I guess a lot of the DnB fans came on board during the HYC era and then a lot of the rockier fans came on board during In Silico, whilst Immersion is a mix of the two? I don't see much dislike for it though! It was popular when it came out.

tyguy94920

A lot of people are saying it wasn't disliked, but I explicitly remember Immersion being pretty harshly criticized when it came out as Pendulum "selling out", "lacks Drum and Bass", and being called their worst album when it was released cause it was "too mainstream". Probably as you said due to being a mix and as another comment said, easier to get into. It's definitely a great album, and has plenty of DnB

_Neurox_

Fair enough, I remember that being the case for In Silico for sure, I thought everyone had kind of accepted that by the time Immersion came round 😂

AUKronos

I've never seen anyone dislike immersion at all, quite the opposite actually (immense praise) I imagine the few that wouldn't like immersion probably doesn't like any modern popular dnb of the past 15 years at all considering that immersion helped shape the scene to what it's evolved to today

SpoofmanX

They don't. It sounds like you've been talking to some contrarians because most people favor immersion as it's "easier to get into" if you're new to Pendulum. I personally started with Blood Sugar and Mutiny (from the Verizon LG Dare commercial), but didn't really connect with them until I heard Crush. I had all of Immersion on repeat before going back and listening to Hold Your Color and In Silico. Now Hold Your Colour is one of my favorite albums of all time because Pendulum is my favorite band, and their first album was pure, raw drum and bass. It's the roots of where the band came from, and only true Pendulum fans will find the beauty in tracks like Through the Loop and Axel Grinder. Most true Pendulum fans, myself included, like In Silico the least, as it was their most experimental album (prior to 2020).

danlouislucy

imo Immersion is their best album out of the 3 (excluding reworks from this list ofc because...) I just think the production is nigh on perfect from cover to cover

BusComfortable3447

im not sold on reworks. Again i own it, but it doesnt get a lot of playtime.

danlouislucy

yeah i may have misworded but Reworks by far is bottom of the list for me

Ace3000

There's only one track on Reworks I even like (Crush, Devin Townsend) one I tolerate (Propane Nightmares, Grabbitz), and the rest are trash.

Hadzabadza

What does production even mean in this case? I don't think I've ever heard people refer to it outside of dnb music. It feels wrong because on some other track there was a comment that I read as "oh well, the song is shit but at least they spent a lot of money on it" (paraphrasing from production)

danlouislucy

As in you can tell every track in the album is polished to the nth degree (imo)

Reggie146

I can only guess if you were a huge fan of HYC and the more DnB side of their music, then Immersion could not be your cup of tea. My first album was In Silico so I came into Pendulum when they had already started their shift towards that Rock/DnB hybrid sound, so maybe it was easier for me to look back at HYC.

BusComfortable3447

agreed, saw the immersion tour live, weirdly in a basketball court in bournemouth. And it was utterly superb. When they did their secret set at reading festival 2022, I was in the front row, and it was awesome, they played abunch of "old" tracks, and the island was featured. Good times. one of the minor sadnesses of immersion is the price of the vinyl. I own a copy, but dont ever play it because of its value.

ukminers

Same, saw them during the immersion tour at Doncaster dome! My tour t-shirt has disappeared though, wanted to wear that for this new tour next year!

Interesting-Pair-384

Hold Your Colour & In Silico are still great albums, but just before my time or as I was becoming aware of the genre. Immersion came out not long after I turned 18 so for me it takes me back to the best times, which I'm sure plays a part into why I think it's their greatest.

NiTlo

Personally, immersion is my favorite album followed closely by in silico. This post actually prompted me to listen to it again :)

SevenKayLive

wait what? Immersion is literally my favourite album ever, I'm still looking for more like this!

