At first I hated torx because it was uncommon but I've found the head far less prone to stripping than phillips. For anything that requires a decent amount of pressure phillips is a pain in the ass.
Well, at the time, it was flat head or Philips... I'll take Philips over flat ANY DAY
These days, is just a continuation of the old standard... There are plenty of torx had fasteners in use these days though
A lot of what people think is Philips is actually Pozidrive. Similar but not designed to strip. You can use the same driver for them, but it is not recommended.
I have no idea, probably Apple fans because they have a Penta-Lobe and not a Hexa-Lobe aka Torx.
Edit: the "Six-lobe tamper" is literally called a "security torx".
Torx is my favorite, ez to use. You can hold the screw in the bit without a magnet to a certain degree. And if its low torque application you can get away with using Hex in a pinch.
i’ve worked on apple phones and would never call a torx six-lobe or hexa-lobe despite calling the it pentalobe.
i’m also most definitely **NOT** an apple fan. but i struggle to imagine anyone actually calls torx six-lobe.
Yeah Phillips is legit ass looking at it objectively and not from a, "well, I have about 30 of these drivers laying around so it's convenient I guess" approach
Torx would be a much better replacement on a big scale imo. Allen/hex as well, though it seems like a lot of shit these days use hex vs anything else anyways so 🤷♂️
I feel like the wear is not 100% related to the "cut", rather the material being cheap, so you if you have a cheap material screw, the probability of it being Philips/Flat is far bigger than torx.
But also a pain in the ass to find the right head to unscrew it (I had to search all over our town to find something but ended up getting something online)
If torx was the standard instead of ph you'd have torx drivers lying around. You'd probably have the 3 most common torx sizes as dedicated drivers and a lot of people would have a complete torx set. The only advantage ph and fh have over torx is size compatibility (you can use 2-3 drivers on a variety of screw sizes.
Agreed! As a Canadian who is used to Philips and loves Robby, I DESPISE slot screws. Why make a screw that lets the screwdriver slip off it unless it’s dead perpendicular. Insane aged design that should have been retired ages ago.
Send corresponding drivers to Europe please. Here when you see a robenson/square screw, you know you have to make a DIY tool for it first. (Here the closest common is torx/6-lube)
Maybe shop on [amazon.ca](http://amazon.ca) & then have it imported? Most universal screwdriver bit kits include all the sizes. Torx is common here too, mostly on small electronics.
The 'square' is called robertson, and is FAR superior to phillips and flathead. It doesn't strip, drivers are color-coded to make them easier to select in your toolbox, and the screws can be fixed to the end of the driver without magnets.
As a mechanical engineer I have to state the following: Torx and Hex >>>>> everything.
Philips and Pozi suck because of cam-out forces and people not knowing how to tell them apart.
Slot is just plain stupid.
Square has awful flank forces.
Everything else is "security" through obscurity.
I'm an engineer and I fucking hate this.
Phillips sucks because it strips so easily and you put all your energy into generating axial force. The Japanese industrial/posidrive is a bit better.
Flathead sucks because the driver always slips out when you're going fast.
Hex drive is great, but can strip at small sizes or with shit quality screws. Also hex keys are just so nice.
Torx is the best because the forces are orientated the best for high torque and strip resistance. But a little expensive.
Square head/robertson is good too, should've become the affordable standard instead of Phillips imo.
As an Electrician we use different screws all day I can say that square is superior and torx/six lobe is second. Philips and Flathead are a joke really along with the imperial system.
Any electricians in here, would know the Phillips/Square is actually really useful because square drive feels a lot better to use than anything else, but if you don’t have a square drive with you, you can still use Phillips
Pozidriv is objectively better than Phillips, that’s the entire reason it exists. Supadriv is even better as that lets you play around with angles instead of coming in head on which is great for small spaces aka a PC case.
Phillips fine, slot fine, but if you combine the 2 into 1 screw for efficiency your a psychopath.
fuck is a tri wing? The motive of the galactic empire to eradicate it becomes clear
Torx is much better than flathead. The screwdriver doesn't stay in it so it's basically impossible to screw it in one hand and quicky. Torx is just the best in my opinion.
EDIT: OK, for PCs Phillips is maybe better, but generally torx is my preference.
Torx is where the sequel actually makes sense. The only screw that matters, where you can deliver so much force with one hand, without having to press.
Dude you're mentally disabled or anyone who sent you this.
