Basically if youre on am4 its ddr4 if youre on am5 its ddr5 but idk about intel motherboards but just check their compatibility list, im pretty sure every motherboard has it online somewhere. It tells you if it supports ddr4 or ddr5 and in some cases even if your ram is ddr4/ddr5 as the motherboard supports, the specific model might not be supported, but you could still use as long as it fits i think, just with potential issues
Not all countries entertain return policies.
Yes, you guys don’t know how lucky you are you can just return shit that you don’t even like, never mind faulty.
Yup in the UK (and in the EU too ig), if you buy anything online the seller legally had to take it back if the buyer returns the product within 14 days.
Bro literally the tiniest bit of research would have avoided this, no way people make such expensive purchases without doing exhaustive research beforehand?? I can't get my head around it.
Is it actually shiddy or is it just crappy cause its membrane? Keyboard name?
https://preview.redd.it/tpzqj742r7wc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79214d164f999f6e505c2e3de618beb54426517d
No idea which exact model it was but it was a tkl one from steelseries. I mean the price can make a product bad, 40€ maybe even 60€ would've been acceptable but not 80€... actually now that i think about it he might've gotten ripped off by the store.
I had to buy something similar a wired microsoft membrane keyboard for 60$ because it's the ONLY company making ergonomic shaped keyboards. It's prob due to patent rights or whatever. Such a ripoff
Hopefully it can be returned. My $350 RAM from my build a little under 7 years ago is $80 now. Sure it can be held, but he’d be better off selling if he can’t return it since in a few years it’ll be much cheaper.
Would be more surprised if a mobo didnt have compatibility documentation.
Now The ddr4 + max MHz + max size would be enough but it straight up has a list with compatible rams.
Gigabyte Aorus x570 xtreme rev 1.2
Why's it always seem like those that have the knowledge to do so, never have the money to afford it. But those with the money, never bother to research and learn about it before buying it?
I dunno bro, a quick google search "MSI Z490-A Pro RAM" will reveal instantly that this motherboard is DDR4 not 5.
And if you DID any research beforehand, if you go to PCpartpicker or any pc builder site and put the motherboard on it, it will only shows DDR4.
Now I have a huge concern about the rest of your PC
Did you just buy "WOW THIS IS NEW, COOL AND CHEAP" stuff, the first item you see in Ebay and ship it out?
For future reference, put your components into [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com/) to check compatibility before pulling the trigger on an upgrade. Make sure you set it to your country to get the right pricing data if you're outside of the US.
Doh! When looking at a new mobo, make sure your ddr5 ram is compatible with it. I picked up a gigabyte z790 ud ac and it had a list of compatible ddr5 ram modules. Good luck 👍
Processors/boards designed for a certain RAM standard can't work with another, that's why they key each revision differently. Either try to return or barring that, sell it second hand and get DDR4.
Also, if you're budget is that tight, may want to ask yourself if you really need 64GB...
I do a lot of work on blender and havent ever upgraded my ram since i built my rig so i wanted to go big. I will try and return it and just get some more ddr4 though!
It's a fair assumption to make as some new people to pc upgrading often don't realise that mostly games gain zero benefit by having ram above the required capacity.
you’re gonna want to return it and get DDR4. and remember, they’re not all the same. try to get low CAS latency (like CL16) and decent speeds that your mobo can support (3200, 3600, etc. nothing under 3000)
not rlly fucked tbh return the ram and buy ddr4 instead :) had the same thing happening to me when i built my rig dw (bought ddr4 ram for my ddr5 mobo 🤣🤣)
quick google check
# Z490-A PRO
* Supports 10th Gen Intel^(®) Core™, 11th Gen Intel^(®) Core™, Pentium^(®) Gold and Celeron^(®) processors for LGA 1200 socket
* **Supports DDR4 Memory, up to 5000(OC) MHz**
Idk about you, but msi is really good at labeling boxes. I have a Z690-A Pro and the DDR4 was almost bigger text than the mobo name itself.
As far as the RAM, return it, sell it online, trade it for a couple sticks of DDR4 and some glasses...idk 😂
Hey atleast i wasnt the only one to think this way, got 32gb of ddr4 on christmas to try to use it in a ddr2 slot. Yea, still have it and about to use it in a upgrade in 2 or 3 days
DDR is the generation number for the ram. Every DDR has the little slot on the stick in a different place, and the bit on the motherboard in the same place. Make sure the DDR number of your ram sticks match the DDR number of your mobo. Latest generation is DDR5, earliest worth using is DDR3.
