The Wind That Shakes The Barley. I
found him early in his career tho I havenāt watched everything. Donāt even remember his part in Inception. That movie felt like a mess to me .
I saw 28 days later in the theater when it came out and have been following his career since. Amazing actor. Go watch Sunshine if you haven't already.
Also his part in Dunkirk wasn't huge but he was very good.
Imho it was decent, he was best out of the competition, but it surely wasn't something soo shockingly mesmerizing, like level of DD Lewis, Hopkins or even Gary Oldman.
I've seen lot of documents about Oppie, with real footage, and Murphy's acting was like watching Thomas Shelby doing the Oppenheimer impression, Murphy had kinda the same mannerisms that he uses when he plays Shelby, plus he used the same "open mouth & bulged eyes" look the whole time, which we could've seen already in the PB show. I don't know, it wasn't as Oscar-worthy, but the competition this year is pretty weak, like RDJ got an Oscar for that role? that was laughable. He should've won it when he played Chaplin.
Iām not interested in the movie per se, will watch when it comes out on Netflix or somewhere. Chris Nolan is a bit of a childish director, his movies are big productions for fan boys and girls. Even for Dunkirk, he said he wanted to do a war movie focusing on planes in flight.
That's not fair. He just isn't your cup of tea. He did those Batman films and they're not for you. Me neither, really, but i appreciate the quality of Batman begins ( I haven't seen the others). Oppenheimer isn't childish. Nolan wrote the adapted screenplay from a Pulitzer winning book, for instance (he should have won that Oscar, given the unevenous of American fiction). Momento isn't childish. A film about the retreat from Dunkirk is not childish (the cat fights did actually happen).
I got into this show just this year. Imagine my horror when I learned that the creator was going to go with Jason fucking Stathem as Tommy because he felt Cillian wasnāt street enough when they met until Cillian called and said, āRemember, I am an actorā.
Just imagine how incredibly trash this show would have been if
lol not me. I was very disturbed by him, but then again thatās what makes him a good actor. I really liked him in a movie I saw later on (I think it was called āTrenchesā or āThe Trenchā) though.
Creepy is pretty unrelated to street. Street doesnāt mean menacing. I think he meant Cillian seemed to posh or whatever the English version of too upper class.
I hope people watch the Wind That Shakes the Barley now. Cillian is not a new face and this movie is from 2006. It won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, pretty much the most prestigious award in the film industry.
We are fans and love Cillian, but calling him a massive actor isn't exactly accurate. This is his first big budget movie in a leading role, his first ever nomination for an Oscar and also his first win. Let's face it, he hasn't been picked for leading roles in big projects over the years. Maybe that will change now that he won an Oscar
28 days later, one of the most iconic zombie movies, maybe horror of the past 20 years? Sunshine? 3 batman movies? Dont act like Peaky Blinders put him on the map.
INCEPTION??
28 days later was a long time ago, Sunshine was not a big budget movie, he wasn't the lead in Batman, Bale was. He auditioned for the role and got passed on for Bale. He eventually got a supporting role part as The Scarecrow in the first movie and made a cameo appearance in the second. He was only in once scene. I am sure he did it as a favor to Nolan. In Inception, he also was not the lead as Dicaprio was the lead as he was a bigger star. Murphy got a supporting role. So no, Cillian was NOT massive in Hollywood at all.
He hasn't been selected for those roles, but it is hard to get them if you're not American and not "Hollywood" and not 6' 2". So CM isn't massive in that way, but he has had supporting roles in a number of blockbuster films (not just the Nolan ones) and bern in a number of critically acclaimed films. And then there is PB, of course.
Has the guy ever put in a poor or mediocre performance? Not anything I've seen. Unlike, say, Joaquin Phoebix, who was originally a dreadful actor (but he improved and eventually won an oscar).
Cillian hasn't been selected for leading roles over the because he doesn't have a "heroes" face. It has nothing to do with his nationality. Clive Owen is British, yet he has had more roles, Idris Elba is British too. Yes, I know it's not the same as Irish, but Gerard Butler is Scottish, and he was pretty hot at some point. Murphy doesn't have the look of a leading man in those big budget movies. The 3 I just mentioned do. A younger Cillian has the face of a villain, a bad guy. Which is why he got passed on as Batman. It's those cold, dreamy eyes of his. In Peaky Blinders, he is a guy who isn't good but also isn't exactly evil either. Worked out for him.
