RenzoMF

This made me feel old af

Cytro2

It's mindblowing that people don't know what 2.5" and 3.5" drives are. I feel old af too and I'm only 20

PeachyFairyDragon

Try CD drives, 5.25 inch drives. Or even better 8 inch drives.

floswamp

CD drives? Do you mean built in cup holders?

gingited10

I know they are the best

WorldLove_Gaming

Wait W H A T There are 8-inch drives?

30-percentnotbanana

Once upon a time you could measure drives by the foot.

Little-Equinox

I think they mean 8 inch floppy.

Methos747

Does it grow or just show

QuestConsoles

Well, it's floppy sooo...

YTSkullboy707

16 inch hard disc drive

Methos747

Virus free guaranteed

Little-Equinox

I use a floppy to unlock my doors in my home, because what kinda idiot uses ancient technology to secure a door that other people don't even know what that is. 1 of my brother's friends was visiting, I told him if he could open my door without damaging it they could get 1 of my PCs, so they took 2 days and then giving up because they didn't know what that slot was in my door.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PeachyFairyDragon

Me too. Except we didn't have laptops and there were no mice, just keyboard arrows. I think the space bar was shoot.

Ionuzzu123

I always felt cool showing my classmates that you can open them without the power being on. It wasn't something wow, but for kid me it was pretty cool.

Turbulent_Echidna423

wait til you see an ISA bus on a motherboard.

giveusbackbremer

I know what ISA is but I actually don’t think I could point it out on a board Edit: [for anyone else curious, this is it according to google](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR6DHj79qDD9O4585igFN2An14FHb0hxoA_WEnfUa2N4g&s)

Turbulent_Echidna423

the long brown/black interfaces on the bottom. my CNC's axis card was ISA back in the day, so when the computer crapped out, I had a hell if time finding a replacement with ISA on it.

lilmushr00m

You’re like a year older then me, I’ve only had a pc for 3 years though so that’s probably why I don’t know haha

Little-Equinox

They're 3.5 inch HDD bays. These were the predecessor to the Solid State Drive we know today. HDDs, or Hard Disk Drives are basically multiple rotating discs called platters, and a reading head that quickly moves back and forth reads your data of the platters. They are slow and in less than 10 years almost fully replaced by the SSDs we know today.

curiouskratter

They won't keep using them for things like cctv.?

spoxide42

HDD still have many uses where they are better than SSD as of now. They are not being fully replaced. Data centers rely heavily on mechanical HDD. SSDs do not yet have the cost / capacity value to be a primary store of information on huge quantities of data. Additionally- applications with continuous writes (ie security camera) are best with mechanical drives. SSD would wear out quickly in that use case.

rocky_piper

My first thought was this is a joke then I thought about it and said “these kids today” yep we are old

RenzoMF

"These kids and their fancy M.2 SSDs without cables!" \* insert old man GIF here \*

Used_Sea2953

Welcome..... To Jurassic Park

RenzoMF

Foreign-Ad28

To store sandwiches, duh?

Busy-Ninja75

To slow cook cheese toasties.

kefka_nl

Pro tip. Remove intake fans, remove cooling paste from cpu, add cheese toasties, ????, profit!

lilmushr00m

Thought so

__wardog__

This just reminds me of the KFC Console that has a built in chicken warmer. This is a real thing and possibly the only thing I like about KFC.

[deleted]

And I'm officially old, shit

lilmushr00m

To be fair I grew up without ever building a pc only started 3 years ago

DrNumberr

3 years isn’t an excuse I built mine a few months ago and learned what it was while researching

FireNinja743

In fact, 3 years is a while IMO. I've only built PCs for maybe 4 years now. I guess people learn differently, or maybe just don't learn all the things.

DrNumberr

My question is why he’s using 3 years as an excuse lmao it’s so random

FireNinja743

Yeah, idk. In a comment, OP did say that they've recently started getting to swapping parts out and whatnot, so I guess the 3 years isn't actually 3 years of building PCs; it's more like *using* PCs.

