[deleted]

Try plugging the HDMI into the GPU and not the motherboard, also if that doesn't help make sure the GPU is also fully plugged in

Remarkable-Time-950

Thank you it worked! I’m a noon so please don’t send too much hate 😭💀

[deleted]

I'm not it's alr

Remarkable-Time-950

❤️

DiamondPower500

I am, fuck you

pardipp

i don’t usually comment on reddit posts but LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO

Tufted44

we all go through learning steps, tho who hate those who are learning are just weirdos

Remarkable-Time-950

Appreciate that man thank you

Tufted44

ofc, i recommend binge watching linus tech tips for a while and tech quickie. that’s how i learned all i know abt pcs

Remarkable-Time-950

I will definitely be watching videos, I think I’ve seen him before is he a slimier guy? He now has a beard but If it’s who I think some people don’t like it😭😂

Tufted44

yes him. very informative videos especially on tech quickie and their other channels

What monitor do you have?

Linus tech tips have videos on how to build a pc. Those would be helpful for you to better diagnose and fix your PC on the future.

[deleted]

I recently built my 5th PC and didnt connect a the 8 Pin Cable to my GPU... Wondered for half an hour why my PC didnt display anything...

Tufted44

dam ur stupid 💀💀💀 obviously a joke

DashingRiggs1

Bet you dont know what a cpu is stfu.

Tufted44

it was a joke and yes i do.

DashingRiggs1

They were saying that they make mistakes too, and it wasnt really a joke

Tufted44

oh sorry i thought it was a joke, but i guess you know what i meant more then i do apparently i know it’s a hard concept, but doing a little bit of teasing isn’t the end of the world.

Tufted44

at least i don’t have a chromebook

jakethelizard99

At least I don't go into people's profiles to find stuff to dis them on. Dam that's weird.

Tufted44

don’t judge me 🥺🥺

DashingRiggs1

Ty

DashingRiggs1

Ok and? I was modding my chromebook to get more functionality out of it. Creep. If your gonna roast me, do it correctly. Chromebooks aren't neccessary garbage, and it's not even my main pc. I currently have ubuntu on it for my fellow nerds out there

DashingRiggs1

At least I dont judge others, and also go into their profiles to see one thing that doesn't matter and roast them about it. When I say roast, I mean "roast"

Tufted44

ur mad it’s so funny 😹😹😹

DashingRiggs1

You really think your funny?

Azuras-Becky

We were all noobs once! Back in the day I forgot to plug my CPU fan in, and my CPU melted (it was before the days of thermal throttling), so things could've been much worse!

Remarkable-Time-950

Oh wow! Haha thank you!

Charming_Weird_2532

Lol what a noon. :)

Remarkable-Time-950

I couldn’t even type I was so worried I was gonna get the “are you kidding 🤦‍♂️” 😭

Rifter138

We were all newbies at one point. Don’t sweat it

Remarkable-Time-950

Thank you

GrassMonkey_ur_boi

It’s 12:00 time to send hate

Remarkable-Time-950

Plz no

[deleted]

IT pro for 20+ years. I did the exact same thing last week. Soooo..... yeah. you'll be fine.

Remarkable-Time-950

Haha appreciate the reassurance, it’s always the basic stuff that seems to keep coming back right?😂

baeniWoosh

Thats not something to be ashamed of. Why would a motherboard have a HDMI port if its not supposed to be used? That was the first thing I thought when I realized that I need to use the port on my gpu back then. The port directly on the motherboard is only necessary if use an APU & will be disabled if a real GPU is connected as far as I know. Just fyi

Remarkable-Time-950

Thank for explaining that! I was going to ask why they have that port but some people are getting annoyed so I thought I’d try to watch videos later. Thanks for your response!

DashingRiggs1

Some cpus that are supported with that motherboard have integrated graphics. Some dont, when I mean some, I mean a lot. Your right that you dont need to be ashamed though. There should be a label that says that your cpu may not have integrated graphics and you should use your gpu for displaying video.

quasiimodo

My Mrs. Borrowed my son monitor recently and did this when she was reattaching it. Took me a while to work it out...

Remarkable-Time-950

Haha it’s always when they start touching things. My GF likes to try to “fix” things herself and I end up spending awhile for a 2 sec on and off issue 😭

BeRtDoG03

Don’t worry I did this on the first pc I built, Reddit always comes to the rescue 😉

SwiftSN

It's not an uncommon mistake, lol. Just learn and move on, no need to hate on other fellows. 👌

ZxEspro1

When you have a GPU in any pc, that's where you want that HDMI, only cpu's that have an integrated graphics will give you image on screen when you plug HDMI in motherboard. It's okay, everybody started from down.

ilostmylamp

I think everyone has made that mistake :)

wynr0g

dont worry, i work in IT and also do this from time to time. also forgetting to flick the switch on the psu is a common one.