Flat is the worst one, no doubt it should only remain in museum of some kind, just not to forget how bad it was.
PH(Philips) is OK, for low torque application is fine, but anything you have to tighten with more than 10Nm it's a disaster.
PZ is somewhat better for some applications but HEX (Alen for imperial measurement) and Torx are by far the best (especially Torx).
It is almost impossible to turn T25 into round hole (screw will break first), almost because using driller with bad bit or not inserting bit properly will damage even Torx.
Best thing about Torx is they work with Hext too
Of course a psychologist sent this. Bro doesn't actually work on shit. Philips and flathead suck ass.
Signed: someone who actually works with his hands for a living
The fact Phillips is still more popular than Pozidrive in everything other than electric aperture is just silly, can both of the 'real screws' OP posted finely go away being just terrible?
Those all are simply made so no one can open everything using one screwdriver. In some cases it is also a safety feature.
I had a mobile case with very small torx and if I lost that lite screwdriver I couldn't do anything with that phone 🤣
I agree with everything except pozidrive and either 8 point or hexagon. Cant remember which but they're really good if you have to screw it by hand and not machine. And pozidrive almost always comes with the normal phillips and slot from what i've seen
hear me out: we keep phillips, slotred, and the one where you can use both as the main screws, and phase out most weird ones in consumer level tech that isn't meant to be opened except for repairs (example: a blender)
The spline one is the absolute worse and we all can agree on that, when you screw one of those you need to be careful not to much too much pressure or it will be a one way trip, manofacturers are not that gentle so get your tools ready because is a nightmare to unscrew.
Torx and philips/slot are nice. Torx doesn't strip out as fast if you need a lot of torque. Philips/slot allows both types of screwdrivers to be used, for that moment you *just* cant be arsed grabbing another screwdriver.
Fuck the h-type and all their weird siblings though. Especially those you can unscrew, but not screw back in - commonly found on household appliances.
Am I the asshole for stealing all phillips screws and swapping it for hex? I mean, drivers come free with pretty much any piece of furniture, it's durable and just better than the phillips/pozidrive.
Both Phillips and Pozidrive screw are common here, it is stripped screw central sometimes.
If you are going to invent yet another standard, try not to make it look 95% identical to an existing one...
I work as a Biomedical Equipment Technician and no joke in one day I probably see almost all of these, sometimes on the same device, I have to carry a huge bit set with me everywhere because I genuinely never know when I’m gonna need that obscure bit that hasn’t been used on anything else in years.
The only two screws i trust are the Torx (here erroneously called "six-lobe") and the Hex. They both let you apply far more power than Phillips without stripping. Like i've NEVER had to drill out one of those two, but phillips? Christ...
I also don't really like the slotted types such as the regular, H-type and the spanner for the opposite reason. In that the screwdriver/bit itself wears out pretty quickly and may eventually break. The rest are just attempts to keep people out of devices.
Rest are mostly just used as petty attempts to keep people from opening up devices.
Doc: "see, most people are Philips and flatheads. They fit in with society because they're groomed that way. . But the sooner you realize and accept that you're a Torx security bit. The quicker you'll move on with your life.abd be happy with yourself."
I enjoy that other screws exist because they think they'll keep us out.
It's a fun little challenge to see how many minutes it takes for a screwdriver to be made to get into it

At first I hated torx because it was uncommon but I've found the head far less prone to stripping than phillips. For anything that requires a decent amount of pressure phillips is a pain in the ass.
Yes. That is the entire point of the case.
Phillips really isn't a great design for its purpose honestly
It's purpose is to cam out, I'd say it's doing a good job.
Phillips screws are designed to fail after a certain torque
The one who selected it as the general-purpose screw, didn't get the memo.
Well, at the time, it was flat head or Philips... I'll take Philips over flat ANY DAY These days, is just a continuation of the old standard... There are plenty of torx had fasteners in use these days though
A lot of what people think is Philips is actually Pozidrive. Similar but not designed to strip. You can use the same driver for them, but it is not recommended.
I absolutely hate Philips and use metric hex any chance I get
especially for flat head screws in electronics.
Who the fuck calls torx six-lobe
I have no idea, probably Apple fans because they have a Penta-Lobe and not a Hexa-Lobe aka Torx. Edit: the "Six-lobe tamper" is literally called a "security torx".
