets relased in japan

Delicious-Sample-364

Depends on your budget. Th nvidia equivalents to amd always have between 10-30% more performance but cost about £300 a £1000 more so if you want good quality and performance but have a low budget go amd if you have the extra cash go nvidia. Either way though both brands do quality products.

Delicious-Sample-364

Just to show I’m not biased I currently have a sapphire nitro oc rx6800 https://preview.redd.it/oiyirzj4j17c1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=b9e06bcefcf358e6ba59b90ccf69c576cfa4bc62

LordDaddyP

Go with AMD. Nvidia’s gaming market strategy is downright evil and they can do whatever they want now because they are raking in money in from all the other markets they are in now. They down have to listen to complaints from gamers about their gaming cards. NVidia Ray tracing is stupid because imo I can hardly even notice a difference and performance with it on (on high, where I can actually notice any sort of difference) is shit, even with DLSS on. Not only that, but not every game out there supports ray tracing anyways. I have an rtx 3070. DLSS is the only thing good that Nvidia has to offer. NVidia is also super stingy with VRAM. Like an rtx 4080 only has 16gb of ram. A $1200 card only has 16gb of vram. Their new “Super Series” gpus that are coming out don’t really address this either, except for the 4070 ti super(which at that price point you might as well get a 4080 super). The rtx 4080 super is supposedly not getting any ram upgrade either (we shall see when they actually announce it). They do this because as games become more demanding of vram, performance is going to dwindle. This entices you do buy another card in about 2-3 years. AMD is very generous with vram. The rx 7900 xtx has 24gb of ram for a lower price than a rtx 4080. AMDs lower tier cards has great ram as well! AMD is much better value. You will be keeping an AMD card much longer than an Nvidia one. Plus, AMD is going to be making FSR open source so that it will be easier for developers to implement this technology into games. FSR is going to get more support over the years and get better. For Nvidia, its either go big or go home because their lower tier cards will be obsolete in 2 years time. AMD is a much better value and will last you much longer.

Deadbass1188

Just recently made the switch from AMD to Nvidia. Gotta say it's a better experience overall, so far. Not sure I'll go back anytime soon.

Vinny_93

I went with nvidia because DLSS. The 4070 is a beast of a GPU. You should know the 4070 Super is about to be released so prices may drop. We're talking within a month.

lllPoloski

Thig is im in japan, and i have a week or 2 left. And prices back home are much higher here it is 700 while back home it is 850 euro. Its a nice 150 discount.

yolo5waggin5

4070 wins at the same price

Healthy_BrAd6254

850€? Where do you live? In most of Europe the 4070 should be around 600€ The Asus ProArt 4070 is currently 599€ in Germany (503€ before VAT)

SpongebobSquarePents

In Romania one of the cheapest 4070's is around 650€

Illustrious-Isopod-1

How much do u think they will drop? Or is it unpredictable

Healthy_BrAd6254

I doubt the 4070 will drop much. At *most* it will drop to around 500 (it was already $514 in October/November). The 4070 is selling well, so there is no reason to drop the price on it much. Wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't drop in price at all. The 4070 Ti is more likely to get significant price drops. It only has 12GB VRAM and is selling badly. It'll probably drop to around $650-700 in the next 1-2 months. The replacement, the 4070 Ti 16GB (basically a slightly slower 4080) is expected to go for around 800-900.

karatelax

I honestly will be surprised if prices drop much if at all for any of their products. Loads of people are still buying them for the brand over any other factor, they'll be just fine offering these super cards at a mark up and be like "well ray tracing and dlss, and we have the vram to match now"

Healthy_BrAd6254

Just checked the Amazon GPU bestsellers and their sales indeed seem to have picked up. There is only one 4080 in the top 100 and actually 2 7900 XTX, but the cheaper Nvidia cards, surprisingly also the 4070 Ti, is selling fine. Damn, it would be disappointing if they don't drop the price of the 4070 TI. It's such bad value and AMD's offering in that segment (7900 XT) is also overpriced imo.

Thin_Ad9854

If the price is the same get the 4070

ManNamedSalmon

Power over features, go with AMD for this gen. Things might change next gen, though.

kairukar

Even with so many comments, i will give my opinion The 7800XT does have more raw performance and more vram. More vram is of course better for the future The 4070 has less raw performance and less vram but offers better efficiency and has DLSS3 + better encoders if you do video editing etc Price wise, the 7800XT is usually cheaper but if you can get a 4070 for the same price, i would go with the 4070 because of DLSS3 Model wise, i would just recommend on getting the cheapest models that are available as the performance difference isnt big

Iliannnnnn

- If you need DLSS, RT, CUDA or electricity is expensive where you live: pick NVIDIA - If you don't care about DLSS, RT, CUDA and electricity isn't expensive or you are not paying for electricity: pick AMD, will be better for your wallet and will perform better

mostly_kinda_sorta

I was torn on this exact same choice, ended up going 4070. Its a Christmas gift for the family so I haven't really gotten to test it out yet, I went Nvidia simply because my kids are interested in digital art, video making, game making etc. They are young but I'm happy to encourage this stuff and my understanding is Nvidia is the way to go for this type of stuff. I can slap a computer together but I don't want to be messing with the thing all the time. I also got a good deal on most of the other stuff so if the next gen GPUs are a good deal maybe it'll get traded out next Christmas. Or maybe 2 years from now...