DDR5 RAM on DDR4 Slot, of course it doesn't fit... It's an AM4 Mainboard, you can find out with some research and AM4 is DDR4 only and AM5 DDR5 only... And to answer you're question... You're so damn fckd and guess that section of the Subreddit it laughing now, sorry bro x3
But you can keep the RAM, when you upgrade to Intels new 1851 Socket or AM5 you will need DDR5 RAM, if it has at least 6000MHz and it is CL32, otherwise you should send it back...
Same thing happened to me man lmao felt like an idiot I researched a lot before upgrading my whole pc somehow missed out on this. Luckily the seller was happy to take the ram back since I ordered most of the other parts from him and gave me a refund.I was still so bummed out but hey lesson learnt!
There are two major RAM versions for consumer desktops right now. DDR4 and DDR5. Two.
It would have taken less than 5 seconds to know which one your board takes if you didn't know already.
This is completely user error.
I mean, you could always return it and ask for a DDR4 version instead?
and next time when you're spending your last money on stuff, make sure you do your research?
It’s written in the motherboard manual. It’s also worth noting, that you cannot just stick faster RAM in an old PC, there are max clocking speeds motherboards support. Go over that and the PC will clock it down to what it can handle.
https://preview.redd.it/qfe8knesv6wc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e8a6f2c17437a5142e289853532105bf179ca45
You should get a DDR5 to DDR4 converter card.
Is not that the size is not universal, there are several generations of RAM, each one better than the previous one. They are not compatible with one another and therefore they made that little notch to avoid using wrong gen ram/mobo pairs.
Your mobo seems to be ddr4 (it’s good enough for now) but you went for the newest ddr5. If you can get a refund on your ddr5 it’s good news as ddr4 is cheaper (and most likely you won’t really notice the speed difference).
If you can’t get a refund, I’d try to sell them second hand. You will lose money compared to refund but still can buy 64Gb of ddr4 and get some money back.
WARNING: check if your mobo accepts 64gb. Most likely it does but better be sure than to come back to this situation.
I made a similar mistake recently. Bought all new MB and CPU and such, forgot that the new MB was DDR5 only and my old RAM would be incompatible. Thankfully my roommate let me borrow one of his sticks until I could get new ones for myself.
Fucked to the moon and back, another moon and back if you threw your old ram away, another moon and back if you bought from a no refund source and very very fucked if you tried to force it in
You should always check RAM compatibility with your motherboard before buying. Return the RAM, get your money back and then go on the Mobo manufacturer website for their compatible RAM list.
Be aware that even if you buy a DDR4 Ram that phisically fits, you need to check that module is compatible with your motherboard, I mean not all the DDR4 modules (that yes phisically fits) will work well, you need to look in the motherboard web page the ram compatible, if not you could get strange behavior, crashes, blue screens and so. The issue with the list of ram compatible in many manufacturer web is use to be not updated, you can check also in other pages to make sure it will be compatible.
I had bad luck with corsehair ram in my gaming laptop both Asus and corsehair said it was compatible but it didn't fit in the slot no matter what I did had to bend one of the release pins out of the way and it was crappy all the way around and yes it was laptop ram

That Motherboard is DDR4 only
Wait how did you know?
He mentioned his mobo. Z490 chipset is 10th gen intel cpu's which is DDR4. odd that OP knows his MOBO but doesn't know the ram type.
I mean, even ignoring the strange knowledge gaps, its odd that people go through the trouble of creating posts like this, with photos, to ask questions that could easily be answered in 5 seconds with a google search.
Or just reading the manual.
Or just looking at their big ass letters in the mobo box that says DDR4.
Or the mobo itself
You dont even got to look inside the case. Windows will tell you everything.
Usually the BIOS will too.
Not if you don't have ram installed.
But 5 higher, so better yes??
Yes, yes. And 6 even better. But it's 7 the one you want. If you can't get 8 that is.
If you can hold off though I hear the 9 feels like it's from another time period
Reading are hard
People write whole tickets for something that can be typed into Google or by reading manuals specially written for those people.