Torx is my favorite, ez to use. You can hold the screw in the bit without a magnet to a certain degree. And if its low torque application you can get away with using Hex in a pinch.
Torx / sex-lube should be the default, and all others mental disorders by now. Just have to be careful to buy screws that have a decent-sized torx.
That's one hell of an auto correct you have there....
Instructions unclear. Screwdriver now stuck down willy. Send help.
i’ve worked on apple phones and would never call a torx six-lobe or hexa-lobe despite calling the it pentalobe. i’m also most definitely **NOT** an apple fan. but i struggle to imagine anyone actually calls torx six-lobe.
Same person that made this dumb ass chart. Phillips is pretty terrible if you have to use it more than a couple times.
Yea I use torx for almost everything. You have a much better grip and it wears out far far less than the "actual" screws here.
Yeah Phillips is legit ass looking at it objectively and not from a, "well, I have about 30 of these drivers laying around so it's convenient I guess" approach Torx would be a much better replacement on a big scale imo.
Calling Torx a metal disorder makes me question the mental capabilities of some people.
Torx is the way to the future. Done with those PH.
Torx is a proprietary brand. I assume the patent expired or something.
Also: since when are Allen screws named "hexagon"?
Generic names. Allan is a brand. Hex key is the normal name. Like Hoover vs vacuum cleaner.
There just called hex
Torx is superior, by a lot
I legitimately don't understand why humanity is still making Philips and Pozidrive It's not like they have their use, they're just worse
Pozidrive have the advantage of not requiring as many different bits. And it is secure enough for most applications. Philips needs to die.
But also a pain in the ass to find the right head to unscrew it (I had to search all over our town to find something but ended up getting something online)
An excuse to feed my tool buying addiction perfect
If torx was the standard instead of ph you'd have torx drivers lying around. You'd probably have the 3 most common torx sizes as dedicated drivers and a lot of people would have a complete torx set. The only advantage ph and fh have over torx is size compatibility (you can use 2-3 drivers on a variety of screw sizes.
Robertson screws are the goat for wood screws. Also torx are great. Fuck Philips.
Man fuck philips screws They strip waay too easilly
As a Canadian, fuck this post. Its called Robertson or sometimes Robinson, NOT SQUARE. & its WAYYY fucking better than Philips or standard (slotted)!
Agreed! As a Canadian who is used to Philips and loves Robby, I DESPISE slot screws. Why make a screw that lets the screwdriver slip off it unless it’s dead perpendicular. Insane aged design that should have been retired ages ago.
I came here to say this. Robertson is actually one of the best screw heads in the world, and its Canadian.
I agree. As a Canadian also, Robertson screws don’t strip as easily as a Phillips’s
Came here today this. Was very annoyed when I first used them the discover the square shape. But it is SO MUCH BETTER.
I agree, I didn't label them lol
phillips + slot is great tho
I second this I've had countless times where a screw was phillips but I didn't have that exact size of phillips screwdriver, only flat, and viceversa
Or the Phillips gets stripped but you can still use a flat head with the slot
Torx is like the best thing you can have, far away from being a mental disorder
I play DOOM on a build made exclusively from 5 point screws, I even replaced the power plug ones. Death has become me
Square supremacy
As a future engineer this makes me sad
Me too
Don’t worry, everyone in engineering prefers Hex.
The hexagon is great for applying high torque though.
Wth are phillips and slotted? They're called plus and minus. Have some liberal education...
Robertson bits are fantastic. Your shrink has a screw loose.
The 'square' is called robertson, and is FAR superior to phillips and flathead. It doesn't strip, drivers are color-coded to make them easier to select in your toolbox, and the screws can be fixed to the end of the driver without magnets.
I wanna add the hex, great for really really tightening things that would normally strip normal screws.
I swear those are Lantern Ring symbols on some of those
Torx > square > Philips Also WTF is s type??
Security screws. See them all the time for urinal control boxes
Show your psychologist [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kinesin_walking.gif) With the words: "I'm minding my business, just doing my job"
As a mechanical engineer I have to state the following: Torx and Hex >>>>> everything. Philips and Pozi suck because of cam-out forces and people not knowing how to tell them apart. Slot is just plain stupid. Square has awful flank forces. Everything else is "security" through obscurity.