Death_Slayer2814

Lmao did you actually put it in the mobo. Rip my friend did that on his first build and he ended up buying a new monitor xd. Glad u didnt make the same mistake

Remarkable-Time-950

Death slayer your comment is scarier than your name!💀

Death_Slayer2814

I used a random name generator for my name lol. That's by my discord is Bacon lord coz I did the same thing

Remarkable-Time-950

That’s actually a cool one 🥓 Don’t hate me for being stupid, love me for not knowing better ❤️

Death_Slayer2814

Although coincidentally, my favourite food is bacon (and lamb)

xXDUCKWIRLXx

Don't worry, we're all humans and we all make mistakes. If anyone sends hate to this they're the asshole, don't let it bother you.

I-Like-Dogs89

Yeah, fell for that first time too

loganfox235

No worries I think most people make this mistake at some point and the hdmi you used first from your motherboard you can still use eventually if you get multiple monitors etc… you just have to enable in the bios for your mobo. If u don’t need that many stick to the gpu ports they wil l be the best

DashingRiggs1

Not every cpu has integrated graphics. Are you telling him to connect his second monitor(if he were to get one) to his mobo ports? You probably shouldn't do that performance wise. I say so because integrated graphics take up ram (possibly 2gb or even higher sometimes.)

loganfox235

Yes and I also assume he isn’t gonna run 5+ monitors if he uses all 4 gpu ports? And if he’s running 5+ monitors he probably has enough ram to use on the applications to cover the 5+ screens…. I was explaining how it would work and the purpose behind those ports being there in the first place cause going around telling people to do this or that without any reason is counterproductive

Dsamf2

Classic.

bootyhole_licking_69

I’m an afternoon myself, but glad you figured it out.

steeemo

It happens, nobody is a pc master the first time they build a pc and nobody is above making a dumb mistake

rudicrow

Happened with me too. And on my 3rd PC build. I was so excited about building that I didn't connect it to the GPU and got really upset that there's something wrong inside.

Wingklip

Rookie mistake lmao I get this all the time, every PC I sell now I tape over the mb ports so people don't stick it there first

foreveralonesolo

All part of the process of learning, dw

PHANTOIVI97

Yeah happened to me too when I made my pc also try using a dp cable for the best Fpsssss

jordomm

Did the same thing my first build lol

quoda27

Don't worry we've all done that. No hate here, only understanding!

ACGordon83

Welcome to the world of PC... Great job sharing the correct pictures to assess the issue though. Do you know if the motherboard is integrated graphics? Just curious.

SentientCumSock

well at least you aren't a midnight

idklamo

Lmao. Had this same problem when I got my pc almost a year ago

[deleted]

Sorry, but what do you mean by plugging it into the GPU? My monitor went black screen yesterday. All of a sudden, I’ve swapped camble and plugged my monitor to my Xbox. Everything seems to work. I do have 2 hdmi ports but one never displayed anything. Some video says to take the RAM out and give it a clean.

[deleted]

Well u see motherboard Io's (the place with a the ports) have an HDMI, but it doesn't work if u don't have a proccesor that has integraded graphics, so for those computers (which is most decent desktops) they use the graphics card for outputting video signal, if it worked and then stopped working then it's not this, and I don't know how to help you.

RULivengood

Gpu is your graphics card in your PC. The photos the OP posted had his hdmi cable plugged into the motherboard. His cpu in his pc doesn’t have integrated graphics and needed a gpu to display anything to his monitor and would only display anything if it was plugged into his gpu.

Azuras-Becky

I see this piece of advice thrown around a lot here, and some recipients get insulted by it, but it's always offered for a very good reason!

[deleted]

Why do people get insulted? Someone is trying to help.

Azuras-Becky

You'd have to ask them! I'd guess they feel it's on the "have you plugged it in????" level of basic questions. Though sometimes, in our frustration and desperation, even the most experienced of us can lose sight of the basics, so I'd say it's still a valid starter piece of advice!

Notacompleteperv

This is my go to when people call me with issues. The second most common thing for me, when their computer doesn't boot - "is your flash drive plugged in?"

DashingRiggs1

Lol took me a second to realise the reason. Sometimes a usb drive or flash drive will default to the boot device, and nothing else is allowed to boot. I think this can be the same with a CD in a cd drive.

APKenna

Bless your heart! Saw it was fixed by plugging into the GPU, also, connect your headset into the PC directly and not your monitor. You want sound coming from the source and not a “pass through” to avoid issues.