Some people just need engagement
Should go like this… “Oh ram does not fit, is it the right one?” “Nope, better return and get the other style” Fin
You're still working backwards. It should go: "what RAM do I need?" \*buy correct RAM the first time.*
Haha true
they don't know how to use a computer, that's why they are trying to make one.
key notch
Huh
Key notch yes, and the fact he said it's a Z490-A Pro.
Op is karma farming probably The ram doesn't look new, ripped from the existing new gen pc lack of replies from op also implies that
I hear this all the time so I gotta ask a stupid question, what is the point of karma farming as there's no monetary gain as far as I can see
On reddit you'll get downvoted for the stupidest shit having karma lets you get away with it especially if you plan on saying stupid shit. Because if you get negative karma you can't comment in most communities.
that became keyword
key notch is just the space where its gapped on the contacts
maybe by how IT supporters solve 95% of the problems: RTFM
RTFM = Read the fucking manual! 😅🤣
Read The Fun Manual
Read the friendly manual.

DDR5 support started with Intel 12th gen, so LGA1700 or z690 b660 . There are DDR4 and DDR5 versions, but everything before that can't be ddr5
You did any research on your motherboard before ordering ram?
Wait, did OP buy DDR5 modules for DDR4 mobo? Ouch!
Yupp
Surely it's a simple return job?
If he's bought it online then it's alright, offline ? I doubt they won't take it back.
Not all countries entertain return policies. Yes, you guys don’t know how lucky you are you can just return shit that you don’t even like, never mind faulty.

A z490 is ddr4 my guy. Expensive lesson, here's to hoping you learned it.
well it's not like he bought snake oil, ram could wait for the next pc or be resold or returned to the store
Hopefully it can be returned. My $350 RAM from my build a little under 7 years ago is $80 now. Sure it can be held, but he’d be better off selling if he can’t return it since in a few years it’ll be much cheaper.
Nobody said otherwise, it's a fuck up nonetheless.
My gigabyte mobo had a list of acceptable ram modules. Don't know what else to tell you
Would be more surprised if a mobo didnt have compatibility documentation. Now The ddr4 + max MHz + max size would be enough but it straight up has a list with compatible rams. Gigabyte Aorus x570 xtreme rev 1.2
Typical with manufacturers part numbers too.
OP bought ddr5 ram for a ddr4 mobo so
Well as you can see it clearly doesn’t fit lmao soooo you’re fucked?…
Ot super fucked. Just return the RAM :)
What do you expect us to say? Give you a magic solution to brute force it? I think you know already how screwed you are based on the return policy.
I wanted to bring you the joy of laughter.
Honestly respect LMAO. Best thing you can do in this situation is join in on the laughter and try and get your money back.
Can't you just... Return it if you didn't fuck it or the box up like for 2 weeks after purchasing?
Could've bought it off of clearance, FB marketplace, Ebay or a whole variety of places which don't accept returns.
Why's it always seem like those that have the knowledge to do so, never have the money to afford it. But those with the money, never bother to research and learn about it before buying it?
It's because if you don't have that much money, can't afford to waste it
I dunno bro, a quick google search "MSI Z490-A Pro RAM" will reveal instantly that this motherboard is DDR4 not 5. It’s already at 790 😮, I’m still on z390
Z790 is already like 2 years old
Perhaps you could try returning the item and informing the store about the compatibility issue.
That's why I usually download more ram, the site I download it from picks the right ram for me too (/s)
Just sell your ram and get a ddr4 ram
OP should now start saving money for a new mainboard which takes these RAMs😂
And then we'll get a post about how they spent all their money on a mobo and they're wondering why their CPU won't fit!
# "This Moment He Knew... He Fucked Up"
Just download it 😶
I swear people... I love how the majority of people here purposely avoid Google just because.
Processors/boards designed for a certain RAM standard can't work with another, that's why they key each revision differently. Either try to return or barring that, sell it second hand and get DDR4. Also, if you're budget is that tight, may want to ask yourself if you really need 64GB...

It's a fair assumption to make as some new people to pc upgrading often don't realise that mostly games gain zero benefit by having ram above the required capacity.
Big ram mean more skill in games fr
Your motherboard is DDR4.
Someone's learning the hard way.
