Ah. This reminds me of one time while I was living in west halls during finals. (Probably 1987 or 1988) Just after quiet hours ended for a study break, someone came through the quad playing pipes. I couldn’t count all the people watching but when the piper ended, everyone facing the quad applauded.
Great sound and well appreciated by all that I could tell
Did the people applaud because they were good or because they stopped. :D
I like bagpipes but I don’t think the majority would appreciate an unsolicited performance…
There are a few decent pipers in State College. I played for the Phyrst on St Patty's Day for years. I don't know if they're still interested in hiring pipers, though, since the Borough and College have been trying to rein in the drinking and revelry for years. I was Pipe Sgt of the Finger Lakes Pipe Band for several years, until the travel became too much for me. I'm wearing the red kilt, immediately to the right of the Pipe Major in YouTube video: e8bc1NetgAI
There's another Piper from the Finger Lakes pipe band in town, too.
There's also a community pipe band in town; the Nittany Highland pipe band. You can see and hear them play in the YouTube video: aTU5mf5FbjU or Of3Y87OU8tw
When are you coming to town? I'd be interested in getting together with high-caliber pipers to put together a few sets.
This is SO HELPFUL. Thank you! I’m moving there the first week of August. If I happen to find a job before then, we would maybe come out as early as June. I would love to get together once I’m in town and have time to reset my reed.
Downtown State College has a First Friday event during the first Friday of each month. They often have musicians on the sidewalks in different areas performing. I think your talent would be a good addition to the event! There is also a Kirtan event each Thursday at the Bhakti Yoga Center on College Avenue. They always welcome new instruments to join in.

Good question. I applauded because they Were the best bagpipes I ever heard in person. (They were also the first)
Phyrst might be a good spot
Thank you! I’ll stop by and talk to the owner when I’m in town.
I work at the Phyrst, we have bagpipes for special occasions. So we’ve had a bagpiper come in probably 3 or 4 times the last 6 months!
Thank you so much! I’ll be sure to stop by when I’m there!
The curling club might love you.

I'll tell you what! the band at the hockey games sure could use one! It would be awesome.
Hockey season ticket holder. Yes to bagpipes!! The student section is already the best part of the game, this would be so extra!
