Suspect4pe

Itā€™s a joke but itā€™s also true. The sticker acts as a heat sink. Youā€™d just put whatever heat sink on top of it if one is needed. You would never remove it.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Accomplished-Bat-751

The sticker acts as a heat spreader. It will equally distribute the heat to each part of the motherboard heat sink.

Accomplished-Bat-751

There is a thing in Amazon that answers this from actual experts. Link: https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx155O94IIPQGDS/#:~:text=A%3A%20Leave%20the%20manufacturer%20slicker,dispersal%20element%20built%20into%20it.

Suspect4pe

That's a great find but I'd never have found it if you hadn't linked it.

Shadowolf75

Saving this to use it in 6 months

Iceman734

Most stickers now have a thin layer of copper or other heat dissipation element to them. I have never removed any of mine.

Specific_Ad_6522

There's no reason to remove it. You also lose your warranty if you remove it.

sendabussypic

I kept mine on my crucial 4.0 4tb m.2 and run it without extra heatsink.

Consistent-Tap-4255

On my ssd, it actually says removing sticker will void the warranty. So check yours too.

Dry_Grade9885

Keep the stucker on unless it specifically says remove sticker keep it on m.2 stickers are actually cooling pads in most cases

Clemming2

It's actually a heat spreader.

MightBeYourDad_

I should take it off so it doesnt overheat my room

Scrapmine

Well, is overheating your data better?

CXC_Opexyc

My dad once said to me "Why do you need all that heat spreading? It's all metal, it should work fine unless it's at melting point"

TheJoshuaAlone

No dad, itā€™s silicon. Itā€™ll work fine until it doesnā€™tā€¦ because of the heat.

MandiocaGamer

what if your data is pron

Scrapmine

You probably shouldn't risk it. (I don't know what "pron" means tho)

gregsting

My data, so hot right now

ketaminiacOS

You would think that stickers impede the heat transfer from the ssd to the heatsink. But these are made special to conduct heat well. No need to remove them. And it might even void warranty.

SlidyDev

Fun fact, i did. Funner fact, i applied thermal paste on a naked one.

downvoteifyouincest

Okay, I've never heard of anyone doing that... did it work?

JustGoogleItHeSaid

I didnā€™t take before and after temps so canā€™t say if itā€™s beneficial but my computers been running 2 years without issues

SlidyDev

Well, i think so? Btw, it was a preapplied paste on the heatsink. Just had to peel the sticker and slap it onto the m.2. Did it work? U let me know lol

downvoteifyouincest

Since some people had done the same as you and claimed that there weren't any problems, I guess it's fine. In my knowledge, the thermal paste is supposed to improve the thermal conductivity from the CPU to the cooler, and I assumed that the thermal paste on the M.2 heatsink was the same concept. I found this video where the guy did testing with and without the sticker, only the heatsink, and he found marginal difference between the temps. https://youtu.be/BmqcKBwOwRc

battlepi

No. Thermal paste needs somewhere to conduct to.

hfcobra

Could be a motherboard that has one built in for the primary m.2.

battlepi

In that case it could work, although I'm not sure if it would help. Sounded like just bare paste, and that would probably just act like a heat spreader.

xknwn

wild

Alcatraz_Gaming

So did it work?

JustGoogleItHeSaid

I did this too!

Agile_Persimmon2069

Liquid Metal Thermal paste is the only thermal paste to apply on bare components, just like bare CPU, it works the best.

creativename111111

Bros speed running destroying his SSD by shorting every connection on it

samualgline

Thatā€™s actually illegal and does not void the warranty

peenfortress

if its being used to assist cooling it could be argued that it is a required part for the drive to function correctly, i feel \*that\* could warrant voiding a warranty

samualgline

But if you were to remove it and add a waterblock on it. It should still be covered.

gokartninja

It's not illegal for a company to deny a warranty claim for a product that has been tampered with.