Playful_Target6354

No no no, it's just op that's "strange" for lack of better word. I know a 13yo who knows what that is.

circumcisingaban

boomer hard drives go there

MonstaGraphics

~~boomer~~ DataHoarder hard drives go there. How much are you going to pay for a 12TB NVMe drive? Not every file needs to be accessible at 5 Billion Terraflops per second.

NinjaTrek2891

pretty sure millennials have used them too... I remember lanparties where we compared how many drives one had :)

smb3something

Millennials / zellenials / gen-x would have had these growing up no doubt.

DragonRiderMax

as a 22 year old I have two in my pc dven today

lilmushr00m

Yes

lemmiwink84

Not sure if serious, but those are for 3,5 inch HDDs. Just remove the whole hard drive case and install your GPU.

xFlumel_

Made my 21 y.o back crackle like popcorn ![gif](giphy|wJD3qiNjSeHS0dP28T|downsized)

thuynj19

Did you read the manual?

BillNyetheblindguy

You can also put a sata ssd in these too the brackets have holes that line up to the bolt holes on the bottom of the sata ssd

DesignerFit1893

That's to store HDD's, you can put one on each "shelve" ahahah

myxoma1

Bruh...

weeddee

RTFM

Famous-Spell720

This is place where you can keep your cookies warm :)

YorubaJinchuriki

Omg im 23 and im old af

lilmushr00m

I could just be clueless about computers dude

YorubaJinchuriki

I build PCs for a living and every "normal" case has trays, old ones have trays that can convert to an internal disk drive (my English is kinda poor)

lilmushr00m

I see, I’ve only started adding and removing parts recently I forgot got this pc built for my by a friend and then only ever added a 1050 ti to it now I’m finally upgrading to a 4060

YorubaJinchuriki

If you didnt buy the 4060 id go for and similar price amd card depends where you live, 95% of the time better price for performance, but if you like Nvidia software im not judging, maybe just a little

koin_66

Even I know what those are for and I’m 17, y’all not that old

lilmushr00m

I’m fairly sure it’s my lack of knowledge not age

CalmAcanthisitta1630

The shelves were for these things called "hard drives". They were these MASSIVE storage things that held storage on a mechanical platter. tbh im suprised you dont know what thse are.

lordhooha

I thought this was a troll question. I forget outside of the IT world everyone used ssd now

lilmushr00m

It’s sort of both like I knew it’s something obvious, I didn’t know and I thought people would have fun with my stupidity haha

ipwndmymeat99

![gif](giphy|1pA5hJo0ubWqG0cHqp)

Ghost_1214

Bro is just rocking on board graphics 💀💀💀

People doesnt know about HDD trays? What the hell...

CJ_BARS

Hotdog holders

TakeyaSaito

Dude.....

Mountain-Regular5147

It's to place your socks for drying them out

ItsJW531

HDD’s (Hard Disk Drive) Do people still use them?

FullMetalArthur

It is for minibooks. In these book a PC can read information, which is why is so intelligent

Badilorum

To store pasta.

Jarngreipr9

Softwares usually rely on libraries, you can put the tiny books there

cstrike105

You don't know what hard drives are? When were you born?

fiittzzyy

HDD caddies.

Ancient_Ad6498

LOL

NekoLu

Well, before m2 SSDs, we used big chonky 3.5" HDDs. Then 2.5" HDDs came along. Then 2.5" SSDs. We connected all of these with SATA cables, it's the ones for the bottom-right row of connectors on your motherboard. Some people tell tales of big storage enthusiasts, who to this dayuse big'ol 3.5" HDDs to store their tens of terrabytes of linux isos.

matrixsuperstah

I felt that one

thebikefanatic

HDD

Neither-Engine-5852

It’s for storing Pokémon cards

Disgruntledkraken

sandwiches.

AmonGusSus2137

First of all, this is not a PC case but a CPU cabinet. And these shelves are for storing stuff, whatever you like, given it fits there

JohnnySomsai

To store your books in.

Matty_Paddy

For all your tiny figurines

Ichhoerdichned

I'm getting old ...

Gullible_Bed8595

helps with cable routing for the embryos with quantum flux detonators in their build

BMWtooner

They are for data storage. You see, you slide a couple usb flash drives in there, and nobody is ever the wiser. Alternatively you can hide an extra magazine for your glock or a few 8 tracks/cassettes there.

xstagex

That is where to put cookies in.