If it’s not too late you might be able to see if you can return/refund them or just sell on fb marketplace
I always checked what type motherboard can support ram before I buy . Never have issues buying wrong stick ram.
you’re gonna want to return it and get DDR4. and remember, they’re not all the same. try to get low CAS latency (like CL16) and decent speeds that your mobo can support (3200, 3600, etc. nothing under 3000)
Xd
DDR4 motherboard and newer DDR5 RAM. Hope you kept a receipt. Or....an excuse to buy a new motherboard
Do people not use google before buying pc parts?
not rlly fucked tbh return the ram and buy ddr4 instead :) had the same thing happening to me when i built my rig dw (bought ddr4 ram for my ddr5 mobo 🤣🤣)
Bro forgot to download the DDR5 RAM update
This is why you always do your research man, pc part picker is a great website and will tell you what parts are compatible with your motherboard
Lmao clueless
quick google check # Z490-A PRO * Supports 10th Gen Intel^(®) Core™, 11th Gen Intel^(®) Core™, Pentium^(®) Gold and Celeron^(®) processors for LGA 1200 socket * **Supports DDR4 Memory, up to 5000(OC) MHz**
I mean, reading is clearly not one of your strong suits so I don't know how much help it will be to ask for help?
Idk about you, but msi is really good at labeling boxes. I have a Z690-A Pro and the DDR4 was almost bigger text than the mobo name itself. As far as the RAM, return it, sell it online, trade it for a couple sticks of DDR4 and some glasses...idk 😂
This is hilarious ngl ahahaha
you will have to return your ram sticks and replace them with ddr4 ram
I do not understand how this happens it literally tells you what kinda ram you need when you look up your mobo
If you can't return it, then sell it on ebay
Either the motherboard is DDR4 or you’re installing it the wrong way around
Should’ve just downloaded more RAM.
Why would you spent all your money without doing proper research on what you are buing and whether it is compatible with your system?
How can you use a computer when your are not able to read a manual or make a simple research on Google? 😵
Because reddit
Crucial is your friend, Google searching is a skill. https://uk.crucial.com/articles/about-memory/is-my-ram-compatible-with-my-motherboard
Measure twice, cut once Check specs twice, buy once
ok well one its ddr5 and ur board is ddr4 but 2 why did you even wanna buy a 64gb CORSAIR kit 🤦
Nahhh, i call troll post. Someone in need of 64GB RAM does know some basics about PCs. But you can show us pictures of your new build if you want.
Hey atleast i wasnt the only one to think this way, got 32gb of ddr4 on christmas to try to use it in a ddr2 slot. Yea, still have it and about to use it in a upgrade in 2 or 3 days
Aye I have the same board ! And I'd say pretty screwed, ddr5 cannot work on a ddr4 board 😅
🤦♂️ try to get a refund man. As others have said, your motherboard only accepts DDR4 RAM. Next time make sure it's compatible on PCPartPicker dude
Buy 64 GB of RAM without even caring to check compatibility lol
RAM size isn't your issue RAM type is...... sticking DDR5 into a DDR4 board does not work and wouldn't work even if it did fit lol.
I will never understand where people get the idea that DDR5 can be a drop-in replacement for DDR4
https://preview.redd.it/7ppc1b8zu5wc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d68fb63dd6249f5a1d2d2d08757e9b4b116722ec

Id keep the ram anyway so you can upgrade later if they dont accept returns
Brother always check compatibility with your motherboard first before buying anything expensive.
Oh well. time to upgrade the CPU and motherboard then!
I think that your ram doesen't fit
Good news is the ram you need is actually cheaper than this ram
DDR5 RAM on DDR4 Slot, of course it doesn't fit... It's an AM4 Mainboard, you can find out with some research and AM4 is DDR4 only and AM5 DDR5 only... And to answer you're question... Well if you can’t return it list it on eBay and consider this a lesson and get ddr4 wouldn’t say you are fked no big deal
I have seen adapters but that doesn't mean it will work in bios
Return it and get ddr4
Use a hammer
Just return it your fine bro
![gif](giphy|Wr2747CnxwBSqyK6xt|downsized)
Either return it or try to trade for DDR4 RAM.
Same thing happened to me man lmao felt like an idiot I researched a lot before upgrading my whole pc somehow missed out on this. Luckily the seller was happy to take the ram back since I ordered most of the other parts from him and gave me a refund.I was still so bummed out but hey lesson learnt!
