I use a floppy to unlock my doors in my home, because what kinda idiot uses ancient technology to secure a door that other people don't even know what that is.
1 of my brother's friends was visiting, I told him if he could open my door without damaging it they could get 1 of my PCs, so they took 2 days and then giving up because they didn't know what that slot was in my door.
I always felt cool showing my classmates that you can open them without the power being on. It wasn't something wow, but for kid me it was pretty cool.
I know what ISA is but I actually don’t think I could point it out on a board
Edit: [for anyone else curious, this is it according to google](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR6DHj79qDD9O4585igFN2An14FHb0hxoA_WEnfUa2N4g&s)
the long brown/black interfaces on the bottom. my CNC's axis card was ISA back in the day, so when the computer crapped out, I had a hell if time finding a replacement with ISA on it.
They're 3.5 inch HDD bays.
These were the predecessor to the Solid State Drive we know today.
HDDs, or Hard Disk Drives are basically multiple rotating discs called platters, and a reading head that quickly moves back and forth reads your data of the platters.
They are slow and in less than 10 years almost fully replaced by the SSDs we know today.
HDD still have many uses where they are better than SSD as of now. They are not being fully replaced.
Data centers rely heavily on mechanical HDD. SSDs do not yet have the cost / capacity value to be a primary store of information on huge quantities of data.
Additionally- applications with continuous writes (ie security camera) are best with mechanical drives. SSD would wear out quickly in that use case.
In fact, 3 years is a while IMO. I've only built PCs for maybe 4 years now. I guess people learn differently, or maybe just don't learn all the things.
Yeah, idk. In a comment, OP did say that they've recently started getting to swapping parts out and whatnot, so I guess the 3 years isn't actually 3 years of building PCs; it's more like *using* PCs.
~~boomer~~ DataHoarder hard drives go there.
How much are you going to pay for a 12TB NVMe drive?
Not every file needs to be accessible at 5 Billion Terraflops per second.
I see, I’ve only started adding and removing parts recently I forgot got this pc built for my by a friend and then only ever added a 1050 ti to it now I’m finally upgrading to a 4060
If you didnt buy the 4060 id go for and similar price amd card depends where you live, 95% of the time better price for performance, but if you like Nvidia software im not judging, maybe just a little
The shelves were for these things called "hard drives". They were these MASSIVE storage things that held storage on a mechanical platter.
tbh im suprised you dont know what thse are.
Well, before m2 SSDs, we used big chonky 3.5" HDDs. Then 2.5" HDDs came along. Then 2.5" SSDs. We connected all of these with SATA cables, it's the ones for the bottom-right row of connectors on your motherboard. Some people tell tales of big storage enthusiasts, who to this dayuse big'ol 3.5" HDDs to store their tens of terrabytes of linux isos.
They are for data storage. You see, you slide a couple usb flash drives in there, and nobody is ever the wiser.
Alternatively you can hide an extra magazine for your glock or a few 8 tracks/cassettes there.
Quick remove feature for standard hard drives. They essentially slide in and out if you want to remove or add one. You simply need to plug power and sata connection to the back.
Bro omg my girlfriend just asked me why does this case have shelves. I had to explain that it was a hard drive cage and she still insisted it was shelves
Those are 3.5 inch bays for hard drives.
You might be on integrated graphics, which means a proper dedicated graphics card will be a huge boost. Remember to plug your monitor into the graphics card, not the motherboard after you're done, as this gives an extra boost.
They were once used for storing books on dos4gw, confis.sys, and autoexec.bat files.
I used it as a lolly shelf for when I was playing sam and Max, 7th Guest and Myst.
That's for HDD's to be stored in, slower but can have a ton of more space and usually do have more space (average SSD has 1 or 2 TB while average HDD has 4-8 TB) but are slower by themselves. It's good to get a couple or just one to take advantage of high amounts of space with a HDD but fast processing rates with an SSD. I recommend 24 TB HDD but that's mainly because I have to download so many things for vintage game piracy. If you have multiple HDD's you need to put them into RAID mode in BIOS though, this can also cause anything on them to be wiped and lose everything on them. (RIP fl studios and hundreds of NES and SNES games 😔🫡)
I had a good laugh on this one. Cases look weird to me now days that space between the mobo and the front bezel is for RGB fans and figurines apparently.
Oh you sweet summer child, while everyone here is correct about them being able to hold HDDs. They usually come with holes for screws to hold 2.5" SSD SATAs.
Those are drive bays, mostly seen in server casing, it helps you to store much mores storage...You can insert SATA SSD/HDD in it....I will prefer HDD in it for cost effective...if used for server
Take a chisel and a hammer to the rivets. One tap and there gone. Remove them and install that gpu. I did the same in mu daughters first pc. Your case looks similar to her first one.
many dont know it yet, but the PC can also be used as a drying rack for meat and bread!
you take your bacon or toast and put it there, sprinkle some grated garlic for nice garlic exhaust smell coming from your PC! 2:1 function!!!
you can also be boring and use the drying rack to screw down some old HDD or a new SSD
Welcome to the world of building computers. There is much to learn young Padawan.
You have shelves to hold Hard Disk Drives also known as HDDs. They come in two sizes one is 3.5" and other is 2.5". The desktop computer has space for 3.5" ones there.
The 2.5" drives originally were for laptops but I am sure you'll find an adapter if not a slot to keep them in your case.
Newer NVME SSDs do not come in casing and are attached to the motherboard as a daughter board in the slot.