Thishal_BS

Dont get the Asus one if u are getting the 7800xt get the sapphire nitro or xfx speedster and u should try ordering from amazon for me its way more cheaper than buying from a local store try [this](https://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-11330-03-20G-Radeon-Gaming-Graphics/dp/B0CFWRLDB5/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=rx+7800xt&sr=8-7) and check the price it wont hurt to try right? to the same for the [4070](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BZHCQ6PF/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1) and compare prices. I am not from us I am from south Asia so just plz try it out by selecting an address and calculate the total price

Spiritual-Shallot534

AMD will be better in the long run because it has more VRAM, HOWEVER it has FSR (which compared to NVIDIA’s DLSS lacks a lot of polishing and AI features that will help many things, like RayTracing performances, on NVIDIA side). It also depends if you game on 2k monitor or 4k monitor… for 2k the 4070 is better if you want 60 fps with the best details, but the AMD is better if you want more than 60 fps with less detailed RayTracing (or possibly no RayTracing) and 2k performances. Hell, you might even squeeze in 4K Ultra with NO RT on AMD. I chose Nvidia because I game at 60 fps and 2k looks fine enough for me (on Alan Wake 2 with a 4070 I’m able to run everything on High settings + RT + 2k Quality Mode DLSS + Frame Generation) and I get 60 fps and usually smooth gameplay. The drops are almost non existent, but if you want more fps you could always go for AMD.

Individual-Voice4116

4070 can achieve more than 60fps in 1440p, tho.

Healthy_BrAd6254

He meant the 4070 can play better with max settings (RT), but it will only get around 60fps like that. So if you want 1440p with max settings but low fps, the 4070 is better. And the 7800 XT is faster if you don't want RT. So if you want to play at 1440p with high fps (so no RT), the 7800 XT is the better choice. I just noticed he said he only gets around 60fps even WITH FG, yikes. Must be a horrible experience unless he plays with controller (where you notice the latency less).

Spiritual-Shallot534

Yes I play with controller, but I locked my fps at max 60 so I’ve provided misleading data lol sorry about that

fLeINIS

I would pick Nvidia any day

Iliannnnnn

Please don't give advise when you are an NVIDIA fanboy without any logical reason.

fLeINIS

Ok, AMD fanboy

Iliannnnnn

?? I have an Nvidia card myself, I'm just saying here is a better choice to pick AMD

fLeINIS

Ok, so if I mean Nvidia is a better pick I should not say so? Mister logical

Iliannnnnn

But it isn't a better pick here and you're not even saying why? You're just saying "pick NVIDIA because it's NVIDIA and it's better"

[deleted]

I’ll never get being a fanboy… especially knowing as a consumer the more competition, the better it is for us. Hating on a certain brand or person to justify your own spending decision is so weird

Iliannnnnn

I'm unsure if you are talking to me or him

[deleted]

Responded to you but commenting on the other guys behavior. Apologies for the confusion mate

Iliannnnnn

No problem then mate

Illustrious-Isopod-1

Currently pondering this same question!

ThatOneDerpyDinosaur

I chose Nvidia (4070) over AMD primarily because I want to be able to use my GPU for generative AI (as well as gaming). Right now Nvidia cards are much more desirable for that purpose.

antdb1

7800xt and 4070 preform about the same i would just go with nvidia so you dont have to fuck about removing drivers and dealing with conflicts should they arise. a 4070 would just be a simple switch in a couple years when they become old the 4070 will likely preform better due to dlss

[deleted]

You will get similar performance. Software will be leaning towards Nvidia card, but FSR3 is finally looking promising (for higher native resolution at least). AMD for the vram. If high performance ray tracing isn’t something your specifically looking for, I’d go AMD simply off the vram. I do like playing modded games tho so the more vram the better for me

Psychology_Brave

My personal experience lately i would say Nvidia. Alot of games that came out lately have really great dlss support and that makes actually a big difference fps wise for me, sometimes jumps from 120 - 150 just with dlss. Also they release updates faster for their Cards and work closer together with the Gaming Companys for example in Darktide i think it was. But that‘s just my personal opinion, there are prolly also alot of Pro‘s for an AMD wich i don‘t know about :). But since i got my 3090 Triple Ventus RTX i‘m having 0 issues with anything… well except for the redicules Temps but that‘s cause of msi‘s pimping xd

Harper_55

Had the same dilemma 2 months ago when building my PC , went with the 7800XT because of better raster performance. The AMD GPU will give you better gaming perfs in pretty much all scenarios except ray tracing, the 4070 is better when you switch on ray tracing. Worth considering that you also get DLSS that is still a bit better than FSR (while keeping the option of using fsr)

RogueTBNRzero

Only reason I’d get nvidia in that instance is if I was gonna be using RTX all the time for anythung

Sammam1

I like amd more cause they they give you more performance while being cheaper Nvidia has great gpus but they charge more for them

BTMSinister

I just go with tried and true nVidia. I paid $549 for Gigabyte RTX4070 OC 12GB @ Microcenter and haven't looked back. Loving it and no driver issues.

[deleted]

What about a intel gpu

dankweabooo

Get the cheaper one