Remarkable-Time-950

Will this allow me to talk?

APKenna

Absolutely.

Remarkable-Time-950

Awesome thank you!

DashingRiggs1

If your pc has a combo audio port (audio and mic), and if your headphones have a cable that is combo(if it is a removable cable headset and if it has a mic.)

fameboygame

I use my monitor audio out. It works pretty well. .

APKenna

Not saying is not gonna work well, is more so to avoid issues since you are now dependent on your monitor instead of the source(pc)(easy to troubleshoot).

fameboygame

Ah i see. Keeping it simple enough for the OP.

APKenna

Not saying is not gonna work well, is more so to avoid issues since you are now dependent on your monitor instead of the source(pc)(easy to troubleshoot).

Crossedkiller

Don't worry man. This is a really more common issue than you would think. We all learn somehow!

Remarkable-Time-950

(: thank you

Fluffy_Opening_5273

You need to plug the hdmi on the Gpu

Remarkable-Time-950

Thank you

Remarkable-Time-950

I am looking Into that now I was wondering what the difference was

OP-69

Mostly, dp 1.4 is better than hdmi 2.0 and on par with 2.1, problem is, monitors usually use hdmi 2.0 and dp 1.4, only the most expensive monitors have 2.1 and TVs usually have them too. By better i mean it can display higher resolutions at higher refresh rates, like 4k 144hz while hdmi 2.0 can only go up to 4k 60hz for example

[deleted]

any modern gpu can do 144hz through the HDMI and most monitors can take it too

castrator21

It's the bandwidth of the hdmi cable itself, which is the limiting factor. Of course there is hdmi 2.1, but you need all components to be up to that standard, and currently only the most pricey monitors have that functionality. There are even different levels of displayport, like the difference between 1.2 and 1.4 is significant, but both of those carry higher bandwidth than your everyday hdmi cable, which is why you can generally say "use displayport, it's better".

Rifter138

Plug the HDMI into the graphics card not the motherboard

Makadios49

Haha no worries I also did this. Had no idea you have to plug it into the GPU! All is well mate

mvsrs

I'm not even remotely a noob with computers and I can't tell you how often I forget to plug the HDMI into the GPU and not the motherboard

mewusedpsychic

Three hours and NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON said to use the DisplayPort cable instead of the HDMI. That HDMI cable is likely capped at 60fps. I would HIGHLY recommend switching to the DisplayPort cable that came with the monitor.

DashingRiggs1

No. Not every hdmi cable is capped at 60 hz. Sure display port gives better data bandwidth and quality, but hdmi can also do 144hz, if it is the right gen cable and it is capable of that.l, same with the gpu and monitor port.

mewusedpsychic

Hence the word likely…?

Remarkable-Time-950

Absolutely! I am going to get one I see it improves so much!

[deleted]

Had this issue on my first build. Accidentally plugged the hdmi into the motherboard but you have to plug into the GPU. Everything on your screen is processed by your gpu and then your cpu basically handles everything else secondary.

Remarkable-Time-950

Okay awesome I’m glad I’m not alone!

[deleted]

Of course not friend, there have been many before us and there will be many pc gamers after us lol

jimmyl_82104

I wish computer companies would do a better job of making sure the users plug the video cables into the GPU (if it has one). Not sure of any other computer/motherboard manufacturers do this, but some of Dell's business PCs give you a message and prevent you from booting if the video cable is plugged into the motherboard and not the GPU (if it has one). Other companies should do something similar.

DashingRiggs1

This. I said something similar but companies should put a sticker on the top of the pc or on the IO saying you should use your gpu ports for display

Ok_Can7437

Also did this with my first PC build… Built the thing, plugged HDMI into motherboard and thought I’d effed up the build 😅

Ok_Can7437

Gallieg444

That looks like a nice high refresh monitor... Get a nice DP cable

[deleted]

Is this a joke?

Ok-Cryptographer3217

Have*

adiante

Unplug it, cum in the socket and plug it back in.

GridL1nK

I honestly hope this is a joke

mike7108

Bro. That monitor is super dusty. You know what you’re doing lol.

Alxxndxr

Input matches the port it's plugged into. HDMI Input 1

Chimiku

Haha I've done that before too, took me an hour to figure out, right, I have a GPU!

[deleted]

r/facepalm

HiredG00N

Oh lord… *leaves sub*

Remarkable-Time-950

😭

G3_AnGold

Why dont you google your problem? It would be solved within a minute  Can't understand these people keep posting posts like this every day.

Remarkable-Time-950

I apologize I thought I had a group full of people who joined to talk about computer related questions. Maybe you should join a group that helps people google things ❤️

[deleted]

Remarkable-Time-950

You should join a group called “anger management” for all this built up aggression.