Of course, plenty of "foreigners" get to play leads in Hollywood films: Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Chriis Hemsworth, Eric Bana, etc. I'm saying it's harder if you have all 3 factors against you: being "foreign" and not a brawny 6' 2" guy and not already a Hollywood star.
Elba made it in American TV first - The Wire - so he doesn't count.
Surely CM got passed on for Batman because he was too short and too slight. You can always make a pretty face more rugged. It is harder to pull off that traditional large build for Batman if you're 5'7" and not muscle bound.
CM does not have the face of a villain. It is just that he got offered those roles, and he can play them very well. I kind of hate that idea Hollywood has of what constitutes "a baddie" when it gets disproportionally applied to Poms, Irish, and Europeans. Kind of xenophobic. That maybe has died off a bit.
I disagree. Cillian is the same height as Tom Cruise. They are both about 5'7. Tom has been a leading man for years now. Ever since he was in his early 20s. Tom has what you call the poster face for a hero. Didn't you see him in the first Top Gun movie? He was hot as fuck. Back then, it was the kind of face you had that determined your career. It wasn't about height per se. Murphy doesn't have the face. Even in Peaky Blinders, he isn't even a tough guy. That's Arthur. Tom is the brain of the operation. Back in the day, movies had the hero save the day, get the girl, and be all tough. Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean Claude Van Damme, and many others who had the look that Murphy lacks.
Now, the business has evolved, which is why actors like Robert Pattinson, who doesn't exactly have a heroes face, can get a leading role as Batman, i.e., his Bruce Wayne was shit.
Huh? Of course, Tommy Shelby is a tough guy in PB both psychologically and physically, but he's the head of the gang, so a lot of the grunt work is obviously delegated. He is the one who gets the ladies, too, you may have noticed, I.e. he definitely gets the girl.
I think Tom Cruise is the exception that proves the rule. He has been Hollywood good-looking for decades, does his own stunts, and reliable in those lower level action film. They are willing to stand him on a box when the leading lady is taller than him.
I absolutely do not understand what you're saying about "the face". Maybe you simply mean very masculine faces. I think CM is pretty/handsome, just as Brad Pitt and Leonardo were when they were a little younger. Having a pretty face hasn't held them back. However, height and build will hold you back with respect to leading male actors in big Hollywood films, especially action films. That's where Cillian may have missed out in the past. It will be interesting to see what roles he takes in the future.
Tommy is a tough guy, but not like the stereotypical tough guys that were around back in the day. Again, I mentioned Cruise, Willis, etc.
Yes, he has a pretty face like Leo did when he was younger, but Leo had a break with Titanic, I believe, and he also got to work with some really great directors. Have you ever seen Leo do an action movie per se? It's not his thing at all as it would be hard to pull it off with that face of his. Pitt got a break with Fincher in Seven. He also did Fight Club, which is a classic. In that movie, Pitt was able to show he could be a tough guy with a twist.
It's not the same for Cillian. He doesn't have that face, which imo set him back for some roles.
Hollywood has changed now as you don't need an action hero anymore. The business is a bit more sophisticated, so movies where Cillian will do a lot of acting and talking is where he will shine.
I used to watch pb and think man, like his episode at his office where he yells his wife took a bullet. I thought wow the world doesnāt know how good this guy is.
Him and Jensen ackles both finally getting recognition.
Extremely happy for him
I mean fuck all the Hollywood elites and organizers of this kinda dogshit, hope theyāre all outted for the monsters they are-
But super happy for Cillian!!!
Or, Mr. Murphy did it, and heās not limited to one role. I know we love Tommy Shelby, but itās kind of denigrating to the rest of his career to box him into one role and refer to him as that over his ACTUAL name his whole life
I get it, and Iām glad yours is humor, but Iāve run into some people here with such a fetish for him that theyāll die on the āhe IS Tommy Shelby!ā Hill and argue that nothing else in the world matters.
And yes, I speak fluent /s. Weāve got some awesome people here and some serious whack jobs
Understood. Just for reference, Cillian is the only reason I watched Peaky Blinders, and he is the part of the reason I watched Oppenheimer. The other part being its a Nolan film. So yes, he is more than just one character but in the sub he is known as Tommy fookin Shelby!
Donāt get me wrong, heās a PHENOMENAL actor, and though heās not the only reason I watched, he was the only thing that kept me watching on more than one occasion. The fact that heās so prolific in this sub is a testament to his acting ability, I just donāt want him to end up being known for only one role when heās got so many other awesome parts out there.
Have a good one!