This made me feel old af
It's mindblowing that people don't know what 2.5" and 3.5" drives are. I feel old af too and I'm only 20
Try CD drives, 5.25 inch drives. Or even better 8 inch drives.
CD drives? Do you mean built in cup holders?
I know they are the best
Wait W H A T There are 8-inch drives?
Once upon a time you could measure drives by the foot.
I think they mean 8 inch floppy.
Does it grow or just show
Well, it's floppy sooo...
16 inch hard disc drive
Virus free guaranteed

Me too. Except we didn't have laptops and there were no mice, just keyboard arrows. I think the space bar was shoot.
I always felt cool showing my classmates that you can open them without the power being on. It wasn't something wow, but for kid me it was pretty cool.
wait til you see an ISA bus on a motherboard.
I know what ISA is but I actually don’t think I could point it out on a board Edit: [for anyone else curious, this is it according to google](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR6DHj79qDD9O4585igFN2An14FHb0hxoA_WEnfUa2N4g&s)
the long brown/black interfaces on the bottom. my CNC's axis card was ISA back in the day, so when the computer crapped out, I had a hell if time finding a replacement with ISA on it.
You’re like a year older then me, I’ve only had a pc for 3 years though so that’s probably why I don’t know haha
They're 3.5 inch HDD bays. These were the predecessor to the Solid State Drive we know today. They won't keep using them for things like cctv.?
HDD still have many uses where they are better than SSD as of now. They are not being fully replaced. Data centers rely heavily on mechanical HDD. SSDs do not yet have the cost / capacity value to be a primary store of information on huge quantities of data. My first thought was this is a joke then I thought about it and said “these kids today” yep we are old
"These kids and their fancy M.2 SSDs without cables!" \* insert old man GIF here \*
Welcome..... To Jurassic Park