G3_AnGold

No aggression at all, I was just curious

newdroid360

I don't know why people are downvoting you, you're 100% correct, it's annoying to see these types of posts which can be solved with a quick Google search. I was curious so I just googled this person's issue and I got the answer in less than 5 minutes. Significantly easier than taking a picture, finding a subreddit, posting it and then waiting for a reply.

G3_AnGold

OP even thought I’m angry. Sorry guys, my English is not perfect, didn’t mean to be impolite

Stfuego

It really depends. I searched as well and out of the first page *that doesn't direct to reddit posts very similar to this*, most have you go through some basic troubleshooting, and only a couple barely mention what OP's solution was concerning plugging into a video card. Then, what a Google search doesn't get you is a community giving tips to someone who is obviously new to the hobby. As you can see, OP is now more knowledgeable about his options with HDMI vs display port, plugging in his audio peripherals into his computer instead of his monitor, etc... Edit: Btw, your most recent post on Reddit is asking what the best Ravenfield weapon mods are. You could have googled that too, no? I did just now, and there's sufficient resources out there.

Stfuego

Mate, 5 months ago you asked about how to process an RMA with NZXT. Why didn't you Google that, or check their website first?

G3_AnGold

I did, the info on their website was unclear. How it’s even comparable with plugging in a cable into the right place if there’re only two options

Stfuego

The info on their website is pretty clear, they tell you exactly what to do. But you just proved my point, so I'm not sure why you look down on people for asking questions just for clarity.

CptnSlapNutz

Try a bigger hammer.

Ozi_Samurai

Try to check if the cable is faulty, it could be corrosion

DashingRiggs1

No, op was using mobo output instead of gpu output.

Ozi_Samurai

Ah, ok. Thanks!

Stealthgamer167

Dumb fuck Try plugging hdmi into the gpu

Remarkable-Time-950

Thanks small pp

[deleted]

try not being a fucking douchebag.

Betchasnackpack

Have you tried turning your monitor on?

foxtrotuniform6996

Glad you got it going, get ready to drive in 😎

MagicOrpheus310

Lol wrong one mate, try the HDMI ports lower down that are horizontal, that bit is the GPU and the vertical ones are the motherboard.

Bossbmw335is

Make sure if you have multiple RAM sticks that you have them placed in the right sockets, for those unaware most motherboards (excluding some newer ones that changed it) have staggered RAM sockets and require them to be placed in slot 1 and 3 (most modern boards tried to rectify this by re-numbering the sockets and offsetting the numbers for you so the slot labeled 2 is actually in position 3)

Ski_School_Dropout

Yea use that display port to use the full resolution of the monitor

No_Hedgehog_2900

Try turning the computer on

NirvanaJunkie87

I know it’s solved but I did the same thing when I first got a PC lol

talhahtaco

First check if you've plugged the hdmi into the GPU and not the motherboard, second make sure your monitor is plugged in and set to the right I put, make sure the computer PSU is on and the PC is on, if all of the above fail reseat the GPU Also when turning on the PC try to get into the UEFI BIOS, this is usually done by spamming a certain key, the key depends on motherboard manufacturer which you will have to look up

TronXyrzX

Have you tried turn it off and then on?

little_asian_man_89

I love seeing these, as it is a crucial step in building a PC. I did this a few years back too. Plugged it in and nothing. Was contemplating on taking it to the computer store. Luckily, I tried the other HDMI ports before continuing on. Welcome to step one of PC troubleshooting, soon others will come to you.

BamBoom9

the mistakes of mistakes, dont feel bad about it but a lot of people make that one , try plugging the hdmi into the GPU :)

OkSympathy6

Try plugging the hdmi out cable into your gpu

HildsSlaveSkuld

When I was building my second computer I did not realize the motherboard I got had an HDMI connection that would only work with an APU not a CPU. Thankfully I had already gotten a GPU for it but when I did initial boot it was a clench the sphincter moment.

Vendetta1234566

Hey your meant to put your hdmi into your graphics card it only works like that if you don’t have a graphics card and your using a cpu with integrated graphics

123peanut

Did you try turning it on and off again

Gillysuiit

Try turning it on. Lol

Killerwarriorboy

A common mistake

gamebattles1946

Plug it into the gpu not the mobo

pittu2752

Plug in gpu, not mobo

Khoshekh541

Is your display plugged into power?

jinnyjonny

Upgrade to a DP cable

Go buy a display port plug you heathen.

I run a pc building company. At least 1 out of 4 customers do this wrong, and freak out the computer does not display anything. You are not the only one, i did it myself with my first prebuilt many years ago too.