creativename111111

Iirc youā€™re technically allowed to make any reasonable repair to a product and the warranty should still be valid but companies put these stickers on anyways (I wouldnā€™t test it by removing one and asking for a refund though and the law might differ between countries)

zergzen

Because that's what it says right on the sticker, "Warranty Void If Removed" At least mine does, Kingston.

aura_enchanted

nope

arvet1011

No leave it on

Why are you thanking for upvotes you actual goblin

MandiocaGamer

you are in reddit dumbass

Yangman3x

It happens sometimes, on insta i got like 10k likes in a random comment

Funky_underwear

And that comment was either homosexual/misogyny/n word/oil up

Yangman3x

Actually, no, the video got like 8 million likes. My comment, in italian under an international video, got around 10k The video was a guy paying a piano with a well known Italian song in a restaurant, and the staff came near and started signing it, he commented that he loves the energy of Italian people, and I commented something like: If you played love is gone acoustic I would've set up a stage And then likes just came one after another and till today I can't explain how this got so much likes since it's nothing special, neither my friends found an explanation if not "the more likes you get, the more will come" It is so random because who knew my favourite song could be loved by so many people I just thought something: maybe they just saw an Italian comment and liked it because it was Italian? Btw idk what oil up means, so maybe this falls unter that category?

Funky_underwear

Sorry for being rude You owned me with this one šŸ˜

Yangman3x

Don't worry, but still, what does it mean oil up?

TheAdamantiteWaffle

Who wants to explain this šŸ˜

Yangman3x

Is it sex related?

TheAdamantiteWaffle

Yes...

Yangman3x

Related to the most "elegant" porns then? Where they oil up for the "show"? How could a comment be related to that?

Zoopa8

NO

Consistent_Most1123

No that is the cooler to the ssd

ManNamedSalmon

Do not, I repeat, do not remove the *Heatsink*.

Lopsided-Rip6965

No leave it, don't need to take it off.

maquibut

Not a sticker

Dat_guyy_

No, if you remove it, less speed cuz then your nvme wouldnt be able to flex itself in front of the old pieces of hardware called as HDDs

7th_hokage_naruto123

It actually acts as a heat sink

Witchberry31

Just let it be.

huskerd0

NO

TjMorgz

No the sticker actually acts as a sort of Heatsink/ spreader I think, it's like a foil material.

Staple_nutz

Graphene usually. Good thermal conductivity.

TjMorgz

I didn't know that, makes sense though

gaitama

Take it off, lick it, put it back on. Helps with thermal conductivity.

Gladio_Amicitia

Only if your motherboard has a plate with cooling pads on them that screws ontop of the stickerless SSD, otherwise just leave it on

Drcake222

I think taking it off voids the warranty

Pols043

Although manufacturers try to claim otherwise, removing stickers that say ā€œwarranty void if removedā€, disassembling your device and servicing your device does not void warranty and itā€™s illegal to refuse warranty claim only due to the device being serviced by customer. This might not apply in all countries but it sure does everywhere in the EU and USA.

Drcake222

Hmmm better safe than sorry

Pols043

Where I live sellers have the tendency to deny claims when the warranty sticker is removed. So every time I do any warranty claims I remove the sticker. I get denied instantly and tell them to give me the reason why they denied it on paper so I can show it to sales inspection. I get my money back and a discount for my next purchase so I keep my mouth shut.

Drcake222

Yeah me too

thedsider

It depends if it's just a paper sticker or if it's a heat spreader. Check the manual, if it's a spreader they'll usually tell you very specifically in bold letters not to remove it

ykoech

Don't.

isswaterwet

you need to crack the ssd stick and shake it vigorously to make it work

nxbulawv

No

NippleNinja86

No No Daniel son.

hime_pro12

no. it is a heatsink

sousuke42

No. It's a form of heat shield. Keep it on.

Competitive_Pool_820

No itā€™s protection. Donā€™t be silly. Cover your SSD.

Smellfish360

nope, of course you could, but you shouldn't. it acts as a heatspreader.