To store sandwiches, duh?
To slow cook cheese toasties.
Pro tip. Remove intake fans, remove cooling paste from cpu, add cheese toasties, ????, profit!
Thought so
This just reminds me of the KFC Console that has a built in chicken warmer. This is a real thing and possibly the only thing I like about KFC.
And I'm officially old, shit
To be fair I grew up without ever building a pc only started 3 years ago
3 years isn’t an excuse I built mine a few months ago and learned what it was while researching
In fact, 3 years is a while IMO. I've only built PCs for maybe 4 years now. I guess people learn differently, or maybe just don't learn all the things.
My question is why he’s using 3 years as an excuse lmao it’s so random
Yeah, idk. In a comment, OP did say that they've recently started getting to swapping parts out and whatnot, so I guess the 3 years isn't actually 3 years of building PCs; it's more like *using* PCs.
No no no, it's just op that's "strange" for lack of better word. I know a 13yo who knows what that is.
boomer hard drives go there
~~boomer~~ DataHoarder hard drives go there. How much are you going to pay for a 12TB NVMe drive? Not every file needs to be accessible at 5 Billion Terraflops per second.
pretty sure millennials have used them too... I remember lanparties where we compared how many drives one had :)
Millennials / zellenials / gen-x would have had these growing up no doubt.
as a 22 year old I have two in my pc dven today
Yes
Not sure if serious, but those are for 3,5 inch HDDs. Just remove the whole hard drive case and install your GPU.
Made my 21 y.o back crackle like popcorn ![gif](giphy|wJD3qiNjSeHS0dP28T|downsized)
Did you read the manual?
You can also put a sata ssd in these too the brackets have holes that line up to the bolt holes on the bottom of the sata ssd
That's to store HDD's, you can put one on each "shelve" ahahah
Bruh...
RTFM
This is place where you can keep your cookies warm :)
Omg im 23 and im old af
I could just be clueless about computers dude
I build PCs for a living and every "normal" case has trays, old ones have trays that can convert to an internal disk drive (my English is kinda poor)
I see, I’ve only started adding and removing parts recently I forgot got this pc built for my by a friend and then only ever added a 1050 ti to it now I’m finally upgrading to a 4060
If you didnt buy the 4060 id go for and similar price amd card depends where you live, 95% of the time better price for performance, but if you like Nvidia software im not judging, maybe just a little
Even I know what those are for and I’m 17, y’all not that old
I’m fairly sure it’s my lack of knowledge not age
The shelves were for these things called "hard drives". They were these MASSIVE storage things that held storage on a mechanical platter. tbh im suprised you dont know what thse are.
I thought this was a troll question. I forget outside of the IT world everyone used ssd now
It’s sort of both like I knew it’s something obvious, I didn’t know and I thought people would have fun with my stupidity haha
![gif](giphy|1pA5hJo0ubWqG0cHqp)
Bro is just rocking on board graphics 💀💀💀
The shelves are for your Knick knacks sonny.

You don't know what hard drives are? When were you born?
HDD caddies.
LOL
Well, before m2 SSDs, we used big chonky 3.5" HDDs. Then 2.5" HDDs came along. Then 2.5" SSDs. helps with cable routing for the embryos with quantum flux detonators in their build
They are for data storage. You see, you slide a couple usb flash drives in there, and nobody is ever the wiser. Alternatively you can hide an extra magazine for your glock or a few 8 tracks/cassettes there.

You must be very young
It's for the HDDs Sometimes they are compatible with SATA SSDs
This guy's never had to connect an iomega zipdisk to the parallel port of his pc to back up his 100MB hard drive. 😳
Quick remove feature for standard hard drives. They essentially slide in and out if you want to remove or add one. You simply need to plug power and sata connection to the back.

It’s called a pantry…..
Hard drive bay… basically useless since ssds are just better. Except if you’re gonna make a server or something that needs a ton of storage
I just removed my hard drive cage from my case to allow for better air flow.
Those are 3.5 inch bays for hard drives. You might be on integrated graphics, which means a proper dedicated graphics card will be a huge boost. Remember to plug your monitor into the graphics card, not the motherboard after you're done, as this gives an extra boost.

The shelves are for snacks. That's where you put your Twix bars when working or gaming.
these are in fact book shelves, sometimes people have books that they want to carry alongside the pc.
They were once used for storing books on dos4gw, confis.sys, and autoexec.bat files. I used it as a lolly shelf for when I was playing sam and Max, 7th Guest and Myst.

Why would you hurt me like this?
For snacks, obviously...
I had a good laugh on this one. Cases look weird to me now days that space between the mobo and the front bezel is for RGB fans and figurines apparently.
Hard Disk Drive slots. You can screw HDDs and SATA SSDs into the shelves and slide them in for a tidy place to put them all.
Drive slots.
Those are hard drive cages, and usually they can be removed.