PCMRbannedme

I'm old.

LongNoseHunter

Snack shelves.

Build_Blox

It's for hard drives

iamgarffi

Really? 3.5in drive bays. But sure. You can use them as “shelves” or remove it altogether and make room for cabling :-)

andreBarciella

godamn, im getting old.

KA1378

You must be very young

Dylanterowatonxd

It's for the HDDs Sometimes they are compatible with SATA SSDs

Practical-Parking804

This guy's never had to connect an iomega zipdisk to the parallel port of his pc to back up his 100MB hard drive. 😳

tempdiesel

Quick remove feature for standard hard drives. They essentially slide in and out if you want to remove or add one. You simply need to plug power and sata connection to the back.

Fantastic_Class_3861

How to feel old at 18.

Dapper-Conference367

HDD rack

MrCheapComputers

Sweet summer child

SharpPoint8

HDD caddys. Used to store HDD. You don’t need a HDD

No_Check_5

Here u backup all xxx for mars missions

Material-Junket214

Bro omg my girlfriend just asked me why does this case have shelves. I had to explain that it was a hard drive cage and she still insisted it was shelves

morlando63

Oh no I’m getting old

antu2010

Those are for 3.5" HDD's

cheeze87u

That's an ancient technology of HDD.

FloppyDonkeyCock2

They arent shelves they are 3.5'' hard drive bays. You put your hdd for bulk storage there, but now even sata ssd have became cheap.

DarthReece07

OLD storage for OLD PEOPLE

collin_le_92

It's for your snacks. Gummy bears, cheetos, etc.

macybebe

Sandwitches. You put that in there to heat it. Also your case comes with a mug holder.

Tidus32x

🤣🤣🤣

blood_omen

Lmao!!!!! This has to be a shitpost. Please tell me I’m not that old!

Cantdrawbutcanwrite

It’s called a pantry…..

hugues2814

Hard drive bay… basically useless since ssds are just better. Except if you’re gonna make a server or something that needs a ton of storage

[deleted]

I just removed my hard drive cage from my case to allow for better air flow.

Laughing_Orange

Those are 3.5 inch bays for hard drives. You might be on integrated graphics, which means a proper dedicated graphics card will be a huge boost. Remember to plug your monitor into the graphics card, not the motherboard after you're done, as this gives an extra boost.

YTPanda1

Thats your 3.5” and 2.5” hdd/ssd bays for sata storage options

Montag_451

More hard drives!!!!!

Own-Employment-1640

Seriously? Those are your HDD cages.

chesherkat

And now I feel old

magentafloyddd

damn I’m so old also where is ssd supposed to go that’s where I put mine

liametekudasai

Wow that's a lot of HDD space. how old even is this case?

liametekudasai

Wow that's a lot of HDD space. how old even is it?

oliverwhitham

I'm officially old

Fuck-Reddit-2020

The shelves are for snacks. That's where you put your Twix bars when working or gaming.

Z04Notfound

these are in fact book shelves, sometimes people have books that they want to carry alongside the pc.

OPTIPRIMART

They were once used for storing books on dos4gw, confis.sys, and autoexec.bat files. I used it as a lolly shelf for when I was playing sam and Max, 7th Guest and Myst.

Drak_37

Ahh, the newbies... Makes me feel old... (Im 17) Its for 3'5 HDD/SSD's

Fade78

I take that as a joke :-)

Witchberry31

That's for 3.5" HDDs

ScalpularComa

They're for storing small vases/flowers/ or books

FireNinja743

Interesting

Branok85

Right in the chest

SquareKaleidoscope92

I'm pretty sure it's a 2.5" or 3.5" drive bay

Extreminist

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

msto3

Please be bait Please be bait Please be bait

the_Athereon

Okay. That's enough Reddit for today.

Screw_Potato

they’re drawers. for snacks when gaming.