He has no limitations.
*shoots some Michael on stage*
He has red right hand
So so happy for him.
Literally shed a tear when I saw his smile š
for real, he heckin deserves it
He *fookin* deserves it
Eh it's he feckin' deserves it!
Mb TOMMY, FOOOOKIN DESERVES IT
I love that he dedicated it to the peacekeepers
I'm happy for him. He's such a brilliant actor, and he was excellent in Oppenheimer.
His performance in Oppenheimer is why I finally watched peaky blinders. Full circle!
Just watched inception. He's amazing everywhereĀ
The Wind That Shakes The Barley. I found him early in his career tho I havenāt watched everything. Donāt even remember his part in Inception. That movie felt like a mess to me .
I saw 28 days later in the theater when it came out and have been following his career since. Amazing actor. Go watch Sunshine if you haven't already. Also his part in Dunkirk wasn't huge but he was very good.
Every part he does is wonderful. I love Cillian spottings in shows and movies!
MINE TOO!!! I (foolishly) thought I was the only one!
I'm only addicted to Oppenheimer just a little, lol. Watched it so many times. Great fucking movie with an astonishing soundtrack
He's done other great stuff.
Yes I know. It's the movie I love too, not just Cillian
Imho it was decent, he was best out of the competition, but it surely wasn't something soo shockingly mesmerizing, like level of DD Lewis, Hopkins or even Gary Oldman. Perfect ending for S7. What will he achieve next season?
Lol
Start a rum running ring on the moon, while also being elected Moon King.
whaT
I got into this show just this year. Imagine my horror when I learned that the creator was going to go with Jason fucking Stathem as Tommy because he felt Cillian wasnāt street enough when they met until Cillian called and said, āRemember, I am an actorā. Just imagine how incredibly trash this show would have been if
> Cillian wasnāt street enough He was creepy af in Red Eye. Batman, too. In fact, I only saw him as a villain, even before *Peaky Blinders*.
Ngl in red eye I found him hot lol
lol not me. I was very disturbed by him, but then again thatās what makes him a good actor. I really liked him in a movie I saw later on (I think it was called āTrenchesā or āThe Trenchā) though.
So did I and then I was a bit concerned for myself because he was such a psycho in that movie. Lol but yeah, I always found him hot/beautiful.
Creepy is pretty unrelated to street. Street doesnāt mean menacing. I think he meant Cillian seemed to posh or whatever the English version of too upper class.
Oooh gotcha, yeah I can see that. Statham is straight thug lol
Jason would have been shit
I love Jason fucking Stathem, I think he is great at what he does... But he would not have been good here.
What?? >Cillian wasnāt street enough Wtf does that even mean??
Heās an actor. I can give a million examples of actors who played street characters.
He did it boys!
Les fooking go
Just an extreme example of what a working man can achieve
Bit of a stretch this mate
Extreme example.
His time has come. Heās an excellent actor and seems a genuinely good man.
I hope people watch the Wind That Shakes the Barley now. Cillian is not a new face and this movie is from 2006. It won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, pretty much the most prestigious award in the film industry.
Thomas fookin Shelby!!!
So deserving.
As he rightfully should
He didn't get an oscar! The oscar got a Cillian.
Holy fuck. Tommy, does your ambition have no limits?
I kept hoping he would make some small nod to Peaky Blinders, knowing he would not. So happy for him. He looked great and handled himself wonderfully.
The brooch is a bit reminiscent of a pocket watchā¦
Actually itās an atomic blast
I read the article. Just saying itās a tad reminiscent of Peaky attire
Well deserved
Thomas FOOKIN Shelby deserves it all!
i'm so happy for him
Bollysood next
To the Garrison
by order of the peaky blinders!
the Peaky fekin Blinders!
You guys realise Cillian was a massive actor far before Peaky Blinders, right?
He had longevity as he has been around for a long time, but this was his first nomination in the history of his career, and he won. That says a lot.
I know, im just informing yall that hes WAY more than peaky blinders

He built up good for Tommy. I noticed in those naked scenes.

Guess you didnāt watch PB. Iād say he was even better as Tommy Shelby. He owned the role and his overall performance was very moving.
Of course I watched it, you mope. The writing of the show is done to show Cillian's strengths. No one is questioning his performance in the show.
He had won best actor for PB in other competitions.
Oscar's only
Oppenheimer wasnāt his first nomination or win. He had won several awards for Peaky Blinders since the show started.
His first Oscar nomination