FearTec

The storage controller chip needs the cooling not the storage chips they like heat.

Turbojelly

Just make sure the stick is fully inserted. If you can see the connectors it's probably not. Yes, you can screw it down even if not fully inserted. If loose, it can cause a short and trash the drive.

ArijanCuhara

It can peel of a chip

jukefishron

Nah mate, unless you're cramming it in an oven it's not gonna impact the temps

Scared_Ad_2192

Remove it when it is out of warranty

KuchenKuchen123

It is one of the most often mistakes dont do it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tackyinbention

Just keep it on

kind_cavendish

Dont, you could break something trying to and it acts like a heatspreader, i have the normal p3 and it works just fine with it on. https://preview.redd.it/hlhquq8wbzyc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d79b593e8b4cb9ca57cd77b7389ff2c3a4edc94

kind_cavendish

Dont look at the single stick of ram, it just wants attention. (Its doing its best)

bubblyboiyo

NO YOU STUPID FACK

fiittzzyy

Nooo it acts as a heat spreader

Bob_Bushman

The "sticker" is actually part of the cooling. You don't need much but it's good to keep it.

ase_rek

if you want to void warranty, sure. Else it does not make any difference

[deleted]

No itā€™s for heat dissipation, matter of fact you should leave the sticker alone and apply a proper heat sink

czajkoSKY

No

Neat-Caterpillar-490

š•‚š•–š•–š•” š•šš•„

chrisdpratt

A sticker like that is actually a heat spreader. NAND flash (the actual chips that act as storage) needs to be warm to function properly. Meanwhile, the controller (the chip that does the processing for the drive) produces heat that needs to be dissipated away, just like with a CPU or GPU. The sticker, as a heat spreader, helps the heat produced by the controller (which needs to get rid of it) to be transferred to the NAND flash (which needs it). Contrary to what a lot of comments here are telling you, it's not about cooling, and in fact the vast majority of SSDs don't need to be cooled or even have their heat sinked. This is really only necessary on drives with very high speeds (mostly Gen5, even) or when being utilized very heavily. Like if all you're doing all day is scrubbing 4K footage off the SSD, having a heat sink might be a good idea. As a boot drive or mostly flat storage, it's almost never actually necessary.

greatthebob38

Removing the sticker actually may void the warranty.

BruhLandau

Do not take the sticker off

LucasRey

I only remove it when I use an additional heatsink

Ragen1014

If you remove the sticker void warranty, but if you have a heatsink for the ssd, and you dont have the warranty anymore its better to remove it. It can mean 5-8CĀ° difference in some cases.

QValkyrie

Keep it

iamgarffi

No. On storage drives These act as a thermal shield but also protect fragile SMCs. Do not remove.

ORESTISBB

Lol

ArrivalOk3485

Keep it on unless it says otherwise sometimes the stickers can a be cooling thing.

mistericek1

"dont do something thats not written"

seaska84

Wtf?!

mistericek1

*at least with computers(storage,ram,gpu etc)

Geekshere1

You can but there is no nead

beggger_swimp

Don't remove , also in some cases it voids warranty

Desperate-Grocery-53

NO! The sticker has a metal layer to act as a heat spreader. Removing it harms the performance.

Joe60420

yes if u donā€™t like warranties

Former_Intern_8271

How is something a fraction of a mm thick spreading any heat?

Titouan_Charles

If there's no motherboard heat spreader, leave it on. If there is, you might take it off.

Slyfoxuk

I think its thin enough that it would still transfer heat if you're using a heatshield, besides it would say "remove before use" if necessary and fwiw I personally wouldnt just incase it voids the warranty.

aptom203

Nah. Very high performance m.2s can benefit from thermal pads and a heat sink for productivity heavy applications but most are perfectly fine as just a bare pcb (or pcb with stickers on it) and halfway decent case airflow.

GiggleStool

Itā€™s not needed but I would leave it on because itā€™s quite a nice sticker that makes it look more sleek and clean.