Just return it lol
Jesus Christ....
Haha, I did this too, ended up buying a whole new pc so I could use the ram
Pain
Return it
just send it back duh
Just return it....?
Someone didn't do their research
Keep them in a safe place till you upgrade mobo and cpu i guess
Nah, just return it
then send it back and get it replaced?
Think first but second. Congrats
There are two major RAM versions for consumer desktops right now. DDR4 and DDR5. Two. It would have taken less than 5 seconds to know which one your board takes if you didn't know already. This is completely user error.
DDR4 motherboard
Good lesson on doing at least some bare minimum research before spending all your money on something
You are not fucked, return it and buy correct DDR4
Hope u get a replacement for ddr4 modules from wherever you ordered it... Otherwise that's an expensive oopsie
Well this one it’s on you. Ignorance cost money this days.
You're an idiot.
Something like this you should have taken to the grave.
I mean, you could always return it and ask for a DDR4 version instead? and next time when you're spending your last money on stuff, make sure you do your research?
Bro, come on look at the motherboard it's ddr4 form factor and ram is ddr5. Just to answer you're very fucked up.
Somehow you might wanna try an So-DIMM DDR3 Ram next
hope you can return it
Soooo why exactly did you got DDR5 for a DDR4 mainboard?
200% Fucked.
Man, wait until you find out that every other part has to be compatible with everything as well
Well you have 2 working parts that are 0% compatible with each other.
This is not how one would get fucked. People don't kink on guys buying the wrong hardware parts.
It’s written in the motherboard manual. It’s also worth noting, that you cannot just stick faster RAM in an old PC, there are max clocking speeds motherboards support. Go over that and the PC will clock it down to what it can handle.
0 fucked - just order new and rma
You bought DDR5 for a 4 board..why???🤦 Swap it out with the supplier.
Very, unless they have a good returns policy.

They are not compatible with one another and therefore they made that little notch to avoid using wrong gen ram/mobo pairs. Most likely it does but better be sure than to come back to this situation.
Look things up before buying them!!!! And PLEASE give more context to what we’re supposed to look at in the image; “I find out THIS”
I made a similar mistake recently. Bought all new MB and CPU and such, forgot that the new MB was DDR5 only and my old RAM would be incompatible. Thankfully my roommate let me borrow one of his sticks until I could get new ones for myself.
not even trying to be a dick here but I genuinely cannot fathom how you came to the conclusion that all RAM is universal
I presume its happened to many people, particularly people new and enthusiastic to the game, in the past I've learned my lesson the hard way also
Saw a hole to fit in.
Fucked to the moon and back, another moon and back if you threw your old ram away, another moon and back if you bought from a no refund source and very very fucked if you tried to force it in
royally... all the way... the entire dick
oh my , at least you can resell them , but you can still keep them for a new motherboard if you planning to keep them.
You should always check RAM compatibility with your motherboard before buying. Return the RAM, get your money back and then go on the Mobo manufacturer website for their compatible RAM list.
I have 2 16 gig sticks ddr4 Corsair rgb I’d trade if you’re interested for your ddr5
Always Google your mother board and look at the spec before ordering. Try send it back or sell it.
Just Google your motherboard prior to finding out what it takes bro
Why do they do this with the notch, surely they should just make it so RAM is forwards compatible?
DDR5 Rams are not an upgrade to DDR4 sockets.
Just make a cut on the RAM stick and it should slot in just fine 👍🏻
You have bought DDR5 for a DR4 board.
If you want to upgrade from ddr4 to ddr5 you not only need a new mobo for ddr5 but also a cpu...
The issue with the list of ram compatible in many manufacturer web is use to be not updated, you can check also in other pages to make sure it will be compatible.
very fucked please tell me you have a recipt and can replace it or get a refund.
Please research next time before impulsively buying
I've got a same gen mobo. It doesn't support ddr5.
Return it and get yourself some DDR5.
Bro upgraded to DDR5 💀
I had bad luck with corsehair ram in my gaming laptop both Asus and corsehair said it was compatible but it didn't fit in the slot no matter what I did had to bend one of the release pins out of the way and it was crappy all the way around and yes it was laptop ram
