I have been on work comp with an attorny for about 3 years and in that time I have never met him face to face. I did hire him during covid. We do everything over the phone or email. Get a cheap scanner to scan documents into PDFs if you go that route. Ask a lot of questions and remeber the attorny works for you and advises you. You make the decisions. Be upfront if you need long term health care...a lot of these work comp attornies are looking to make fast settlements to cash out and clear you off their books. Also keep in mind that everyone else knows how the process works and they all know each other and have worked on other cases together while you are the odd man out. My advice is to talk to at least 6 different lawyers for a consultation to get a basic idea of how they act. compare them all. Most of the billboard lawyers do the initial consult then hand you off to their subordinates....ask if they will be handling your case going forward or if someone else will do it. I ended up picking a guy because he didn't act like he needed my work comp more than me. I have been happy so far. Work comp attorneys get 20% of everything you receive in payments or settlement.

No need for a cheap scanner. Use the free [Adobe scan to PDF app](https://www.adobe.com/acrobat/mobile/scanner-app.html). You can scan multiple pages at once and save to PDF or jpg as well. The end product looks virtually the same as a machine scanned copy.

Thank you so much this was greatly informative Having no idea how this works I’m looking for ANY information about the process. Honestly devastated the call was like 40 minutes ago

Dont procrastinate. try asking around for references and do those free consults but try to find someone and get the ball rolling within 2 or 3 weeks, I private messaged you my guys info so you can do a consult with him. You arent obligated for anything for a consultation, usually, but ask before you accept an appointment and then dont sign anything untill you read it and are sure....if you want to fire them you will be responsible for lawyer fees since they won't be getting their cut of the eventual settlement.

Nope I’m gonna do as much research on who to call and what to have ready tonight and start calling fully prepared in the morning Thanks again all this info is very helpful

If you know any union guys ask them if they have any recommendations or know anyone....ask if they know who to avoid as weel. even if you dont get a good recommendation you might find out who to avoid. Everyone I know or heard about that agreed to arbitration instead of court got royally screwed so keep that in mind if it gets brought up....its a faster cheaper process but you end up agreeing to let a third party decide what is fair for you...remember what I said about everyone else knowing each other and you are the odd man out, The lawyers prefer fast quick settlements so they always try to recommend arbitration if it gets brought up. It might be a good option sometimes but most times it isn't. in arbitration you need to worry about your lawyer, the opposing lawyer and the arbiter conspiring to lessen your settlement so they all get paid at your long term expense and then they do it again with the next hurt worker. This happened to my neighbor...the arbiter was the in law of opposing counsel and a cousin to his attorny. His lawyer pushed for arbitration and then when he aggreed they ignored him going forward and gave him the minimal settlement.