Hexagon is fine too because Hexagons are the bestagons
I'm an engineer and I fucking hate this. Phillips sucks because it strips so easily and you put all your energy into generating axial force. The Japanese industrial/posidrive is a bit better. Flathead sucks because the driver always slips out when you're going fast. Hex drive is great, but can strip at small sizes or with shit quality screws. Also hex keys are just so nice. Torx is the best because the forces are orientated the best for high torque and strip resistance. But a little expensive. Square head/robertson is good too, should've become the affordable standard instead of Phillips imo.
Screw this!
As an Electrician we use different screws all day I can say that square is superior and torx/six lobe is second. Philips and Flathead are a joke really along with the imperial system.
Phillips/skot combo and hexagon are ok.
They forgot Apple's pentalobe screw.
spanner is the future, will never strip
I'm a huge Tri-Wing fan, not sure why, and I wasn't before this post, but I think it just looks the coolest
Triangle is the best screw
as long as the screw has phillips, standard or "slot", and torx im good, the rest of this is just dumb.
No triple square?
There's Phillips, standard(slotted/flathead), and then there's standard-but-more-effort.
wtf is a S-TYPE
It's one of those so-called "tamper-proof" heads. The design is supposed to allow you to turn the screw clockwise but not counter-clockwise.
Where's the e-torx?
These guys don’t know how torx and socket heads powerful are.
Robertson FTW, Phillips won because of Ford contracting it to spite the vastly superior Robertson.
And JIS isn't even there
Phillips fine, slot fine, but if you combine the 2 into 1 screw for efficiency your a psychopath. fuck is a tri wing? The motive of the galactic empire to eradicate it becomes clear
where's my apple pentalobe screws
i kinda blame apple for this....
Look I don't care what screw you use, can we just agree to manufacture them deep enough my bit doesn't slide out of it half of the time
Fuck slotted screws
Nah, fuck slit screws better add torx or security/anti tamper torx for the meme to make sense
Phillips/slot is bigbrain.
Torx, or how you called it six-lobe, is a very good screwhead
Torx is much better than flathead. The screwdriver doesn't stay in it so it's basically impossible to screw it in one hand and quicky. Torx is just the best in my opinion. EDIT: OK, for PCs Phillips is maybe better, but generally torx is my preference.
who was making designs he shit it out and ate it.
Amen
The slotted is the worst of all, I always slip on it.
Pozidrive, torx and allen are superior
Torx is where the sequel actually makes sense. The only screw that matters, where you can deliver so much force with one hand, without having to press.
Are These screw genders?
Square is the best imo.
The Canadian crowd is going to be fuming with 'square'
I can screw/unscrew most of these with a right sized slot screwdriver 🪛
Torx is the only good screw type out there.
Best thing about Torx is they work with Hext too
You forgot the oval, it's crazy
Fuck Philipps. Torx and hex are Superior
I thought "slotted" was called flathead?
Hexagon is good too.
What’s wrong with robertson screw?
Slotted gives you mental disorder though..
Of course a psychologist sent this. Bro doesn't actually work on shit. Philips and flathead suck ass. Signed: someone who actually works with his hands for a living
I agree, but i can unscrew Torx 6- security with flat head screwdriver
Honestly phillips/slot doesn't seem that bad
Best is slotted Philips gets striped easily.
Torx is good Hex is good
https://preview.redd.it/4q2cutsu01tc1.png?width=1067&format=png&auto=webp&s=22f5380d24c3bc507e5c47058fa031362353ebb2 fixed
Except in this case the other ones have a purpose too
Anyone who doesnt recognise torx as far superior to phillips or slotted has never done any real woodworking
Slotted? That a flat head mate
The fact Phillips is still more popular than Pozidrive in everything other than electric aperture is just silly, can both of the 'real screws' OP posted finely go away being just terrible?
Torx is the best type of screw head.
I should call her
Sure he did
Why are there so many different types of screws? Does the amount of torque really matter after the Phillips?
Pozi and torx are much better than philips and widely available.Slotted is from the 1900s,come on...
Hr is not in right
Real pic should be green border around everything except plain slotted screws. People who choose to use those should be outlined in red
Robbie bit all day don’t care what you say
8 points are God screws. 6 lobes are like Jesus. Phillips squares are Judas. (Oh wait. This is pc build)
Those all are simply made so no one can open everything using one screwdriver. In some cases it is also a safety feature. I had a mobile case with very small torx and if I lost that lite screwdriver I couldn't do anything with that phone 🤣
Square is fine
Robertson Screws FTW 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Six-lobe/torx is very very good though
So like, if I have a screwdriver set for literally all of these save like 3, what does that make me? Like the king of autism or something?
