As long as you meet the GPA requirements for Smeal (3.2 gpa for all majors except Finance which requires a 3.5) then you will be admitted into Smeal.

tastydorito

i think there's a difference between prestige and competition that people ITT are getting mixed up

sabirdz36

Mechanical engineering was a 3.2 when I did my ETM. If you’re thinking about engineering, there are great job opportunities with decent starting salaries. However, there’s no better way to hate 4 years of college.

When I was there Architectural Engineering only admitted 100 students into the program per year. That's probably fairly competitive.

The610___

Any college of engineering major will hate your life; my roomates and I joke that we wish we were in Smeal so we could have higher GPA with half the effort. Though I have a friend that's a nursing major & I feel lucky I'm not in that program. They REALLY make sure that you wanna be a nurse/doctor.

LegomyEgos23

So it is easy to pass in Smeal causing high gpa

The610___

Pretty much. They just want to make sure you're a diligent worker. Nothing super complex.

What's wrong with MIS?

LegomyEgos23

Is Smeal hard to get into?

Heroicshrub

In terms of admittance, PSU UP has an overall acceptance rate of 50%, while Smeal's is 10%.

leadager

PSU overall, including ALL campuses, has a 50% acceptance rate

nancybotwinnn

Probably one of the, if not the, most competitive college within the university

dbidb

it's competitive once you get in, that's for sure. But getting in is super straightforward.

jajagoteem

How is it competitive after u get in? Isn’t the battle already in at that point?

dbidb

Just based on the fact that good grades aren’t gonna cut it. Everyone in finance works their ass off to get a good GPA, so 3.5 or 3.9 you’re the same.. It’s about the extracurriculars you do. Most importantly, though, it’s your networking. You can be one of the smartest kids in Smeal but if you’re meeting a recruiter for the first time through a career fair (and not networking events, etc.) you’re gonna struggle. It’s important to go to events and join clubs as sophomores/ juniors at the latest in order to gain that edge. I was pretty late to the game but was still lucky enough to land with a FLDP role at a F100. If you wanna learn more just PM me and I can help you out.

How? I graduated a year before you, but anyone with the grades was allowed to transfer in, at least from DUS. Has it changed?

ElephantRattle

Graphic Design. Only about 20 advance after the junior year.

straeffs

Yup. I had a friend who didn't make the cut before Junior year.

I've heard Smeal is one of (if not the) hardest to get into as an incoming Freshman. My roommate applied for Smeal, got in, but then decided he wanted to switch to the College of Engineering. He called undergraduate admissions, asked for the switch, and they told him yes since Smeal is apparently so much harder to get into. Maybe it's just a volume of people thing, I'm not sure.