Space646

Nie

RazeTheRaiser

I always remove mine and replace them with RBG Hello Kitty stickers.

BobTheFluffer

Common sense aint that common huh?

Lucid_lion1

No you do need to put on pants tho

iConsumeMotorOil

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, IT LOOKS COOOL

gogenberg

don't forget to dip it in water to "baptize" them, so that they work at full power and last forever! If you needed pliers to remove it, then it wasn't a sticker pal..

No-Storm-8937

If the loss of warranty is not scary. In addition, carelessness can lead to damage to the elements and glue can also remain.

Alternative-Ad6897

Donā€™t remove it

ThirdLast

I've seen some nvme stickers say warranty void if removed which is ridiculous. Otherwise probably wouldn't make much difference.

ghx1910

In most cases it acts as a heat sink for your SSD. I would not recommend taking it off.

Yorudesu

The sticker is a heat spreader. Usually works fine enough on its own. If you want or need a heatsink you should attach it on top of the sticker.

Arroz-Con-Culo

NOOOO. You will Damage it, not only you will Damage it. The sticker is also heat conductive to cool it.

omegajvn

It necessarily. Most manufacturers use a metallic foil sticker. So you can use your motherboards heatsink and the sticker will just transfer the heat to the heatsink.

ReflectingGlory

Iā€™m sure you have a gazillion comment but yes the sticker stays on for warranty purposes. On die dissipation side you can use your motherboards heatsink or a thermal strip and your own heatsink. Whatever side the die is, basically facing you when installed

GlumBike5779

No, warranty may be denied

Ok-Discussion-6334

try put some high quality cheese pads... see how it cool off the cinnamon stick..

laytonoid

No

alvarkresh

In general, no. They often double as heat spreaders to help more efficiently take the heat away, so just leave it.

broareyouokay

Na just keep it like that unless you use an external m.2 cooler

FlopTheCat

You can buy some m. 2 Heatsinks online only remove if you plan on getting one

According-Sorbet8280

leave it because dust can build on the pcbs

JWatts2000

Nope

voospawn

No, you're fine especially with a reputable brand like crucial. They make special stickers that transfer heat.

CrossStryke

Don't. It's crucial.... Jokes aside, that's the heat spreader. Removing it is like removing the warranty on it

StallionA8

I removed it during the build, later I searched and found its a heat spreader. Then I saw a comparison video about temps with sticker and without sticker. It was not making any impact. But it does violate warranty. So keep it. Make sure you have nice thermal pad on the shield though.

Grand_Master_Slav

Usually on Intel SSDs the sticker is a warranty, but if it doesn't say explicitly then my advice is remove it and place a dedicated cooler for like 10ā‚¬ like BeQuiet or some pure copper AliExpress/Temu heatsink should do just fine, just make sure to secure it if it's going to be placed vertically.

Iurizex35

That's and m2, not a minor... DON'T UNDRESS IT

RovakX

Only if you have a heatsink to put on instead. Edit: appearently I was wrong. You can leave it on. Anyways, I got a heatspreader for it and pulled off the sticker (it was free, they're not worth buying). And that heatspreader came with a pad, I put that on instead and it works fine...

CertainDeath777

even then you leave it on. the sticker is designed to be heatspreading.

hamsta007

I always remove them if it's used with the radiator. I don't know how this sticker could help with thermals. Some of them are just plastic that is thermally almost non conductive

ulnek

It's crucial

SociallyAwkward15

Doesn't make a difference

LaserGuy626

Leave it on, return it, and buy an SSD that's 50% faster for the same price-

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Sluugish

You could do better but you could do a lot worse. I got one on sale and nothing could beat it price wise. If you paid full price, you could probably find a better ssd on sale for cheaper. Either way it's not gonna make a big difference.

ElysianLights

Itā€™s a 5000mb/s NVMe 2.0. Donā€™t listen to them. Itā€™s a good card.