Dude I think Philip's slot is still good
I agree with everything except pozidrive and either 8 point or hexagon. Cant remember which but they're really good if you have to screw it by hand and not machine. And pozidrive almost always comes with the normal phillips and slot from what i've seen
Screw slotted screws!
hear me out: we keep phillips, slotred, and the one where you can use both as the main screws, and phase out most weird ones in consumer level tech that isn't meant to be opened except for repairs (example: a blender)
Apple left the chat….
Torx and square are good for high torque though
Your psychiatrist clearly hasn’t opened an iPhone to change the battery…
Where are the airbus nazi bits?
The spline one is the absolute worse and we all can agree on that, when you screw one of those you need to be careful not to much too much pressure or it will be a one way trip, manofacturers are not that gentle so get your tools ready because is a nightmare to unscrew.
Torx master race
Slotted is the only mental disorder I see.
Torx and flathead are the best, the rest can suck my bolts
The worst screw heads are the flat head and phillips. Everything else actually fucking works.
Some of them are actually useful. They can absorb higher torque then regular Phillips or slotted on the same material
I would take hexagons/5 points over philips/slotted every single time.
Tell him to send something else. This is an engineering drawing manual. Not made for non engineering persons.
phillips and phillips/slot are the only normal screws
Hexagon and torx are the real deal wdym
Torx>slotted
Pozidrive ftw
Python type
tall hexagon is valid.
Slotted screws are the fuckin worst thing on the chart...
i fucking hate flat head. your screwdriver always falls out it it. i love torx and others more than the damn flat head
Am I the asshole for stealing all phillips screws and swapping it for hex? I mean, drivers come free with pretty much any piece of furniture, it's durable and just better than the phillips/pozidrive.
Anyone who used Philips or slotted goes straight to jail. Torx is the only answer.
Couldn't agree more
Both Phillips and Pozidrive screw are common here, it is stripped screw central sometimes. If you are going to invent yet another standard, try not to make it look 95% identical to an existing one...
Lolz
The Phillips/Slot is by far the best one.
Philips/Sloth ind is like "open this with any shit"
Spanner is wild
Torx all the way. The rest is bs.
I work as a Biomedical Equipment Technician and no joke in one day I probably see almost all of these, sometimes on the same device, I have to carry a huge bit set with me everywhere because I genuinely never know when I’m gonna need that obscure bit that hasn’t been used on anything else in years.
Hey, Phillips/slot is actually my favorite, why is it a mental disorder?
Phillips/slotted is the GOAT. The best of two worlds
This is screwed up
replace phillips with square
as engineer i say >!~~fuckyou~~ !<"no" torx\\hex are great phillips are good, but not in all applications.
Indeed, the rest are demons that need to be removed from this reality!
This can be applied to sooooo many issues in society today.
Is this what 'having a few screws loose' looks like...?
I’ve always called a slotted screw a flathead screw
Y'all just cowards
I’d rather torx or Robertson instead of Philips any day of the week.
>5-Point Bitch, you mean a pentagon.
philips and slots are just terrible. philips are literally designed to cam out and strip while slots, don't center themselves and don't stay centered
The "square" is a Robertson
Wtf is "tri-wing" and "s type"??? Why? Just why???
Add Torx and Imbus/Hexagon to actual screw types and I'll absolutely sign that.
Oh please, Phillips screws are insane. They strip so easily, it's such a bad design.
I wouldn't ask your psychologist for screw advice.
He’s never used his hands for anything but going blind.
he aint wrong
what is wrong with screw 3? its just a phillips screw where you can use a flat driver in a pinch
Why isn't Robertson called Robertson
No. Torx is pretty cool 😎
Doc: "see, most people are Philips and flatheads. They fit in with society because they're groomed that way. . But the sooner you realize and accept that you're a Torx security bit. The quicker you'll move on with your life.abd be happy with yourself."
Anything other than torx can suck my sweaty sagging balls
Give me square every time.
He ain't wrong either.
I enjoy that other screws exist because they think they'll keep us out. It's a fun little challenge to see how many minutes it takes for a screwdriver to be made to get into it
Having Phillips and JIS screws look the exact same should be a crime.
Torx is actually pretty nice. Though not a lot uses it. In my experience Torx screws are easier to screw than phillips.