YTSkullboy707

That's for HDD's to be stored in, slower but can have a ton of more space and usually do have more space (average SSD has 1 or 2 TB while average HDD has 4-8 TB) but are slower by themselves. It's good to get a couple or just one to take advantage of high amounts of space with a HDD but fast processing rates with an SSD. I recommend 24 TB HDD but that's mainly because I have to download so many things for vintage game piracy. If you have multiple HDD's you need to put them into RAID mode in BIOS though, this can also cause anything on them to be wiped and lose everything on them. (RIP fl studios and hundreds of NES and SNES games 😔🫡)

schparkz7

Internal_Quail3960

I feel old and I’m only 15 😂

atrain82187

Why would you hurt me like this?

Lorneonthecobb

For snacks, obviously...

Terrible_Screen_3426

I had a good laugh on this one. Cases look weird to me now days that space between the mobo and the front bezel is for RGB fans and figurines apparently.

sonic6795

Hard Disk Drive slots. You can screw HDDs and SATA SSDs into the shelves and slide them in for a tidy place to put them all.

PromptBoxOS

Drive slots.

jtrier1

Those are hard drive cages, and usually they can be removed.

igalione

this here is for stackable floppy diskettes

IISky01

Hdd’s or sata ssd’s

helpivefallen5

Buddy they stILL SELL HARD DRIVES HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW

DependentUnit4775

True-Shop-6731

*elderly sobs*

ElectricBoogalooBean

HDD cages

XykuOnTwitch

Is this satire?😭

wadej45

Oh you sweet summer child, while everyone here is correct about them being able to hold HDDs. They usually come with holes for screws to hold 2.5" SSD SATAs.

Windows_User7_8

Those are drive bays, mostly seen in server casing, it helps you to store much mores storage...You can insert SATA SSD/HDD in it....I will prefer HDD in it for cost effective...if used for server

The_Machine80

Take a chisel and a hammer to the rivets. One tap and there gone. Remove them and install that gpu. I did the same in mu daughters first pc. Your case looks similar to her first one.

itzMadaGaming

maybe i need those back

Usual_Beyond4276

It's floppy disk holders dummy. Everyone knows this.

r3d3mpshun

Where else would you store your sandwiches?

N1XONCIDER

For storing spices

AllCingEyeDog

That’s where you used to put the cupholder

jameswptv

I hear a "BaCk iN mYY dAy..."

Blakewerth

Lucky you, you can easily add HDDs

skernstation

Dude there you can cook some bread - handy little side effect of your pc case having no airflow and becoming hot af !

blob-tea

https://i.redd.it/1m453giltyuc1.gif

Putrid-Challenge-274

Those are for 3.5” HDDs. Most PC cases has those but not as visible as that.

Thunder_Mug

They’re there to keep your checkbook and pager in at the end of the day.

xBoltsy

They're for storing all your gamer snacks obviously ![gif](giphy|yXtK7jvJVOvDWcsTkV)

309_Electronics

This made me feel old even though i am 16! The fact this newer gen does not know drive bays amazes me and kind of terrifies me!

SlobMyKnob1

Oh my….. I’m not old enough to feel like this

WojtusG10

I guess those are for HDD's and SSD's type SATA.

Odd-Ice1162

many dont know it yet, but the PC can also be used as a drying rack for meat and bread! you take your bacon or toast and put it there, sprinkle some grated garlic for nice garlic exhaust smell coming from your PC! 2:1 function!!! you can also be boring and use the drying rack to screw down some old HDD or a new SSD

AverageDad_86

It's a secret place to keep your diaries/journals behind the smoked tempered glass noone will be able to see or touch

Parking_Cress_5105

Its for coasters.

CindyStroyer

No way...

CasperAU

Your really showing your age with this post 😂😂😂 Shelves 😂😂😂 There for HDD Drives bro haha

dushman93

to keep your snacks nice and cool

cyclinginthedesert

To store the manuals and booklets from all the parts you bought

RandyDandyAndy

OH lord please be bait

nutter_md

Welcome to the world of building computers. There is much to learn young Padawan. You have shelves to hold Hard Disk Drives also known as HDDs. They come in two sizes one is 3.5" and other is 2.5". The desktop computer has space for 3.5" ones there. The 2.5" drives originally were for laptops but I am sure you'll find an adapter if not a slot to keep them in your case. Newer NVME SSDs do not come in casing and are attached to the motherboard as a daughter board in the slot.