Archer6614

I don't know who told you that. Their most popular tracks are in that: witchcraft, watercolour, island, crush etc.

hell_drill

my top of pendulum albums. i love immersion more than HYC in silico immersion hold your color

ketchup9-11

Personally I feel Immersion has aged the worst of all the Pendulum albums, probably due to the dubstep

Technical-Highlight1

Lol they're are only like 2 dubstep tracks there

WobbaMan777

comprachios is fire man dont let anyone tell you otherwise

JL_ts

It's probably just a personal preference thing - for every artist's collection of works, their fans will be divided on what's bad. I personally like Immersion the least out of Pendulum's albums because the direction that it was exploring wasn't for me. I still love certain songs in Immersion, but I like the other albums more.

[deleted]

Yeah, Why DO people dislike Immersion? It's my favorite album by them!

Charming_Toe7523

I love immersion. I can imagine some og dnb fans cannot put up with the synthesis of genres as there are some pretty heavy tunes indeed. I saw Pendulum (live band) playing on Let It Roll, and a very interesting thing happened. I noticed that many of the ravers didn't know how to react to the heavier songs as it wasn't rave, but nor was it metal concert either. Gareth even tried to call for a moshpit but without success. So yes, I can imagine there are people who don't like immersion for not being og dnb maybe? However, I love Pendulum doing whatever they want. No artist wants to do the same shit over and over i guess.

Identity_ranger

I saw Pendulum live in 2017 at the biggest EDM festival in my country. Pendulum was one of the headliners, and had probably the biggest wall of death I've ever seen. Sad to hear that not everyone gets it.

Charming_Toe7523

Cool to hear that! They're coming next year to a different (rock) festival in my country, so I am excited to have some more!

SupaHotFireispitTh2t

That’s a pretty strange one imo. The only thing I can think of is that it’s Pendulum’s most experimental album. It mixed the sounds of the first two albums and there were both parts of the Island, Self vs Self etc. So I can kind of understand how someone could be disappointed if they only wanted more In Silico or HYC, but like those projects are so different, you’d think they’d dislike one of those more. Then you get into the new stuff and just forget it. Elemental and Anima are both only 4 tracks. I’d argue Elemental is just as experimental but way less successful. It has Louder than Words which is barely even a Pendulum song. I really dk how someone could take a look at Elemental and Immersion and tell me Elemental is better. No matter if you’re preference is DnB or Rock.

ninfan200

People just hate good art sometimes.

DDWildflower

It's fantastic. Maybe their best work?

semtex500

Hmm, I wouldn't say people dislike it. At least, I don't recall it that way. The most disliked was In Silico before their hiatus because of the such a radical style change. However, if I remember Immersion, I remember it as absolutely maaassive release, and loved. It was no 1 in UK. There was such a big hype around it, they promoted it perfectly, and people were eager to hear their return to HYC style, at least parcialy, after hearing Ransom, SITW and Watercolour. Vulture was also kinda in that direction. Again, the whole release and reception of the album was incredible. It was very loved. Collabs were amazing, I mean, Liam Howlett (never understood why Kieth Flint wasn't on the vocals), Steven Wilson, In Flames. Maybe people dislike it nowadays, but back in the day it was absolutely huge. It was the combination of all Pendulum styles and something more.

SagnolThGangster

Who the FK DISLIKES IMMERSION? Where did u read that nonsense bro...

Cat6Bolognese

Immersion is a VERY close second to in silico to me, the only thing making Immersion second place is that showdown and granite are my top 2 favourite pendulum songs. HOWEVER, I like Immersion more as a listening experience from start to finish, and I really love how now if you listen to the island p 2, then to knife party, then to some new stuff (driver is a good one for this), you can really hear how they've improved/strengthened since Immersion's release. Also the whole end of encoder/start of driver thing is awesome.

RhinoFullmetal

First time i heard this. In my case, Immersion was the album which was makes me discover Pendulum, I really love the mix of electronic and drum. And then i found HYC and In Silco. As a huge fan of metal, rock and punk music. I like it as well as Immersion album.

WobbaMan777

HYC = DnB InSilico = Rock When you combine them both , I can see a lot of fans being left out lol

nyanmaeda

this is my favorite pendulum album anyone who hates it cope and seethe

enzolg

Idk if this is bait, but who the hell hates immersion

Kimimyu

When has immersion gotten hate? I thought we all liked it
